1. With Love (Luke 6:27-29,35-36) [Moffatt]
27 But I say to you who are listening now to Me: [in order to heed, make it a
practice to] love your enemies, treat well (do good to, act nobly toward) those
who detest you and pursue you with hatred, 28 Invoke blessings upon and pray
for the happiness of those who curse you, implore God‘s blessing (favor) upon
those who abuse you [who revile, reproach, disparage, and high-handedly
misuse you]. 29 To the one who strikes you on the jaw or cheek, offer the other
jaw or cheek also; and from him who takes away your outer garment, do not
withhold your undergarment as well. 30 Give away to everyone who begs of you [who is in want of
necessities], and of him who takes away from you your goods, do not demand or require them back again. 31 And as you would like
and desire that men would do to you, do exactly so to them. 32 If you [merely] love those who love you, what quality of credit and
thanks is that to you? For even the [very] sinners love their lovers (those who love them). 33 And if you are kind and good and do
favors to and benefit those who are kind and good and do favors to and benefit you, what quality of credit and thanks is that to you?
For even the preeminently sinful do the same. 34 And if you lend money at interest to those from whom you hope to receive, what
quality of credit and thanks is that to you? Even notorious sinners lend money at interest to sinners, so as to recover as much again.
35 But love your enemies and be kind and do good [doing favors so that
someone derives benefit from them] and lend, expecting and hoping for nothing
in return but considering nothing as lost and despairing of no one; and then
your recompense (your reward) will be great (rich, strong, intense, and
abundant), and you will be sons of the Most High, for He is kind and
charitable and good to the ungrateful and the selfish and wicked. 36 So be
merciful (sympathetic, tender, responsive, and compassionate) even as your
Father is [all these].
2. Accept them! (Luke 4:35-37) [Moffatt]
35 But Jesus checked it, saying, "Be quiet, come out of him." And after
throwing him down before them, the demon did come out of him, without doing
him any harm.
36 Then amazement came over them all; they talked it over among themselves,

saying, "What does this mean? He orders the unclean spirits with authority and
power, and they come out !"
37 And a report of him spread over all the surrounding country.

:35 ―Shut up!‖ Jesus had the power to cast out the demon – even to
condemn the man who had let It in, if He wanted that!
God NOW desires Mercy, not judgment (John 3:17). His Way is WIDE open to
Salvation! He died on the cross for ALL!
 What did it show about Jesus‘ power, that the demon left the man unharmed?
 Is God‘s power shown more in saving a badly corrupted life, than an already
  ‗righteous‘ one?
God doesn‘t pass over any who want His mercy (who repent to Him!).
BUT often those robbed more by Satan (the thief) are very much more willing to
acknowledge the truth of their sin, and seek God‘s rule (Matt. 21:31)
If we just stay in our pews, never leave our boats & fellows who are already in
‗good shape‘ – then we are not giving God His opportunity to Save others!
3. If People Seem Unattractive.. Accept Them(Luke 5:12;13-16)[Moffatt]
12 When he was in one of their towns, there was a man full of leprosy who, on
seeing Jesus, fell on his face and besought him, "If you only choose, sir, you
can cleanse me."
13 So he stretched his hand out and touched him, with the words, "I do choose,

be cleansed." And the leprosy at once left him.
14 Jesus ordered him not to say a word to anybody, but to "Go off and show

yourself to the priest, and offer whatever Moses prescribed for your cleansing,
to notify men.― 15 But the news of him spread abroad more and more; large
crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their complaints,
16 while he kept in lonely places and prayed.

