Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can
explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before
taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and
unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I
struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to
the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class
that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the
whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for
navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I
have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in
English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

Essay on Listening for Understanding
Listening for Understanding
Listening is an important form of communication. Unfortunately, many people who do not know
how to listen believe they can listen well. They often say "I have been doing this all of my life of
course I can listen". Listening is not inherited, or a personality trait, it is a skill that must be worked
on and practiced.
Anybody can become a good listener if they are committed to learn how and are willing to work
hard. The first mistake that people tend to make when listening is to not make any type of
comments while listening. They tend to just stand there and listen while the speaker talks. This can
become very frustrating for the speaker and the listener. While the speaker may feel like he isn't being
...show more content...
Try to listen to what the speaker is trying to say and not to what is making you angry. Summarize
the main points of what the speaker was saying so that the focus is on the speaker and not you. It
is always important to try and listen objectively no matter what the speaker is trying to say. By
doing this, you will become a better listener and more able to communicate with others concerning
subjects that might normally make you angry to the point that you would no longer be able to carry
on a working conversation with that individual. This will make you especially valuable in the
management industry where, as a rule, people will come to you with problems that need to be
resolved.
It is important to listen carefully and to withhold personal judgement. This is especially true when the
subject matter or the position taken by the speaker is making you angry. In this circumstance, your
interjections, if not thoroughly thought through, may just make the person defensive. Problems can
also arise if you are too nice and give a lot of positive comments. People like it when they are being
praised. This can alter what the speaker is saying. If you continue to give positive comments the
speaker will continue to want more of them from you. If you want to find out what the speaker is
really thinking you need to listen and withhold evaluation.
As well as withholding evaluation one must also show patience. While many

CTE Essay
CTE affects many different athletes all over the world. Chronic Traumatic encephalopathy or
normally referred to as CTE is a brain disease that affects people who have had multiple head
injuries. It is found in many cases of ex NFL players who took many hits to the head when
playing over their careers. There are many documented cases of it across other sports and some
military veterans as well. We have made large strides in learning more and more about the terrible
disease. The game of football has changed since we have learned so much more about the terrible
disease in recent years. We could prevent concussions by changing the way players practice. CTE is
developed by taking multiple blows to the head which is why many retired football...show more

Hits inside the tackle box, however, will not fall under the new guidelines (Breslow)." This rule
change will help prevent as many hits with the head as previously because players won't want to
get penalized and hurt there chances of winning a game. It will hopefully lower the number of
concussions per game from running backs because they currently get 1 in every 9 concussions in
the NFL (Breslow). This new rule was created to lower that number and prevent as many every
season. I think a bigger change that we could make is having players learn to tackle at practice
without helmets on. There was a study done by the University of New Hampshire football team
and The National Athletic Trainers Research and Education Foundation where they tested the
impact of players practicing with helmets and some without. The goal of this study was to see if
helmetless practice would teach players to not tackle using their heads which currently is a main
reason why players get concussions. They had the control group practice with helmets on, while the
intervention group did not wear shoulder pads or helmets. They completed a five minute drill and
the purpose of not wear pads or helmets was supposed to teach the players to learn to tackle without
using their heads in a way that they could be injured. They found substantial evidence that this
helped prevent head injuries, it resulted in a 28% reduction in head injuries over the course of the
football season for

COMM101 Reflective Paper– My top 10 takeaways from COMM101
Coming into UBC I had no idea of what to expect from the capstone course of Sauder. On the first
day, Jeff said that everything would connect in the end; I didn't realize how true that is until now. He
meant that every bit and piece in the course was literally interconnected with not just class concepts
but to the entire business world. Throughout the term, I not only learned about business
fundamentals, but life and people skills as well. Presenting ideas, pitching, teamwork and just
making an argument in general were simple yet essential skills that I picked up and refined.
Getting a feel for all the different disciplines Sauder has to offer was a given, but processing those
soft kills were my biggest takeaway yet. Honestly speaking, coming into Sauder, I was sure about
business as a career. However, I always had an interest in political science at the back of my mind.
Leaving this course, I now know that a career in both is something definitely achievable. With the
numerous guest speakers as well as the US election that happened simultaneously throughout the
term I learned that business and politics could be blended into a diverse field of opportunities; given
that I put in more than I expect and work hard.
TOOLKIT
Building my business toolkit throughout the term was fascinating. I was initially skeptical that the
toolkit we learned in class could be applicable to businesses of all sizes, from real corporations

