2. Application for the 2014/2015 Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the
Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) ended
in March 2014, over 1.6 million candidates selected
their preferred choice of course, with the expectation
that they have their admission hope met.
In past UTME, candidates can select two (2) courses
(first and second choice) from each Institution,
however for this UTME2014/2015 candidates are only
able to select a course from each University,
Polytechnics / Monotechnics, Colleges of Education,
Innovative Enterprise Institutions. In all, a candidate
selects 4 courses and can only be admitted in one.

5. University
According to the 2014/15 Joint Admission and Matriculation Board,
there are over 600 courses in Nigerian Universities. While some enjoy
great patronage by students, majority are embraced but for the
failure of being considered for admission for the preferred choice.

9. Most Sought-After Course – Medicine & Surgery
A total of 285,076 candidates applied for
courses in Faculty of Medicine; Medicine
& Surgery received 142,474 applications,
this is 50% of total applicants in this
Faculty. Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical
Laboratory Science, and Radiography
received 22.7%, 12.2%, 8.5% and 1.3% of
total applicants respectively.
Medicine & Surgery, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical
Laboratory Science, Radiography, Dentistry &

Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy, Optometry,
Medical Biochemistry, Human Nutrition &
Dietetics, Human Anatomy, Biochemistry,
Biomedical Technology, Pharmacology &
Therapeutics, Pharmacology, Medical
Radiography & Radiological Science, Nutrition &
Consumers Services, Veterinary Science.
This accounted for one of the reasons why there is low (less than
5%) admission rate for Medicine & Surgery. Even though it is the
most preferred choice among Science students, there are just 46
Universities (Federal -21, State -18, Private -7) where Medicine &
Surgery are listed. Ironically, the Health Index of Nigeria is at
extreme low (Global Competitive Index ranks Nigeria Health and
Primary Education 146 of 148 Countries) and Life Expectancy at
about 47years.

11. Institutions & Most Sought-After Courses
A total of 6 Universities emerged as candidates’ top destination
choice for sought-after courses
Four (4) of the these Universities are Federal while the remaining two
are State Universities
Of the Top 20 most sought-after course, UNILORIN got 11 spot as the
most preferred destination for candidates
Except UNN, none of the Big5 (UI, UNN, OAU, ABU, UNILAG)
universities appeared on the list of top sought-after courses
Two (2) State Universities, Benue State University & Imo State
University, are top destination choice for Business Management,
Sociology and Banking & Finance respectively
Electrical/Electronics Engineering in FUTO is the most sought-after
Engineering course
UNILORIN emerged as the top destination choice for candidates in
the following courses; Accounting, Business Administration,
Economics, Mass Communication, Political Science, Civil Engineering,
Computer Science, Medicine & Surgery, Microbiology, and
Biochemistry
12. UNIZIK & UNILORIN received
between 7.2 and N7.80Billion
in the 2014 Budget (proposed)
while the likes of the BIG5 are
between 9.67 and
N13.6Billion.
15. Trend of Most Sought-After Courses & DestinationUTME Applications 2011/12 – 2014/15
UNILORIN is the preferred destination for Accounting, Business
Administration, and Computer Science
FUTO is preferred for Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil Engineering
UNN is preferred for Nursing Science
UNIBEN is preferred for Law
UNIZIK is preferred for Medical Laboratory Science
BENSU is preferred for Sociology
Other courses like Medicine and Surgery, Economics, Pharmacy,
Political Science, Biochemistry, Banking & Finance, etc. could not be
specifically traced to individual institutions; for instance, a course like
Medicine & Surgery had no singular preferred destination as top
spot were shared among ABU, UNN, UNIBEN, and UNILORIN.
However, a wild guess would be to consider affiliate courses such as
Pharmacy, Nursing, Microbiology & Biochemistry; whichever of the
Institutions have them as preferred can be inferred to be a
destination choice.

32. GUIDANCE FOR PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATES
Like sought-after institutions; admission into sought-after courses is
also very competitive. By implication, it means graduates of such
courses will be in high supply.
In Economics; the higher the Supply of an item (in this case careers),
the lower the Price of the item (the lower the remuneration –
jobs/salary or services). While this is not to discourage people from
following their dreams, it is to let you know the implication of taking
after such courses/career without distinctive expertise.
If you are good at what you do, and can go some extra miles to
provide exceptional service, there is a very high probability that you
will be preferred among your equals. Excellence beats all forms of
competition. If you are excellent at your career, you will be sought-
after.
Excellence beats all forms of competition. If you are
excellent at your career, you will be sought-after