 :12-14 Did this man, covered by a horrible disease, deserve Jesus‘ healing?
 BUT what was his attitude? Did he believe God could heal Him thru Jesus?
 :13 Why did Luke consider Jesus‘ touching him significant? (Heb.4:15)
God‘s nature - HE LOVES & has compassion for us, and wants us to embrace
Him in that. Our faith (trust) in action is an example for others to follow Him, too
 :15 Why did Jesus command the man to wait before telling, until he made
an offering for purification? What similar thing would Jesus want us to do
   today?
 :16 How important was it that Jesus prayed, instead of just ‗steamrolling‘?
(Backups)
3. If People Seem Unattractive . . . Accept Them (Luke 5:12; 13-16)
• 5:1-11 The disciples‘ nets
12 While He was in one of the towns, there came a man full of (covered with)

leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and implored Him, saying,
―Lord, if You are willing, You are able to cure me and make me clean.‖
13 And [Jesus] reached out His hand and touched him, saying, ―I am willing;

be cleansed!” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And [Jesus] charged
him to tell no one [that he might chance to meet], until [He said] ―you go and
show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your purification, as Moses
commanded, for a testimony and proof to the people, that they may have
evidence [of your healing].‖ 15 But so much the more the news spread abroad
concerning Him, and great crowds kept coming together to hear [Him] and to be
healed by Him of their infirmities. 16 But He Himself withdrew [in retirement] to
the wilderness (desert) and prayed.
:12-14 Why is it that some people get God‘s answer, while others don‘t? How
did this man address Christ?
:13 Why did Luke consider Jesus‘ touching him significant? (Heb.4:15)
:15 Why did Jesus command the man to wait before telling, until he made an
offering for purification? What similar thing does Jesus want us to do today?
What ‗better effect‘ does such an offering have? Is it similar to baptism?
:16 Why did Jesus pray, instead of just continuing to do more works?
The Last Words of Christ: GO, tell everyone! (Mark 16:12–20)
12 After this, He appeared in a different form to two of them as they were
walking [along the way] into the country. 13 And they returned [to Jerusalem]
and told the others, but they did not believe them either. 14 Afterward He
appeared to the Eleven [apostles themselves] as they reclined at table; and He
reproved and reproached them for their unbelief (their lack of faith) and their
hardness of heart, because they had refused to believe those who had seen
Him and looked at Him attentively after He had risen [from death]. 15 And He
said to them, ―Go into all the world and preach and publish openly the good
news to every creature. 16 He who believes [who adheres to and trusts in and
relies on the Gospel and Him Whom it sets forth] and is baptized will be saved
[from the penalty of eternal death]; but he who does not believe [who does not
adhere to and trust in and rely on the Gospel and Him Whom it sets forth] will
be condemned. 17 And these attesting signs will accompany those who believe:
in My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages; 18
They will pick up serpents; and [even] if they drink anything deadly, it will not
hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well.‖
19 So then the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken to them, was taken up into

heaven and He sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and
preached everywhere, while the Lord kept working with them and confirming
the message by the attesting signs and miracles that closely accompanied [it].
Amen (so be it).
The Last Words of Christ: GO, tell everyone! (Romans 8:10-14)
• 8 …The word is close to you, in your very mouth and in your heart (that is,
the word of faith which we preach). 9 Confess with your mouth that 'Jesus is
Lord‘, believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, and you will
be saved; 10 for with his heart man believes and is justified, with his mouth
    he confesses and is saved.
• 11 No one who believes in him, the scripture says, will ever be

disappointed. 12 No one - for there is no distinction of Jew and Greek, the
same Lord is Lord of them all, with ample [generosity] for all who invoke him.
13 Everyone who invokes the name of the Lord shall be saved.

