“The Lost Boy”
The fictional life and death of a twelve year old little boy named Robert is vividly articulated in this
moving tale by Thomas Wolfe. The reader learns of the boy s life through four well developed points
of view. The reader s first glimpse into Robert s character is expressed through a third person
narrative. This section takes place on a particularly important afternoon in the boy s life. The second
and third views are memories of the child, through the eyes of his mother and sister. His mother paints
the picture of an extraordinary child whom she loved dearly and his sister illustrates the love that the
boy had for others. Finally, an account from the narrator is given in the ending. It is in the last section
of this work that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he enters his dad s business he tells him exactly what had transpired at the candy store. Robert s
enraged father corrects the situation with the store owner in a rather harsh manner, saying many
hurtful things to the clerk. The day s events seem to leave a lasting impression on the youth. He only
knew that something had been gained forever something lost. (2007)
In the second and third portions of the saga the boy s mother and sister recall personal memories of the
deceased. The narrator is established as Robert s younger brother in these sections, as well. The
mother in this story unapologetically minimizes the narrator s abilities while exalting Robert. It is not
hard to see that Robert is their mother s favorite child. The proud mother gushes about the boy s
ability to stretch a dollar and his unnatural intellect. She goes so far as to tell a reporter inquiring about
the narrator s brilliance, that the narrator was not the most intelligent child she had given birth to The
best one of the whole lot was Robert! (2010) The boys sister seems to share her mother s adoration for
Robert and can t quite grasp the narrators inability to remember their beloved. She also, reiterates that
Robert was her mother s favorite child you know he always was her eyeballs... (2014). In expressing
to the narrator her memories of a past life where Robert was alive and well the sister reveals her own
inability to distinguish the past

The Role Of The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) was created by Congress in the Foreign
Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) of 1978. The role of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court
is to provide judicial oversight of Intelligence Community activities in a classified setting. It is
composed of federal judges appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The
decisions of the court can be reviewed by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review
(FISCR) and the Supreme Court. After the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendments Act of
2008, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has to rule on important and novel Fourth
Amendment issues raised by the government s proposed targeting and minimization procedures
(EPIC, 2015). The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court was originally composed of seven district
judges appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States to serve for a maximum of seven years.
Amendments in the USA Patriot Act increased the number of judges on the Court to eleven, with three
required to live within twenty miles of the District of Columbia in 2001. The Chief Justice appoints a
Presiding Judge for the court from amongst these eleven judges. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance
Court operates out of a secure location in the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C., but can
authorize searches or surveillance anywhere within the United States (EPIC, 2015). The Foreign

Determining The Relationship Between Extracurricular...
Determining relationship between Extracurricular Activities and Academic Performance using
Computational Intelligence Tejaswini Koduri Department of Computer Science, Georgia State
University tkoduri11@gsu.student.edu Abstract Elementary school is the medium for the students to
step into the professional field. The knowledge can achieved from curriculum by following it.But the
hands on experience on the subject can be gained only through the extracurricular activities. So,
students should take some responsibility to participate in extracurricular activities. The advantages of
extracurricular activities are students can get more personal experience by involving in these activities
and gain more knowledge when compared to the knowledge obtained from theoretical concepts or
curriculum. The student who involves in extracurricular activities can easily survive in the
professional world while the student who only dependant on curriculum face some difficulties like
unable to make a right decision at right time, communication with peers and also face difficulty in
implementation of concepts . In this paper we collect both the data from the students who involved in
extracurricular activities and the data collected from academic curriculum of students in a semester.
This paper proposes that how extracurricular activities support the overall growth of student by using
computational intelligence. I like the idea of determining relationship using mamdani model. I would

Essay on Italy in World War II
Italy in World War II
World War II, which only lasted about five years, changed the course of history forever, and affected
millions of lives. Among the major nations that were involved in the war, Benito Mussolini and his
Italian army sought to settle their differences with many nations. Benito s fascist views, his idea of a
nation built by one race, and his relationship with Adolf Hitler ultimately led to his involvement in the
war. His responsibility, in essence, was to ally himself with the superpowers of the world, and lead his
people into a war that they could not fight.
Il Duce , (the leader), was the name that Benito Mussolini gave himself as his rise to power in Italy
continued. He led the people of Italy with the mind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He won over the people of Italy using the same techniques and imagery that Hitler used in his
homeland. The fascist ideas, and idea of an ultimate Italian empire, appealed to Mussolini, and he
would stop at nothing to gain power.
Along with the Fascist Party, came the idea of a perfect race of man, and persecution. Hitler s idea of a
non Jewish race appealed to Mussolini. Before the war began, Benito Mussolini and his army started
their persecution of the Jews in Italy. This did not last long, however, because Mussolini s popularity
began to fall. As his popularity among his people began to decline, so did his relations with many
European nations. Much of Italy s foreign relations depended solely on treaties and pacts. (5) As
Germany and Italy moved together towards a uniform society, the strength and honor of the treaties
were in jeopardy.
As the war broke out in Europe in 1940, Mussolini did his best to stay away from the fighting. He
preached to his people that his army was ready to fight in the war, and was prepared to defend himself,
and conquer land for his country. (6) Benito Mussolini s main objective in the war was to gain land,
and claim the land for Italy. His idea was to create the ultimate empire, and rule over millions of
people. As World War II approached, Mussolini announced his intention of annexing Malta, Corsica,
and Tunis. (7) His intentions increased as he captured Albania in April of 1939. His rise to the

The Black And Burgundy Made Me Essay
I never thought that my nails were going to draw too much attention. I was enjoying how the nail
polish looked on my hands, it was an exciting change. The combination of black and burgundy made
me feel powerful, reckless, and confident because I was subverting and redefining social norms. I felt
like a man, but the rest of society saw me differently. In our society nail polish is for women. Painting
nails is a beauty practice that embraces femininity and womanhood. My nails cast an instantaneous
label on myself. Many individuals questioned my sexuality and gender. It was like my masculinity
was endangered by the colors of my nails and I was no longer considered a man anymore. Why do
you paint your nails? Are you gay? Is it a new trend? Wait, what is that on your nails? , I was a threat
to what society defines as a man, therefore people were desperate to define the purpose of my painted
nails. The interference of sex and gender norms causes disruption to social order and people seem to
be determine to redefine, correct or erase the variation.
Every characteristic of an individual s life is determined by their genitals. Why is gender attribution so
meaningful to social order and why does the inability to classify someone sex s cause such a major
disruption? (Preves, 2004:13). Gender classification starts from birth, when a baby is identified as a
boy or girl. The reveal of the child s gender designates their future. Their social interactions, gender

