The quality or state of being composed of
many elements or types
Culture
The way people live in a particular time and
place
WHAT IS CULTURE DIVERSITY?
 Cultural diversity is about accepting
and respecting people’s differences
and understanding that everyone is
unique.
 It is often used to mention the variety
of human societies or cultures in a
specific region, or in the world as a
whole. It refers to the inclusion of
different cultural perspectives in an
organization or society.
How does Cultural Diversity Affect
Communications?
Diversity can be a challenge or strategic force that influences communication.
What are the different types of diversity challenge? Procedural - Diversity can
often be a source of obstacle or differences as far as the process of
communication is concerned.
Cultural Differences - Diversity can result from the cultural differences
between people.
Linguistic - There are also linguistic differences that are prevalent.
Gender - Gender becomes one of the most important components related
to diversity.
How does Cultural Diversity Affect
Communications?
 Education - The quality and level of education should also be
considered when talking about diversity in people.
 Age - Age becomes an important factor in understanding the diverse
outlook in people.
 Non-verbal Cues - There are also non-verbal factors that result in
diversity between people
Cultural Diversity Trends
 The following point shows trends regarding how organizations try to
encourage cultural diversity
 The growth of the minority workforce:
 Significant increase of women in the labor force
 Companies embracing the addition of sensitivity training or multiplicity
training
 Increase in aging worker pool
 Increased transparency in goals
How can you support cultural
diversity?
 Increase your level of understanding about other cultures by interacting
with people outside of your own culture—meaningful relationships may
never develop simply due to a lack of understanding.
 Avoid imposing values on others that may conflict or be inconsistent with
cultures other than your own.
 When interacting with others who may not be proficient in English,
recognize that their limitations in English proficiency in no way reflects
their level of intellectual functioning.
 Recognize and understand that concepts within the helping profession,
such as family, gender roles, spirituality, and emotional well-being, vary
significantly among cultures and influence behavior.
 Within the workplace, educational setting, and/or clinical setting, advocate
for the use of materials that are representative of the various cultural groups
within the local community and the society in general.
 Intervene in an appropriate manner when you observe others engaging in
behaviors that show cultural insensitivity, bias, or prejudice.
 Be proactive in listening, accepting, and welcoming people and ideas that

Culturally Diverse Workplace
Four ways to communicate better in today’s diverse
workplace
 Use clear language When you are communicating with a culturally
diverse audience, keep your language clear, concise, and straightforward.
Avoid jargon, slang terms, euphemisms, and colloquial expressions. For
example, you could say, “That sales report was fantastic!” Instead of, “That
sales report was a slam dunk!”
Understand differences in body
language
You may be surprised to learn that different cultures have
very different practices when it comes to non-verbal forms
of communication. For instance, in most countries, people
don’t greet each other by shaking hands, and some
cultures find it disrespectful to engage in direct eye
contact. Additionally, some cultures have different comfort
levels when it comes to personal space and touching.
When in doubt, leave at least one arm’s length between
you and your colleagues, and keep your hands to yourself.
Practice reflective listening or
paraphrasing
When in conversation, paraphrasing or repeating the message back is a good
habit to get into. This will help clarify meaning and eliminate issues that may
surface as a result of a misunderstanding. The same is true for written
communication—paraphrase to clarify any doubts you may have.
Be open and inclusive of other cultures Although it’s natural to
gravitate towards others who share our preferences and traditions, getting to
know our fellow colleagues from culturally diverse backgrounds can help build
relations and open up your world to new experiences. Bear in mind that they may
be new to this country and have challenges of their own, as they try to navigate a
different language, customs, and way of life.
Conclusion:
Cultural diversity is a real phenomenon that is taking place in the hotel industry
and it is becoming important in creating competitive advantage in the
hospitality industry. The benefits of cultural diversity in the workplace include
increased innovation, increased customer attraction and increased talent pool
leading to the employment of the best talents. Managing people from different
backgrounds is not an easy task and thus requires the management to devise
strategies to make it effective. Cultural shock is usually caused by stress and
change in roles brought about by the new environment and it can be reduced by
trainings and personal interactions with the organization
