Endearment
in-deer-ment (noun)
Definition: A word or act expressing affection
Example: While my husband was serving in Afghanistan, I kept a letter
filled with endearmentsfrom him in my wallet.
Sentence: While I’m waiting at home, worried if he’ll ever come back, I
hear his words off endearments in my head which gives me hope, that
someday he will come back.
Impetuous
im-PETCH-oo-us (adjective)
Definition: Marked by impulsive vehemence or passion
Example: After graduating from university, Tom made the impetuous
decision to hitchhike across the country.
Sentence: In the book Divergent, the faction of Abnegation makes
impetuous decisions to help people around them without being told, because
they are the faction of selflessness.
Hamatria
hah-mahr-TEE-un (noun)
Definition: Tragicflaw (imperfection)
Example : Greed was the hamatria that ultimately brought down the
protagonist.
Sentence: I think one of my hamatria’s is hunger because when I am
hungry, I get lazy and weak and I don’t want to do anything.
Pique
peek (verb)
Definition: To arouse curiosity or interest
Example: Our curiosity was piqued by the locked chest hidden at the back of
the old ship.
2. Sentence: Books with interesting covers piques my interests but I personally
do not like book covers with pictures of people in it. In my opinion, it ruins
my imagination of how the characters look like.
Equality
i-kwa-le-tee
Definition: The quality or state of being equal (same ranks or status)
Example: It’s absurd to suggest that there was equality between all the
citizens in the United States in the early 1960’s.
Sentence: I don’t get why some people care about the race or color of other
people, that is not how people should be treated because the color of a
person is only on the outside. What is important is on the inside. People
should respect one another, because equality matters and it is important.
Freedom
fre-dem (noun)
Definition: Quality or state of being free – from slavery or restraint or from
the power of another. –
Example: 1. He thinks children these days have too much freedom.
2. Many political prisoners struggle to win their freedom.
Sentence: Freedom is a political right and there are no excuses, whether you
are a child, an adult, or a different race. Everyone deserves to be free and be
treated right. When I think about child labour and racism around the world,
it sickens me to know I live in a world full of people that act like this.
Feisty
FYE-stee (adjective)
Definition: Having or showing a lively aggressiveness; spunky.
Example: Elena found success as a stage actress thanks in part to her feisty
spirit and strong work ethnic.
Sentence: Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones was a really feisty woman
because she stood up for herself even though she could have gotten into a lot
of trouble.
3. Stratagem
STRAT-a-jum (noun)
Definition: A cleverly contrived trick or scheme for gaining an end
Example: As a stratagem to get the kids to do their chores, Mel persuaded
them to have a race to see which child could finish first.
Sentence: As a stratagem to help me study for a big test, I make study cards
then, when I’m done testing myself for a little while, I do something else
like read. After awhile I go back to it and test myself again to see what I
don’t remember.
Rupee
ROO-pee (noun)
Definition: A coin and monetary unit used in countries such as India, Nepal,
Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
Example: Six months after I returned from India, I found a lonely rupee
wedged in the lining of my purse.
Sentence: When Lucy went to Nepal and wanted to buy a bite to eat, she
paid them 10 Canadian dollars, but they didn’t accept it. Then she realized
that in Nepal their money were rupees and not dollars.
Epiloge
e-pe-log (noun)
Definition: 1. A concluding section that rounds outs a literary work.
2. A speech given at the end of a play to the evidence by an actor.
Example: The actor in the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet, delivered the
epilogue to the audience.
Sentence: Some people think that the epilogue of Mockingjay was boring
and that it was missing a lot of details. But in my opinion, I thought it was
perfect and the Suzzane Collins did a fantastic job leaving just enough
mystery. Although, sometimes I wonder if Gale ever replaced Katniss or got
over her.