• 14 But how are they to invoke One in whom they do not believe? And how

are they to believe in One of whom they have never heard? And how are
they ever to hear, without a preacher?
• :5-7 Don‘t pick out people for salvation (as if thru their merits). Instead,
recognize that God, with His grace, seeks ALL men.
• :8 Acts 17:24-31 (esp. 27) says that God is close to us, in Him we
exist. Also John 16:8 says the Spirit will convict of sin.
• :9-10 Salvation is simple: Trust & obey (become Christ‘s ally)
• Luke 11:23, Matt. 12:30 – You‘ll scatter souls, if not gathering with Him
• :11-13 Your past is irrelevant. ―♫ Come just as you are… ♫‖
Jesus Fulfills… Promises, Prophecies (God speaks)
A fast breaks our will, humbles us before God
Luke 4: 1-12 Jesus is tempted during 40 days fast:
… to serve himself by spending God‘s power on cheap stuff
His Answer (___) : We are to obey all of God‘s words (intents), not just our
‗bellies‘
… to worship Satan, and get a kickback as Satan‘s servant
We are to worship & obey God only
… to thwart God‘s sacrifice (Himself), by letting God‘s promises ‗rescue‘ Him
Don‘t put God to the test of breaking His will for you
NOTE: Jesus always had THE Answer
… it was ALWAYS from God‘s Words (from the very 1st temptation)!
Resist Satan (evil) and temptation will flee from you (Ja. __)
13 And when the devil had ended every [the complete cycle of] temptation, he
[temporarily] left Him [that is, stood off from Him] until another more opportune
and favorable time.
Breaking (submission) precedes God‘s power
14 Then Jesus went back full of and under the power of the [Holy] Spirit into
Galilee, and the fame of Him spread through the whole region round about.
God‘s Power precedes productivity, and possibly perfect praise
15 And He Himself conducted [a course of] teaching in their synagogues, being
recognized and honored and praised by all.
(From Last week)
16 So He came to Nazareth, [that Nazareth] where He had been brought
up, and He entered the synagogue, as was His custom on the Sabbath day.
And He stood up to read. 17 And there was handed to Him [the roll of] the book
of the prophet Isaiah. He opened (unrolled) the book and found the place where
it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me, because He has anointed
Me [the Anointed One, the Messiah] to preach the good news (the Gospel) to
the poor; He has sent Me to announce release to the captives and recovery of
sight to the blind, to send forth as delivered those who are oppressed [who are
downtrodden, bruised, crushed, and broken down by calamity], 19 To proclaim
the accepted and acceptable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the
free favors of God profusely abound.] 20 Then He rolled up the book and gave it
back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were
gazing [attentively] at Him. 21 And He began to speak to them: Today this
Scripture has been fulfilled while you are present and hearing.
Prelude: Where did Jesus go?
Jesus was Sent to people that walked in darkness: From Matthew 4:
13 And leaving Nazareth, He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the

country of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 That what was spoken by the prophet
Isaiah might be brought to pass:
15 The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, in the way to the sea,

beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles [of the peoples who are not of
Israel]— 16 The people who sat (dwelt enveloped) in darkness have seen a
great Light, and for those who sat in the land and shadow of death Light has
     dawned.
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, crying out, Repent (change your mind

for the better, heartily amend your ways, with abhorrence of your past sins), for
the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

The inhabitants of the region of Galilee were represented as walking in
darkness, because they were far from the capital, from the temple; they had few
religious privileges; were intermingled with the pagans, and were comparatively
rude and uncultivated in their manners and in their language.
Allusion to this is several times made in the New Testament; John 1:46 : 'Can
any good thing come out of Nazareth?' John 7:52 : 'Search and look, for out of
Galilee ariseth no prophet;' Matthew 26:69; Mark 14:70. – Barnes Notes
Jesuis Fulfills… Promises, Prophecies (God speaks)
Luke 4:18-10 quotes from Isaiah 61
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed and
qualified me to preach the Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor, and
afflicted; He has sent me to bind up and heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim
liberty to the [physical and spiritual] captives and the opening of the prison and
of the eyes to those who are bound, [Rom. 10:15.]
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord [the year of His favor]

and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, [Matt. 11:2–6;
Luke 4:18, 19; 7:22.]
3 To grant [consolation and joy] to those who mourn in Zion—to give them an
ornament (a garland or diadem) of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy
instead of mourning, the garment [expressive] of praise instead of a
heavy, burdened, and failing spirit—that they may be called oaks of
righteousness [lofty, strong, and magnificent, distinguished for
uprightness, justice, and right standing with God], the planting of the Lord, that
He may be glorified.
4 And they shall rebuild the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former
desolations and renew the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.
5 Aliens shall stand [ready] and feed your flocks,…

Jesus unimpeachably knew His role to fulfill at this time. He left off the italicized
1. If People Seem Annoying . . . (Luke 4:31-34)
31 And He descended to Capernaum, a town of Galilee, and there He continued
to teach the people on the Sabbath days. 32 And they were amazed at His
teaching, for His word was with authority and ability and weight and power. 33
Now in the synagogue there was a man who was possessed by the foul spirit of
a demon; and he cried out with a loud (deep, terrible) cry, 34 ―Ah, let us alone!
What have You to do with us [What have we in common], Jesus of Nazareth?
Have You come to destroy us? I know Who You are—the Holy One of God!‖

