Chemical Pathways 9.1
Calorie Term used by scientists to measure the energy stored in foods.
Glycolysis First step in releasing the energy of glucose, in which a molecule of glucose is broken into two molecules of pyruvic acid.
Cellular Respiration Process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen.
NAD+ Electron carrier involved in glycolysis.
Fermentation Process by which cells release energy in the absence of oxygen.
Anaerobic Process that does not require oxygen.
Key Concept What is cellular respiration? Cellular respiration is the process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen.
Key Concept What happens during the process of glycolysis? Glycolysis is the process in which one molecule of glucose is broken in half, producing two molecules of pyruvic acid, a 3-carbon compound.
Key Concept What are the two main types of fermentation? The two main types of fermentation are alcoholic fermentation and lactic acid fermentation.
