Studying Apologetics
It has been such a pleasure taking your class and getting to know you this year. Your sense of sarcasm
and easy going nature always made class so enjoyable and fun! My faith has never been seriously
questioned so studying apologetics this year really changed my point of view concerning atheists and
why they believe there is no god. Thanks to you, I feel like I can more adequately defend my faith in
my next step in life. I feel like the most appropriate way to write this essay is to highlight a few
arguments and ideas that have stuck with me the most. Before this however, I would like to define
apologetics and why we study it. Apologetics is the intellectual argument for a belief such as the
existence of God. We are studying apologetics not to make others believe in God, but to be able to
defend our own belief in Him so that others arguments against his ... Show more content on

Many of the arguments that the authors deal with are arguments because of a lack of clear research
about the facts. One of these is the claim that the Jews were very hellenized due to astrological texts
which were forbidden by Jewish texts or zodiac symbols found in synagogues. While these things
might have been found, it does not mean that first century Palestinian Jews participated with these
things. In my opinion, there is no question that the Jesus story is historically accurate because all
evidence presented against this view is lacking. Living in my Christian bubble, personally, I have had
no one question my faith, but I m sure that will change once I go to college. I feel like apologetics has
helped me become more confident in why I am a Christian. Before, my Christian faith was purely
faith based. Now I can definitively say that I can look at in detail the difficult texts in the Bible, and
not just accept it because it is in the Bible, but because I know the background and the reasons for

Examples Of The Transcendentalism Movement
Introduction The transcendentalism movement is a prominent example that resulted in change and
revolution in human history. A literary, religious, political and philosophical movement,
transcendentalism started in the mid 1830s and challenged the traditional views of society, particularly
those related to the established churches. The origins of transcendentalism date back to sixteenth and
seventeenth century New England, when Puritanism first emerged as a call for furthering perfection of
the Protestant Reform (Bremer and Webster 13). Unitarians, successors of Puritans, also initiated the
transcendental movement and were conceived as mentors of many rising transcendentalists (Grodzins
1). Eventually, these rising transcendentalists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Origins of Transcendentalism The emergence of transcendentalism is largely attributed to the religious
reform movement of Puritanism that began in the late sixteenth century in New England. The
foundational beliefs of Puritanism paralleled with those of Calvinism, and strongly contrasts with
those of the transcendentalists. For example, the Puritans emphasized theocracy based on the bible, as
well as salvation, material wealth, and man s dominance over nature. Contrastingly, the
transcendentalists believed in democracy based on intuition, the simplification of every day life, and
man being one with nature. Unitarianism also gave rise to transcendentalism, as the Unitarian church
took more of an anti Calvinist approach which appealed to the transcendentalists. The founders of
transcendentalism were Unitarian intellectuals of the middle and upper classes of eastern
Massachusetts, who took a strong interest in moral reform. Initially, they looked to Unitarians as
teachers, however, they eventually challenged the important principles of the Unitarian church. These
transcendentalists not only challenged the Unitarian doctrines that were taught at Harvard Divinity
School, but they protested against the general aspects of society and intellectualism. Rather than
through logic and the doctrines of established religions, the transcendentalists believed that the
spiritual state can only be accomplished through one s

Character Of My Last Duchess
The situation seems ludicrous to the reader, because smiling at people does not seem a good enough
reason to be killed. This is a clear indication to the reader that the narrator is mad, and thus unreliable.
The portrayal of the duchess in the duke s words is also an important part of the poem, but the main
goal of My Last Duchess is the exploration of the mind of the speaker. The description of the duchess
makes clear that the duke is obviously not in his right mind. He does not gain any self knowledge by
the end of the poem: he blames others for their mistakes to disguise his own. The duke avoids self
examination and refuses to look at his faults, or even admit that he has faults. The painting of the
duchess portrays her as a sweet and innocent young woman, which contrasts with the personality of
her husband. The duke likes to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It turns the duchess into an object; she becomes something which he can dominate completely and
which will not embarrass or upset him. His life is care free with only the painting in his life, but still
he needs a wife. The duke seeks happiness in the ideal marriage, but it does not go as planned.
What Browning is doing in My Last Duchess is making a case for an immoral position. The dramatic
monologue is the perfect instrument for this, because of the tension between sympathy and moral
judgment. Those immoral positions are an act of free will of the characters. The fact that there is a
split between moral judgment and sympathy allows the reader to read the poem from the point of view
of the speaker, and even sympathies with him or her, but the reader does not have to adopt that point
of view or to agree with it.
So one could conclude that the duke is a character the reader prefers to identify him or herself with,
because he is such a refined, powerful man, even though he is not that refined

