2. What is New Media
Technology?
Media today has been changed through the advancements in
digital technology.
The media used to be primarily based on analogue and print
broadcast models.
New Media now relies on digital technologies as previously
separate media converges. The most prominent example of
media convergence is the internet whereby the technology for
video and audio streaming is rapidly evolving.
Most technologies described as "new media" are digital, often
having characteristics of being manipulated, networkable,
dense, compressible, and interactive. Some other examples
include, websites, computer multimedia, computer games,
CD-ROMS, and DVDs.
3. Definitions of New Media
There has been a clear shift in media from print products, radio and
the first televisions to the way it is now. This is due to new media
technology.
New media is global. The concept that new methods of
communicating in the digital world allow smaller groups of people to
congregate online and share, sell and swap goods and information. It
also allows more people to have a voice in their community and in
the world in general. This makes it easier to get an audience as we are
able to reach more people than ever before.
New media defeats time and space. New media holds out a
possibility of on-demand access to content anytime, anywhere, on any
digital device, as well as interactive user feedback, creative
participation and community formation around the media content.
This means we could access our blogs from school or at home.
4. Definitions of New Media
It is a mostly driven by user generated content which gives the
audience more power than they have had on the past. Social
networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube allow us to
portray a persona to the world that we have created and may not be at
all similar how you are in real life. We represent ourselves as media
students but also as a production company on our blog.
It is interactive, digital and collaborative. Another important
promise of new media is the "democratization" of the creation,
publishing, distribution and consumption of media content. Work can
now be shared onto the internet. We are sharing our work with you.
It implies that the user obtains the material via desktop and laptop
computers, smartphones and tablets. Every company in the
developed world is involved with new media.
6. Advantages of Search
Engines
Search engines were the quickest and most efficient
way we researched elements for our trailer, poster
and magazine cover in our genre.
We were already aware of search engines and how to
use them, as we all use them on a daily basis.
Using a search engine gave us the opportunity to
choose information from a variety of sources.
We were able to filter our searches to find
specifically what we needed quickly.
Our research was specific to our chosen genre.
Internet access is the basis of new media technology – it is what
allows the interactivity and collaboration to take place.
7. Use of Internet- Search
Engines Disadvantages
Sometimes we didn’t find what we were
searching for so we ended up scrolling
through pages and wasting a lot of time as
our research was not specific enough.
While researching we were
not specific to our genre so
we found lots of irrelevant
results, which ultimately
wasted time.
New Media doesn’t have
the answers instantly –
little volume of information
can be a problem at times.
New media’s collaboration can
quickly get out of control – there is
so much material available you can
quickly become swamped.
8. Search Engines - Disadvantages
New media raises questions around ownership – who owns content?
What is ‘official’ content? Definitions are changing or at least being
debated thanks to new media.
A lot of content
found through
search engines can
be user-generated
which raises
questions about
the credibility of
resources.
9. Finding Music
When it came to finding music for our trailer, we
took inspiration from the music used in the trailer for
‘Suicide Squad’.
In order to recreate a piece like this, we had to record
our own version of a similar song. We chose the song
Amazing Grace is it juxtaposes the dark scenes
within the trailer. We felt this would give an eerie
feel to the trailer, as well as increasing the drama of
the overall trailer.
In order to record the song, we needed to use a flash
drive voice recorder which could then be transferred
directly to the computer.
10. Free Play Music and
YouTube Disadvantages
The trouble with using Free Play Music
was that there was almost ‘too much’
choice.
This meant that we wasted a lot of time
trying to figure out which soundtrack/s
would work best.
• As for YouTube, this was a useful
website, however a lot of the music
on YouTube is copyrighted.
• This meant we were very limited in
terms of what music we could
actually use!
12. Storyboard Presentation
We explained how our trailer would look
like through various post-it notes which
helped create a visual aid to help the
audience (and us) understand what shots
our trailer would consist of.
We separated our trailer into three
acts so the audience knew when to
feel different emotions throughout.
We found it much more
creative to draw pictures
rather than type up our
thoughts and ideas on
Blogger as from these
drawings we spawned new
ideas and new shots to
include.
