18. Earth Voyage offers programs that incorporate AAAS Benchmarks for Science Literacy and uses multiple intelligence learning strategies and a whole system thinking approach.
19. Earth Voyage offers unique educational experiences that integrate Science, Geography, Math, and History in a fun, hands-on way. Our water program, Water Is Life , engages participants in a series of cooperative activities that explore humanity’s relationship to water by physically graphing the human population with color-coded foam blocks that show access to clean water as well as regional trends in daily use.
20. The WOW challenge builds on the Water Is Life program and is designed to remove the orange from the world. This is the game. Once the map is full blue , the game will be declared won.
24. Participating schools who plan to attend WOW are encouraged to raise funds for clean water projects. To assist their fundraising efforts, students from participating schools receive a page on the Blue Planet Run website. This page helps the students seek sponsorship for their efforts while simultaneously highlighting their school.

WOW, the World Olympiad of Water. It’s a daylong ‘feedback festival’ that helps solve the world’s water crisis through play. WOW, its time is now. (picture of the WOW homepage / images of healthy kids drinking water around the world.) WOW is a partnership between Blue Planet Run and Earth Voyage. (picture of BPR and EV logos) Blue Planet Run is a California–based non-profit that sponsors races to raise funds for clean water projects globally. (pictures of runners from BPR site) Earth Voyage, a North Carolina-based non-profit, is an associate of the Buckminster Fuller Institute based in New York City. (picture of BFI logo) Buckminster Fuller was the designer of the geodesic dome and the ‘dymaxion’ projection world map. (picture of Bucky, the dome and the map) He also developed a ‘world game’ based upon equitable distribution of resources and even taught at Black Mountain College. (picture of Bucky and the game, picture of Bucky at Black Mt.) Earth Voyage owes much to Fuller, particularly his dymaxion map and his idea of a world game. Earth Voyage employs a gym-sized version of the map as the basis of its Water Is Life program. (picture of the EV map) In Water Is Life , students graph world population distribution with one hundred orange cones. To represent populations with access to clean water, students replace orange cones for blue. The cones that remain orange, about one fifth, represent populations who do not have access to clean=2 0water. (picture of students with cones on the map) Students discover that this translates to over one billion people. (picture students on the map, picture of child with dirty water) WOW is designed to remove the orange from the world. This is the game. Once the map is full blue, the game will be declared won. (picture of cones on map, picture of vast crowd cheering) To splash into WOW, middle schools may sign up now for a half day field trip to Blue Ridge Assembly in March or April for Water Is Life . (picture of participants doing Water Is Life) In Water Is Life , students not only participate in a two and half hour educational experience that conforms to a number of state and national sixth through eighth grade learning standards, but also receive an invitation for themselves and their families back to Blue Ridge Assembly on May 16 th for WOW, an event limited to the first eight hundred participants. (picture of AAAS Benchmarks for Science Literacy – see www.sciencenetlinks.org and picture of Blue Ridge Assembly) Students who plan to attend WOW are encouraged to raise funds for clean water projects. To assist their fundraising efforts, students from participating schools receive a page on the Blue Planet Run website. This page helps the students seek sponsorship for their efforts while simultaneously highlighting their school. (picture of the Omega kids on BPR – www.blueplanetrun.org/omega ) Like any Olympiad, the World Olympiad of Water features multip le eve nts. At each event, participants may earn ‘prize water’ which, at the end of the day, translates into valuable, water-related prizes for the students’ schools! 49% of the funds raised for WOW will flow back into local water conservation efforts. (picture of French Broad River or something obviously local) However, the lion’s share of the funds raised for WOW, 51%, will go to global distribution efforts through Blue Planet Run’s existing network of NGOs in areas of need. (picture of BPR’s diagram of distribution to NGOs – available for free from downloadable pdf) ‘ Plug Locally. Plumb Globally.’ WOW celebrates the one world watershed through play. (picture) As WOWs spread around the world, the orange on the map will turn to blue. This is the game. It can be won. WOW, the time is now. (picture of happy kid with water)