How I Remember Squatting In The Dust Analysis
The narrator starts the story lamenting on her past. She mentions the miserable state she has always
lived in, bringing up what is assumed to be the Great Depression. Our narrator has childhood
memories set during the Great Depression, an event lasting a decade from the late 1920s to late 1930s.
She states that she was fourteen approaching fifteen years old. The real variable is how long after her
anecdote does this story take place? She clearly expresses her dislike for the conditions in which she
grew up. She makes several comments on how herself and the black workers of rural Maryland would
be treated today. Probably written about and studied like a new species, when their state of poverty
and suffering was nothing new. The almost cynical voice used gives the impression ... Show more

Her diction is one of an educated adult, or at least a well spoken college student. She uses strong
imagery when describing her hometown. She goes into great detail in describing not only the look of
the setting, but the mood as well. Her recollections of the past that directly involve the main story are
short, but help build the world in which the story is being told. In paragraph eight Elizabeth says I
remember squatting in the road drawing a picture in the dust, a picture which Joey gleefully erased
with one sweep of his dirty foot. I remember fishing for minnows in a muddy creek and watching
sadly as they eluded my cupped hands, while Joey laughed uproariously as she remembers the past.
This is more than painting a picture for the audience. She uses physical descriptions as well as
conveying the setting through memories. You can almost feel her nostalgia for her younger innocent
days through the words. The memories described here are short, but give us examples of joy in her
youth. Juxtaposed to her other tellings of her childhood which seem mostly

Patrick Henry Allusion
Lawyer and Politician, Patrick Henry, in his speech, Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death (03/23/1775),
argues why they shouldn t sit there and wait and not do anything when war is coming. As well as not
letting it be, if they don t fight they ll become slaves of the British and he doesn t want that for the
people wanting them to fight for their freedom. He supports his claim by first going to the president
and letting him know that for their country they should take in consideration the war that s coming, his
personal belief is not to lay back, there is no backup with no time to waste, while questioning freedom
and slavery, him being a natural man he believes that illusion of hope is false, finally not being
dishonest with themselves and fight. Henry s purpose is to get themselves to stand up for their
freedom and not to become slaves, and not be under British ruling and keep what they have. He
implies an aggravated and raffle tone for the Second Virginia Convention, and the President. ... Show

Peru s Human Development Index Essay
During the majority of the nineteenth century, Peru had consistently struggled with a turbulent
political history, especially regarding its stability. The incapability of institutions to solidify, which
contributes the the lack of political stability, occurred from quick successions of government and
constant reforms within the political structure (Weeks, 2015). But regardless of Peru s record of
political instability, steps have been taken in the recent years to consolidate its democracy and reach
for economic policies that are market friendly.
Although Peru is a developing country, it has a high human development index that has been
strengthening over the years. According to the Human Development Reports from the United Nations
Development Programme, Peru s Human Development Index (HDI) ranking has increased from
approximately .6 in 1990 to .734 in 2014, and has retained this ranking the following year (UNDP,
2015). Peru is also rated at 2.5 out of 7 in freedom (Freedom House, 2015). As for human security,
Peru has a homicide rate of 9.6 per 100,000 people, which is nearly double the homicide rate of the
United States (UNDP, 2015). According to the same 2014 reports, Peru s ranking under the
Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is set as .043, meaning that 10.4% of the population falls
under multidimensional poverty, and 2.1% live under severe multidimensional poverty (UNDP, 2015).
From recent years, there has been a rise of demand for a final solution to income