Democracy And Its Effect On Democracy
Democracy in its most basic form is a type of governing system ruled by the citizens of a particular
society. The first form of democracy can be found in ancient Greece, and the modern form of
Democracy was established in part by the French revolution because it brought back the idea of rule
by the people. Although, for most of history democracy was not viewed in a positive light. According
to Mintz, Close, and Croci many people feared democracy because they thought the masses would not
act with reason and would try to take away power from the elite classes (2015). It was not until
relatively recently in history that democracy became the leading form of governing around the world.
This essay will focus on the different manifestations of democracy and how they function. The core of
democracy is that the people in a society should have a say in governing and decision making;
however in order to be considered a democracy a country must follow other democratic principles.
This essay will argue that in many cases practical application of democracy does not always allow the
people to have their view adequately translated into government and policy, due to the limitations of
their political system. The only real power people have is electing a select few to their positions in
government, or voting on decisions and policy decided by those officials. This does not allow for
everyone and their views represented in government. This essay will also argue that some democratic
systems

Examples Of Escapism In The Vietnam War
During the Vietnam war in 1955, many American troops were affected both psychologically and
physically, both soldiers inside Vietnam and the friends and families on the outside. Upon being thrust
into this world of death and warfare, the issue arose of soldiers not being able to cope resulting in
many war side effects. To avoid this many of the soldiers developed and practiced coping mechanisms
to help them deal with the horrors of war. Common forms of coping mechanisms were both
controversial to the US army and despised by many Americans back home. Examples of escapism
used are prostitution, psychological escapism, drugs, and narcotics as well as alcohol. As well as being
controversial these coping mechanisms also affected soldiers performances ... Show more content on

An Ebook For Students Who Are Interested Into Taking Level...
Task 1 This project involves me making an eBook for students who are interested in taking level 2
digital technology with programming (Year 12DIP). The content in the eBook will consist of course
information for the students and strategies of how they can excel in the level 2 DIP course. The
stakeholder for my eBook is Mr Patchigalla who will use my eBook in the future to give to the
students who are interested in this course more knowledge of the subject and a sense of what they will
be doing. The eBook would cover all the aspects for Level 2 DIP and hopefully enable the students to
understand the subject in more detail. My client/stakeholder, Mr Patchigalla will be providing me with
all the content that is to go into my eBook. The eBook would act as a guide for the students and would
also include some methods that students can implement to receive the higher grades in the subject. It
is hoped that through this eBook, many students will be able to use some of the strategies that I used
last year to get excellence endorsement for the subject and get good grades for the course. In addition
to this the eBook would help my client as he would be able to share the eBook online with all year 11
students looking in to study 12DIP the following year. This is very important as currently the school
only has a small guide online that very briefly explains what each subject is about which many
students don t find too useful in helping them to make the decision whether they would like

The Evolution Of Political Philosophy And Political Science
As centuries have passed, political thought has undergone constant development and together with its
development are changes. These changes had a tremendous effect in the discipline. Political
philosophy continued to progress which affected both political theory and political science. It seems
that with the progression of political philosophy, there was a growing need for the the discipline to
become more scientific. They wanted it to be based on facts, to become value free and to be precise.
Political philosophy started veering away from the classics. Despite the continuous need to be
scientific, there were still groups which remained inclined to the classics and believed that the
traditions and values are essential in studying the discipline. These conflicting views concerning the
traditionalists and the behavioralists caused the gap between political philosophy and political science
and eventually the two separated. So it seems that as political philosophy progress, political science
branched outside the academe and political theory, as it grew larger became more and more alienated.
In order to explain why political science drifted apart from political philosophy, one must go back to
the history of political philosophy. It is important to understand what was the state of political
philosophy during the the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Body Dysmorphic Disorder Research Paper
Body dysmorphic disorder is a distinct mental illness, which causes an individual to become obsessive
on focusing on their flaws in appearance, and to others the flaw may be minor or not visible. It is also
known as dysmorphophobia. Patients affected by BDD have deeply negative thoughts about their
appearance. In the limbic system, hyperactivity causes individuals to feel as if they are constantly
being critiqued and negatively judged by others. Individuals diagnosed with the illness often look into
surgery for their physical appearance to enhance. There are more than 200,000 cases a year involving
body dysmorphic disorder, and about 1 in 50 people are affected (Phillips, 2004). Constantly

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is extremely effective and has techniques that treat those who suffer
from the disorder. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the primary technique used. It uses a
method called imaginal exposure, which involves writing short stories about the flaws and obsessions
the patient has on their body. Cognitive Restructuring teaches clients to question their negative view
on their body. This allows them to rethink whether or not the flaw is actually significant. Those with
BDD are taught to non judgmentally accept the uncomforted feeling of their past situations. That is
called Mindfulness Based CBT. The goal of mindfulness is for individuals to accept their past
experiences and think about their thoughts, feelings, and avoidance

Looking For Advice Research Paper
One of the biggest mistakes people make when looking for advice is seeking it from only one person.
Getting multiple opinions on a certain decision or situation could be the difference between a
complete disaster taking place or a relieving solution. Some advice that others give happens to be
useless and irrational, but if someone seeks more than one opinion, he or she could avoid bad advice
by following the good instead. More opinions equals more options. Seeking multiple opinions is
beneficial for you, and others too, because everyone has a different mindset, it can prevent bad
decisions, and even helps a person make better choices in the future. To begin with, every human in
the world has a different mindset. Some think deeply, some think simply. We are all different from the
way we dress to the way we draw stick people. With different mindsets comes different perspectives,
or ways to look at a situation. Some people may think something is wrong while ... Show more

