2. What is Cervical discectomy
Cervical discectomy is a surgery to remove one or more herniated discs from the neck.
Ectomy means to take out. In most of the cases discectomy procedure is combined
with fusion of the 2 vertebrae separated by the disc.
The disc between 2 vertebrae acts as a shock absorber which minimizes the impact of
movement on the spinal column. Each disc in the shape of a donut, has a jelly like
substance that holds water and remains well hydrated throughout known as nucleus
pulposus. Sometimes the disc becomes rigid, loses its elasticity and becomes more
vulnerable to injury. As a result it prolapses, where the inner core leaks out pressing
against the ligaments that firmly attaches bones to bones surrounding each disc, the
spinal nerves and also the spinal cord.This results in localized pain and the
surrounding structures gets compressed.