їјпїјIntroduction
Nowadays, many people view English as a global language. With more and more people speak
English as a second and foreign language. English speakers play an important role in international
business and economics. The data shows that there are over 350 million people speak English as
their first language around the world. It also shows that more than 430 million people use
English as their second language. As people develop knowledge of Standard English like British
English and American English, they may not hear of many other English varieties. World
Englishes is a term that we use to describe different varieties of English and the varieties are
developed in different territories or countries. It's important for us to use the appropriate approach
and understand the different varieties of English. Methodology The study of World Englishes
involves interdisciplinary and integrative approaches and covers a variety of subjects and fields.
Kachru (1992) listed the following approaches to the study of world Englishes: 1. The spread and
stratification of English Based on the historical status and its social functions of English in the
countries, Kachru (1992) describe varieties of World Englishes in terms of three circles: nпЃ® In

Annotated Bibliography List : Ted Talk Essay
Annotated Resource List TED Talk Information The TED Talk video that I watched was Why do
we sleep by Russel Foster. This TED talk was about why we need sleep and how getting less than
the suggested amount affects the brain. There are three main reasons why we need sleep;
restoration, energy conservation, and brain function. Only certain genes are turned on when you
sleep so you need to sleep in order for those genes to turn on and allow you other genes to be
restored, while sleeping you save about 110 calories, sleep helps enhance creativity, and your
brain is less likely to retain information if you're sleep deprived and trying to cram information. On
average a teen needs 9 hours of sleep, in the 1950s the average teen was getting 8 hours of sleep,
today on average teens are getting 5 hours of sleep, which is half the amount that we need. If you're
not receiving the amount of sleep that you need your body will uncountable got into micro–sleeping
which will happen to at least 31% of drivers in their lifetime. When a person has lack of sleep they
will experience memory loss, increases impulsiveness, and poor judgement. When lacking these
qualities, the brain craves things to fill these gaps. To fill these cravings, the brain will try to use
things like alcohol and drugs to sedate you. This can also lead to weight gain because your will
release a hormone signaling to your brain that you need more carbohydrates and sugars. A study that
was noted in this TED Talk was a

Library Essay
Libraries are an essential part of the community. However not all societies have libraries. Libraries
require centralized populations, economic development and political stability for their survival.
Libraries exist in places where peace exists. They cannot exist in places with full of conflicts.
Libraries have different missions and serve different communities differently. People and
organizations establish libraries with different missions. Historical overview shows that libraries
have always had missions.
The earliest mission of libraries was to maintain an archive for records. There is not information that
shows when the first library was established. In the past, temples, municipals and governments had

Therefore, Julius Caesar started building a public library, but died before he completed it. Asinius
Pollio completed the library. This established was followed by more public libraries. Other missions
of libraries that existed in the past included maintaining scholarly mission, religious mission, for
instance, monastic libraries of middles ages, educational mission, for instance university, humanistic
mission and promoting national pride (Rubin 39).
In the modern world, libraries have certain missions that they serve. The establishment of the
printing press made more books available to many people. This encouraged the establishment of
more libraries. In the United States of America, libraries came up with new missions. First, libraries
emerged with the mission of self–improvement. Advances in mechanical technology in the
eighteenth century led to industrial revolution that improved the economy and community health.
This meant that a certain class of citizens had more leisure time, for self–improvement. This favored
the emergence o f new libraries. The social library emerged with an aim of helping individuals
improve through the search of truth. Therefore, they provided literature and books that provided
information, which could help people to gain knowledge and improve their character. In the current
world, libraries provide information that people have access to, and use it for their own
improvement (Rubin 47).
Secondly, the modern world