How Far Do You Agree That Trotsky’s Leadership of the Red...
How far do you agree that Trotsky s leadership of the Red Army was responsible for the survival of
the Bolshevik government? (30 marks)
There were many factors that contributed to the survival of the Bolshevik Government, ranging from
Trotsky s leadership of the Red Army to the failings of the Bolsheviks rivals for power. This essay
shows that the main reason for the Bolsheviks continued survival through the period was not Trotsky s
great leadership of the Red Army, but the opposition s mistakes and failings. This will be
demonstrated by analysing the key factors leading to the survival of the Bolshevik Government:
Trotsky s leadership; Lenin s leadership; The Bolsheviks geographical advantage; and finally the
Bolsheviks enemies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Much of the strategy employed by Trotsky and his generals was designed to weaken the enemies
transport system so that they could not effectively organise and coordinate troop movements.
Therefore many battles took place near sections of train track and stations, which crippled many
enemy attacks and allowed the Bolsheviks to crush each attack and then move on, rather than fighting
on several fronts. This great strategy employed by Trotsky helped the Bolshevik Government survive,
and without Trotsky and his control of the Red Army, the Bolshevik Government would most likely
not have survived.
A further factor that contributed to the survival of the Bolshevik Government was Lenin s great
leadership of the whole Bolshevik party. At first glance, it appears as though Lenin played only a
small role during the Civil War because he remained in Moscow throughout, however, when looked at
more closely it can be seen that Lenin was a key decision maker. Lenin forced through the Treaty of
Brest Litovsk when many opposed it; he did this because he had promised peace to the public and he
needed their support to have any chance of winning the Civil War, and therefore helping the Bolshevik
Government survive.
Lenin also instigated the policy of War Communism, in which industry was

Summary Of Great Expectations Notes
Joseph Slovick Mr. Alsedek 535 02 1 February 2016 Great Expectations Notes Chapters 1 3: The
narrator introduces himself as Philip Pirrip, or Pip for short; the man in question effectively gave
himself this name when he could not pronounce his real name as an infant, managing only Pip. Pip
portrays himself as an impressionable child by telling the story of his encounter with an escaped
convict as a young boy. The shackled convict makes demands of young Pip then lets him go, leaving
Pip the option of seeking help from police or family, but Pip follows through on the demands the
convict gave. Perhaps if not impressionable, Pip is too compassionate for his own good. In addition to
himself and the convict, Pip also introduces his older sister and her husband, Mrs. Joe and Joe,
respectively. His sister is quite commanding, but her household, with Joe adding some compassion
and gentleness, pales in comparison to the surrounding marshes apparently overpopulated with
recently escaped convicts. Chapters 4 7: Pip furthers his portrayal as an impressionable,
compassionate individual by showing fear for both himself and his convict when a few police officers
barge into his home during dinner, though he calms down when they just ask Joe, a blacksmith, to
repair their handcuffs. His fret over being arrested himself can be excused as a normal human reaction,
but fearing for the convict he found hiding in the swamp shows a level or either undying compassion
or complete stupidity, and

Franz Beethoven Research Papers
Franz Schubert
Franz Schubert, one of my favorite classical composers, was born on 31 January 1797 in Vienna,
Austria, which is a well known city for classic music. And he has 14 brothers and sisters, one of them
was illegitimate, born in 1783 and nine of them were died in infancy. His father, Franz Theodor
Schubert was a well known teacher, and his school in Lichtental (ninth district in Vienna) had many
students in attendance. Though he wasn t even formally get his music trained, he passed on certain
musical gift to his son. When he was six year old, he began to given basic lesson from his father, and a
year later he enrolled to his father s school. His formal musical training started around the same time.
His father taught him very basic violin technique, and his brother Ignaz taught him piano technique.
When he was seven year old, Michael Holzer gave him first lessons outside the family, who is an