If someone was to ask only one person for advice, he or she may receive bad guidance. Good advice
isn t always guaranteed. If someone was to follow bad guidance, they are at risk for making a terrible
decision. But if that person looks for more opinions, instead of jumping to conclusions with the bad
advice, he or she could find a better solution to the the problem at hand. No matter the situation,
anyone can find understanding people to listen and share opinions with. Listening to these opinions
can have a great influence on the effect of the problem. For example, if Sam had to decide between
buying a brand new car and a used one, he could ask his friends what their opinions are. Some people
may say to buy the new car because it will last him longer. Others could advise him to purchase the
used one to help him financially. Everyone has different opinions and beliefs, so it is always beneficial

leading topic in our world for a long period of time, a recent study showed that approximately sixty
eight million immigrant have migrated to America since the year 1970. Think to yourself, what is the
reason that all these immigrants have migrated to America, and what effect do they have on

Vanity In Pride And Prejudice
Solomon was known as the smartest and wisest man in the world. He became a king of Israel, and
decided that he was going to figure out where happiness is found. He thought that money might be
able to make him happy, so he became the richest man in the world, but he was unsuccessful in his
pursuit of happiness. He then tried alcohol and women, but he was still unsuccessful. By the end of his
pursuit, he eventually determined that happiness could not be found in possessions and money, or any
earthly pleasure. For people in modern times, possessions and wealth are often what guide
relationships the modern life in general. People who put value in material wealth will struggle and
struggle all their lives, but will never be able to find true happiness. Literature and entertainment
provides countless examples of the truth of this statement. For much of their lives, Fitzwilliam Darcy
and Charlie Babbitt show only pride and love for their money and possessions, and until they met the
people who eventually be the most important to them, they weren t able to truly experience love and
redemption from their vain lifestyles.
In both Pride and Prejudice and Rain Man, Charlie and Mr. Darcy show traits of excessive pride and
vanity when they find self worth in their money and social status. When Charlie originally decides he

Old Boy Taking Out The Sled Analysis
Old Boy Taking Out the Sled is a illustration that shows a young boy with an unusual old looking
beard preparing his Sled for use. He prepares his Sled outside on the balcony over looking the ocean
and the waves hitting the shore, as he is working an eagle is placed right near him entering his home,
but he pays not attention to it. Eagles are represented as strong creatures and a symbol of freedom
which is what the painting conveys. FORM Texture plays an important role in this painting, from the
hard brush strokes that created the oceans realistic look to the Sleds rough and wooden look. The

The way light is displayed in the painting shows the type of day it is and helped the artist with
knowing to use bright colors that appeal to light. There are many shapes and lines throughout the
canvas that increases the depth of the illustration. The type of shapes mainly seen are squares and
rectangles. The squares seen in the picture of the painting itself is square, the window leading out the
the balcony, and the shape of which the background sunset an ocean is framed in is also square as
well. All those shapes and angles help create the realism in the picture and create the 3D affect on the
canvas. The colors on this canvas are very bright and has a lot of the most known or popular colors
like blue, white, orange, and red. All of these light colors contribute to the overall looks and feeling of
happiness that the painting conveys. The way the colors are blended on the canvas helped create the
deeper colors for the ocean and the sky s vibrant detail. Color detail and the lines created and

Having a successful youth basketball program means, more than teaching the skills and strategy
required for the game. Instead, a coach must consider multiple components and determine how each
element fits together. This portfolio shows how I would put together these elements for a successful

rather success happens with an athlete centered style that develops athletes physically,
psychologically, socially, and spiritually.

The Loss Of Faith And The Decline Of Church Attendance
Secularization the loss of faith and the decline in church attendance is something that has left
historians asking why this occurred and at what point in history did the people of Great Britain lose

contraception pill and immigration to Great Britain, which brought together people from other
colonies and with them they brought their religion, the connection between any of these factors if
there is one has and will be debated for years to come. Historian Callum Brown has used several other

Mr Brown puts the date at 1963 and believes that, the 1960s saw the British people going to church
less and less, whilst other religious denominations thrived, the Christian benchmark of moral such as
attending church and Sunday school, baptizing children, marrying in church has all but disappeared.
The decline is attributed to the decentring of rigid moral codes such as increased sexual freedom and
freedom for diverse sexualities, greater gender equality and a new tolerance of religious and ethnic
difference .
Whilst Brown believes that sex and the lack of religion are interlinked there are others that show that
the origins of sex and religion and the moral views people held go back before the 1960s, with the
history of sex going back centuries with the historian Faramerz Dabhoiwala writing, on the banks of
the Thames in 1612 the towns court house is in session dealing with a routine criminal case that of an
unmarried man and woman, who have been arrested and brought before the court, interrogated, put on
trial and found guilty by a jury of men , their crime was having sexual relations. For sex was illegal
outside of marriage and was seen by the church along with ordinary people as something that was
punishable unless the couple was married, as illicit relations were angered God, prevented salvation,
damaged personal relations and undermined social order .

The Future Of An Illusion Essay
An Analysis of The Future of an Illusion
In Sigmund Freud s famous philosophical work titled The Future of an Illusion, he uses
psychoanalysis to explain the origins of the concept of God. He presents valid arguments as to why
God is merely a concept created by humans to answer frustrating questions about life in a satisfying
way, and the work seems to be sound in its entirety. However, there is an important weakness in Freud
s reasoning in that if God is meant to create order in the universe, why does the thought of Him create
conflict, fear, and contradiction? Furthermore, though his psychoanalytic explanation provides
fascinating answers to why people believe in God, it cannot demonstrate that God definitely does not
exist.
Famous for his theories of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud asserted that all human behavior could be
boiled down to sexual and aggressive desires. In this particular book, he explains that humans created
civilization to prevent conflict, since there would be chaos if humans were allowed to express their
natural sexual and aggressive tendencies without a higher power telling them that was wrong. The
principal task of civilization... he states, ... is to defend us against nature (Pg. 15). However, while a
civilization governed by human beings may help protect its members from murder, rape, stealing,
cheating, etc., it is not capable of protecting its members from natural disasters and the reality of
death. Moreover, civilization itself causes problems

