Notas do Editor
Nga mihi nui kia koutou Ko Jacqueline Te Huia toku ingoa. I’m the Kia Piki te Ora Coordinator for the Mid North / Whangarei region. I work for Ngati Hine Health Trust & accompanied by Kipa Munro my Service Manager & Sue Cooper my Team leader. Tena ra koutou katoa. Objective 2 is Help improve the care of people who are experiencing mental disorders associated with suicidal behaviours within the community.
With goal 1 the aims are we seek to reduce risk factors
We need to look at the development of strategies, policies & services that lead to: improved recognition, treatment & management of Maori who are experiencing mental disorders
The Key actions for Objective 2 are: Population based Strategies & looking at Community, Health & Institutional approaches. Through Health Promotion we promote Mental Health awareness & look to reduce stigma & discrimination towards Mental illness in our community, by promoting at local festivals & events. We take the time to relate & korero with our communities. Some of us have been there & done that & can encourage our people to begin that recovery journey too. Improving access to services is achieved as we encourage our people to seek help swiftly & provide information of local helping agencies they can access in their local community. In looking at improving effectiveness of services & community responsiveness , we network with other services, agencies, practitioners & those who work with our people affected by mental illness & suicide. We analyse the services & identify any service gaps. Through Community hui, we look at these issues & collaborate on ways we can improve services, policies & procedures to see positive outcomes for our people. We encourage the incorporation of Maori Models of Health.
The Heart of Kia Piki te Ora is about promoting Mauri Ora & connection to our culture, whanau, hapu, iwi, wairua, whenua, goals & dreams. Cultural development is a protective factor against suicide and all these connections are what enhance & strengthen our wellbeing as Maori. Unveiling the greatness that lies within & setting us on a pathway of Mauri Ora Wellbeing.
Discuss here how Kia Piki works alongside and provides the support mechanism to internal service deliveries (e.g) school expo’s, community expo’s, specifically designed school deliveries. Through activities such as Off da Wail, YAP, and other intervention programmes.... Discuss also the resources that Te Oranga has in regards to services provided, and how to access these service/s.
The importance of relationships with external providers (to identify local postvention services that are available in our area) and build relationships with providers, the importance of acting as advocates in our communities to enable our community knowledge around how to access service (ours and others). Linkages with our ruanuku programme (Kaumatua, Kuia mentoring programme, that has been established by Te Rarawa for the purpose of supporting whanau) Mum’s Dads, Rangitahi, with various issues.
Korihi te manu takiri mai I te ata Ka ao, Ka ao, Ka awatea. The bird sings, the morning has dawned, the day has broken behold there is life!
