• The nutrients in food enable the cells in our bodies to perform
their necessary functions. Nutrients are the nourishing
substances in food that are essential for growth& development
of body. Nutrients give our bodies instructions about how to
function.
MEDICINAL VALUE OF FOOD
•Cereals –
a. Rice – recommended for diarrhea. Rice gruel is best for
infants sufferingfromdiarrhea, as it is ideal fluidfor oral
dehydration. Because of its very low protein & alkalizing
effects it is very useful for gout or arthritis.
b. Barley- it is beneficial in cases of gastritis, dyspepsia, peptic
ulcers & colitis. Barley fiber prevents constipation & its
complication . E.g. colon cancer
c. Corn- it is goods source of soluble & insoluble fiber. it is
recommended for intestinal disorders. e.g. irritablebowel,
chronic renal diseases. it also reduces the cholesterol because
of bran which is present in sweet corn.
d. Wheat – the king of grains, Wheat starch is very easily
digested. Whole wheat contains bran so it has laxative effects
& prevents constipation. Wheat’s composition is the most
complete & balanced diet.
e. Oats – oats provide glucose, fatty acid, phosphorus & vitamin
B1 which are very important for neuron functions. So it is
recommended for nervous systemcomplaints e.g. fatigue,
insomnia, depression & mental exhaustion.
f. Rye – it provides flexibility to the arteries & improves
circulation so it prevents coronary heart diseases &
arteriosclerosis.
It has rich cellulose fibercontent which prevents constipation.
It is highly recommendedfor hypertension & patients with
colon cancer.
•Pulses –
a. Lentils – lentils are excellent sourceof iron, so they are usedfor
prevention of anemia.
 To prevents constipation.
 Its legumes are highlyrecommendedduring pregnancy because of its
iron, protein, fiber & folic acid contents.
b. Soyabean –
it helps women to maintain hormonal balance & is very useful
in regulation menstrual cycle, relief fromthe symptoms of
menopause.
It lowers the risk of breast cancer.
In man it lowers risk of prostate cancer& heart attack.
It is recommended for infants diet as it contains good quality
protein.
c.Beans – beans are recommended in case of itching skin, dry
skin, allergies & general dermatosis. It is also recommended for
hair loss, dandruff & seborrhoea.

Nuts & seeds
a. Walnuts – these are calledheart friendly, so recommendedfor
heart diseases & best tolerated for diabetic patients.
b. Sunflower seeds- the essential fatty acids in this seed impede
the progress of arteriosclerosis by lowering the level of
cholesterol in the blood.
• Sunflower seeds are rich in vitamin E which is a powerful
antioxidants to prevents blood clots & heart attacks.
• Sunflower seeds reducethe cholesterol level.
c.Pistachio – the most ironrich nut & is useful for anemic
patients.
d. Coconuts – this is mineral rich fruit which can be eaten raw, or
in the formof coconut water, coconut oil or coconut sauce.

phosphorus. Magnesiumis found in bones & muscles. Its
deficiency leads to cramps & nervous excitability . So its

& can prevent cataract formation.

constipation.
c. Spinach – Spinach is richin iron. 100g spinachprovides about
3 mg of iron. So it prevents anemia & can be suggestedfor
treatment of anemia.
It contain carotenoids so preventsvision loss.
Its regular use aids in reducing blood cholesterol.
100 gm spinach contain 195 mg of folic acid.It prevents fetal
malformation when given to pregnant women.
d. Radish – it promotes bile production, so it is good for liver &
gall bladderdisorders.
e. Cabbage- Cabbage juice heals ulcerative colitis & intestinal
parasites. Cabbage heals gastric ulcer. It acts as laxative due to
richfiber in it.
It is recommended for osteoporosis & decalcification due to its

they reduce insulin need. Obese may eat mushrooms because

1. Banana – Banana is one of the most nutrition's & medicinal
fruit. It is quiterich in minerals, i.e. potassium, magnesium&
iron.
 Banana is very effective in diarrhea & celiac diseases.
 Banana are recommendedas ideal fruit for cirrhosis liver,
ascites & edema.
2. Mango –
It helps to maintain healthy skin as it contributes to proper
skin hydration & tone. Eating abundant amount of mangoes is
recommended in case of eczema, skin dryness & aging.
It is necessary for good vision. Mango consumption is
recommended for night blindness or optic nerve atrophy.

nasal congestion.

painful & excessive menstruation & leucorrhoea.
4. Caraway seed( Siya Jeera) – It relieves flatulence. Caraway acts
as antihelminthic, specially against hookworm. Caraway oil

5. Cardamom( chhoti Elaichi) – Cardamomrelieves gas & heart
burn& is used to prevent indigestion. It removes foul smell
fromthe mouth & relieves hiccups when usedwith mint leaves.
6. Celery (Ajwain Ka Patta)- celery is very effective for indigestion

  • 2. • The nutrients in food enable the cells in our bodies to perform their necessary functions. Nutrients are the nourishing substances in food that are essential for growth& development of body. Nutrients give our bodies instructions about how to function.
  • 3. MEDICINAL VALUE OF FOOD •Cereals – a. Rice – recommended for diarrhea. Rice gruel is best for infants sufferingfromdiarrhea, as it is ideal fluidfor oral dehydration. Because of its very low protein & alkalizing effects it is very useful for gout or arthritis.
  • 4. b. Barley- it is beneficial in cases of gastritis, dyspepsia, peptic ulcers & colitis. Barley fiber prevents constipation & its complication . E.g. colon cancer
  • 5. c. Corn- it is goods source of soluble & insoluble fiber. it is recommended for intestinal disorders. e.g. irritablebowel, chronic renal diseases. it also reduces the cholesterol because of bran which is present in sweet corn.