Jesus was fully prepared in His teaching to be Lord over dark powers
(unsurprised). Often, we are not that bold!
Why are Christians opposed, when standing for God? Is this people, or
spiritual powers? (Eph. 6:12, James 3:16)
The root is: envy. (Ja. 3:16)
Challenges to authority! WHO is ruling? This is ―people‘s‖ issue.
Luke 23:34 People are walking in darkness.
2. Accept them! (Luke 4:35-37)
35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ―Be silent (muzzled, gagged), and come out
of him!‖ And when the demon had thrown the man down in their midst, he
came out of him without injuring him in any possible way. 36 And they were all
amazed and said to one another, ―What kind of talk is this? For with authority
and power He commands the foul spirits and they come out!‖ 37 And a rumor
about Him spread into every place in the surrounding country.
38Then He arose and left the synagogue and went into Simon‘s (Peter‘s) house.
Now Simon‘s mother-in-law was suffering in the grip of a burning fever, and they
pleaded with Him for her.
Do not distinguish people’s needs for Christ. Tell ALL!
There are only 2 classes of people: saved and unsaved! No one does good of
their own natural self – all are headed to judgment! (Romans 3:10, Matt. 19:17)
From Jude: 18 …In the last days (end time) there will be scoffers, following
their own ungodly passions – [agitators] setting up distinctions and causing
divisions — merely sensual, devoid of the Spirit and destitute of any higher
spiritual life.
20 But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith,

praying in the Holy Spirit; 21 Guard and keep yourselves in the love of God;
expect and patiently wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto life
eternal.
22 And refute [so as to] convict some who dispute with you, and on some have

mercy who waver and doubt. 23 [Strive to] save others, snatching [them] out of
[the] fire; on others take pity [but] with fear, loathing even the garment spotted
by the flesh and polluted by their sensuality.

There are 2 camps; those who are in Christ, and those not so. Do not wait, but
(with God‘s help) seek ALL people to bring them into His Camp! (2 Tim. 4:2)
Be instant with the Word & wisdom Christ gives you, passing on His words to all
men.
The Last Earthly Words of Christ: GO, tell ALL! (Romans 8:10-14)

• Deuteronomy 30:11–14 (AMP)
• 11 For this commandment which I command you this day is not too difficult
for you, nor is it far off. 12 It is not [a secret laid up] in heaven, that you
should say, Who shall go up for us to heaven and bring it to us, that we may
hear and do it? 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, Who
shall go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear and do it? 14
But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your mind and in your
heart, so that you can do it.