Beethoven whom he was admired during all his life. In 1872, a memorial to him was held in Stadtpark
Viena. In 1888, both his and Beethoven s graves moved to the Zentralfriedhof. My favorite song of his
is Ave Maria which is also the first piece that I heard from him. I considered that s one of the most
beautiful songs that I have ever heard. I will still enjoy it once a while. It isn t a complicated song but
such a magic melody and the piano accompaniment that can makes listener cry. There is also lot of
covers from past to now on for this song, and as a new composer, I might do my own in one

The Ethics Of Athletes Are Purely Physical
When you think of an athlete, who do you think of, Archie Griffin? Do you think about Olympians
such as Lindsey Vonn? The media makes us think that whenever we think of athletics, we imagine
large sport complexes and people running about and playing games we call sports. But, where do we
get this definition? Why do we think this way, who has set the precedent that athletes are purely
physical? Is this just a stereotype that needs to be broken?
Webster s American Dictionary defines an Athlete as a person who is trained or skilled in exercises,
sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina. The word originates from Middle
English, from the Latin word athleta, which further is from Greek athlētēs from athlein to contend for
a prize, from Athlon prize, contest. So basically, the word originates as someone who competes for a
prize, but the word has evolved to generally mean someone who does it in activities requiring physical
strength. However, why is this the way it is? Why is someone who trains and competes in a math
tournament, commonly referred to as a mathlete , not a true athlete, by definition?
A good way to approach this issue is to talk about what an athlete is not, before redefining what
exactly one is. Athletes, often times instead of gaining pleasure from logic puzzles or brain bending
activities (math or science), gain it from physical outlets such as sports. Traditionally, they play sports
such as football, basketball, soccer, baseball, and

The Importance Of Selfishness In Literature
Selfishness is defined as the act of being someone who lacks concern for others, only caring for
personal gain. Often, people are selfish due to a lack of empathy, misinformation, or a lack of
information. The ability of literature to have us experience different worlds through different
perspectives is fairly useful for combating this. In fact, literature can shock us about the idea of
selfishness and give us pause and new insights into it, if not necessarily cause us to realize our own
lack of selflessness and shock us out of it.
Literature is able to influence what we believe about the world. It is a very well known and well
documented phenomenon. Several studies and anecdotes have shown that people form a worldview

For instance, the 5th paragraph:
I want a wife who will not bother me with rambling complaints about a wife s duties. But I want a
wife who will listen to me when I feel the need to explain a rather difficult point I have come across in
my course of studies. And I want a wife who will type my papers for me when I have written them.
(Judy 5)
The entire article has this mockingly serious tone throughout, done in order to make it so that the
reader ponders about the mindset of a person who performs this blatant exploitation. This paragraph,
along with the rest of the article, shows just how utterly selfish the idea of the ideal wife is through its
use of a blunt voice and the author purposefully writing it as if it had a lack of irony and self
awareness. When I read this, I could tell exactly what she was talking about. She caused me to think
about a form of selfishness that exists in the world.
Additionally, what people read influences how they perceive the world. In turn, this influences what
and to whom they like and are sympathetic towards. I once needed to write a nonfiction essay for a
school assignment, and I choose to write about video games, specifically about their artistic potential
and about esports. I choose that subject since I love video games, and have amassed a wealth of

Movies As A Significant Role In The Entertainment Industry
According to Barbra Dozier s blog, movies play a significant role in the entertainment industry. They
are appealing to the viewer s eyes and ears because they combine both video and audio and they can
be watched at home, in theatres, and thanks to the latest technology one can even watch movies on the
go. Just like many individuals, I too spend my time watching movies as a form of entertainment. The
latest one I watched and enjoyed was a comedy named The House. Although the movie may have had
mediocre reviews, The House was still funny and enjoyable to watch. The plot and conflict revolve
around two struggling parents who cannot afford to send their sure to succeed daughter to college after
the town s scholarship program no longer had funding. As result the parents and a friend started an
illegal underground casino in his domicile in order to make money before the time to pay their
daughter s tuition came around. The rated R movie directed by Andrew Jay Cohen contains many well
known actors such as Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, and Jason Mantzoukas.
Although there were well known actors the movie revolved around three. Will Ferrell an American
actor and comedian known for playing the elf in Elf ,played the father Scott Johansen. Amy Poehler
plays Kate Johansen the mother and wife in the movie. Known for her role in the sitcom Parks of
Recreation, Poehler brings some of her comical characteristics to the movie making The House much
more enjoyable to watch. Jason Mantzoukas,