New media is not always
needed – sometimes the old-
fashioned ways of doing
things are still the most
efficient and effective.
13. Animatic
Once old media had served
its purpose, we moved to
new media. We took photos
of each image in our
storyboard, uploaded it to
FCE and edited it as we
would video footage,
trimming to the right length
and adding audio, effects
and transitions. This helped
us work our timings and
filming needs.
15. Presenting Planning on
Blogger
This really demonstrates the sharing capacity of
new media and its global potential.
Shows us how
many views we
have had per
day, month
ands overall
time.
16. View other work
We are able to view other
peoples blogs so we can use
other groups for inspiration or
we can get them to comment
on our work to tell us what we
need to improve and it works
both ways.
Blogging is a very new media tool – collaborative, easily
shared, and allows for us to represent ourselves.
17. Combining Text and
Images
As we were able to use both images; videos
and texts we have produced a creative
variety of work in different formats.
Images along with text make its easier for audiences to
follow our work and progress, as they can see images
and videos of what we have done and read alongside it.
This is effective as most audiences don’t expect or want
to read large amounts of text as they have developed a
‘snacking’ behavior. By combining text and images this
has made it more appealing to audiences, as there is not
too much heavy content.
This sort of
technological
convergence is
associated with New
Media.
18. Work in Progress
We used Blogger to show our
progress over this course.
This was very handy as we were
able to not only look at our own
work, but also that of others in our
group.
Furthermore it allowed us to
comment on our groups progress as
a whole and as individuals.
Blogger has shown us how far we
have progressed as a group which
is helpful in giving us confidence as
well as directing us on a path which
we can continue to progress
Example of how collaborative creativity has progressed
through new media technology
19. Planned use of Social
Media
We planned on using new media such as social network sites as a way for
the
Audience to get in touch with the main actors and ask any questions they
had.
• It also would have been used as a form of communication between the
audience themselves. This way they could discuss what they thought of our
trailer, poster, magazine cover and film.
• This would have been valuable as having an outside opinion of our work
could have informed us of anything that may need tweaking or completely
changing. On top of this, it would have also meant that we could have
learnt from things we were doing wrong had they been pointed out. This
would be extremely valuable as future products we produced would be
better as we could learn from any mistakes we may have made.
20. Label Filter
New media allows you to represent yourself as an online
identity and choose how you appear to others.
Allows for easy
searching of work
between group
members.
Acts as a library for
our online identity, can
find all of our works
easily.
22. Manipulating Images
New media technology allows us all to be creative and
artistic, whatever our traditional artistic skills may be like.

23. Photoshop
23
New media has helped to create
new kinds of creativity.
Manovich calls it “creativity of
selection”.
Learning what the tools were
and how they could be used
was one of our key challenges.
We also needed to learn to
think and plan in layers, as all
editing packages work
roughly in this way.
24. Use of After Effects
This is a good example of the kind of ‘pre-packaged
creativity’ allowed by new media technology.
We added a blur over our fight scenes to make the scene look as if it is a
flashback as well as making it look like it all happened quickly.
We saturated some
shots to make it more
obvious that it is a
flashback.
We added fades to our
montage to blur the scene
and make it look as if the
character is reminiscing.
25. FCE - Combining Sound
and Image
An advantage to Final Cut Express was
that it was easy to import different files
such as JPEG, MP3 etc – this kind of
compatibility is associated with new
media technology.
When using music we
could use multiple
tracks to suit what was
going on in our trailer.
We could slow or speed
up the pace of trailer to
suit our ideas.
26. Balancing Sound
We were able to manipulate sound so that our use of dialogue
was louder than the use of non- diegetic music due to the
importance of dialogue in our trailer.
We were able to adjust this so that it was not noticeable, by
lowering the volume at the right times.
We were able to
layer diegetic and
non-diegetic sound,
add audio effects
and layer it to
achieve a more
textured trailer. This
shows the adjusting
of the montage
music to exactly
match the action.
27. Reversibility
This is one of the biggest advantages of new media over old
media – nothing is permanent and the source material remains
the same.