  • 5. 1. With Love (Luke 6:27-29,35-36) [Moffatt] 27 But I say to you who are listening now to Me: [in order to heed, make it a practice to] love your enemies, treat well (do good to, act nobly toward) those who detest you and pursue you with hatred, 28 Invoke blessings upon and pray for the happiness of those who curse you, implore God‘s blessing (favor) upon those who abuse you [who revile, reproach, disparage, and high-handedly misuse you]. 29 To the one who strikes you on the jaw or cheek, offer the other jaw or cheek also; and from him who takes away your outer garment, do not withhold your undergarment as well. 30 Give away to everyone who begs of you [who is in want of necessities], and of him who takes away from you your goods, do not demand or require them back again. 31 And as you would like and desire that men would do to you, do exactly so to them. 32 If you [merely] love those who love you, what quality of credit and thanks is that to you? For even the [very] sinners love their lovers (those who love them). 33 And if you are kind and good and do favors to and benefit those who are kind and good and do favors to and benefit you, what quality of credit and thanks is that to you? For even the preeminently sinful do the same. 34 And if you lend money at interest to those from whom you hope to receive, what quality of credit and thanks is that to you? Even notorious sinners lend money at interest to sinners, so as to recover as much again. 35 But love your enemies and be kind and do good [doing favors so that someone derives benefit from them] and lend, expecting and hoping for nothing in return but considering nothing as lost and despairing of no one; and then your recompense (your reward) will be great (rich, strong, intense, and abundant), and you will be sons of the Most High, for He is kind and charitable and good to the ungrateful and the selfish and wicked. 36 So be merciful (sympathetic, tender, responsive, and compassionate) even as your Father is [all these].
  • 6. 2. Accept them! (Luke 4:35-37) [Moffatt] 35 But Jesus checked it, saying, "Be quiet, come out of him." And after throwing him down before them, the demon did come out of him, without doing him any harm. 36 Then amazement came over them all; they talked it over among themselves, saying, "What does this mean? He orders the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out !" 37 And a report of him spread over all the surrounding country. :35 ―Shut up!‖ Jesus had the power to cast out the demon – even to condemn the man who had let It in, if He wanted that! God NOW desires Mercy, not judgment (John 3:17). His Way is WIDE open to Salvation! He died on the cross for ALL!  What did it show about Jesus‘ power, that the demon left the man unharmed?  Is God‘s power shown more in saving a badly corrupted life, than an already ‗righteous‘ one? God doesn‘t pass over any who want His mercy (who repent to Him!). BUT often those robbed more by Satan (the thief) are very much more willing to acknowledge the truth of their sin, and seek God‘s rule (Matt. 21:31) If we just stay in our pews, never leave our boats & fellows who are already in ‗good shape‘ – then we are not giving God His opportunity to Save others!

Accept Them(Luke 5:12;13-16)[Moffatt] 12 When he was in one of their towns, there was a man full of leprosy who, on seeing Jesus, fell on his face and besought him, "If you only choose, sir, you can cleanse me." 13 So he stretched his hand out and touched him, with the words, "I do choose, be cleansed." And the leprosy at once left him. 14 Jesus ordered him not to say a word to anybody, but to "Go off and show yourself to the priest, and offer whatever Moses prescribed for your cleansing, to notify men.― 15 But the news of him spread abroad more and more; large crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their complaints, 16 while he kept in lonely places and prayed.  :12-14 Did this man, covered by a horrible disease, deserve Jesus‘ healing?  BUT what was his attitude? Did he believe God could heal Him thru Jesus?  :13 Why did Luke consider Jesus‘ touching him significant? (Heb.4:15) God‘s nature - HE LOVES & has compassion for us, and wants us to embrace Him in that. Our faith (trust) in action is an example for others to follow Him, too  :15 Why did Jesus command the man to wait before telling, until he made an offering for purification? What similar thing would Jesus want us to do today?  :16 How important was it that Jesus prayed, instead of just ‗steamrolling‘?

