This document provides guidance for analyzing a music video or short film to understand aspects of genre, narrative, representation, audience, and mise-en-scene. Students should discuss how a social group is represented with examples, analyze the story structure, and discuss the style and feel created through mise-en-scene and genre. Analyzing different videos allows students to apply what they learn to their own projects.

Key concepts video analysis
1. Key Concepts Video Analysis
Analyse a music video or short film within your chosen genre. Find something that
will be really good in helping you format your own project. Concentrate on aspect of
genre, narrative, representation, audience and mise-en-scene. Use sign and symbols
(denotations) to pull out meaning (connotations) within the video. This is a lot like
what we did in the TV Drama unit.
• Discuss how a certain social group is being represented and give examples as
to how you know this; this would be a great place to talk about audience as
well.
• Discuss the story structure (Thesis, antithesis, synthesis).
• Discuss the style and the feel that was created, this is a great place to bring in
mise-en-scene and genre.
*It is best if each of your group members chooses a different video as you can all use
this found knowledge in your research and planning.*