Analysis Of The Abolition Of Man
In the Abolition of man one of the main arguments that Lewis makes was that the result of education
in the spirit of the green book is the destruction of the society that accepts it. In the green book the
authors named G T place their own opinion within the book which is that people should only use their
reason when making decisions and not their emotions or spirited element. The authors state this
because in society peoples views are often reflected in their work intentionally or unintentionally and
in the green book the authors fall in this trap. In the book Lewis states that G T have not taught
students english. Instead they have expressed their opinions on philosophy and morality which can
corrupt the minds of the youth and those who read it. Another argument made by Lewis in the
Abolition of Man is the view of the waterfall and wether it is sublime in itself or if it is sublime
because of how the speaker is feeling. Lewis states that things in nature can be in itself beautiful or
pretty without the view of a human because there is a standard for everything and it can either meet
that criteria or not. G T state that the speaker says the waterfall is sublime because the speaker feels
pretty and therefor is projecting the way he or she feels onto the waterfall. Lewis says that G T are
wrong because things can hold an attribute within themselves such as national park being a national
park. The national park is a national park because there is a beauty to it that is

Road Trip Research Paper
Why didn t you put on some sunscreen? What were you thinking? These are some of the questions
that arose on a long summer road trip. During the summer of 2016, my family and I went on a three
week road trip starting in Chestertown, NY, and going as far west as Yellowstone National Park. The
first stop on the trip was Niagara Falls. We went at night, and the water was lit up in various colors, it
was pretty cool. These days heading out west were mainly long days in the truck followed up with
even more long days in the truck. Before we went to on the trip, I thought that the trip down to Albany
took forever, but a couple of fifteen plus hour drives going out west made going to Albany seem like it
was just down the road. After two, maybe three days we were driving through Chicago at 3 in the
morning (that s the time of night I saw several major cities along this trip) I thought it looked nice
from what I could see, but then again it was 3 in the morning. That night, we didn t have any
reservations, so we ended up trying to just spend the night in a Walmart parking lot on the outskirts of
Chicago (what an idea). We tried to go to bed for like 10 mins, and I swear I could hear a gun firing
off in the distance, and you could hear people walking by the camper, and not to mention the cop
sirens you could hear too. We basically got back in the truck and left real quick. Next, we went north
and ended up staying at a place on the Missouri River for a couple of nights. The

Picky Eater By Julia Alvarez
At some point of a kid s life, they want to be picky about something. They want to have some control
of their little world where adults are constantly telling them what to wear, what to do, and what to eat.
Food, for instance, is an easy topic where kids will fight for some independence. Throwing, yelling,
crying and even bribing were the essence of a battle at dinner tables. Because some parents would
automatically give in to their children s need, the kids often think they won the battle but technically
they didn t. In the story, Picky Eater , Julia Alvarez tells a story of her childhood experience of home
meals where her and her sisters were also picky eaters, despite having healthy food served to them.
Meals, she said, at home were battlegrounds. Even if you won the dinner battle, refusing to clean your
plate or drink your engrudo, you inevitably lost the war (Alvarez 145). Battlegrounds at home can
occur but it doesn t have to end up being messy if the parents know how to handle the situation
properly. In Picky Eater Alvarez mentioned that her parents particularly her mother was very strict on
the type of food the children ate. Getting food from en la calle was strictly forbidden (Alvarez 144)
because they might get sick catching some kind of disease from people who have prepared their food.
Also, because Alvarez and her sisters were very thin, having leftovers on their plate wasn t allowed.
To ensure her kids got all the nutrition they needed, the mother had

Daoism In China
1. The common theme I gathered from both the web article and web video is Daoism s role in China s
strategy in dealing with environmental issues and how it s philosophy relates to modern life. Bilhartz
did well in explaining the Daoism philosophy of going with the flow of life and living in harmony
with nature. To these mystics, some who later would be known as Daoists, human needs were best met
when individuals rejected all artificial restraints and lived spontaneously in harmony with nature
(Bilhartz, 2006, p. 267). The article explained that the Chinese government looked to Daoism to
provide a moral and spiritual approach to the environmental issue, rather than engaging an economic
approach. The growing environmental issues the Chinese

Essay on My Nursing Career
Me and my nursing career
As a child, a nurse wearing a white uniform and a doctor wearing white coat fascinated me. My cousin
was a nurse and often when I visited her, I felt a force pulling me or attracting me to that white
uniform. Never realized until I became a nurse that it was not a dream, I was destined to be a nurse.
Today we call Florence Nightingale pioneer of nursing and Mother Teresa the epitome of love and
compassion (, 2010, p. 1). These women choose to do what was in their heart, the passion to serve the
hungry and needy, sick and poor, leper and beggar, weak and in street, embracing them with love and

Recently I read in OJIN magazine, students shared that they entered a nursing program because they
valued a career involving altruism, making a difference, intellectual challenges, goal attainment, job
security, and flexibility (Rhodes, Morris, amp; Lazenby, Feb 25 2011, p. 2). Altruism was identified as
the most dominant theme and students considered themselves as caring individuals (Rhodes et al., Feb
25 2011, p. 2). Besides flexibility, job security and career opportunities I consider nursing one of the
well paying jobs. Higher education brings prospects of climbing the ladder in the same facility. I work
as a patient flow coordinator and my job is to maintain the flow of patient throughout the hospital, in
terms of admission, discharge and transfers. My job does not require direct patient care but it gives me
opportunity to communicate with all departments and health personnel throughout the hospital.
As I described in introduction my motto is from Bible Do unto others what they would have do unto
you. Going above and beyond our call of duty or walking extra mile that what as a nurse I choose to
do. Bottom line is I love my job and at the end of the day it gives me an immense sense of fulfillment.
Numerous issues concern me about the nursing profession. First is nursing shortage. Hospitals are not
able to maintain nurse patient ratio due to nursing shortage thus nursing staff is under tremendous
stress, workload is too much

The Barbary War
I claim that the Barbary war helped set the foundation for the United States military that we have
today. America has been fighting terrorism from almost the very beginning. Barbary pirates ran the
trade off the northern coast of Africa, they required many wealthy countries to pay off the pirates to
keep their merchant ships safe. The United States was not one of those countries, mainly because it
didn t have enough money to pay the pirates off. After multiple American merchant ships had been
seized by these pirates, Thomas Jefferson became fetup. Jefferson pleaded President Washington to
take action. This eventually led to the birth of the U.S. Navy. The Barbary war started the layout of the
U.S. Navy that we know today. The Navy made its debut against the pirates it was a test, but it helped
shape the Navy and helped make it stronger. Although it was brand, the Navy stood up to widely
feared Barbary pirates, and showed just a glimmer of what it would become in the future. Had it not
been for this fight against these terrorising pirates then it might have taken much longer for the U.S. ...