28. Combining Technologies
28
News report made from a combination of Photoshop and FCE.
This ability to combine different formats and editing packages is a
key one to allow our creativity to progress.
New media is convergent – you can use different elements of it
together. In fact, this is an expectation rather than an option.
29. Disadvantages of Digital
Technology
New media technology needs to be available to do
you any good.
• Not everything was straight
forward using this package.
• Not always particularly
collaborative - we could edit
different versions but as yet,
we do not have the technology
in school to edit the same
version at the same time. Not
all our tasks were finished to a
good standard, e.g. the
practice trailer, because we
ran out of time.
Most of us only had access to the
expensive digital cameras in
school. This meant that we could
not work at home, were unable to
catch up on photography in our
frees and were dependent on
booking out the cameras to carry
out extra work. This put pressure
on our time as we had limited
times when we could carry out
work.
30. Accessibility
New media is associated with accessibility and
democracy – not always the case. Developing technology
remains expensive for a while.
The package was accessible to everyone in our media
group at limited times - we only used it within school.
However it was only accessible to media students on the
Macs in our media classroom, there was no way of
getting it at home as it is expensive.
There was a similar problem with Photoshop
32. Comments Function on
Blog
This kind of outside
feedback is
probably the most
useful part of new
media technology
for us. New media
technology has
allowed this
collaborative
creativity.
This was good because we could
comment on each others work and
yell other people in the group how
they could improve.
Anyone from anywhere in the
world could have accessed our
blog and had written comments
on our blog.
They could have been seen
from any location or
hardware when pressing the
view function.
33. Label Filter
Label filter allows us to see who
has done what on the blog.
Examiners and teachers can see
what work has been done by
what student and this means
they can evaluate and examine
our coursework well.
We know how many posts we
have done and we can self-
evaluate our work.
Enabled us to both scrutinise and collect our own work but also to
look at the work of others quickly and efficiently.
34. Allows choice of format
- Slideshow
The sharing function makes it easy
for the whole group to work
separately but also together as we
placed a copy of the presentation
on Google docs so we could all edit
at the same time.
We have the opportunity to either
include a video in our
presentations, use simple text,
include images or all of them. This
format worked well for the
technology evaluation as it relied
on a lot of evidence from images,
which slideshows are particularly
good for.
Effective way of creating a
shared group presentation
that focussed mainly on the
visual. This was shared via
Google docs so we could all
work on it at the same time
so it is a collaborative piece
of work. The format
encourages brevity and
getting to the point –
important in a tsk that has
many elements and could
become very long if not
contained in this format.
35. Allows choice of format
- Edited Presentation
• Can combine images, text,
moving images etc
• Freedom of discussion was
needed as value of audience
feedback was debatable
• Ideas can be discussed
• Able to create a version that
can be fast-forwarded so the
whole video didn’t have to
be watched – annotations
and images give a fair
overview of discussion
content.
The spoken presentations allow
for group interaction and an
element of debate. We were also
able to be in role at times, and
part of new media is the
creation of new identities – we
were able to experiment with
some made-up identities here.
Annotating these presentations
using LiveType make them
more user friendly and also
deepen the evaluation as we
were conscious while
performing of the potential
annotations.
36. Allows choice of format –
Photo Montage
We have been able to
create several of these
images so that we can
evaluate our work as
individuals on
separate posts.
It gives us a clear
overview of what
we have achieved.
Useful format for creating
an initial visual
impression that can then
be analysed. Draws
attention to individual
parts of product rather
than getting sidetracked
by the whole.
37. Allows choice of format –
YouTube Tutorial
Here we explained the success
of our products in combination
by advising others how to
construct a similarly successful
campaign. We were able to
explain how our products
created a brand identity and to
essential ‘talk through’ all our
ideas with a lot of visual
evidence to back this up.
Another useful aspect of this
was being able to add in
references to the whole
imagined campaign – part of
the new identities of new
media!
Allowed us to integrate
images and spoken word
in an entertaining and
easy format. Replicated
an existing media form
and allowed for analysis
and evaluation in a more
light-hearted context.
