                •   A.K.A – “India’s Political Capital”

Qutub Minar
           • History:
           1. Qutubuddin Aibak laid the foundation of
              Qutab Minar as a victory tower, in 1199 AD.
              Originally, it rose to a height of 72.5 m. It is
              undoubtedly one of the finest stone towers in
              India

           •   Location: Mehrauli, South Delhi

           •   Getting there: Qutub Minar Station is the
               nearest Metro station to Qutub Minar

           •   Distance: 8 miles from The Claridges,
               Surajkund

           •   Off Days: Open all days

           •   Other Information: Decorative Light Show
               from 5:30 pm till 8 pm

Jama Masjid
           • History:
           1. Jama Masjid of Delhi is the largest mosque in
              India. The Jama Masjid stands across the road
              in front of the Red Fort (Lal Qila)
           2. It was built between 1644 and 1658. Jama
              Masjid is one of the last architectural works of
              the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan

           •   Location: Opposite the Red Fort

           •   Getting there: The closest Metro station is the
               Chandini Chowk Metro Station

           •   Distance: 11.9 miles from The Claridges,
               Surajkund

           •   Off Days: Open all days

           •   Other Information: Timings are 8.30 a.m. -
               5.00 p.m. but visitors are not allowed between
               12:15 pm to 1:45 pm

Humayun’s Tomb
            • History:
            1. The second Mughal Emperor Humayun died
               just a year after he regained Delhi
            2. His Persian wife, Hamida Begum, supervised
               the construction of his tomb from 1562-1572
            3. It was designed by the Persian architect,
               Mirak Mirza Ghiyuath

            •   Location: South Delhi, near Hazrat Nizamuddin
                Railway Station

            •   Getting there: Pragati Maidan and
                Indraprastha Metro Stations are the closest
                Humayun's Tomb is just 10 minutes by auto
                rickshaw from both of these stations

            •   Distance: 7.5 miles from The Claridges,
                Surajkund

            •   Off Days: Open all days

            •   Other Information: Washroom available but no

Red Fort
          • History:
          1. The Red Fort is the most important historical
             building in Delhi
          2. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan laid the
             foundation in 1639 and it was completed in
             1648
          3. Today, a sound and light show describing
             Mughal history is a tourist attraction in the
             evenings

          •   Location: Old Delhi, near Chandini Chowk

          •   Getting there: The most scenic way of
              reaching the fort is to take the Metro to
              Chandini Chowk Metro Station and then a
              cycle-rickshaw through the incredibly packed
              bazaar to the Fort (price negotiable, aim for
              Rs. 20)

          •   Distance: 11.9 miles from The Claridges,
              Surajkund

          •   Off Days: Monday Closed

Jantar Mantar
            • History:
            1. Jantar Mantar is Delhi's historical astronomical
               observatory that was constructed by Maharaja
               Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur, India in 1724

            •   Location: Parliament Street, near Connaught
                Place

            •   Getting there: Rajiv Chowk Metro Station is
                the closest

            •   Distance: 10.4 miles from The Claridges,
                Surajkund

Parliament House
              • History:
              1. The Parliament of India is the supreme
                 legislative body in India.
              2. Founded in 1919, the Parliament alone
                 possesses legislative supremacy and thereby
                 ultimate power over all political bodies in
                 India.
              3. The Parliament of India comprises the
                 President and the two Houses, Lok Sabha
                 (House of the People) and Rajya Sabha
                 (Council of States)

              •   Location: Parliament Street, Delhi

              •   Getting there: Central Secretariat Metro
                  Station is the closest

India Gate
            • History:
            1. The India Gate is the national monument of
               India. Situated in the heart of New Delhi,
               India Gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens
            2. Originally known as All India War Memorial, it
               commemorates the 90,000 soldiers of the
               British Indian Army who lost their lives while
               fighting for the British Raj in World War I
            3. It is composed of red sand stone and granite

            •   Location: Rajpath, New Delhi

            •   Getting there: Central Secratriat is the
                nearest Metro station to India Gate

Raj Ghat
          • History:
          1. Raj Ghat, is the cremation site of Mahatma
             Gandhi
          2. It consists of a simple square black-marble
             platform that stands on the spot where
             Mahatma Gandhi was cremated

