Un Sitio Donde Ellos Viven, Como Ellos Viven: LGBT Latinos & the Social Justice Sexuality Project
1. Eastern Sociological Society Meeting February 24, 2012 Carlos M. Camacho, CUNY-Graduate Center Alexis Espinoza, Hunter College “ Un Sitio Donde Ellos Viven, Como Ellos Viven: LGBT Latinos & the Social Justice Sexuality Project”
First, special thanks to…organizers of Creating Change… our funders, Arcus….
Our study - For the Latino population, “La Familia” is an important social structure. Following, we see religion, such as Virgen Guadalupe as a symbol of latino. Portraying the latino community as religious, in particular “catholic”. Therefore we want to know how this affects outness among LGBT latinas/os. Let us not forget that currently there is a debate on Defense of the Marriage Act, which uses religion as a basis. Driving our interest to looking at religion and its effect on outness on LGBT latinos, especially since they are portrayed as religious. http://www.flickr.com/photos/diego-fg/4609958934/ Rene de Calle 13 http://www.flickr.com/photos/justoutpdx/5727292753/ M Necklace http://www.flickr.com/photos/nathaninsandiego/5944794302/in/photostream/ USN http://www.flickr.com/photos/justoutpdx/5978958468/in/set-72157627287849682 dancing duo http://www.flickr.com/photos/justoutpdx/5727343951/in/set-72157626612469033/ crowd shot
Since we are using the same data, we will not reiterate what our colleague very eloquently covered. The gathering - 2009 - 1) researching, raising money, 2) piloted. This is how we did it - online, venue based events, partners. Goal was to get people who would not necessarily go to gay pride, but may be a gay rodeo or senior event or religious event. Started with N=5,500 -> 4963 due to respondent fatigue [didn’t finish], lack of integrity [in response - not taking survey seriously] Online - 18% Paper - 82% http://www.flickr.com/photos/justoutpdx/5727339221/in/photostream 3 guys taking survey
We will go on to remind you that the data was gathered from all 50 states The survey reach: All 50 states Image from here: http://geology.com/state-map/maps/usa-map.jpg
Including PUERTO RICO! The survey reach: All 50 states + Puerto RIco Image from here: http://www.globalworkstravel.com/graphics/Puerto_Rico_cgt_map.jpg
Once again, the origional sample was 5500 In contrast, the SJS study has a total sample size of 5,500 (down to 4,963). It covers a range of 5 groups - diverse in terms of racial/ethnic group, age, gender, relationship status, sexual orientation & gender ID, and 5 broad topic areas. We used a purposive sample, ideal for a study of this kind where random sampling would systematically exclude people of color and disproportionately include white people.

As mentioned at the beginning our purpose is to see wha predicts outness. We are focusing on the effect that family support has and religion. We will of course look at demographic variables as well. Q11a: The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey conducted in 2007 shows that, in America, nearly 6 in 10 adults say they pray at least once a day. But frequency of prayer varies by religious tradition, age, gender and income. About 7 in 10(69%) Hispanics pray every day. 57% (N=2026) of Americans (age 18+) say that one must believe in God to be moral ( Pew Global, 2007 ). http://www.flickr.com/photos/paullew/6773848012/sizes/z/in/photostream/
Q11b: The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey ( Pew Forum, 2008 ), asks "How important is religion in your life" with the given options of "very important, somewhat important, not too important, or not at all important." According to the Pew's report " Religion Among the Millennials " (2010): U.S. Youth (age 18-29): 45% saw religion as "very important" (N=4,242) U.S. Older Adult (age 50-64): 59% saw religion as "very important" (N=10,484) U.S. Older Adult (65+): 69% saw religion as "very important" (N=8,146)
Notes (Q11C): The American National Election Study question asks; " Aside from attending services, in the PAST SIX MONTHS have you been an active member at your place of worship -- I mean, have you done things like serve on committees, give time for special projects, or help organize meetings?" The choices for response are yes and no.