The Interconnectedness Of Cultural Anthropology And Folk...
The chief concern of this paper is to explore the interconnectedness of cultural anthropology and folk
literature. There are many essays that have already shown the interrelationship between folklore and
anthropology1. Both these umbrella terms have many things in common but when it comes to folk
literature and cultural anthropology, some distinctions become apparent. To say, hence, this paper is
different in a sense that instead of dealing with the broad areas of folklore and anthropology, it looks
at their branches and explores interconnectedness between them. Before moving further, one needs to
understand the area of folklore and folk literature. American Folklore Society (AFS) defines folklore
as the traditional art, literature, knowledge, and practice that is disseminated largely through oral
communication and behavioral example . It clearly hints that folklore is a broad term which includes
all the types of expressions whether oral, written, visual, or performative. This leads to an inference
that folk literature is one of the branches of folklore which deals with verbal and written expressions.
Similarly, anthropology is a jacket term which means a study of humanity including the prehistoric to
contemporary, whereas the cultural anthropology is one of its four branches which aims to understand
and define why a certain group behaves differently from the other group. These clarifications lead to
another inference that though both anthropology and folklore study human

The Civilization Of The Mayan Civilizations In Central...
The Mayan civilization is very complex. The Mayans were an ancient people who lived throughout
Central America from 1800 B.C. to 900 A.D. This was the time when the cities were abandoned. The
term, Mayans, also refers to the living descendants of the ancient civilization who now live in Mexico,
Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and even California. They spoke, and some still speak;
Yucatec, Quiché, Kekchi, and Mopan.
The ancient Maya civilization could be categorized into a few simple sections, the religion, the
advancements in math and science, and the daily life. Their religion consisted of many things like
deities, religious services, calendars, priests, temples, and so much more. The Mayan religion was
integrated into every single aspect of Mayan life. It even affected the name of their children. The
Mayans made most of their decisions based on the priests.
The priests were categorized into five major categories. The ahuacan were the high priests. The
chilans were the prophets who were in charge of interpreting the future. Next, were the nacons and
chacs, their major job was to aid the ahuacan with sacrifices. The ahmen, they were devoted to prayer,
much like a shaman.
There were many rituals to heal, to talk to the gods, to improve crops, to bless marriages, and to bless
kings. Many rituals involved bloodletting, sacrificing animals, or more widely known, humans. People
were sacrificed for important events such as the dedicating of a king.

An Inspector Calls
An Inspector Calls One of the main themes of JB Priestley s play An Inspector Calls is how man treats

conscience and make them take responsibility for their treatment of Eva Smith. I think he does this by
not making him like a character but like their conscience and by making his name Goole like Ghoul. I

Capernaum was constructed along the edge of the Sea of Galilee, it housed up to 1,500 residents. Its

The Study of Motivation Essay
Literature Review
Motivation
MacIntyre et al. (2001) define motivation as an attribute of the individual describing the psychological
qualities underlying behavior with respect to a particular task (p. 463). The study of motivation as a
predictor of second language learning performance was initiated by Gardner and his Canadian
colleagues (1972).
According to Gardner and Lambert (1972), there are two kinds of motivation: integrative motivation,
referring to a holistic learning approach toward the speech and culture of the target language group,
and instrumental motivation, referring to language learning for more immediate or practical goals.
Intrinsic and extrinsic are the new classifications of motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the ... Show

Both types are important. A learner might learn an L2 well with an integrative motivation or with an
instrumental one, or indeed with both (Cook, 1991). . The level of identification with bilingual or
trilingual identity is also influenced by the learners attitudes toward the learning situation. These
attitudes refer to the individuals reactions to anything associated with the immediate context (e.g., the
course and the teaching environment) in which the language is taught (Gardner, 1985).All the men
show higher instrumental motivation towards foreign language learning than woman.
Instrumental motivation, also called rational, pragmatic and utilitarian, refers to the individual s desire
to acquire a second language in order to use it for operational purposes, to pass an examination,
acquire a job, or visit a foreign country (ibid). Rahman explains rational language learning as the
learning of a language in order to empower oneself by acquiring the potential to acquire employment
(2002). . It has been pointed out that Gardner s motivation theory includes an educational dimension
and that, the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB), that he and his colleagues developed contains
several items focusing on the learner s evaluation of the teacher and classroom learning situation.
Gardner and MacIntyre (1991) themselves had noted later that the old characterization of motivation

The progression of Confucianism Before Confucianism during the Shang dynasty the method of

The verbs the Magistrate uses to describe his own actions towards the girl in the selected passage,
such as prowl, hunt, and even seeking create an image of a furtive predator rather than a lover. This is
a manifestation of the guilt he feels for his part in her injuries. But we do not get a real sense of threat
or danger from the Magistrate because he states that this hunter is non invasive: he does not enter her
and has no urge to do so. Even the phrases touching her face, and caressing her body, which normally
would invoke intimacy, when put in the context of prowling give the impression of a hunter
thoroughly examining the pelt of its prey. It is easy to make the connection between this image and the
image of the Magistrate examining the barbarian girl s broken ankles and scars. Joll and the
accomplice torturers are also referred to as hunting the girl; while Joll was aggressively searching for
a secret he never found, the Magistrate hunts for how to figure her out and enter her surface, which he
also fails to find. However, they both hunt for some sort of meaning from this girl, suggesting Joll s
use of her is similar to the Magistrate s use for her. Joll tortures her to try to get secret information