Definition Essay About Music
"What do you like listening to?" It's a question that receives numerous answers, yet all vary from
person to person. When people ask me, I can never give them a definite answer. It's not because I
don't listen to the wide genre of music or I don't wish for them to know what I like. It's actually due
to me not being able to explain it in a simple manner. Music brings in what other cannot do. It's able
to tell a story, be entertaining, and make me feel something in a span of a few minutes. Music and
what it brings, whether it's being broadcasted on the radio or me playing music on the violin, has
and will be an important part of my life. The importance of music relies heavenly on its ability to
tell a story, be entertaining, and make me feel something just from one song. For every song with
lyrics to the instruments playing a piece, they all tell a story about the music itself. This applies to
every genre there is, whether it's sung or not. The artist of the piece writes what they feel...show more

Because of how large the genre music has, this allows for options that fit based on preference. In
my experience, I would plug in my earphones, open my playlist in Spotify and listen for hours.
This would happen all the time starting from the early morning of breakfast to the time I go to
bed. This could vary from the intense sounds the instruments are making to that overly played
song on the radio. This is quite entertaining because these type of music are what I enjoy the most.
To many like myself, music is gateaway from the real world to another. It's able to turn people
feeling down to feeling content because of their pick on music. People generally pick songs that
they enjoy as it makes them feel good listening to it. This is similar to my case as I pick the types
of songs that makes me feel good because of how great the music

An Argument Essay About Discrimination
Argument Essay
Some may say discrimination in America is a thing in the past, but is this a true statement? Are men
and women always seen and treated as equals in our new and reformed nation? I am sure there are
many debates out there proving or disproving this potential issue, but one in particular has caught
my eye. Our military is made up of many different sections, and the men and women who were
brave enough to raise their right hand and enlist in the service were given a skill to master
resulting in a job to perform up to the highest standard. The military has many job offerings, ranging
from supply specialist, which would be someone doing paper work and giving the other soldiers
what they need to get their job done, all the way to infantry, those who are trained to engage, fight,
and defeat the enemy in combat. Both men and women are authorized to enlist in the service, but
both are not allowed to train in all job positions.
It is no secret that when high controversy topics arise in the media, people have their personal
opinions, each one believing they are "right." Is there always a "right" or "wrong" answer, or can
the morally correct answer be a combination of both sides of the argument? Should women be
allowed to earn an infantry job in the military? When questioning those concerned with this topic the
answers will be mixed with yes and no, each having their own opinions to back up their argument. If
a woman wants and is able to perform to the training

"You know, the ancient Egyptians had a beautiful belief about death. When their souls go to the
entrance to heaven, the guards asked two questions. Their answers determined whether they were
able to enter or not. Have you found joy in your life? Has your life brought joy to others." This
quote came from Carter Chambers, played by Morgan Freeman in the movie "The Bucket List."
The Bucket List is a movie about two men who meet in the cancer ward and are roommates. Both
men form an unlikely friendship as they come from different walks of life. One is a very wealthy
man, the other, a mechanic who worked his whole life to support his family. They are both...show
more content...
At the beginning of the movie, all Edward had was his corporation, money and personal assistant.
Those things were not what made him happy, but finally by fulfilling Carter's last wishes he was
able to find the joy he had never seen beyond his wealth. The same joy Carter had his whole life,
living with very little other than a family who loved him and he loved as well.
This movie touches very much on ethics and the meaning of life. There is also a correlation with this
movie and Socrates quote "the unexamined life is not worth living." This quote goes well with
the plot of the movie in the fact that both men still had a lot of learning to do before they passed
away. Edward needed to learn the value of relationships and how to find joy in things that did not
require money. Where as Carter had not lived a life beyond being a mechanic and being a husband
and father and so therefore his life could also be viewed as unexamined as well. In the end, they
both were able to find the meaning of life.
The quote also can be viewed also as a form of utilitarianism. When Carter asks if his life has
brought joy to others this could be viewed as utilitarian in the fact that finding joy in your own life
is just as important as others finding joy in your life. What have you done not only for yourself but
for the joy of others? What in your life might generate the greatest net good for the greatest number
of people?

