Characteristics of this Stage Ages 35 – 65 yrs This is a period where childrearing is finished The body is changing, especially if a healthy lifestyle is not followed = onset of disease Women will experience menopause Sense of security is important esp financial incl mortgage and supporting children Family and employment are focus Separation and divorce are common Working towards retirement A time of relative calm and enjoyment for most

3. Key Physical Needs Health issues need to be addressed Balanced diet Adequate rest and relaxation Age appropriate health care – eg breast cancer screening May need to adapt to physical changes – getting glasses Keep up appropriate physical exercise

4. Key Social needs Having a wide range of friends – old and new A variety of personal interests Balancing life – family and work Often re establishing relationship with spouse after children have grown

5. Key Emotional needs Adjusting to children leaving home Seeking support to cope with change such as divorce Dealing with stress – work and family Loss of parents Managing multiple role expectations Developing a new self concept Sense of purpose Security in our environment

6. Cultural and Spiritual needs English lessons if a new migrant Developing sense of heritage for children Spiritual support and guidance Establishing a sense of identity away from the family

7. Why are these needs important ? These needs are important as they will ensure the individual has a sense of wellbeing If the physical needs are met then the person will have better health and hopefully live longer If emotional needs are met the person will be happier and enjoy life Social needs mean that they will have friendship in their lives and be more able to cope with life

8. Support Groups Five support groups who may assist this stage are : Centrelink – if they need financial support Health line – for issues about health Hobby groups Parents without partners – after divorce to have social connections Local community groups they could volunteer for, to meet new people and for emotional health

9. Possible issues of concern Having enough money for retirement Their children’s future Health issues Job stability Safety and security
