A water repellent coating is designed to stop water from penetrating up and down through the concrete. Water repellent coatings perform differently depending on what their chemical make-up is.

3. Silane/Siloxanes
Silane/Siloxanes, such as the Armor SX5000, is a
penetrating water repellent that fills in the pores of the
concrete, below the surface. While it works great for
poured concrete, it is designed for very porous surfaces
such as cinderblock and brick. It will fill in the pores of the
concrete completely, stopping water from passing
through. As a breathable sealer however, it will allow
vapors to pass instead of being trapped below the
surface. Because silane/siloxane sealers are penetrating
sealers, they do not leave behind a film or coating on the
surface and will leave the surface exposed to absorb a
slight amount of water.
4. The Armor SX5000 is a low-VOC, solvent based
silane/siloxane based water repellent for
concrete, cinderblock (CMU), brick, and unglazed tile. The
Armor SX5000 penetrates and reacts with minerals within
the substrate to create a hydrophobic barrier against
water absorption.
Solvent based silane-siloxane sealers have been proven to
bond better, last longer, and perform better than water
based silane/siloxane sealers!
5. Silicate Sealers
Silicate sealers, like the Armor S2000 and Armor
L3000 concrete sealers, are penetrating sealers that
waterproof through densification. They form a
crystalline barrier within the pores and the size of
the barrier formed is dependent on the applicator
and the number of coats. Because silane/siloxane
sealers are penetrating sealers, they do not leave
behind a film or coating on the surface and will
leave the surface exposed to absorb a slight about
of water.
6. Armor S1000, S2000 and L3000 – Water based water proofers and
densifiers. Armor concrete sealers are proprietary chemical solutions
that react with the Calcium Hydroxide in the concrete to produce
Calcium Silicate Hydrate (CSH); the same material that is produced in
the reaction between Portland cement and water, giving the concrete
much of its strength.
Our chemistry is inorganic with no VOC’s. There is nothing to wear
out, scratch or peel. Once sealed, the concrete will have an increased
strength of up to 45% and will be resistant to abrasion, water, and
chemicals.
7. Coatings
Coatings, like epoxies and acrylics (Armor
AR500) are designed to protect and enhance the
surface of concrete. Where silane/siloxanes and
silicates work beneath the surface to prevent
water intrusion, coatings work above the surface
to prevent water absorption.
8. Armor AR500 – The Armor AR500 Clear Gloss
Coat sealer is a high solids, low VOC, solvent
based 100% acrylic lacquer designed to protect
your decorative concrete and provide it with a
high gloss shine. The Armor AR500 Clear Gloss
Coat is fast drying, non-yellowing, and provides
excellent resistance to rain, sun, freezing
temperatures, stains, and other pollutants.
9. Best Water Repellent Sealer
To get the best protection, you want to use both
a penetrating sealer and a coating. The
penetrating sealer will protect your concrete
while the coating will protect the surface.
Further, penetrating sealers don’t change the
concrete aesthetically while coatings can
provide the concrete with a color or shine.