The History Of Lewis And Clark
The History of Lewis and Clark In 1803, shortly after the Louisiana Purchase, Thomas Jefferson, our
third US President sent two men, U.S. Army Captain Meriwether Lewis and William Clark out to
explore the unexplored west and in search of a water route across North America, fulfilling the dreams
of Thomas Jefferson in sending explorers across the America. Thomas Jefferson chose Meriwether
Lewis who was previously his secretary to lead the expedition. Thus being chosen to lead the
expedition, William Clark volunteered to assist Lewis on the journey. Working together on the
upcoming journey, it is clear that both these men made a great dynamic duo, Lewis being the one with
the scientific knowledge such as studying soil, animals, rock formations and the geography of the new
uncharted land and Clark mapping the course traveled and having a great military background. Before,
getting started on the actual expedition of Lewis and Clark, both men had been preparing for their
journey since around the fall of 1803 by obtaining the skills necessary for the trip. Prior to the big trip,
Lewis went to Philadelphia to study and learn more about science and also get the equipment
necessary for the trip. The main items bought in Philadelphia were scientific related equipment,
medicines, food, blankets, equipment for tent making, books for referencing and studying on the trip
and journals. Furthermore, Lewis also had gotten gifts for the Indians, in case they ever ran into any,

The House Of Dreams By La Casa Sognata
La Casa Sognata is translated as The House of Dreams . This is what my family named our home
located in Key Largo. When you walked into the house, it was like all of your worries and problems
disappeared. It really did feel like all of your dreams came true in that one moment. The amount of
amazing memories I have in just one place is unbelievable. From relaxing outside and watching the
sunset to tubing on the back of the wave runners. It was truly amazing. The house was bought in
tribute to my grandmother that passed away on new years eve in 2003. My uncle had her ashes placed
in a memorial and placed in the ocean behind the house. The memorial was situated behind the home
to the west, so the sun always set over her. The memorial was tied to a purple buoy with a wreath. On
new years eve, every year, we would spread flowers on her ashes. We would talk to her and then
celebrate her life in the most relaxing place. My uncle always envisioned a place where everyone
could get together and have the time of their lives, and it was a success. I remember the first time I
saw the house. It was like a mansion in paradise. It was a two story, four bedroom home with a guest
house connected to it. When I first arrived, there was a gate that I had to enter. I got out of the car and
there were beautiful flowers and palm trees leading to the house. On the wall there was a plaque that
had my grandmothers face engraved in it and it said mia bella madre . I kept walking, noticing that

Every year in the United States, more than 25 million animals partake in biomedical experimentation,

beneficial alternatives relating to the human species for which the drug is for, there lies a question of
why we continue to forfeit millions of innocent animal lives. Let alone being unwillingly imprisoned

Many drugs, medicines, and operations that could benefit humans may never be discovered, for they
produced no diagnosis in animal tests. Although drugs that fail in animal experiments rarely appear
tested on humans, there have been a few evident cases determined. For example, while Lipitor did not
appear promising in early stages of animal testing, a research scientist requested that a small group of
healthy human volunteers tested the drug, and only then was it found effective and useful. In many
instances, medical discoveries are delayed as researchers vainly waste time, money, effort, and animal
lives trying to create an animal model of a human disease (Aavs).
As well as inhumane treatment and delay of discovery existing as main flaws in animal testing, cost
plays a role just as large. An exceptional amount of animal cruelty is supported by the National
Institutes of Health, which designates 40% of their annual research budget and funding to animal
testing. Animal research and experimentation is a billion dollar industry, in which more money is lost
than gained. Animal importers, breeders, dealers, cage and equipment manufacturers, feed producers,
and drug companies spend a significant amount of money on procurement, handling, and upkeep of
animals (Neavs). While research founded from animals does not always promise useful results, it is

