HALF-DAY PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP
TUESDAY 11TH MARCH 2014
MARRIOTT WEST LOOP HOTEL, HOUSTON, TEXAS, USA

Gas-To-Liquids Opportunities
Opening Up in North America
Presented by Alex Forbes, Director, Forbes
Communications Limited
1.30pm – 5.00pm

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:

North America’s shale gas revolution has created one
of today’s most promising commodity arbitrage
opportunities: monetising cheap-to-produce natural
gas at prices linked to those of costly crude oil. The key
enabler is gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology, a means of
converting methane molecules into premium liquid
hydrocarbons – such as diesel and kerosene – that can
form the basis of “drop-in” fuels in transportation. Unlike
other technologies that open up the gas/oil arbitrage
opportunity – such as LNG – GTL products can be used
in existing fuelling infrastructure and engines, with no
modifications required. Adding to GTL’s appeal is the
possibility of producing specialty products such as
chemical feedstocks and high-value waxes. As the GTL
spotlight shifts from the Middle East to North America,
this workshop will look at the opportunities and the
challenges involved in implementing GTL projects and
marketing their output.

  • 4. HALF-DAY PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP TUESDAY 11TH MARCH 2014 MARRIOTT WEST LOOP HOTEL, HOUSTON, TEXAS, USA Gas-To-Liquids Opportunities Opening Up in North America Presented by Alex Forbes, Director, Forbes Communications Limited 1.30pm – 5.00pm WORKSHOP OVERVIEW: North America’s shale gas revolution has created one of today’s most promising commodity arbitrage opportunities: monetising cheap-to-produce natural gas at prices linked to those of costly crude oil. The key enabler is gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology, a means of converting methane molecules into premium liquid hydrocarbons – such as diesel and kerosene – that can form the basis of “drop-in” fuels in transportation. Unlike other technologies that open up the gas/oil arbitrage opportunity – such as LNG – GTL products can be used in existing fuelling infrastructure and engines, with no modifications required. Adding to GTL’s appeal is the possibility of producing specialty products such as chemical feedstocks and high-value waxes. As the GTL spotlight shifts from the Middle East to North America, this workshop will look at the opportunities and the challenges involved in implementing GTL projects and marketing their output. AGENDA: 1:30 2:00 2:40 3:20 3:50 4.20 5.00 Registration & Coffee Industry overview – A technology whose time has come • Why the GTL spotlight has shifted to North America • Why GTL? A comparison with other gas monetisation options • Overcoming the technical challenges • Existing and future projects Technology Insights • Converting methane into long-chain hydrocarbons • The GTL product slate • Emerging technologies – at large and small scales • Why intellectual property matters Afternoon Tea Exploring GTL economics • Case studies • Gas/oil price divergence – is it sustainable? • The economics of developing future GTL projects: credible scenarios • Implications of unconventional gas – and oil Marketing GTL products • Key markets – transportation and chemicals • Demonstration projects • Maximising GTL revenue streams • Policy and regulation Discussion & Questions - a review of the session ABOUT YOUR WORKSHOP LEADER: Alex Forbes, Director, Forbes Communications Limited Independent energy journalist and consultant Alex Forbes has been reporting on energy developments and analysing trends for more than three decades. His expertise covers the whole gamut of energy – including oil, natural gas, electricity, policy, regulation, climate change and the geopolitics of energy supply security. His specialisms include unconventional fossil fuels, liquefied natural gas (LNG), gas-to-liquids (GTL), nuclear power and renewables. Alex travels frequently to attend, speak at and chair energy conferences, to conduct interviews with ministers and executives, to carry out consultancy assignments, and to visit major energy installations. Alex also takes on training assignments and conducts workshops and executive briefings.