  • 1. Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay on Listening for Understanding Listening for Understanding Listening is an important form of communication. Unfortunately, many people who do not know how to listen believe they can listen well. They often say "I have been doing this all of my life of course I can listen". Listening is not inherited, or a personality trait, it is a skill that must be worked on and practiced. Anybody can become a good listener if they are committed to learn how and are willing to work hard. The first mistake that people tend to make when listening is to not make any type of comments while listening. They tend to just stand there and listen while the speaker talks. This can become very frustrating for the speaker and the listener. While the speaker may feel like he isn't being ...show more content... Try to listen to what the speaker is trying to say and not to what is making you angry. Summarize the main points of what the speaker was saying so that the focus is on the speaker and not you. It is always important to try and listen objectively no matter what the speaker is trying to say. By doing this, you will become a better listener and more able to communicate with others concerning subjects that might normally make you angry to the point that you would no longer be able to carry on a working conversation with that individual. This will make you especially valuable in the management industry where, as a rule, people will come to you with problems that need to be resolved. It is important to listen carefully and to withhold personal judgement. This is especially true when the subject matter or the position taken by the speaker is making you angry. In this circumstance, your interjections, if not thoroughly thought through, may just make the person defensive. Problems can also arise if you are too nice and give a lot of positive comments. People like it when they are being praised. This can alter what the speaker is saying. If you continue to give positive comments the speaker will continue to want more of them from you. If you want to find out what the speaker is really thinking you need to listen and withhold evaluation. As well as withholding evaluation one must also show patience. While many Get more content on HelpWriting.net