Statistics Purpose Statement
Statement of Purpose
Junru Xia
I first discovered my interest in statistics in my sophomore year at the University of California,
Berkeley. In a statistics lecture, the professor explained how statistics can be applied in real life by
giving an example that Amazon often promotes products by emailing its customers and recommending
products according to sophisticated analysis of customers search records, as well as their transaction
data. Previously having been immersed in the world of abstract statistics, I realized that in addition to
being an essential tool to confirm theories already proposed, data itself can lead to entirely new ideas.
The data patterns can be interpreted from many different perspectives, which triggered my eagerness
to explore the stories hidden in data and improve my understanding of the world through data analysis.
With a strong urge to enhance my quantitative foundation, I finished all my courses in mathematics

realized that rather than just about complicated methods, statistics was about simplifying and making
sense. Sufficient data and in depth analysis can not only help companies make valuable decisions, but
also enable us to understand real life in a more direct and precise way. As the trend of information
explosion is inevitable, I am sure that the power of data will become increasingly overwhelming, and
the role of data analysis will be indispensable. Therefore, along with my goal to pursue graduate

The Disconnection By Alice Walker
In Everyday Use Historical Criticisms explores the disconnection that people can sometimes have
depending on their education. Alice Walker successfully shows the disconnection by comparing two
ends of the spectrum of generation. Taking the historical context it plays a major role in the way this
short story is viewed. It was a time where people of color had a different and difficult experience
getting an education. When the narrator was talking about having an education it was important

these old quilts? I heard something fall in the kitchen, and a minute later the kitchen door slammed.
Why don t you take one of the others? No, said Wangero (Dee) I don t want those (Walker 292). Dee
wanted the quilts to have them hanging on the wall at her house to show her heritage and her culture.
In that short section it showed the difference of wanting to use the quilt as an everyday item as some
form of art to make a statement of showing how proud she was her heritage during a time where
colored people were oppressed. In the end of the story when Dee leaves after the argument and has a
dramatic exit while, her mother and Maggie just sit outside until bedtime, which showed the
difference of the older generation and new. On one side there is a passive approach and then there is
the new generation which is demonstrated as being a fighter, and fighting for what you believe until
you get what you want or at least try. One main focus in this story is heritage and the different value is

Summary Of The Art Of Living Consciously By Nathaniel Branden
In 1999, Nathaniel Branden published a very influential book called The Art of Living Consciously.
This book discussed various ways one can build their self esteem. This is one of many of Branden s
books on self esteem but this one is focusing on the aspect of living consciously. He promotes this as
the idea of living consciously as a healthy aspect of self esteem in a person s mental abilities and
respect for reality. He applies his theory of living consciously to specific aspects of life such as
relationships, parenting, and in the workplace. Branden portrays his ideas in a very approachable way,
many of his sentences seem somewhat open ended so you can you relate it your everyday life. For

very simple task but one that would require some discipline. One of the interesting aspects of Branden

the reader ask themselves questions like How can we be more conscious in this area? and How can we
tell we are doing right? This helps the reader feel more connected with his writing. They may be able
to envision how they can live more conscious and their life and become more aware of how to living
this way. Some of the topics Branden really highlighted throughout his book was the importance of
reason and the commitment of awareness. But he s does this in such a desirable approach, he does not
try to validate his points instead he examines life starting from child and shows how things in life
could have affected your way to practice the principles to live in this state. He writes about the lives of
himself and other involved in his life and puts us in situations showing that to be more aware of the
reality around you can make yourself stand out to others who bury themselves in unconsciousness. Yet
his way of displaying this message is so approachable because he discourages the common idea that
reason rather than experience is the key to knowledge and he also speaks to you through your
experiences that really make you think. This really helps bring the reader closer to the experience
Branden is try to put forth and the stories, exercises and discussions really help portray that message.
Instead of describing the good life, he invites us into discover this life for ourselves which

