  4. It’s harder to get onto the 30 Under 30 list than it is to get into Stanford Business School, with an about 3% acceptance rate. More than 100 reporters trawl their fields for young game changers. When I was told I was being recommended by a former 30 Under 30 winner, I literally laughed out loud. After the press came in, I suddenly started feeling incredibly paranoid that I was only picked because they needed someone from the Midwest, or they needed a Hispanic girl, or that they needed someone from a corporate company. SO I GOT HELLA STRESSED, Y’ALL.
  5. I was feeling VERY Chris Trager at this point. I doubted myself, hard. I felt like a fraud. And that’s when I realized I had Imposter Syndrome.
  6. So what IS Imposter Syndrome? Well, Wikipedia says it best.
  7. After realizing I was a walking poster child for Imposter Syndrome, I did what anyone having an anxious breakdown would do. I wrote about it on the internet. But it was the comments that moved me. It isn’t only me that struggles with Imposter Syndrome. In fact, I’ve been faced with a variety of Imposter Syndrome situations my entire life, but this one was just harder to fake it over. I noticed a ton of other people in my field, and even other Forbes 30 Under 30 honorees were experiencing the same thing I feel. And I vowed to consistently try to never feel that way again. What I noticed is that my brain is consistently telling me to doubt myself. Instead, I’ve set up a few methods I’m excited to share with you guys, so that you can train your brain to ignore that doubt, too.
  8. The best thing to learn in this industry, and in life in general, is that everyone is faking it. “Faking it” can mean different things. It can mean you talk yourself out of doubting yourself (like I do), or that you make yourself feel more confident and amplify yourself when you’re feeling super down. It means when you get that hard interview question that you don’t immediately cower. (Trust me, we’ve all gotten them!)
  9. So how the heck are you supposed to fake it ‘til you make it? How are we HONESTLY supposed to battle Imposter Syndrome?
  10. NONE of you are mediocre. But it’s all in how you tell your story.
  11. “Am I the only person talking myself out of this?” – dogs don’t talk themselves out of anything. If they can see it, they can do it.
  12. First you jump, then you land – you can’t land somewhere amazing unless you jump. When I was asked to interview at Hallmark, I thought I had zero chance of working at a brand I really, truly have admired my entire life. But instead, I just jumped, and landed right here. You get exactly zero of the jobs you don’t apply for. So just jump and do it.
  13. If you have multiple dogs like me, you’ll also know they believe in a team (they are pack animals after all). Trust your pack – I constantly gut check with my teammates and my best friends to see if what I’m doing is right for my career and if they have advice for mine.
  14. Dogs don’t wake up and think, “Dang, that was so embarrassing when I didn’t catch that frisbee flying at my face!!” One of the things that holds a lot of people back is the potential for embarrassment. And let’s face it, we’ll all be embarrassed at some point in a professional setting. If we let each embarrassment follow us through even just the week, we don’t learn anything – all we do is carry around the stress.
  15. One of the easiest ways to believe in yourself is to hear it from people you know and trust. One of my favorite things to do is write LinkedIn recommendations for people I work with or have worked with in the past. When you build up other people, it’s good karma for you. The best part is the feedback you get won’t be fake at all – it will be genuine kind content that you can remind yourself of on hard days – and it will remind potential employers of your value from people who know you directly. Be the influencer you want to follow – I follow a lot of influencers who post gorgeous marble backgrounds with curated $100 beauty products, and I love that. I kept seeing this Diptyque candle get shared and it was like $80, and I thought I HAD to have it. So when I finally found the candle I was sooooo stoked to smell it! The scent was TERRIBLE. But it reminded me – do I want to be a person who posts these gorgeous images with no substance, or do I want to be an influencer who shares a gorgeous image and then tells you that the candle is just pretty and does not smell good at all? You learn a lot about authenticity to yourself and your own personal brand if you look at your favorite influencers, and find ways to learn from them. In the case that your personal brand is perhaps slightly risqué, embrace your privacy settings. You don’t want to be the person a prospective employer doesn’t believe in simply because they saw a scandalous photo of you on social media.
  16. No one asked for an OxyClean resumé before we bought it. But Billy told us it worked great! If you’re concerned your accomplishment list isn’t long enough, list your qualities. In social media, we always joke around about jobs that are asking for 10+ years of experience. That’s tough in social, especially since platforms like Instagram have only been around for seven years. But no matter how long you’ve worked in social media (or haven’t), you have qualities that are useful to a job – whether you’re highly organized or an amazing writer, these are qualities that potential employers will still focus on, even if your job experience isn’t an exact match. Sell yourself like you would sell a client’s product – When I say I’m a “Forbes 30 Under 30” winner I feel like a pompous jerk, but if I represented a product that won a major award, I would shout that from the mountain tops. The same thing goes when you’re applying for jobs or writing on your LinkedIn. Look at yourself like you’re making money to sell a product – because you ultimately are. There are lots of moments when a TV host will ask an interviewee a highly inappropriate question. There will be job interviews where you are asked not inappropriate questions, but difficult questions. Ask yourself these questions and prepare responses beforehand. These questions very much may apply to your list of accomplishments rather than qualities, but find a way to rearrange the answer for your qualities instead. Then, go back to believing in yourself like a client’s product.
  17. But don’t just take it from me! I talked to a friend who is an HR manager at a top American corporation (not Hallmark!). Here is what she said are the secret ingredients when she is hiring. Someone is their own brand – Well looky here! That works for us. Show that you have the skills – but don’t’ forget you also need to show that you have a desire to learn. This really goes back to faking it til you make it – you might portray that you have it all down, but you also need to show that you’ll learn what skills you don’t. Community involvement – this is a compelling thing to include on your LinkedIn that isn’t related directly to your workplace. It shows care and time management – two things employers and award folks love. Then of course, be interested, but not aggressive.