  • 10. 3. If People Seem Unattractive . . . Accept Them (Luke 5:12; 13-16) • 5:1-11 The disciples‘ nets 12 While He was in one of the towns, there came a man full of (covered with) leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, ―Lord, if You are willing, You are able to cure me and make me clean.‖ 13 And [Jesus] reached out His hand and touched him, saying, ―I am willing; be cleansed!” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And [Jesus] charged him to tell no one [that he might chance to meet], until [He said] ―you go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your purification, as Moses commanded, for a testimony and proof to the people, that they may have evidence [of your healing].‖ 15 But so much the more the news spread abroad concerning Him, and great crowds kept coming together to hear [Him] and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. 16 But He Himself withdrew [in retirement] to the wilderness (desert) and prayed. :12-14 Why is it that some people get God‘s answer, while others don‘t? How did this man address Christ? :13 Why did Luke consider Jesus‘ touching him significant? (Heb.4:15) :15 Why did Jesus command the man to wait before telling, until he made an offering for purification? What similar thing does Jesus want us to do today? What ‗better effect‘ does such an offering have? Is it similar to baptism? :16 Why did Jesus pray, instead of just continuing to do more works?
  • 11. The Last Words of Christ: GO, tell everyone! (Mark 16:12–20) 12 After this, He appeared in a different form to two of them as they were walking [along the way] into the country. 13 And they returned [to Jerusalem] and told the others, but they did not believe them either. 14 Afterward He appeared to the Eleven [apostles themselves] as they reclined at table; and He reproved and reproached them for their unbelief (their lack of faith) and their hardness of heart, because they had refused to believe those who had seen Him and looked at Him attentively after He had risen [from death]. 15 And He said to them, ―Go into all the world and preach and publish openly the good news to every creature. 16 He who believes [who adheres to and trusts in and relies on the Gospel and Him Whom it sets forth] and is baptized will be saved [from the penalty of eternal death]; but he who does not believe [who does not adhere to and trust in and rely on the Gospel and Him Whom it sets forth] will be condemned. 17 And these attesting signs will accompany those who believe: in My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages; 18 They will pick up serpents; and [even] if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well.‖ 19 So then the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and He sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord kept working with them and confirming the message by the attesting signs and miracles that closely accompanied [it]. Amen (so be it).
  • 12. The Last Words of Christ: GO, tell everyone! (Romans 8:10-14) • 8 …The word is close to you, in your very mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach). 9 Confess with your mouth that 'Jesus is Lord‘, believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, and you will be saved; 10 for with his heart man believes and is justified, with his mouth he confesses and is saved. • 11 No one who believes in him, the scripture says, will ever be disappointed. 12 No one - for there is no distinction of Jew and Greek, the same Lord is Lord of them all, with ample [generosity] for all who invoke him. 13 Everyone who invokes the name of the Lord shall be saved. • 14 But how are they to invoke One in whom they do not believe? And how are they to believe in One of whom they have never heard? And how are they ever to hear, without a preacher? • :5-7 Don‘t pick out people for salvation (as if thru their merits). Instead, recognize that God, with His grace, seeks ALL men. • :8 Acts 17:24-31 (esp. 27) says that God is close to us, in Him we exist. Also John 16:8 says the Spirit will convict of sin. • :9-10 Salvation is simple: Trust & obey (become Christ‘s ally) • Luke 11:23, Matt. 12:30 – You‘ll scatter souls, if not gathering with Him • :11-13 Your past is irrelevant. ―♫ Come just as you are… ♫‖

