5. Our music video generally challenges
the codes and conventions of real
media texts. The song we chose to do
was a cover of Madonna’s pop song
‘Like A Virgin’ by ‘The Voice’
contestant Vince Kidd. As a pair we
noticed that Vince Kidd’s cover of
Madonna’s song, was from the RnB
genre. Music videos from this genre
are usually performance or concept
based. Vince Kidd’s music video for
this song is performance based.

the particular genre and the original

6. SIMILARITIES/DIFFERENCESBETWEEN MADONNA’S‘LIKEA VIRGIN’
AND VINCE KIDD’S
In Madonna’s music video, the male is in control of the sexual
situation and the Madonna is sure in her decision for this where as
my music video has the female in control of the situation and the
male not very sure about what he wants to do.
HOWEVER
Both videos similarly use a bed in the music videos and have a
similar camera angle and positioning.
7. LAURA MULVEY – MALEGAZETHEORY
This theory suggests that the
camera/audience always represents a
heterosexual man’s perspective of
scene objectifying women.
Our music video challenges this
Theory as the focus of the music video
is on the male, the theory has been
flipped. The focus on the male
Protagonists vulnerability as a virgin
subverts the theory.
HOWEVER
Features. In this theory women are
often portrayed as objects and this
conforms to the conventions of the
RnB genre. Our music video sexualises
the female protagonists.
Our music video does carry some
representations of the theory.
8. Poster
In terms of creating a poster, it was
very difficult to research a poster for
Vince Kidd’s cover of ‘Like A Virgin’,
as he didn’t release it as a single,
therefore there was no poster.
Instead we looked at the poster for
his latest released single ‘Sick Love’.
Our media product challenged the
conventions of the poster we were
focusing on. Our poster has nothing
to do with the artist. Instead it takes
the animations from the narrative to
symbolise the subject matter of
virginity and innocence in contrast to
other posters in the RnB genre that
put a heavy focus on the artist or
band.

9. ALBUM COVER
Above is Madonna’s album cover for ‘Like A Virgin’, where she is the main focus and
her name is evidently bigger than the name of the song . In our first design of our
album cover we decided to make our artists name bigger than the song title similar
to the way Madonna did. In terms of that, we used conventions from a real media
product in our draft. However the draft had no other relation to the artist as it
consisted of silhouettes to represent the facelessness of our subject matter. Our
final version of our album cover further challenges Madonna’s album cover because
the artists name ‘Vince Kidd’ is smaller that the title of the song, connoting that the
message of the song hold more of a significance that the artist. The purpose of
Madonna’s cover is to sell the artist rather than the song.
10. LIPSYNCING
An important convention of a music video is lip syncing, most music
videos have lip syncing. My music video only contains a few seconds of
lip syncing, challenging the conventions of real media texts, as music
videos usually have lip syncing through out.

11. MISEN SCENE
The mis en scene could be considered one of the most important characteristics of a
music video. In the case of my music video, my mis en scene comes from the narrative
that I have created, therefore my mis en scene does not develop from a real media text.
My music video was set in a park and a home, as this is what my target audience thought
was appropriate for the music video content. The props that I used were also seen as
appropriate for the video content.
12. CAMERA
ANGLES/SHOTSCamera angles and shots can be seen as a crucial convention of a music video,
showing characters emotions and feelings or even social standing in society. I
Have used a variety of shots in my music video such as long shots, mid shots
And close ups.
Close-ups

video.
13. INTERTEXTUALITY
Intertextuality refers to the relationship that exists between different texts, with in
media this refers to different types of media. I chose to use intertextuality within my
music video. In the beginning of my music video Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin’ is playing and
then paused through an iPhone before Vince Kidd’s version begins. I also used the same
type of text from Kanye West’s ‘All of the Lights’ music video at the end over the
animation. The definition at the beginning of the music video is taken from Beyonce’s
music video ‘Diva’.
