motivations: prevent knowledge loss I don’t want someone to re-do everything I did two years from now… maybe this information will give them a running start. So often things we work on are presented and then they just fade away. This is a place where we can archive our information for others to use. I wanted it to fill the giant hole we've been missing with all our projects, learnings, and money spent that currently either leaves with people or disperses into the air.
motivations: improve professional communication skills I looked around at the other pages to get ideas for what to say and how to organize it. It gives some good practice in professional writing as well.

transactive memory 16/27 group members have created user profiles Contact information, headshot, past projects 3 have created very detailed user profiles + patents, hobbies, biography, areas of expertise, work interests “ I am thinking about using the wiki as my personal portfolio collector… all of my accomplishments, etc” 2 interviewees have browsed profiles to learn more about others’ involvement with past projects
sharing beyond the group Users prefer wiki for sharing beyond group: they do not have to send others large files or setup special permissions on SharePoint. Idea of others discovering / browsing to their content was motivating… even before it happened. “ I am looking forward to the day when I get a phone call from a random person saying they found something interesting on the wiki and want to know more about it. ”

anyone can edit I’ve been a bit taken aback with the changes that are made to the organization of my content. I’m still not sure how I feel about [editing someone else’s content]. I don’t believe people should edit other peoples’ work. If you have a  comment, write a comment. Don’t edit someone else’s work. I guess I feel that it is their content and didn’t want to mess with it. I have verbally made recommendations on their content.
roles and permissions, briefly No clear roles emerged in the content creation. Offline, some group members seen as experts to ask how to do something. One user wanted a wiki moderator - but couldn’t say what that role would entail. Originally intended to implement (read) access control - later decided overhead of managing, deciding if a page should be visible enterprise-wide was not worth the effort.

  • 13. motivations: prevent knowledge loss I don’t want someone to re-do everything I did two years from now… maybe this information will give them a running start. So often things we work on are presented and then they just fade away. This is a place where we can archive our information for others to use. I wanted it to fill the giant hole we've been missing with all our projects, learnings, and money spent that currently either leaves with people or disperses into the air.

Idea of others discovering / browsing to their content was motivating… even before it happened. “ I am looking forward to the day when I get a phone call from a random person saying they found something interesting on the wiki and want to know more about it. ”

  • 21. anyone can edit I’ve been a bit taken aback with the changes that are made to the organization of my content. I’m still not sure how I feel about [editing someone else’s content]. I don’t believe people should edit other peoples’ work. If you have a comment, write a comment. Don’t edit someone else’s work. I guess I feel that it is their content and didn’t want to mess with it. I have verbally made recommendations on their content.
  • 22. roles and permissions, briefly No clear roles emerged in the content creation. Offline, some group members seen as experts to ask how to do something. One user wanted a wiki moderator - but couldn’t say what that role would entail. Originally intended to implement (read) access control - later decided overhead of managing, deciding if a page should be visible enterprise-wide was not worth the effort.
