LEADERSHIP QUALITIES
LEADER
• A leader is "a person who influences a group
of people towards the achievement of a goal".
A mnemonic for this definition would be 3P's -
Person, People and Purpose
• A simple definition is that leadership is the art
of motivating a group of people to act toward
achieving a common goal.
ILLUSTARTION
PERSON
• Person - Is leadership a position of office or
authority? Or, is leadership an ability in the sense
that he is a leader because he leads? We all may
know or hear of people who are in positions of
leadership but who are not providing leadership.
A position of office is no guarantee of leadership
but it helps in the sense that a leadership position
usually commands a listening ear from its people
and that is a good starting point for anyone who
desires to be a leader.
PURPOSE
• A requirement for leadership is personal vision
- the ability to visualize your goal as an
accomplished fact; a thing already achieved.
• "The very essence of leadership is that you
have to have vision. You can't blow an
uncertain trumpet." Theodore M. Hesburgh
PEOPLE
• The next requirement is the realization that the goal cannot
be achieved alone, without the help of others. Is there a
natural grouping of people from whom you can elicit help?
Or do you have to recruit your followers? In the latter, you
face a greater challenge. But whatever the situation, the
leader must integrate his (or the organization's) goal with
his followers’ personal goals and then communicates this
goal in such a way that they embrace it too and the goal
becomes a common goal.
• To be a leader, one must have followers. To have followers,
one must have their trust.

• Delegation and Empowerment

HONESTY AND INTERGRITY
• The 34th President of United States,
Dwight.D.Eisenhower once said, “The supreme
quality of leadership is unquestionably
integrity.”
• Honesty and integrity are two important
ingredients which make a good leader
Confidence
• “You gain strength, courage and confidence by
every experience in which you really stop to
look fear in the face. You must do the thing
you think you cannot do.”-Eleanor Roosevelt
(was an American political figure, diplomat
and activist)
Inspire Others
• “If your actions inspire others to dream more,
learn more, do more and become more, you
are a leader.”- John Quincy Adams (was an
American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, and
diarist who served as the sixth president of
the United States from 1825 to 1829)
COMMITMENT AND PASSION
• . "A great leader's courage to fulfill his vision
comes from passion, not position.“
• . "If you are a leader, the true measure of your
success is not getting people to work. It's not
getting people to work hard. It is getting people
to work hard together. That takes commitment. –
JOHN.C.MAXWELL(John Calvin Maxwell is an
American author, speaker, and pastor who has
written many books, primarily focusing on
leadership. His books have sold millions of copies)
GOOD COMMUNICATOR
• "There are five nonnegotiable characteristics
that every effective leader must have: a sense
of calling, an ability to communicate,
creativity in problem solving, generosity, and
consistency.”- JOHN.C.MAXWELL
Decision Making Capabilities
• A leader should have the ability to take the
right decision at the right time. Decisions
taken by leaders have a profound impact on
masses. A leader should think long and hard
before taking a decision but once the decision
is taken, stand by it.
Accountability
• Arnold H Glasow(author) when he said, “A
good leader takes little more than his share of
the blame and little less than his share of the
credit.”
Delegation and Empowerment
"When leaders fail to empower others, it is
usually due to three main reasons
• Desire for Job Security
• Resistance to Change
• Lack of Self-Worth."

• It is important for a leader to focus on key
responsibilities while leaving the rest to
others, by that, it means empowering the
followers and delegating tasks to them.
Creativity and Innovation
• "There are five nonnegotiable characteristics

• “Innovation distinguishes between a leader
and a follower” -Steve Jobs
EMPATHY
• Understanding the problems of your followers
and feeling their pain is the first step to
become an effective leader, and that is what
called empathy

articulate the vision, passionately own the
vision, and relentlessly drive it to
completion.”—Jack Welch(business executive)
