The hydrogen consumption in the Netherlands in 2020 amounted to 1,500 kton/year, which corresponds to 180 PJ/year (LHV).

EDUCATION LEVEL ON JOB TITLE
MAINTAINING A BETTER WORLD
The current outflow of VET (MBO) students does not meet the labor market demand and this is expected to
decrease further in the coming years. To meet the labor market demand, it is necessary to look beyond regular
education.
Developing special modules that go deeper into specific sub-aspects or equipment is essential. These modules can
then be offered as continuing education to the current workforce.

Vocational education and training (VET) prepares people for work and develops citizens' skills to remain employable and respond to the needs of the economy.

the hydrogen sector, 12 are Vocational
Education and Training (VET) positions
and only one of them applied University.

Currently, there is a high demand for VET (MBO)
positions in this sector and it is especially difficult
to fill positions.

  2. [Ferry] Now before we do that, a quick elaboration on who is ‘we’, so that you better understand from which source we’re talking / so that you can better understand our credentials. For those of you who don’t know Stork: Stork is a multi-national operations & maintenance services company that works across multiple industries. We’ve been in this business for over 150 years, starting with supporting energy transition in the 1800’s and now we’re fully supporting the next energy transition, by providing new technologies and cost competitive O&M services. On the other side we have often tens to hundreds of technicians doing O&M in existing facilities. This puts us in a great position to help clients decarbonize their assets as well. And as you’ll see in this presentation, that’s exactly what we’ve been doing.

  6. Operating hydrogen installations. Ensuring that others can work safely at a hydrogen installation. Roles during the construction of these installations. Performing inspection tasks. Performing maintenance. Broader knowledge required across multiple fields due to decentralized systems.
  7. Some bottlenecks emerged during the research and development of the elective, including the balance between generic and company-specific training in the hydrogen domain. Given the presence of 259 different organizations (Reijerkerk and Van Rhee 2019, 73) in approximately 272 functions with varying levels of knowledge in the hydrogen value chain, it is challenging to develop generic H2 training. There is a high likelihood that employment will leak to other regions or countries during the construction of the facilities.
  8. This study serves as input other projects around the development of hydrogen competencies, or are currently under development and will run for the next 3-8 years. The results of this study will be made available to the following users - research groups that will use it in programs like: CE Delft, in collaboration with SEO Economic Research, labor market research hydrogen transition commissioned by Groenvermogen NL; The European Hydrogen Skills Alliance, (Greenskills4H2); World Class Maintenance HYDRO-BOREAS program; Curriculum development for hydrogen and wind courses in Canada by Old Library Academy and CNA College of the North Atlantic.
  9. By early 2024, we've conducted sufficient research in the Netherlands to determine the educational material needed for each type of Hydrogen project. Current student supply from mainstream education doesn't meet the demand for hydrogen professionals. We need to educate lateral entrants and other groups. The vocational education (MBO) now has ministry-approved programs and can begin enrolling students. The transition to a hydrogen economy offers opportunities for job growth, but this requires investment in education and training at different levels. For optimal results, industry and education need to collaborate on programs and research.