Heights Is Good For The Jews By George J. Sanchez
The assigned readings offered an engaging view of the new suburban life emerging in California
during the postwar years of the 1940s and 1950s. During this time, California was becoming heavily
populated and was experiencing an increased demand for housing. In Holy Land, D.J. Waldie
discussed the rise of the suburbs in Southern California, the creation of tract housing and shopping
centers, and the 1950s illusion that everyone could be middle class (Waldie, 4 85). As suburban areas
were developing and emerging within Southern California, a neighborhood was challenging the
conservative norm of the time by allowing racial diversity within the area. In What s Good for Boyle
Heights is Good for the Jews, George J. Sánchez s tells the forgotten history of Boyle Heights, a
suburb of Los Angeles, praised for being one of America s first communities to embrace racial
diversity. During a time of severe bigotry against African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latino
Americas, Jewish residents of Boyle Heights were able to respect and accept minorities of color living
within their community (Sánchez, 633 657). The postwar years in California demonstrated the
extraordinary power the state had in developing suburbs and how a small district within the Los
Angeles area was able to challenge the status quo on racial diversity.
I was intrigued to read George J. Sánchez s What s Good for Boyle Heights is Good for the Jews for
its social and racial significance. For example, in the

Waiting For The Barbarians Analysis
Coetzee writes Waiting for the Barbarians through the point of view of the Magistrate of an unnamed
Empire. The Empire resembles a colonialist regime that views itself as both superior to and in
opposition with the neighboring barbarians. At first, the Magistrate is largely oblivious to the violence
and torture carried out by officers of the Empire, believing that Colonel Joll finds out the truth about
the barbarians (4). The Magistrate treats the line between truth and falsehood as clear and absolute,
something that can be thoroughly investigated and uncovered. However, his view changes when he
hears Colonel Joll describe that first [he] get[s] lies, you see this is what happens first lies, then
pressure, then more lies, then more pressure, then the break, then more pressure, then the truth. That is
how you get the truth (6). While the Magistrate initially believes in Joll s work, it quickly becomes
apparent that Colonel Joll is interested in a specific version of the truth. He treats the barbarian
subjects as objects and uses them as a means to an end, with the belief that truth is reached through the
application of the greatest possible pain. After extreme torture, the barbarians become willing to admit
to Joll whatever he designates as the truth and reaffirm his hypotheses. The power dynamic between
the officers of the Empire and the barbarians renders this method of discovery both immoral and
inaccurate. The novel centers around the relationship between the

Outline the Structure of the Main Tissues of the Body.
P2: Outline the structure of the main tissues of the body.
In this assignment I m going to talk about the structure of the main tissues which are found within the
body as well as what their role is in the terms of two named organs of the body. Tissues are a
collection of similar cells that group together to carry out a specific function within the body. There
are four different types of tissue found in the human body which include; epithelial tissue; connective
tissue; muscle tissue and nerve tissue.
The first type of tissue found in the human body is epithelial tissue. These types of tissue are found
covering the whole surface of the body, lining of cavities, hollow organs and tubes. The cells a very
closely packed and are arranged in one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Transitional epithelium is also composed of several layers but is constructive of pear shaped cells
instead. This type of tissue is stretchy, meaning it can contract and expand. It is usually found lining
the urinary bladder as it allows for stretching as the bladder fills up.
The second type of tissue found in the body is connective tissue. They lie beneath the epithelial tissue
helping to connect different part of the internal structure, the cells are more widely separated from
each other then in epithelial tissue. The intercellular substance known as the matrix is found in
considerably large amounts. Within the matrix there are usually fibres which may be a jelly like
consistency or dense and rigid depending on the type, function and positioning of the tissue. Theses
fibres form a supporting system for cells to attach to. The major functions of connective tissue are to
transport materials, give structural support and protection. The types of connective tissue that will be
explained are blood, bone, cartilage, bone, areolar tissue and adipose tissue.
Blood is made up of straw coloured plasma, the matrix, in which various types of blood are carried.
Plasma is mainly water where substances are carried such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, nutrients
such as glucose and amino acids, salts, enzymes and hormones. Also there is a combination of
important proteins which help with blood clotting, transport,

