3. Definition of Switching
A network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple
computers together within one local area network.
Technically ,network switches operate at layer two(data link layer)
of the OSI model.

4. Switching : Types
The different nodes for switching based on performance can be categorized
into following types:

5. Switching : Advantages
• Increase the available bandwidth of the network.
• Help in reducing workload on individual host PCs.
• Increase the performance of the network.
• Reduce frame collisions due to create of collision domains for each
connection.
• Connect directly to workstations.

6. Switching : Disadvantage
• Significantly more expensive than bridges,
• Network connectivity problems can be difficult to trace.
• Broadcast traffic facing trouble.

7. Circuit Switching
• Circuit switched network consists of a set of switches connected by
physical links.
• Two nodes communicate with each other over a dedicated
communication path.
• Once a connection is established, a dedicated path exists between both
ends until the connection is terminated.
• After all data has been transferred, the circuit is close down.

8. Packet Switching
• Messages are divided into packets of fixed or variable size.
• Each switching node has a small amount of buffer space to hold packets
temporarily.
• If the outgoing line is busy, the packet stays in queue until the line
becomes available .

9. Packet Switching : Types
There are two types of packet switching:
I. Datagram Packet Switching
II. Virtual Packet Switching

10. Datagram Switching
• It is normally implemented in the network layer .
• Each packet is routed independently through the network .
• Each packet contains a header which has the full information about the
destination.

11. Virtual Packet Switching
• It is normally done at the data link layer .
• It establishes a fixed path between a source and a destination to transfer the
packets .
• It is also called as Connection Oriented Network.

12. Message Switching
No dedicated path between transmitter and receiver.
Each message is routed independently through the network.
Each message contains a header which has the full information about the
destination.
