The difference between team building with children and team building
with adults is the budget. Adults usually team build in a company,
which has over head and a budget for such things, children often learn
to team build in schools or group activities. This means the leader
needs to get creative when planning for team building events. Team
building can be free and fun for everyone, when the right planning and
attention has gone into the event.
In order to provide free team building activities for kids, you will have
to have to do a little research. Outdoor activities are always free, and
kids love it. The outdoors can host a large amount of team building
activities and it does not have to cost a cent. Below are some of the
best ways to plan a free team building event for children.
3 team building activities
Getting close: Participants stand in a circle shoulder to shoulder, the
facilitator starts with the round balloon under his neck OR the oblong
balloon between his knees OR the hula hoop around his waist (or all
three!). Without breaking the chain or un-holding hands, the round
balloon gets passed from chin to chin OR the oblong balloon from
knees to knees OR the hula hoop from waist to waist (or all three!).
Mine field: minefield without stepping on and/or touching any “mines”.
Begin by placing tennis balls (or paper plates) all over the ground. These
tennis balls will represent mines. Next, instruct your group to get into
pairs (if group is uneven number, participants can be switched to
ensure everyone has a chance to participate). One member of each pair

will be blindfolded during the activity. In addition to being blindfolded,
they will be unable to speak. The other member of each pair will be
giving directions to their partner. The only directions that can be given
are left, right, forward, and back. If a mine is touched, the pair must
start over. Several pairs will be going through the minefield at the same
time so it is vital that blindfolded members listen carefully to their
partner.
Relay: Relay races are free and fun to play. Break the students into
groups of 2 or 3, each group will compete to win. This builds strong
partnership bonds and helps the children communicate. If you see
certain children who have issues with one another, or trust issues.
Perhaps you should pair them together. This will allow them to see
each other in a new light, and perhaps create a friendship.
Team building was never meant to be a costly thing to do. It is all about
a team of people working together to improve on skills and habits.
When children join in on free team building activities for kids, it can
help them learn not only about others, but themselves as well. Being
able to work with others at a young age can help children prepare for
adult hood. Free team building games should be fun, informative and
should always bring the kids together as one group.
