1. Evaluation Question 1:
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
2. The title of the product
• At first we found it hard to think of a name for
our production, we thought of many different
names but none of them really stood out and
suited our production. As soon as we thought
of the name, “The Darkness” we thought it
really went with the narrative of our
production. This also goes with the
conventions of a horror film which we thought
would further attract an audience.
3. Title font and style
• As you can see we have decided to make our
title red with a black background. We thought
this would again attract the audience and it
fits with the conventions of a horror film.
4. Setting and location
• Our final production was set in a house, this
allows the audience to relate to the main
character and again relates to conventions of a
real horror film like ‘Scream’. We also thought
that it would build more suspense for our
character to be home alone making the
audience think about their own fears that
could take place in their own home.
5. Camerawork and editing
• As camera person, I had to work closely with
both the director and editor. I feel as if we got
enough shots for the editor to use and to
make our production interesting for the
audience. They range from an establishing
shot at the beginning to show the location of
the production to close ups to show the
emotions on the protagonist face. We also
thought that the use of a POV shot would
leave the audience guessing who is she looking
at? What’s going to happen to her now?
6. Props and costumes
• As we wanted to make a clear difference between
the antagonist and protagonist we thought that
the simplest way we could show this was through
the costumes. We dressed our protagonist in a
simple white top and black leggings, the white top
was to represent her purity and also as she was
going to bed we didn’t think that she needed to
wear anything fancy to represent this. We
decided dressed our antagonist in all black, this
was to represent their evil. As our production
name is “The Darkness” where the antagonist
only appears in the dark we thought that an
essential prop would be the bedside lamp. This
becomes a safety for our protagonist.
7. How are the characters introduced?
• Our protagonist is introduced straight after
the location is set. You first see her face in the
mirror where you don’t really think much of it
as she he just getting ready to go to bed.
However our antagonist is introduced when a
supernatural spirit walks across the screen,
this instantly makes the audience think about
what might happen.