WP Company, 01 May 2014. Web. 12 Nov. 2017. In this article it states what all methods are used for the death penalty. In Eight states it allows electrocution (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia). Three states it allows the gas chamber (Arizona, Missouri, and Wyoming). Three other states allow hanging (Delaware, New Hampshire, and Washington). Two other states allow the firing squad (Oklahoma and Utah), though only Oklahoma is the one that uses it. Utah allowed that option before it was banned in 2004. "Death Penalty Facts– Amnesty International USA." Amnesty International USA. Web. 12 Nov. 2017. What all cost putting someone on death row includes criminal's investigation, lengthy trials and appeals. It takes a few steps to put someone on death row. This is leading many states to re–evaluate and re–consider having it system in the book. "Does Death Penalty Save Lives? A New Debate." The New York Times. The New York Times. Web. 12 Nov. 2017. • 4. CTE Essay CTE affects many different athletes all over the world. Chronic Traumatic encephalopathy or normally referred to as CTE is a brain disease that affects people who have had multiple head injuries. It is found in many cases of ex NFL players who took many hits to the head when playing over their careers. There are many documented cases of it across other sports and some military veterans as well. We have made large strides in learning more and more about the terrible disease. The game of football has changed since we have learned so much more about the terrible disease in recent years. We could prevent concussions by changing the way players practice. CTE is developed by taking multiple blows to the head which is why many retired football...show more content... Hits inside the tackle box, however, will not fall under the new guidelines (Breslow)." This rule change will help prevent as many hits with the head as previously because players won't want to get penalized and hurt there chances of winning a game. It will hopefully lower the number of concussions per game from running backs because they currently get 1 in every 9 concussions in the NFL (Breslow). This new rule was created to lower that number and prevent as many every season. I think a bigger change that we could make is having players learn to tackle at practice without helmets on. There was a study done by the University of New Hampshire football team and The National Athletic Trainers Research and Education Foundation where they tested the impact of players practicing with helmets and some without. The goal of this study was to see if helmetless practice would teach players to not tackle using their heads which currently is a main reason why players get concussions. They had the control group practice with helmets on, while the intervention group did not wear shoulder pads or helmets. They completed a five minute drill and the purpose of not wear pads or helmets was supposed to teach the players to learn to tackle without using their heads in a way that they could be injured. They found substantial evidence that this helped prevent head injuries, it resulted in a 28% reduction in head injuries over the course of the football season for Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 8. COMM101 Reflective Paper– My top 10 takeaways from COMM101 Coming into UBC I had no idea of what to expect from the capstone course of Sauder. On the first day, Jeff said that everything would connect in the end; I didn't realize how true that is until now. He meant that every bit and piece in the course was literally interconnected with not just class concepts but to the entire business world. Throughout the term, I not only learned about business fundamentals, but life and people skills as well. Presenting ideas, pitching, teamwork and just making an argument in general were simple yet essential skills that I picked up and refined. Getting a feel for all the different disciplines Sauder has to offer was a given, but processing those soft kills were my biggest takeaway yet. Honestly speaking, coming into Sauder, I was sure about business as a career. However, I always had an interest in political science at the back of my mind. Leaving this course, I now know that a career in both is something definitely achievable. With the numerous guest speakers as well as the US election that happened simultaneously throughout the term I learned that business and politics could be blended into a diverse field of opportunities; given that I put in more than I expect and work hard. TOOLKIT Building my business toolkit throughout the term was fascinating. I was initially skeptical that the toolkit we learned in class could be applicable to businesses of all sizes, from real corporations Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The data shows that there are over 350 million people speak English as their first language around the world. It also shows that more than 430 million people use English as their second language. As people develop knowledge of Standard English like British English and American English, they may not hear of many other English varieties. • 10. Annotated Bibliography List : Ted Talk Essay Annotated Resource List TED Talk Information The TED Talk video that I watched was Why do we sleep by Russel Foster. This TED talk was about why we need sleep and how getting less than the suggested amount affects the brain. There are three main reasons why we need sleep; restoration, energy conservation, and brain function. Only certain genes are turned on when you sleep so you need to sleep in order for those genes to turn on and allow you other genes to be restored, while sleeping you save about 110 calories, sleep helps enhance creativity, and your brain is less likely to retain information if you're sleep deprived and trying to cram information. On average a teen needs 9 hours of sleep, in the 1950s the average teen was getting 8 hours of sleep, today on average teens are getting 5 hours of sleep, which is half the amount that we need. If you're not receiving the amount of sleep that you need your body will uncountable got into micro–sleeping which will happen to at least 31% of drivers in their lifetime. When a person has lack of sleep they will experience memory loss, increases impulsiveness, and poor judgement. When lacking these qualities, the brain craves things to fill these gaps. To fill these cravings, the brain will try to use things like alcohol and drugs to sedate you. This can also lead to weight gain because your will release a hormone signaling to your brain that you need more carbohydrates and sugars. • 11. Library Essay Libraries are an essential part of the community. However not all societies have libraries. Libraries require centralized populations, economic development and political stability for their survival. Libraries exist in places where peace exists. They cannot exist in places with full of conflicts. Libraries have different missions and serve different communities differently. People and organizations establish libraries with different missions. Historical overview shows that libraries have always had missions. The earliest mission of libraries was to maintain an archive for records. There is not information that shows when the first library was established. In the past, temples, municipals and governments had libraries. These libraries...show more content... Therefore, Julius Caesar started building a public library, but died before he completed it. Asinius Pollio completed the library. This established was followed by more public libraries. Other missions of libraries that existed in the past included maintaining scholarly mission, religious mission, for instance, monastic libraries of middles ages, educational mission, for instance university, humanistic mission and promoting national pride (Rubin 39). In the modern world, libraries have certain missions that they serve. The establishment of the printing press made more books available to many people. This encouraged the establishment of more libraries. In the United States of America, libraries came up with new missions. First, libraries emerged with the mission of self–improvement. Advances in mechanical technology in the eighteenth century led to industrial revolution that improved the economy and community health. This meant that a certain class of citizens had more leisure time, for self–improvement. This favored the emergence o f new libraries. The social library emerged with an aim of helping individuals improve through the search of truth. Therefore, they provided literature and books that provided information, which could help people to gain knowledge and improve their character. In the current world, libraries provide information that people have access to, and use it for their own improvement (Rubin 47). Secondly, the modern world Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 13. Definition Essay About Music "What do you like listening to?" It's a question that receives numerous answers, yet all vary from person to person. When people ask me, I can never give them a definite answer. It's not because I don't listen to the wide genre of music or I don't wish for them to know what I like. It's actually due to me not being able to explain it in a simple manner. Music brings in what other cannot do. It's able to tell a story, be entertaining, and make me feel something in a span of a few minutes. Music and what it brings, whether it's being broadcasted on the radio or me playing music on the violin, has and will be an important part of my life. The importance of music relies heavenly on its ability to tell a story, be entertaining, and make me feel something just from one song. For every song with lyrics to the instruments playing a piece, they all tell a story about the music itself. This applies to every genre there is, whether it's sung or not. The artist of the piece writes what they feel...show more content... Because of how large the genre music has, this allows for options that fit based on preference. In my experience, I would plug in my earphones, open my playlist in Spotify and listen for hours. This would happen all the time starting from the early morning of breakfast to the time I go to bed. This could vary from the intense sounds the instruments are making to that overly played song on the radio. This is quite entertaining because these type of music are what I enjoy the most. To many like myself, music is gateaway from the real world to another. It's able to turn people feeling down to feeling content because of their pick on music. People generally pick songs that they enjoy as it makes them feel good listening to it. This is similar to my case as I pick the types of songs that makes me feel good because of how great the music Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Only in the conclusion can you express your own point of view. Notice the use of report structures (e.g. feel that), passives and formal linkers (e.g. moreover, furthermore) in the sentences below. Listing arguments: Many people feel that harder sentences should be brought back. The American system of 'three strikes and out' has supporters in Britain. Moreover, some people say that conditions in prisons are too soft. There are arguments for the restoration of the death penalty. The wishes of victims' family and friends possibly need to be taken into account. There are arguments against harder sentences and capital punishment One of the arguments against longer prison sentence is that the prisons are already full. Other people disagree and think that prisons should reform

