This document provides a history of nonprofit boards in the United States, beginning with the earliest colonial settlements. It discusses how the Massachusetts Bay Company charter created the first American board to manage the colonial government. It then describes how governing boards emerged to oversee churches, towns, and Harvard College. The struggles for control over Harvard illustrate the development of lay governance models. Alternative governance models are discussed through the founding of Yale College. The history shows how definitions of boards' roles and responsibilities have evolved over time.
