I am passionate about kanban because without a lot of ceremony and time, I can get a team to self organize and communicating at a whole new level. Since constraints become visible, it allows people to be more willing to go out of their comfort zone and thus wear any hat that it takes to produce quality software. Seeing constraints, pulling value and eliminating waste is the goal of practicing kanban. This would be a "kanban explained" session for those who are not familiar with this practice. I use physical boards to illustrate the concepts and encourage good dialogue. We will discuss several types of kanban boards such as WIP, backlog and retrospectives. This presentation has been tested at many user group meetings, at clients and conferences such as Agile 2009 & CodeMash 2010. The session takes 1 hour to present, 1 1/2 hours to have good dialogue during the presentation. Kanban, while not a new concept, nor complex - it is often misunderstood by those who don't practice it. Intended audience is for people that understand agile story wall concepts and whole team. The best audience is a Scrum master who will learn how kanban can take their craft to the next level of a self organizing teams by seeing, not hearing about constraints.

Abstract The purpose of this dissertation is to find out whether sustainability can introduce lean to companies in situations other than a crisis. The project also looks at how lean, as a proven management system, can support sustainability in becoming economically more attractive. This dissertation starts with an extensive literature review, first about lean, followed by sustainability. It looks at: definitions, reasons why, how to, and barriers. Then a combined literature review focuses on: the communalities, potential conflicts, and how lean and sustainability can support one another. Each chapter concludes with a conceptual framework where findings are summed. The research approach is both deductive (literature review to develop a theoretical position) and inductive (data collection and analysis). The main research design is an exploratory study based on comparative case studies. For this both a Lean Change Agent and an Environment, Health & Safety Manager were interviewed at three multinationals. The findings show that lean is mainly used for its practical guidance, by using its tools and techniques, while also helping to make the broad concept of sustainability more tangible. However, without adopting lean’s long-term philosophic base, its utilisation remains superficial and is less likely to have a long lasting impact. Sustainability hardly provides any other incentives for lean than financial ones. Although an extra constancy of purpose is not offered by sustainability, the emerging economic urgency may create a useful tide for lean. As such this dissertation still provides enough arguments for both lean and sustainability implementers to stand stronger together facing mutual issues.

A3 reports are known as a way to capture problem-solving activities following the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle and also to focus problem-solvers’ thinking, helping them understand the problem deeply and uncover hidden root causes leading to effective countermeasures. This session demonstrates the potential of A3 Thinking as an evolutionary improvement method in organizations that can complement existing process and improvement methodologies, such as Agile, Kanban or ITIL. The session contains a story of a “data centre crisis” in a software company, when multiple departments, each using different processes and improvement methods, came to work together to learn deeply about their common problem, address its root causes, drastically reduce the downtime and lock in lasting improvements. The story is used to reinforce several key aspects of A3 Thinking, to demonstrate its evolutionary nature, and to explore its relations to organizational complexity. The story also has a number of stopping points, highlighting several key coaching behaviours important to Lean/Kanban change agents, including: the non-judgmental attitude, avoiding resistance to change, working with the existing culture, validated learning, and the ability to lead improvements with safe-to-fail experimentation.

An extended version of the session at the Sydney Scrum User Group, Agile Brisbane, Melbourne Agile and Scrum User Group and Agile Newcastle between Feb 26 and Mar 20, 2013. This included a promo about the Scrum Australia 2013 conference: http://www.scrum.com.au Session Intro In an effort to become Agile and/or Lean, many organisations in Australia are attempting to design their own custom Agile process from Agile and Lean principles at the time at which they are least qualified to do so - before they have started. This might appear to make sense if you set out to 'implement the Agile Methodology' * or 'do Agile' *. After all, aren't you acting in the adaptable spirit of Agile to pick and choose which practices you adopt and how you implement them? Every organisation is unique, right? In reality, organisations taking this approach, tend to pick the easy 'low hanging fruit' that are easy for them to adopt over those that offer the most improvement over the status quo. In pulling up stumps early and 'wimping out' of the harder organisational changes, such organisations unconsciously stifle their teams' ability to reach for high performance and limit the organisation's ability to go beyond "good" to be truly "great". They may also be missing the essential understanding that Agile practices were designed to work as an inter-dependent system of disciplined practice. As Kent Beck put it: "No single practice works well by itself, each needs the other practices to keep them in balance. If you follow 80% of the process you get 20% of the benefits." If, however, you set out to be a high performing organisation, this may not be adequate. So... What if there was a way to avoid a half-baked 'Agile-ish' approach producing half-baked outcomes? What if you could get there by "standing on the shoulders of giants"? What if there were a simple formula for becoming truly Agile? (Genuinely living the Agile Software Development values and principles.) What if this simple formula also implicitly implemented the core principles of Lean and did so in a way based not on repetitive Lean Manufacturing of physical objects but on a type of Lean that is much more appropriate for complex knowledge work and systems development? What if this formula also implemented the management/leadership approaches suggested for a Complex problem domain as per the Cynefin framework? What if this formula enabled rapid cycles of learning about both:- what the customer really needs and- what techniques are required to rise to the challenge of delivering it using contemporary technologies? What if this formula was proven to scale and could support you through the Agile Journey from pilot to whole-organisation transformation? What if this formula was self-correcting in terms of both your project outcome and your processes themselves? What if there was a way to unlock the full synergistic potential of teams and realise truly high performance?

Hierarchy organization structures have been with us since the 1800's. It is clear they maintain command and control from the leadership running these types of organizations. Although because of hanging on to this command and control management style they are also slow. It is time to start changing these structures and this presentation describes an organizational structure type that has proven to work.

From the book Planning Extreme Programming by Kent Beck and Martin Fowler: Customer Bill of Rights: * You have the right to an overall plan, to know what can be accomplished, when, and at what cost. * You have the right to get the most possible value out of every programming week. * You have the right to see progress in a running system, proven to work by passing repeatable tests that you specify. * You have the right to change your mind, to substitute functionality, and to change priorities without paying exorbitant costs. * You have the right to be informed of schedule changes, in time to choose how to reduce scope to restore the original date. You can cancel at any time and be left with a useful working system reflecting investment to date. Programmer Bill of Rights: * You have the right to know what is needed, with clear declarations of priority. * You have the right to produce quality work at all times. * You have the right to ask for and receive help from peers, superiors, and customers. * You have the right to make, and update your own estimates. * You have the right to accept your responsibilities instead of having them assigned to you.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