          •   Location: Mahatma Gandhi Road

          •   Getting there: Kashmiri Gate is the nearest
              Metro station to Raj Ghat

          •   Distance: 10.6 miles from The Claridges,
              Surajkund

Mughal Gardens
             • History:
             1. Sprawled across six hectares of the
                Rashtrapati Bhavan complex, the famous
                Mughal Gardens were designed by Sir Edwin
                Lutyens for Lady Harding
             2. These gardens combine the formal Mughal
                style with the British garden designs

             •   Location: Mughal Gardens is situated within
                 the presidential estate flanking the
                 Rashtrapati Bhavan. Entrance is from gate
                 number 35, North Avenue, Church Road


             •   Getting there: Central Secretariat Metro
                 Station is the closest

             •   Distance: 9.2 miles from The Claridges,

Lotus Temple
            • History:
            1. The Bahá'í House of Worship is popularly
               known as the Lotus Temple due to its
               flowerlike shape
            2. Inspired by the lotus flower, the design for the
               House of Worship is composed of 27 free-
               standing marble clad "petals" arranged in
               clusters of three to form nine sides
            3. The temple was built by a Persian architect,
               Fariborz Sahba and was completed in 1986

            •   Location: Kalkaji, South Delhi. Opposite the
                famous Kalkaji Temple and near the ISKCON
                Temple

            •   Getting there: Kalkaji Mandir is the nearest
                Metro Station

            •   Distance: 4.7 miles from The Claridges,
                Surajkund

Birla Mandir
             • History:
             1. Built in 1938, famous Birla Mandir in Delhi was
                inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi on the
                express condition that people of all castes and
                especially untouchables would be allowed in
             2. A plaque at the gate reiterates that people of
                all faiths and classes are welcome

             •   Location: Mandir Marg, Delhi. 1.5 km from
                 Connaught Place

             •   Getting there: Ram Krishna Ashram Metro
                 Station is the closest

Akshardham Temple
               • History:
               1. Akshardham Temple is a magnificent Hindu
                  shrine located on the banks of River Yamuna
               2. The building is constructed entirely from Pink
                  Sandstone and Italian marble, without any
                  concrete or steel
               3. The intricate carvings, magnanimous structure
                  and the backdrop of River Yamuna, render the
                  temple a masterpiece of art

               •   Location: Off National Highway 24, East Delhi

               •   Getting there: Akshardham Metro Station is
                   the closest

               •   Distance: 8.6 miles from The Claridges,
                   Surajkund

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib
                 • History:
                 1. One of the most important historical and
                    sacred pilgrimage destinations of the Sikh
                    community, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is the
                    ‘Haveli’ or palace where Guru Hari Krishan,
                    the eighth Sikh Guru stayed during his tour to
                    Delhi in 1664

                 •   Location: Asoka Road, near Connaught
                      Place

             • History:
             1. This magnificent temple has been constructed
                by 'International Society for Krishna
                Consciousness', an organization dedicated to
                the worship and propagation of Lord Krishna

                 located at the East of Kailash locality near the
                 Lotus Temple

             •   Getting there: Disembark at Indraprastha
                 Metro Station and take an auto

                market, full of silver jewelry

            • History:
            1. Dilli Haat is spread over an area of

               footwear, to sophisticated fabric and drapery,
               to gems and beads to metal crafts offers an

             Indian state of Haryana

              Gurgaon. The stations out there are Garden
              estate, Sikandarpur, IFFCO chowk and HUDA
              city center.

Something About Delhi • A.K.A – “India’s Political Capital” • Population – 16.7 million (2011 census) • Population Density– 29,259 /sq.km • Languages – Hindi, English widely spoken • Climate - 670 F – 1240 F (Summers), 60 F– 540F (Winters); Average Humidity – 50 % • Major Industries – Automobiles, Engineering, clothing & chemicals predominate, electronics and electrical goods are gaining importance.   • 5. Qutub Minar • History: 1. Qutubuddin Aibak laid the foundation of Qutab Minar as a victory tower, in 1199 AD. Originally, it rose to a height of 72.5 m. His Persian wife, Hamida Begum, supervised the construction of his tomb from 1562-1572 3.
