Notas do Editor

  1. Activate the waterfront Possible ideas for Seattle Waterfront:Use the long table idea to populate the project area with tables. Could be appropriated by public for everyday uses – picnics, conversation, meetings. Could also be used by the team to stage engagement activities in small or large groups.
  2. Seattle has a rich, vibrant
  3. diverse, accomplished
  4. Active cultural community – that’s the bounty and the connection to place and the soul of the city.
  5. Seattle is a national model for the integration of public art into the public realm. That’s the resources.
  6. Now let’s look at responsibility & stewardshipHow to describe the artists on our team – generous and visionary individuals that defy easy categorization? Since his pioneering applications of limestone tablets in the 1980s –“River Rolaids “– to sweeten acidified rivers, Buster has engaged his audience in a sustained exploration of the social meaning of water, along with a bone-deep concern for ecology. This acidification process is affecting Puget Sound.
  7. Anecdote about Rick Lowe and the studio visitPRH is founded on the principle that art-and the community it creates-can be the foundation for revitalizing depressed inner-city neighborhoods. This principle was is in part based on the philosophy of German artist Joseph Beuys (1921 - 1986) who coined the phrase “social sculpture,” which transformed the idea of sculpture as an art form into a social activity. Thus, the mission of Project Row Houses is to create community through the celebration of art, African American history and culture.PRH has established programs that encompass arts and culture, neighborhood revitalization, low-income housing, education, historic preservation, and community service. These programs are inspired by the work of world renowned artist Dr. John Biggers (1924 - 2001) and his principles concerning the creation of effective communities, specifically: Art and creativity should be viewed as an integral part of life, exemplified in African traditions wherein art is interwoven into the very fabric of life through rituals and ceremony activities. Quality education is defined through impartation of knowledge and wisdom - including understanding that is passed from generation to generation. Strong neighborhoods have social safety nets, woven by community to support community and to raise social responsibility Good and relevant architecture; meaning housing that should not only be well designed, but also make sense to preserve a community’s historic character.
  8. Nation-wide creative, civic engagement campaignWe brought game-changing innovative thinkers to this game-changing, unprecedented opportunity. These are artists
  9. Participation through creative action emphasizes a shared human experience and common values. This is the information that designers really need to create great spaces that meet the highest aspirations and provide for the common good. Real sustainability.
  10. This quote by Lucia Neare summarizing our approach to creative engagement. What if citizens were invited to dream together?Art has the power to engage the senses, transform reality and stimulate imaginative thought. The act of imagining or questioning “if only…” makes room for alternative realities and stimulates higher recognition of associations and connections. (This will be helpful in a complex project like the Waterfront with competing interests and the need to design and deliver solutions that emphasize overlapping and multi-purposed solutions.)It’s a different plane of thinking that focuses on how a place makes you feel (or how you want a place to make you feel), not on the details of design.