  • 20. An Argument Essay About Discrimination Argument Essay Some may say discrimination in America is a thing in the past, but is this a true statement? Are men and women always seen and treated as equals in our new and reformed nation? I am sure there are many debates out there proving or disproving this potential issue, but one in particular has caught my eye. Our military is made up of many different sections, and the men and women who were brave enough to raise their right hand and enlist in the service were given a skill to master resulting in a job to perform up to the highest standard. The military has many job offerings, ranging from supply specialist, which would be someone doing paper work and giving the other soldiers what they need to get their job done, all the way to infantry, those who are trained to engage, fight, and defeat the enemy in combat. Both men and women are authorized to enlist in the service, but both are not allowed to train in all job positions. It is no secret that when high controversy topics arise in the media, people have their personal opinions, each one believing they are "right." Is there always a "right" or "wrong" answer, or can the morally correct answer be a combination of both sides of the argument? Should women be allowed to earn an infantry job in the military? When questioning those concerned with this topic the answers will be mixed with yes and no, each having their own opinions to back up their argument. If a woman wants and is able to perform to the training Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 22. The Bucket List Reaction Paper Kristin Villavicencio Idea Critique #1 Phil–1113 Bond Love 22 Oct 2012 "You know, the ancient Egyptians had a beautiful belief about death. When their souls go to the entrance to heaven, the guards asked two questions. Their answers determined whether they were able to enter or not. Have you found joy in your life? Has your life brought joy to others." This quote came from Carter Chambers, played by Morgan Freeman in the movie "The Bucket List." The Bucket List is a movie about two men who meet in the cancer ward and are roommates. Both men form an unlikely friendship as they come from different walks of life. One is a very wealthy man, the other, a mechanic who worked his whole life to support his family. They are both...show more content... At the beginning of the movie, all Edward had was his corporation, money and personal assistant. Those things were not what made him happy, but finally by fulfilling Carter's last wishes he was able to find the joy he had never seen beyond his wealth. The same joy Carter had his whole life, living with very little other than a family who loved him and he loved as well. This movie touches very much on ethics and the meaning of life. There is also a correlation with this movie and Socrates quote "the unexamined life is not worth living." This quote goes well with the plot of the movie in the fact that both men still had a lot of learning to do before they passed away. Edward needed to learn the value of relationships and how to find joy in things that did not require money. Where as Carter had not lived a life beyond being a mechanic and being a husband and father and so therefore his life could also be viewed as unexamined as well. In the end, they both were able to find the meaning of life. The quote also can be viewed also as a form of utilitarianism. When Carter asks if his life has brought joy to others this could be viewed as utilitarian in the fact that finding joy in your own life is just as important as others finding joy in your life. What have you done not only for yourself but for the joy of others? What in your life might generate the greatest net good for the greatest number of people? Get more content on HelpWriting.net