Video Game Violence And Its Effects On Gamers
Video Game Violence and its effects on Gamers In recent years there has been a significant increase of
shooting incidents, specifically in America. When there is a shooting event the media is quick to
question if the suspect had a history of playing violent video games. There is already the initial
connection between video game violence and aggression; but is this connection scientifically correct?
This topic interests me because of the increase in school shootings and violence. I have personally
heard many times that video game violence has led to many adolescents to extreme forms of violence.
Through what has been said in the media I decided to research the topic myself. This is a current event
issue that is a present reality for many college students. Does video game violence directly relate to
human violence? Does video game violence effect aggression? Does technological advances and
violent content effect humans and their aggression? Does violent video games cause hostel thoughts?
While researching the connection between video game violence and violence in children I came across
communication theories that can help us understand how these two connect and effect people. From

What Is Respect And Why Is It Importantn?
Respect takes place everywhere we go, the movie theater, school, home, and even restaurants. Respect

same situation can also happen outside of school very well as inside. For instance, say an average

because he looks down on him and believes he is higher ranking in society. Again, I have also

Innovation And Management Of Technological Development Essay
Proposal to Include Innovation and Management of Technological Development in the New Zealand
Technology Curriculum
Barbara Clarke
TEMS340 16A
Our current New Zealand Technology learning area aims to develop in students a broad technological
literacy that will equip them to participate in society as informed citizens and give them access to
technology related careers (Ministry of Education, 2007, p. 32). Through the learning opportunities in
each of three distinct strands: Technological Practice, Technological Knowledge and the Nature of
Technology, students are provided with opportunities to be creative, innovative and to develop
technological skill through practical activity. It does not however currently address the specific
development of Innovation and the Management of Technological Practice in its curriculum strands
and component descriptors.
With the Technological Practice strand focusing on planning for practice, brief development, outcome
development and evaluation and the Technological Knowledge strand focused on technological
modelling, products and systems, the curriculum has the make and do aspects of technology generally
well covered. However it is the third strand, being The Nature of technology which studies the
characteristics of technology and those of technological outcomes that must be further developed with
the addition of Technological Innovation and the Management of Technological practice as additional
objectives.

opinion, without him, the Polio epidemic would still be killing many people, in not only the U.S., but
around the world as well. Jonas Salk was born on October 28, 1914, in New York. He grew up with
parents who had never finished school. His parents had always encouraged him to do well in school,
and do better than they did. In fact, Jonas was the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He knew that Polio caused paralysis, and invaded the nervous system. As a result, he wanted to end
the greatest epidemic in America at that time. As he began researching, the president of the March of
Dimes Foundation, Basal O Connor, wanted to help Salk create the Polio vaccination. His goal was to
fund Salk to find a cure against Paralytic Poliomyelitis, or Polio. Jonas devoted the next 8 years of his
life working to develop the vaccine. He finally was able to create the vaccine, using formaldehyde, or
a chemical compound. Salk used the killed Polio virus to immunize without being infected, or
becoming infected after the injection. Soon after the vaccine was created, they began to test it on
monkeys; and then they tested it on children who already had Polio at the Watson Institute. After that
trial was done, the testing spread to volunteers who wanted the vaccine; this included Jonas, his wife,
and his family. By 1954, national testing began on children between the ages of 6 9. On April 12,
1955, they were able to conclude that the vaccine was safe and effective. Salk became known as a
miracle worker, although he remained selfless. Jonas wanted no major payment, or recognition for the
creation of the vaccine. In fact, he credited that the vaccine creation was accomplished due to the help
of John Enders, a Harvard researcher. Enders was the man

