INDUSTRY SPEAKERS
ExhIBITORS
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of SES, I would like to welcome you all to SMi Group’s 16th annual
Global MilSatCom conference & exhibition.
As a long term member and lead sponsor, SES is happy to be part of this
prominent military satellite communication conference and exhibition. I am
also particularly proud to have been Chairman of this event for the past 11
years and have seen it grow into an industry stalwart over the years.
Due to the global financial and economic constraints, reducing
expenditure is a primary concern for many Governments around the world.
To manage the reduction in defence budget and at the same time
maximising their information supremacy is the challenge that is being faced
by many Governments in planning their respective defence budgets.
Our strategy, therefore as industry professionals, is to rise to this challenge
and continue to develop innovative technologies, from software to
satellites and thereby increase the attractiveness and usefulness of our
products and services.
This conference is an ideal platform to hear about these ideas in a
knowledge-sharing environment involving decision makers, Government
representatives, military and other leading international industry
professionals.
Please join in the question and answer sessions, network with industry peers
and learn about new breakthroughs in this defence arena. But most of all,
enjoy yourselves at this premier annual event in London.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Yours sincerely,
Gerard Donelan

PRE-CONfERENCE WORKShOPS I 3RD NOVEMBER 2014 I PARK PLAZA RIVERBANK hOTEL I LONDON, UK
A: Role of Satellites in Operational Situational
Awareness – Latest Technological Trends
Hosted by Vladimir Stoiljkovic, Business Development Manager, Satellite Applications Catapult
Workshop Overview
Satellite technology (e.g., earth observation and satellite AIS) is
used as a situational awareness tool due to its global coverage
and ability to monitor large geographical areas, primarily in
cases of natural disasters (e.g., floods and earthquakes). The
more widespread use is hampered by high costs of
manufacturing and launching satellites as well as infrequent
data updates. The workshop will look at the latest
technological developments which will considerably reduce
the capital and operational costs and increase the data
delivery frequency.
Who Should Attend?
The workshop is aimed at personnel involved in use and
delivery of operational situational awareness tools. Delegates
will get broad understanding of the latest technological trends
and benefits they will bring to end-users.

B: Satellite Interference – Technology & Tools
Hosted by Martin Coleman, Executive Director, Satellite IRG
Workshop Overview
Satellite services are widely used by the commercial sector and
the military. Reliance on detecting minute signals in a fog of radio
frequency “noise” interference, either unintended or deliberate, is
a concern to maintaining assured and reliable communications
links to all. This Masterclass describes the technology and tools
used to mitigate interference through commercial sector initiatives
and explore how interference is managed and reduced.
Presenters from the IRG, SAT Corporation and Newtec will look at
the challenges posed by this important issue, identify current and
potential solutions, describe what is being done within the satellite
community to ensure that robust satellite communications can be
sustained as services rapidly expand.

About your Workshop Leader
Martin Coleman: from starting Colem, a services, design and
project management consultancy in 1992 and using his previous
experience in network management systems he developed
satellite & broadcast control system products for Corporate,
SNG/Flyaway and Wireless Cameras including enhanced
Automation, Intelligent Device Configuration and Media
management. Martin works with numerous broadcasters and
satellite operators to improve their operational processes and
control. In addition, Martin has been an active player in helping
reduce interference and as Executive Director of the Satellite
Interference Reduction Group (IRG) has evolved a global ETSI/DVB
Carrier ID (CID) specification for all SCPC/MCPC transmissions
(Video & Data) as well as the original NIT CID issued by WBU-ISOG
in 2008. He is committed to seeing Carrier ID being rolled out from
1st January 2015. In addition, his group has been heavily involved
with the ITU and major broadcasters in dealing with Intentional
Interference and this has led IRG to initiate new standards and
processes within the Geolocation industry. IRG supports major
groups such as APSCC, CASBAA, GVF, SMi, SSPi and WTA in getting

