There are so many benefits to team building with your staff, one of
which is increased self esteem in your employees. This could be one of
the very best benefits of all. Without self esteem and a positive outlook
on life, employees can be hard to work with and become depressed.
Depression can lead to large amounts of time off work and increased
sicknesses. In order to prevent your staff from feeling low or depressed,
team building activities to build self esteem are available. These are
activities made to bond and bring your team closer together. As studies
have shown that when someone feels as if they are part of a group they
have better self esteem.
The following activities will help build a workplace that every person
involved will enjoy doing, and benefit from.
Learning from Experience: Have participants introduce themselves and
explain one thing they have learned the hard way about the subject you
are covering. Post their learning’s on a flip chart and refer to them as
appropriate throughout the year.
Good or New: Ask each person to share something good or new they
have experienced in the last 24 hours.
My Slogan: Explain that many companies have slogans or “mottos”
which reflect their values. For example, Ford Motor Company uses the
slogan, ‘Quality is Job One.’ Ask each team member to write (or
borrow) a slogan to describe him/herself and share w/the group.
The Best Team: Have each person share a description of the best team
they have ever been on and why it was the best. Post characteristics on

a flip chart. Debrief this exercise by having the team identify ways to
maximize the “best team” characteristics. This icebreaker would be
particularly appropriate in a group where teamwork is expected.
The M & M Breaker: When team enters the room, they take an M & M.
When they introduce themselves, what they share is dependent on the
color of their M & M. For example, a red one might mean they share
what they hope to get out of the course. On the lighter side, a red one
might mean they share a recent accomplishment or success.
Although these team building activities are not made only for self
esteem building, it is safe to say each one will do just that. These
activities are meant to include the whole group, and allow every person
the chance to speak. These activities are also great for the person who
never speaks up, or is shy. Allowing people to share and feel
appreciated by others is the number one way to make sure that self
esteem is brought back. When you have a work place that feels good
about themselves, you will find the work they do to be of a much better
quality.