  • 2. “The Lost Boy” The fictional life and death of a twelve year old little boy named Robert is vividly articulated in this moving tale by Thomas Wolfe. The reader learns of the boy s life through four well developed points of view. The reader s first glimpse into Robert s character is expressed through a third person narrative. This section takes place on a particularly important afternoon in the boy s life. The second and third views are memories of the child, through the eyes of his mother and sister. His mother paints the picture of an extraordinary child whom she loved dearly and his sister illustrates the love that the boy had for others. Finally, an account from the narrator is given in the ending. It is in the last section of this work that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When he enters his dad s business he tells him exactly what had transpired at the candy store. (2007) In the second and third portions of the saga the boy s mother and sister recall personal memories of the deceased. The narrator is established as Robert s younger brother in these sections, as well. The mother in this story unapologetically minimizes the narrator s abilities while exalting Robert. It is not hard to see that Robert is their mother s favorite child. The proud mother gushes about the boy s ability to stretch a dollar and his unnatural intellect. She goes so far as to tell a reporter inquiring about the narrator s brilliance, that the narrator was not the most intelligent child she had given birth to The best one of the whole lot was Robert! • 3. The Role Of The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) was created by Congress in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) of 1978. The role of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court is to provide judicial oversight of Intelligence Community activities in a classified setting. It is composed of federal judges appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The decisions of the court can be reviewed by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review (FISCR) and the Supreme Court. After the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendments Act of 2008, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has to rule on important and novel Fourth Amendment issues raised by the government s proposed targeting and minimization procedures (EPIC, 2015). The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court was originally composed of seven district judges appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States to serve for a maximum of seven years. Amendments in the USA Patriot Act increased the number of judges on the Court to eleven, with three required to live within twenty miles of the District of Columbia in 2001. The Chief Justice appoints a Presiding Judge for the court from amongst these eleven judges. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court operates out of a secure location in the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C., but can authorize searches or surveillance anywhere within the United States (EPIC, 2015). • 5. Essay on Italy in World War II Italy in World War II World War II, which only lasted about five years, changed the course of history forever, and affected millions of lives. Among the major nations that were involved in the war, Benito Mussolini and his Italian army sought to settle their differences with many nations. Benito s fascist views, his idea of a nation built by one race, and his relationship with Adolf Hitler ultimately led to his involvement in the war. His responsibility, in essence, was to ally himself with the superpowers of the world, and lead his people into a war that they could not fight. Il Duce , (the leader), was the name that Benito Mussolini gave himself as his rise to power in Italy continued. He led the people of Italy with the mind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He won over the people of Italy using the same techniques and imagery that Hitler used in his homeland. The fascist ideas, and idea of an ultimate Italian empire, appealed to Mussolini, and he would stop at nothing to gain power. Along with the Fascist Party, came the idea of a perfect race of man, and persecution. Hitler s idea of a non Jewish race appealed to Mussolini. Before the war began, Benito Mussolini and his army started their persecution of the Jews in Italy. This did not last long, however, because Mussolini s popularity began to fall. As his popularity among his people began to decline, so did his relations with many European nations. Much of Italy s foreign relations depended solely on treaties and pacts. (5) As Germany and Italy moved together towards a uniform society, the strength and honor of the treaties were in jeopardy. As the war broke out in Europe in 1940, Mussolini did his best to stay away from the fighting. He preached to his people that his army was ready to fight in the war, and was prepared to defend himself, and conquer land for his country. (6) Benito Mussolini s main objective in the war was to gain land, and claim the land for Italy. His idea was to create the ultimate empire, and rule over millions of people. As World War II approached, Mussolini announced his intention of annexing Malta, Corsica, and Tunis. (7) His intentions increased as he captured Albania in April of 1939. His rise to the ... • 6. The Black And Burgundy Made Me Essay I never thought that my nails were going to draw too much attention. I was enjoying how the nail polish looked on my hands, it was an exciting change. The combination of black and burgundy made me feel powerful, reckless, and confident because I was subverting and redefining social norms. I felt like a man, but the rest of society saw me differently. In our society nail polish is for women. Painting nails is a beauty practice that embraces femininity and womanhood. My nails cast an instantaneous label on myself. Many individuals questioned my sexuality and gender. It was like my masculinity was endangered by the colors of my nails and I was no longer considered a man anymore. Why do you paint your nails? Are you gay? Is it a new trend? Wait, what is that on your nails? , I was a threat to what society defines as a man, therefore people were desperate to define the purpose of my painted nails. The interference of sex and gender norms causes disruption to social order and people seem to be determine to redefine, correct or erase the variation. Every characteristic of an individual s life is determined by their genitals. Why is gender attribution so meaningful to social order and why does the inability to classify someone sex s cause such a major disruption? (Preves, 2004:13). • 8. Democracy And Its Effect On Democracy Democracy in its most basic form is a type of governing system ruled by the citizens of a particular society. The first form of democracy can be found in ancient Greece, and the modern form of Democracy was established in part by the French revolution because it brought back the idea of rule by the people. Although, for most of history democracy was not viewed in a positive light. According to Mintz, Close, and Croci many people feared democracy because they thought the masses would not act with reason and would try to take away power from the elite classes (2015). It was not until relatively recently in history that democracy became the leading form of governing around the world. This essay will focus on the different manifestations of democracy and how they function. The core of democracy is that the people in a society should have a say in governing and decision making; however in order to be considered a democracy a country must follow other democratic principles. This essay will argue that in many cases practical application of democracy does not always allow the people to have their view adequately translated into government and policy, due to the limitations of their political system. The only real power people have is electing a select few to their positions in government, or voting on decisions and policy decided by those officials. This does not allow for everyone and their views represented in government. This essay will also argue that some democratic systems ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The content in the eBook will consist of course information for the students and strategies of how they can excel in the level 2 DIP course. The stakeholder for my eBook is Mr Patchigalla who will use my eBook in the future to give to the students who are interested in this course more knowledge of the subject and a sense of what they will be doing. The eBook would cover all the aspects for Level 2 DIP and hopefully enable the students to understand the subject in more detail. My client/stakeholder, Mr Patchigalla will be providing me with all the content that is to go into my eBook. The eBook would act as a guide for the students and would also include some methods that students can implement to receive the higher grades in the subject. It is hoped that through this eBook, many students will be able to use some of the strategies that I used last year to get excellence endorsement for the subject and get good grades for the course. In addition to this the eBook would help my client as he would be able to share the eBook online with all year 11 students looking in to study 12DIP the following year. • 12. The Evolution Of Political Philosophy And Political Science As centuries have passed, political thought has undergone constant development and together with its development are changes. These changes had a tremendous effect in the discipline. Political philosophy continued to progress which affected both political theory and political science. It seems that with the progression of political philosophy, there was a growing need for the the discipline to become more scientific. They wanted it to be based on facts, to become value free and to be precise. Political philosophy started veering away from the classics. Despite the continuous need to be scientific, there were still groups which remained inclined to the classics and believed that the traditions and values are essential in studying the discipline. These conflicting views