• mLearn2go
LETS GO!
Learning Ecology through Science with
        Global Outcomes (LETS GO)
• The aim of the project is to design challenging
collaborative IBSL activities supported by mobile and
    sensor technologies.

• Central notion that led the design and technical
development in the LETS GO project have been
    “mobile science collaboratories”.

• In the scope of our project, “Mobile science
collaboratories” has been defined as a set of mobile
devices, open software tools, and resources, with online
    participation frameworks for supporting learners’
    collaboration and inquiry
Initial Efforts (spring 2009)
• Science sensors and mobile devices
    for data capture and mapping

• Geo-visualization for data-analysis

• Pen-based paper computing

• Learning activity – Soil Quality
Learning Activity (winter 2010)
• Twelve students (16-17 years of age) – two hours per session - 5 weeks

• The field of investigation was related to water quality
Current efforts
• Exploring the benefits of open standard ini4a4ves
• XForms standçard for next‐genera4on data collec4on and
  interchange (JavaRosa pla?orm )
• OpenDataKit (ODK) ‐ Open‐source and standards‐based tools
   – ODK Collect ‐ built on the Android pla?orm
   – Renders Xforms
   – ODK Aggregate – server side data aggrega4on
• Various types of inputs:
   – Text
   – GPS
   – Video/Audio/Image
   – Barcodes.
   – digital pens
Future Efforts
• Extending our system:
• full utilization of the visualization
  component
• web-based visual authoring tool
• Learning Management System
Linked Data Approach
Challenge
• We are currently exploring to what extent
Linked Data can help to improve the
  semantic interoperability of ELO metadata.
The idea
• A graph illustration of an exemplary RDF
  statement:

The above statement facilitates data linkage
  via HTTP:
Pinetree
• Pinetree is a content repository
    implemented as a Linked Data
    application

• Digital content are organised
    according to the Pinetree core
    ontology

• Core technologies used in the
    implementation are Sesame and
    Restlet
Illustrative Scenario
Insights
• Linked Data contributes with
• Expressivity
• Flexibility
• Data distribution

GeM & AMULETS
GeM
• Part of ongoing project cycle of 5 projects
  of the last 4 years
  • Forrest Studies for Primary School
  • City Square History for Primary School
  • Biology for Teacher Students
  • GeM Geometry Mobile for Middle
    School
Quick View
GeM Research Aims
• To explore how 1:1 and 1:M technologies
can support novel learning for mathematics
including mobile, 3D tools, and Mixed
  Reality Visualizations
• Explore how the concept of software
ecosystems can be applied to mobile
  learning
• Flexible and Multiple roles for mobile
  devices
GeM in Action
Design Process
• Design-based Research with a strong co-
  design process
• Challenges in balancing the team of
  researchers and students
• Goal of producing educational innovations
  while providing empirical research
Software Ecosystems
Tested in GeM
• The implementation of
    the concepts and their
    relation was succesfull
and utilized in the trial on
    the server side.

• The notion of SECO was
    largely unadressed in this
    implementation however.
    This is where my future
    work will lie.
Flexibility in Mobile Devices
• Bring the concept of multiple roles in mobile devices.
      • Client role
      • Service Provider role
      • Context Externder role
      • Etc.
• Be able to provide the suitable role in the mobile device for each
situation, according to the environment information provided by
    the context.
• Extend the potential related to flexibility in the LAS, wherein the
    mobile device is involved.
• Allow direct collaboration between mobiles by the use of service
    provider roles.
Flexibility in Mobile Devices
        • Extends the roles a mobile device can have: client, service
provider, context extender, resource extender, etc.

        • GeM provides a context-extender role (the GPS position).

        • Technology: Flexible Activity Client

               • Server-based roles are provided by a Web Server (MWS
[8]) running on the mobile device, and accessible
                    through the Internet

               • The server composed of Apache, PHP, Python and
                    MySQL.

               • Services are provided as Web Services using RESTful
                    methods

        • The mobile device can offer device located services and
content, even its own sensored context.

        • In GeM, a mobile device could request external GPS locations to
acquire multiple points (form multiple devices) and calculate
            distances
Future Work
• Needed to expand the roles a mobile device can perform.

• Study for the reasoning to select the role in action. Dynamism in the
activation and deactivation of roles may be required.

• Web Server & Services activation based on the context.

• Study for the collaboration of several multiple-role mobile devices for
the creation of complex services in the aggregation of mobile devices.

• Introduction of Virtual Mobile Devices. Composition of mobile devices
    working as a unity.
