Design in the City is an artist coop on Bezalel Street in Jersualem. Artists have very affordable studio space, to both work and sell their products. The basement of the space has an oven for ceramics and tools to cut metals and sew clothes. The entrance is a cafe.
Wonderful! A lot of cities could learn from this model. The art school is just down the street.
19. The basement
In the basement, there is equipment and workspace for
the artists, for example an oven for ceramics, and the
cutting tools for metals, as well as sewing machines
20. Notes
• Costs 150 NIS to rent per square meter
• Artists apply online
• Winter is the hardest month
• A lot more female artists
• Very friendly and pleasant – if I wasn’t travelling
with a backpack, I would have purchased some of
the goods – especially the ceramics!