  • 3. Dear Colleagues, On behalf of SES, I would like to welcome you all to SMi Group’s 16th annual Global MilSatCom conference & exhibition. As a long term member and lead sponsor, SES is happy to be part of this prominent military satellite communication conference and exhibition. I am also particularly proud to have been Chairman of this event for the past 11 years and have seen it grow into an industry stalwart over the years. Due to the global financial and economic constraints, reducing expenditure is a primary concern for many Governments around the world. To manage the reduction in defence budget and at the same time maximising their information supremacy is the challenge that is being faced by many Governments in planning their respective defence budgets. Our strategy, therefore as industry professionals, is to rise to this challenge and continue to develop innovative technologies, from software to satellites and thereby increase the attractiveness and usefulness of our products and services. This conference is an ideal platform to hear about these ideas in a knowledge-sharing environment involving decision makers, Government representatives, military and other leading international industry professionals. Please join in the question and answer sessions, network with industry peers and learn about new breakthroughs in this defence arena. But most of all, enjoy yourselves at this premier annual event in London. I look forward to seeing you there. Yours sincerely, Gerard Donelan Vice-President Governments and Institutions, SES

PRE-CONfERENCE WORKShOPS I 3RD NOVEMBER 2014 I PARK PLAZA RIVERBANK hOTEL I LONDON, UK A: Role of Satellites in Operational Situational Awareness – Latest Technological Trends Hosted by Vladimir Stoiljkovic, Business Development Manager, Satellite Applications Catapult Workshop Overview Satellite technology (e.g., earth observation and satellite AIS) is used as a situational awareness tool due to its global coverage and ability to monitor large geographical areas, primarily in cases of natural disasters (e.g., floods and earthquakes). The more widespread use is hampered by high costs of manufacturing and launching satellites as well as infrequent data updates. The workshop will look at the latest technological developments which will considerably reduce the capital and operational costs and increase the data delivery frequency. Who Should Attend? The workshop is aimed at personnel involved in use and delivery of operational situational awareness tools. Delegates will get broad understanding of the latest technological trends and benefits they will bring to end-users. 8.30 Welcome coffee and registration 9.00 Current status – overview of market and technology trends 9.30 Latest technological advances in: • Nano and Micro Satellites • Small Satellites • Payloads (instruments) for small satellites 10.00 Operations and ground stations • Inter-satellite communications 10.30 Morning Coffee 11.00 Platforms and applications • Tracking people and assets 11.30 Role of SatCom in delivering OSA capabilities to the theatre – integrated SatCom terminals 12.00 Close of Workshop About your Workshop Leader Vladimir Stoiljkovic is a Business Development Manager at Satellite Applications Catapult. Company Profile Satellite Applications Catapult Ltd is one of a network of UK technology and innovation companies, developed by the Technology Strategy Board, which aims to drive economic growth through the commercialisation of research. Our vision is to support UK industry through the acceleration of the growth of satellite applications and to contribute to capturing a 10% share of the global space market predicted by 2030. This will more than quadruple the current UK space-related economy and create around 100,000 new high-tech jobs across the country. www.sa.catapult.org.uk 8.30-12.00 B: Satellite Interference – Technology & Tools Hosted by Martin Coleman, Executive Director, Satellite IRG Workshop Overview Satellite services are widely used by the commercial sector and the military. Reliance on detecting minute signals in a fog of radio frequency “noise” interference, either unintended or deliberate, is a concern to maintaining assured and reliable communications links to all. This Masterclass describes the technology and tools used to mitigate interference through commercial sector initiatives and explore how interference is managed and reduced. Presenters from the IRG, SAT Corporation and Newtec will look at the challenges posed by this important issue, identify current and potential solutions, describe what is being done within the satellite community to ensure that robust satellite communications can be sustained as services rapidly expand. Martin works with numerous broadcasters and satellite operators to improve their operational processes and control. In addition, Martin has been an active player in helping reduce interference and as Executive Director of the Satellite Interference Reduction Group (IRG) has evolved a global ETSI/DVB Carrier ID (CID) specification for all SCPC/MCPC transmissions (Video & Data) as well as the original NIT CID issued by WBU-ISOG in 2008. He is committed to seeing Carrier ID being rolled out from 1st January 2015. In addition, his group has been heavily involved with the ITU and major broadcasters in dealing with Intentional Interference and this has led IRG to initiate new standards and processes within the Geolocation industry. IRG supports major groups such as APSCC, CASBAA, GVF, SMi, SSPi and WTA in getting all interference initiatives advanced. Prior to setting up Colem, Martin was an engineer in charge of various BT satellite projects for Madley & Goonhilly earth stations in the UK. His background is both satellite and international telecommunications. Company Profile The Satellite Interference Reduction Group (IRG) is a leading organization working to reduce satellite frequency interference. It comprises three main working groups, covering Carrier ID, Intentional Interference, and VSAT.
