Introduction
• Present day Panchakarma is observed as –
– 1] Traditional and
– 2] Research Explorative
• Panchakarma is intended to make lifestyle or Disease
rectification in Ayurveda
• Delicate and sensitive 21st Century Human is not able
to withstand the Traditional way of Dosha elimination
• Industrialization and work style made the individual
busy and “NO TIME” people
• To protect and Treat these “NO TIME” people we need

4. Virechana
• The word Virechana commonly means
eliminating the dosha from lower body
• Charaka used the Word Virechana even for Upper
body elimination
• Virechana is used for Pitta and Vata elimination
• Niruha Vasti is not equal Virechana, as it removes
the Dosha from Pakwashaya only
• Virechana word is used in many areas as Shiro
virechana, Mutra Virechana, etc. according to the
site & material removed from body

• Charaka wrote 245 Virechana Yoga with 8
drugs in 6 chapters– Trivrut – Aragwadha –
Tilwaka – Sudha – Saptala – Shankhini – Danti
– Dravanti
• Susruta classified in to 6 groups based on
utility part – Mula – Twak – Phala – Taila –
Swarasa – Ksheera

7. Virechana Qualities
• Charaka states that Ushna, teekshna,
Sukshma, Vyavayi, Vikasi qualities are there
along with Apa + Prudhvi Mahabhoota –
there by Adhobhaga Prabhava exists
• Susruta explained Ushna, Teekshna, Sukshma,
Vikasi and Saratva – mean as Anulomana or
spreading nature

9. Time of Administration
• Time of Virechana administration is decided in
Four ways –
– Seasonal in a year
• Pravrut (Shravana‐Vata), Sharat (Kartika – Pitta) and
Vasanta (Chaitra – Kapha)
– Out of 24 hours in relation with meals
• This includes the Dosha association as – if Apana before
food and Udana after food
– Based on the state of disease
• Anulomana – Sransana – Bhedana – Rechana
– Based on the Strength of Patinet
• Mrudu – Madhyama – Teekshna Aushadhi

12. Agni intervention
• Mandagni or Alpagni patients are
contraindicated for Virechana as they couldn't
digest dravya
– If necessary one have to kindle the fire for 3 days
with Kshara, Lavana and Ghruta respectively
before to administer Virechana
• Deeptagni or Atyagni patients digests the
dravya and no Virechana karma possible
– First undertake Vasti and than the Virechana

13. Virechana Preparation
• In general Virechana is planned after 15 days of
Vamana (Su.Chi.33/19)
– If not the Kapha moves over Pitta and makes Gurutwa or
Pravahika
• Purvakarma for Virechana is made as we do for
Vamana –
– Agni deepti, Snehapana, Bahya sneha and Sweda for
moving the Dosha to Koshta (C.Su.15/16; C.Si.1/10)
• Snehapana is planned on Koshta basis;
– Mrudu‐3, Madhyama‐5, Krura‐7 days
• We have to opt Samshamana sneha after every
procedure, even for Virechana (C.Si.6/7)

14. Precautions
• No Virechana for Atisnigdha
– If given it is a Ruksha Virechana
• No Virechana for Sneha satmya
– Make them Ruksha and unction them with
Snehapana before Virechana
• No Virechana for Mandagni/ Krura Koshta
– make Agni Vruddhi with Yavakshara + Saindhava +
Gruta then follow the Virechana Procedure

15. Pre Virechana Procedure
• After Snehapana 3 days gap for Virechana karma.
In these 3 days ‐
– Abhyanga (Dosha corresponding oil) + Snigdha Sweda
– Rasoudana Ahara – Twice daily
• It is added with Jangala mamsa rasa or Dwidala Dhanya
(pulses) Yusha which is Snigdha, Drava, Ushna in nature
– The food should never increase either Kapha (if
Kapha is more causes Urdhwa Gati) or Pitta (if Pitta is
more the medicine is digested)
– The day before Night of Virechana one has to
consume Laghu Ahara with Amla varga Phala juice
and Ushnodaka – This makes Pakwashaya shithilata

16. Virechana Karma
• Aushadhi based on Koshta
– Krura – garishta Matra – 1 Karsha = 12 gms
– Madhyama – Madhya matra – 3 Sana = 9 gms
– Mrudu – Kanishta Matra – 1 ½ Sana – 4.5 gms
• Virechana Aushadhi is consumed with
lukewarm water
• After taking Virechana Dravya to prevent
Urdhwagati – wash the face with cold water
• Consumption of cold water is contraindicated

• Input in terms of fluids consumed
• Output in the quantity of liquid fecal mater
19. Virechana assessment
• Vyapats are to be observed – if a proper
assessment is made and proper Medicine with
proper quantity, there will be no
complications at all.

• Generally we found –
– Chardi (emesis),
– Udarashoola (Abdominal Pain),
– Adhmana (Abdominal bloating),
– Netra Praveshana (Sunken eyes),
– Kandu (itching), and
– Klama (Fatigue) as Vyapats

21. Admana
• Admana complication appears because of small dose
• It can be more with –
– Ruksha Sharira
– Alpagni
– Prabala Dosha
• Symptoms are – Headache, Pain in flanks, Back pain
• Treatments are – Agnivruddhi, Adhmana Chikitsa,
Niruha vasti, Anuvasana Vasti, Deepana vasti, Phala
varti
• Snigdha Virechana is indicated by Susruta

22. Klama (Fatigue)
• Mrudu Koshta or Snigdha Deha people gets
this complication
• Symptoms are –
– Klama (fatigue)
– Tandra (stupor)
– Shareera Gourava (heaviness)
– Dourbalya (weakness)
• Treatment is – Vamana, Sneha Sweda, Snigdha

• Antiki – the sequence of elimination is Purisha –
Pitta – Kapha
• Vegiki – Pravara‐30 –Madhyama‐20 –Avara
Shuddhi ‐10 vega
• Maniki – by measurement of output ‐ Pravara‐ 4
Prasta –Madhyama‐ 3 Prasta – Avara Shuddhi ‐ 4
Prasta (this quantity is other than the input
liquids)
• Lingiki – based on the symptoms Heena Yoga or
Ati Yoga is decided.