concerning the traditionalists and the behavioralists caused the gap between political philosophy and political science and eventually the two separated. The Future Of An Illusion Essay An Analysis of The Future of an Illusion In Sigmund Freud s famous philosophical work titled The Future of an Illusion, he uses psychoanalysis to explain the origins of the concept of God. He presents valid arguments as to why God is merely a concept created by humans to answer frustrating questions about life in a satisfying way, and the work seems to be sound in its entirety. However, there is an important weakness in Freud s reasoning in that if God is meant to create order in the universe, why does the thought of Him create conflict, fear, and contradiction? Furthermore, though his psychoanalytic explanation provides fascinating answers to why people believe in God, it cannot demonstrate that God definitely does not exist. Famous for his theories of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud asserted that all human behavior could be boiled down to sexual and aggressive desires. In this particular book, he explains that humans created civilization to prevent conflict, since there would be chaos if humans were allowed to express their natural sexual and aggressive tendencies without a higher power telling them that was wrong. The principal task of civilization... he states, ... is to defend us against nature (Pg. 15). Another argument made by Lewis in the Abolition of Man is the view of the waterfall and wether it is sublime in itself or if it is sublime because of how the speaker is feeling. Lewis states that things in nature can be in itself beautiful or pretty without the view of a human because there is a standard for everything and it can either meet that criteria or not. Both these umbrella terms have many things in common but when it comes to folk literature and cultural anthropology, some distinctions become apparent. To say, hence, this paper is different in a sense that instead of dealing with the broad areas of folklore and anthropology, it looks at their branches and explores interconnectedness between them. Before moving further, one needs to understand the area of folklore and folk literature. American Folklore Society (AFS) defines folklore as the traditional art, literature, knowledge, and practice that is disseminated largely through oral communication and behavioral example . It clearly hints that folklore is a broad term which includes all the types of expressions whether oral, written, visual, or performative. This leads to an inference that folk literature is one of the branches of folklore which deals with verbal and written expressions. Similarly, anthropology is a jacket term which means a study of humanity including the prehistoric to contemporary, whereas the cultural anthropology is one of its four branches which aims to understand and define why a certain group behaves differently from the other group. The ruins are currently owned by two churches and or synagogues. The New Testament is where Capernaum is introduced in Matthew. Matthew refers to Capernaum as Jesus own city. Jesus made Capernaum his home throughout the years of his ministry, Leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum (Matt 4:13). Capernaum is one of the three cities cursed by Jesus for its lack of faith. Jesus was challenged by a demon while teaching in Capernaum. In Capernaum, Jesus healed the servant of the centurion. • 35. The Study of Motivation Essay Literature Review Motivation MacIntyre et al. (2001) define motivation as an attribute of the individual describing the psychological qualities underlying behavior with respect to a particular task (p. 463). The study of motivation as a predictor of second language learning performance was initiated by Gardner and his Canadian colleagues (1972). According to Gardner and Lambert (1972), there are two kinds of motivation: integrative motivation, referring to a holistic learning approach toward the speech and culture of the target language group, and instrumental motivation, referring to language learning for more immediate or practical goals. Intrinsic and extrinsic are the new classifications of motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both types are important. A learner might learn an L2 well with an integrative motivation or with an instrumental one, or indeed with both (Cook, 1991). . The level of identification with bilingual or trilingual identity is also influenced by the learners attitudes toward the learning situation. These attitudes refer to the individuals reactions to anything associated with the immediate context (e.g., the course and the teaching environment) in which the language is taught (Gardner, 1985).All the men show higher instrumental motivation towards foreign language learning than woman. Instrumental motivation, also called rational, pragmatic and utilitarian, refers to the individual s desire to acquire a second language in order to use it for operational purposes, to pass an examination, acquire a job, or visit a foreign country (ibid). Rahman explains rational language learning as the learning of a language in order to empower oneself by acquiring the potential to acquire employment (2002). . It has been pointed out that Gardner s motivation theory includes an educational dimension and that, the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB), that he and his colleagues developed contains several items focusing on the learner s evaluation of the teacher and classroom learning situation. Gardner and MacIntyre (1991) themselves had noted later that the old characterization of motivation in terms of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The practice of oracle bone divination was used to guide the shang and even though this specific ritual is not practiced much today the Shang did provide the idea of a mutual relationship between the living and the dead. I believe that most religions leave some sort of lasting contribution to society and Confucianism s will be both the culture of literate elite as well as the interdependence required for social harmony. I believe the reason she changed this in her reinterpretation is because she wants to make Confucianism more appealing and having a faithful friend might not resonate with people in this modern era due to the decline of religion in general. But with this woman it is as if there is no interior, only a surface across which I hunt back and forth seeking entry. Is this how her torturers felt hunting their secret, whatever they thought it was? pg.43. One of the central figures in J. M. Coetzee s Waiting for the Barbarians is the barbarian girl. The verbs the Magistrate uses to describe his own actions towards the girl in the selected passage, such as prowl, hunt, and even seeking create an image of a furtive predator rather than a lover. This is a manifestation of the guilt he feels for his part in her injuries. But we do not get a real sense of threat or danger from the Magistrate because he states that this hunter is non invasive: he does not enter her and has no urge to do so. Even the phrases touching her face, and caressing her body, which normally would invoke intimacy, when put in the context of prowling give the impression of a hunter thoroughly examining the pelt of its prey. It is easy to make the connection between this image and the image of the Magistrate examining the barbarian girl s broken ankles and scars. Joll and the accomplice torturers are also referred to as hunting the girl; while Joll was aggressively searching for a secret he never found, the Magistrate hunts for how to figure her out and enter her surface, which he also fails to find. However, they both hunt for some sort of meaning from this girl, suggesting Joll s use of her is similar to the Magistrate s use for her. Joll tortures her to try to get secret information about an impending barbarian offensive attack (which turns out to be nonexistent information in the first place). When there is a shooting event the media is quick to question if the suspect had a history of playing violent video games. There is already the initial connection between video game violence and aggression; but is this connection scientifically correct? This topic interests me because of the increase in school shootings and violence. I have personally heard many times that video game violence has led to many adolescents to extreme forms of violence. Through what has been said in the media I decided to research the topic myself. This is a current event issue that is a present reality for many college students. Does violent video games cause hostel thoughts? Respect is an important aspect of our everyday lives. The definition of respect is having a manner of admiration, and or politeness towards the person that you have respect for. Respect is something that holds our entire society together and is visible in many unique ways. Respect holds our society together because no one could go anywhere or do anything because of all of the chaos spreading across their town or city. The very same situation can also happen outside of school very well as inside. For instance, say an average minimum wage citizen passes a less wealthy man. As he began researching, the president of the March of Dimes Foundation, Basal O Connor, wanted to help Salk create the Polio vaccination. His goal was to fund Salk to find a cure against Paralytic Poliomyelitis, or Polio. Jonas devoted the next 8 years of his life working to develop the vaccine. He finally was able to create the vaccine, using formaldehyde, or a chemical compound. Salk used the killed Polio virus to immunize without being infected, or becoming infected after the injection. Soon after the vaccine was created, they began to test it on monkeys; and then they tested it on children who already had Polio at the Watson Institute. After that trial was done, the testing spread to volunteers who wanted the vaccine; this included Jonas, his wife, and his family. By 1954, national testing began on children between the ages of 6 9. On April 12, 1955, they were able to conclude that the vaccine was safe and effective. Salk became known as a miracle worker, although he remained selfless.
