Google recently announced that it is rolling out a significant redesign for its social networking platform Google+, which will allow users to create a more customized experience on the site.
The company said it will introduce a variety of new features to the site in the next few days, from customizing apps and the navigation bar to more flexibility with profile pages and pictures. In addition, the update introduces a new Explore page that posts what’s interesting and trending across the site.
Google also noted that the social network now boasts more than 170 million users since it’s 2011 launch.
Here is a look at the 8 major changes.

Google also noted that the social network now boasts more than 170
million users since it‟s 2011 launch.
Here is a look at the 6 major changes.
5. Application Ribbon
The first thing you'll notice with the new Google Plus
look is there's now a left hand application ribbon.
Instead of static icons at the top, the ribbon allows
users to drag apps up or down to create the order,
hover over certain apps to reveal a set of quick
actions and show or hide apps by moving them out
of the section. The idea is to make it easier for you
to get to the parts of Google Plus you hang out the
most in.
6. Profile
The profile hasn‟t changed much but it now offers the option to have a „cover
photo‟, a la Facebook‟s Timeline. It is also reversed from the previous profile with
the profile photo being on the right insead of left.
7. Profile- Cover Photo
To add a cover photo:
Hover over your photos and you will see a change photos bar.
Click the left cover photo template (Choose right template if you don‟t want a cover
photo.)
Click change cover photo to add your own custom image. (940 X 180px)
8. Hangouts and Chat
As you know, you can chat face to
face with up to 9 people at same
time, accept others invitations to
Hangout, and also have a private
one on one hangout. The Hangout
button is now shifted to top right in
your browser window, just under
your profile picture. And under the
Hangouts button is your Chat
window, which is also updated.
10. Explore
The Explore icon is also a new addition, and takes you to a page showing
the trending and popular content across the network. This can be found on
the application ribbon.
11. Whitespace?
What Google‟s Vic Gundotra didn‟t talk
about when he announced the changes
being made was the fact that Google has
now also switched to a responsive web
design for Google+. Instead of a traditional
fixed-width design, responsive design
adapts to the size of your browser window.
So while your Facebook page always
looks the same, no matter whether you‟ve
maximized your browser window or not,
the new Google+ design actually changes
as you re-size your browser window.
12. Whitespace?
This is leaving people somewhat confused about why there is suddenly so much
whitespace on the site. Indeed, the #whitespace hashtag is currently trending on the
site and it‟s probably the most discussed “feature” of the new design.
In a short hangout earlier this morning, Vic pointed out that Google is obviously quite
aware of the whitespace. He also said that Google isn‟t planning to use the space for
advertising, but wouldn‟t say more about it.
13. Whitespace?
Here is a simple Google Chrome plugin to fix
the whitespace problem in the new google+
design 2012, till it gets fixed by Google+ team
officially. This is a temporary fix for Google+
Whitespace problem and makes your Google+
page looks well organized and removes the
whitespace when you access Google Plus from
Chrome web browser.
14. Events
Google Plus has released its latest feature
to help users connect with their friends
and colleagues: Events. Facebook Events
are geared towards getting people
together, but Google Plus seeks to help
people plan beforehand as well as share
their experiences during and after the
event. Through its design and prominent
placement on profiles, Events promises to
be a collection of group photo albums for
commemorating special times, online and
offline.
15. Suggestions
When you first log in on the right-hand sidebar,
Google+ now suggests that people check out
certain pages. It‟s unclear how they determine
what pages you might like, but pages seem to
be associated with those followed by people
you‟ve circled.
In other words, the more your page is circled,
the more likely it will appear on the sidebar. This
is essentially like getting free ad space for your
business, so make an effort to build up your
followers to get featured here.
16. New Interface
“It‟s still early days, and there‟s
plenty left to do, but we‟re
more excited than ever to build
a seamless social experience,
all across Google,” says
Gundotra.