Jesus Fulfills… Promises, Prophecies (God speaks) A fast breaks our will, humbles us before God Luke 4: 1-12 Jesus is tempted during 40 days fast: … to serve himself by spending God‘s power on cheap stuff His Answer (___) : We are to obey all of God‘s words (intents), not just our ‗bellies‘ … to worship Satan, and get a kickback as Satan‘s servant We are to worship & obey God only … to thwart God‘s sacrifice (Himself), by letting God‘s promises ‗rescue‘ Him Don‘t put God to the test of breaking His will for you NOTE: Jesus always had THE Answer … it was ALWAYS from God‘s Words (from the very 1st temptation)! Resist Satan (evil) and temptation will flee from you (Ja. __) 13 And when the devil had ended every [the complete cycle of] temptation, he [temporarily] left Him [that is, stood off from Him] until another more opportune and favorable time. Breaking (submission) precedes God‘s power 14 Then Jesus went back full of and under the power of the [Holy] Spirit into Galilee, and the fame of Him spread through the whole region round about. God‘s Power precedes productivity, and possibly perfect praise 15 And He Himself conducted [a course of] teaching in their synagogues, being recognized and honored and praised by all.
  • 14. (From Last week) 16 So He came to Nazareth, [that Nazareth] where He had been brought up, and He entered the synagogue, as was His custom on the Sabbath day. And He stood up to read. 17 And there was handed to Him [the roll of] the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened (unrolled) the book and found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me, because He has anointed Me [the Anointed One, the Messiah] to preach the good news (the Gospel) to the poor; He has sent Me to announce release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth as delivered those who are oppressed [who are downtrodden, bruised, crushed, and broken down by calamity], 19 To proclaim the accepted and acceptable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the free favors of God profusely abound.] 20 Then He rolled up the book and gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were gazing [attentively] at Him. 21 And He began to speak to them: Today this Scripture has been fulfilled while you are present and hearing.
  • 15. Prelude: Where did Jesus go? Jesus was Sent to people that walked in darkness: From Matthew 4: 13 And leaving Nazareth, He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the country of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 That what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be brought to pass: 15 The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, in the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles [of the peoples who are not of Israel]— 16 The people who sat (dwelt enveloped) in darkness have seen a great Light, and for those who sat in the land and shadow of death Light has dawned. 17 From that time Jesus began to preach, crying out, Repent (change your mind for the better, heartily amend your ways, with abhorrence of your past sins), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. The inhabitants of the region of Galilee were represented as walking in darkness, because they were far from the capital, from the temple; they had few religious privileges; were intermingled with the pagans, and were comparatively rude and uncultivated in their manners and in their language. Allusion to this is several times made in the New Testament; John 1:46 : 'Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?' John 7:52 : 'Search and look, for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet;' Matthew 26:69; Mark 14:70. – Barnes Notes
  • 16. Jesuis Fulfills… Promises, Prophecies (God speaks) Luke 4:18-10 quotes from Isaiah 61 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed and qualified me to preach the Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor, and afflicted; He has sent me to bind up and heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the [physical and spiritual] captives and the opening of the prison and of the eyes to those who are bound, [Rom. 10:15.] To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord [the year of His favor] and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, [Matt. 11:2–6; Luke 4:18, 19; 7:22.] 3 To grant [consolation and joy] to those who mourn in Zion—to give them an ornament (a garland or diadem) of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, the garment [expressive] of praise instead of a heavy, burdened, and failing spirit—that they may be called oaks of righteousness [lofty, strong, and magnificent, distinguished for uprightness, justice, and right standing with God], the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified. 4 And they shall rebuild the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former desolations and renew the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. 5 Aliens shall stand [ready] and feed your flocks,… Jesus unimpeachably knew His role to fulfill at this time. • 17. 1. If People Seem Annoying . . . (Luke 4:31-34) 31 And He descended to Capernaum, a town of Galilee, and there He continued to teach the people on the Sabbath days. 32 And they were amazed at His teaching, for His word was with authority and ability and weight and power. 33 Now in the synagogue there was a man who was possessed by the foul spirit of a demon; and he cried out with a loud (deep, terrible) cry, 34 ―Ah, let us alone! What have You to do with us [What have we in common], Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know Who You are—the Holy One of God!‖ Jesus was fully prepared in His teaching to be Lord over dark powers (unsurprised). Often, we are not that bold! Why are Christians opposed, when standing for God? Is this people, or spiritual powers? (Eph. 6:12, James 3:16) The root is: envy. (Ja. 3:16) Challenges to authority! WHO is ruling? This is ―people‘s‖ issue. Luke 23:34 People are walking in darkness.
  • 18. 2. Accept them! (Luke 4:35-37) 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ―Be silent (muzzled, gagged), and come out of him!‖ And when the demon had thrown the man down in their midst, he came out of him without injuring him in any possible way. 36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, ―What kind of talk is this? For with authority and power He commands the foul spirits and they come out!‖ 37 And a rumor about Him spread into every place in the surrounding country. 38Then He arose and left the synagogue and went into Simon‘s (Peter‘s) house. Now Simon‘s mother-in-law was suffering in the grip of a burning fever, and they pleaded with Him for her.
  • 19. Do not distinguish people’s needs for Christ. Tell ALL! There are only 2 classes of people: saved and unsaved! No one does good of their own natural self – all are headed to judgment! (Romans 3:10, Matt. 19:17) From Jude: 18 …In the last days (end time) there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions – [agitators] setting up distinctions and causing divisions — merely sensual, devoid of the Spirit and destitute of any higher spiritual life. 20 But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit; 21 Guard and keep yourselves in the love of God; expect and patiently wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto life eternal. 22 And refute [so as to] convict some who dispute with you, and on some have mercy who waver and doubt. 23 [Strive to] save others, snatching [them] out of [the] fire; on others take pity [but] with fear, loathing even the garment spotted by the flesh and polluted by their sensuality. There are 2 camps; those who are in Christ, and those not so. Do not wait, but (with God‘s help) seek ALL people to bring them into His Camp! (2 Tim. 4:2) Be instant with the Word & wisdom Christ gives you, passing on His words to all men.
