Media Evaluation By Steffan Harris
What the presentation is about. The presentation is all about how I have created my media product and how I have come to the final piece also how I have progressed from my preliminary task to my final piece.
Drafts The reason i have created drafts is because it is part of planning, i have created a range of drafts for each front cover, contents page and double page spread to be precise i have created five for each (If you wish to see these see my folder).
The reason I compared magazines The reason I compared magazines against each other was for the reason that I choose what best attracted me to those magazines.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why. Bauer media publish a wide arrange of magazines such as - The reason I believe that Bauer would be the most likely company to publish my media product as they already have previous experience in publishing music magazines before. Also they publish magazines such as “KEERANG” and “Q” so they would already know what would be expected of the media product.
Dennis – this publisher doesn’t publish music magazines but publishes magazines to do with either mechanics/cars and normal and everyday life. As you can see from above Dennis publication would not be a suitable company to produce my magazines as they do not at this current moment publish any music magazine’s.
Future publication – This publication is similar to Bauer but not as big as of a company but publishes magazines which are quite similar like “KERRANG” which i would say is similar to style as “Metal HAMMER” which is also a rock magazine. Classic Rock Classic Prog Computer Music Future Music Guitarist Guitar Techniques Metal Hammer Rhythm Total Guitar Guitar Aficionado Guitar World Guitar World Legends Revolver As you can see from above this publisher mainly publishes music magazine’s but also publishes game and computer magazine’s but this would also be a good company to publish my media product because they have history in publishing music magazines.
Who is my target audience The target audience for my media product is teenagers from the ages of 14 – 18 I think this is a suitable age group for the scene and music and the language which has been used in the article. Also the target audience would most likely be part of a group either named scene kids or part of the metalcore scene. Also a charatistic with this social group is they have tattoo’s or stretchers in there ears also they are part of the social class C1 and C2.
Represent particular social groups. shopping social Likes to chill Uses social networking sites Visits a wide a range of concerts
How did you attract/address your audience? The way in which I believe my magazine will capture the target audience’s eye is the colors I have used are bright and vibrant and stand out against the black background also the image shown on the front cover quite obviously stands out too. Also throughout the magazine I have kept with the main colours of yellow and black these colours I think show and depict the sort of audience I am attracting also for the age range I am addressing the language I have used is appropiate as most older generations do not understand certain things such as shuffle this is the title of my magazine and if I was to ask people what shuffle was or what I suggested they would know but the older generations might not.
How does your media product represent particular social groups? My media product depicts a social group other wise known as the metalcore scene this certain social group is shown as quite a violent group and I show this in the article on the double page spread and the use off language I have used within in the article. Also I do believe that the images I have used show that the band and the editor are serious and that they mean “business” and are here to stay. From the ages of 14 to 18 this product will be aimed at. Also as I have mentioned before the language I have used this is rather important as if I had used language such as the independent and the guardian newspaper they might not have understood most of it so toning the language down as if simple terms instead of more intellectual terms so this would make it appeal more to this particular social group.
As you can see from the picture on the right which I have took it closely represents the one on the left of the band alkaline trio but as you can also see I have tried to change it just a bit more so they are not the exact same by getting the models in my picture to cross all there arms and in the one left only the vocalist Matt Skiba has his arm’s crossed while the other two members Dan Adriano and Derek Grant do not have there arms crossed.
Front Cover Bright, large and unusual text stands out and captures the readers eye also stands out from the background of the magazine front cover. Cover line this is also in a bright large text and unusual which sort of goes with the cover line “KING AND EYE” i mean this by it is quite royal feeling with the word king. Image in bottom of the corner this shows there is other story’s inside the magazine which makes them want to read on and buy the magazine. Also the puff on the top right corner is to subdue the reader to buy the magazine as there is an exclusive story and this will make the reader want to read more. The cover image is a very dominant in the cover as the readers eyes will be drawn straight to it as you can see there is not a lot there but the image being so big makes it stand out more.
Double page spread I have used the same text as I did for the this is to show continuatively through out the magazine also I have used the same colour. Also I have used white text in the article this is to make it stand out from the plain black background also the colour is contrasting with the black. Image the image I have used is specific as it shows exactly who is the band and only shows their faces.
Contents The title “Contents” is in a yellow to make it stand out but keep in line with the rest of the magazine. Also from the page numbers and what the pages are I have alternated the colours from white to yellow being the white being numbers and the words being words. Also I have used a image of a class colleague this is to imitate the editor of the magazine so there is a face behind the words or little paragraph what ever you decide to call it. I also have used a image of one of the band a this is to indicate who the inside story is all about.
Codes and conventions.Front Cover The magazine which I have decided to base it on is well known magazine called “KERRANG” I have kept to there sort of house style or there specific codes and conventions. The main reason I have chose this magazine is that it closely defines the style and it attracts the sort of social group I am attempting to attract also the other magazine I have used to create my magazine is “NME” the reason I have chosen this magazine is that it covers certain aspects of the style I am doing also I like the whole look of the magazine down to the articles to the images they use. believe my media product does follow both of these two magazines house style such as my mast head is similar to both magazines. It is similar to “KERRANG” magazine because they use block capitals and a large font size but it is also similar to “NME” magazine by using bright and vibrant colors. It is similar because of the images I have used in my media product are similar to both of the magazines which are well known by a number of nations and millions of people. Their image chose seemed to influence me in the images I took. I mean this by they seem to take picture either from the knee up or from the waist up. (As seen below.) Also I believe that the layout of my media product is very similar to these two magazines as the masthead, the cover image and the cover line are in similar positions if not the same.
Codes and conventions.Contents. As before I have mainly used “KERRANG” to use as an outline and I have used the same aspect of the page numbers and with what is on that page as the colours are different in that magazine and mine. I also used these bright colours to attract the reader and keep them interested in the product. As the two magazines I have compared use bright colours to attract the audience I thought it would be a good idea to do also.
Codes and conventions.Double page spread. My double page spread challenges the codes and conventions of the magazine “KERRANG” by it’s layout but the language is similar the way in which the layout challenges the conventions of the magazine ”KERRANG” is the image used as you can see they put the image on one side then the text on the other on mine I have put the text across both pages and the image is on the one still.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?     While I have been creating my media product I have learnt and advanced on my skills using desktop publishers such as serif page plus and using image editing software such as Photoshop elements. In these two editing software’s I have learnt and improved my techniques using such tools as the lasso tool in Photoshop or the text settings in page plus.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? After I had created my preliminary task it seemed that I expected more out of it I mean that by I thought with the planning I had done it would have turned out better but going off that when we started this product I thought I would do more planning and make sure it is to the best possible attempt on a magazine. Planning which I had undertook to create my product, this is so that it would turn out better