Free Will vs. Determinism Essay
Picture yourself in line in the cafeteria, you have two main dishes to choose from: pizza or a plate of
fierce looking meatloaf, so you decide to go with pizza. So was your decision based off of free will or
was this decision predetermined? To fully understand whether your actions resulted from free will or
determinism, we must first define each. Determinism is the idea that everything happens due to a
cause or a determinant, which is something that can be observed or measured. To put it simply,
determinism does not mean that the future can be predicted. Rather, it is a prediction of the possible
outcomes that may occur. To help predict outcomes we use facts, knowledge, and previous
experiences (Ott, par. 4). Free will, on the other hand, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We believe the choices we make can be made randomly if we so choose. People who believe in free
will don t understand which of our actions are free and which actions are simply illusions. This gap in
our perception, of what is free and what is just an illusion, is free will. Free will is deceiving because
we have no free will at all except in one thing, but besides that one thing, all that we do is dictated by
inner and outer nature. My purpose in writing this paper is to persuade individuals to stop placating
their egotism by believing in pseudo philosophical ideas. In order to discover where our freedom
really lies we need to look at a level of life below ours to understand the factors that are employed.
The first factor is our ancestral information, the information already embedded within us from birth.
To understand what this concept means, picture a seed of wheat. In your mind, take that seed of wheat
and bury it into the soil. As days go by it will slowly decompose. The body of the seed will disappear,
but the information on the qualities that are going to develop does not die. What happens is, the old
form transforms into a new form but the new form will still retain all the original information. That
information is the leading cause for everything that follows. Likewise, a drop of semen contains the
abstract information from our ancestors. We come into the world with

Sour Dough Diet
Many Americans love the delicious, yet fattening, carbohydrate recognized as bread. Usually, we all
eat bread when it is stuffed with meat and cheese, but most can t resist the taste of certain breads
without the added accompaniments. Sour Dough bread, being a popular favorite, is most commonly
made by preparing your starter dough, feeding the starter dough, then finally kneading and baking the
loaves. The first step is making the starter dough. Before starting, make sure you have a large, non
metallic bowl for mixing. Making sure your bowls are non metallic ensures that the dough will not
ruin. Mix together dry yeast, two cups of warm water, and two cups of all purpose flour. Once you
have mixed all of your ingredients, obtain the mix with a loose seal and leave the starter dough in a
warm place to ferment for four to eight days and check on it occasionally. Making sure the bread is
well fermented will improve the quality of the dough. Once the days have passed, the mixture is

Neoconservative And Discrimination Against Gays And...
People may not notice little things that others do or say. Something as small as calling someone gay
because they identify themselves as homosexual, could emotionally traumatize them. Examples of
these issues are LGBTQ+ working in a labour intensive employment, and is treated as weak or unfit
for the position, thus being looked down upon. For centuries, people follow the stereotype that people
of a different gender or sexual identity are looked down upon and considered outliers of the society.
Our group will go in depth and demonstrate examples of discrimination against LGBTQ+ in the
workforce, by first analyzing the root of this problem. A few questions that we will evaluating are: if
people dislike LGBTQ+ in the workforce because they are homosexuals, or because they are lacking
in skill, education, experience etc. Second question that ties with the root of the issue is to find out
why majority of people discriminate individuals that identify as LGBTQ+ homosexuals. Lastly, our
group will be explaining different point of views of this issue. We will be using a variety of
frameworks that we have learned in class such as viewing the social problem with a Neoliberal,
Neoconservative and transformative outlook to analyze the social problem. Topics that we can analyze
using these frameworks, include who is at fault or who is to blame within the social problem, how
each framework would try to resolve the social problem, and what are some things that each
framework can do

The Shroud Of Turin Analysis
The Shroud of Turin is a centuries old linen cloth bearing the image of a man who appears to have
suffered from physical harm in a fashion resembling Roman crucifixion. This image, in accordance

indecision over its authenticity. Science has not yet come to a conclusion on the legitimacy of the

Frederick Zugibe examined the Shroud and how accurately the injuries matched the process of
crucifixion. He looked at how the nails were driven through the hands and feet. The shroud shows a
pool of blood near the one visible wrist and the feet looked punctured as if by one nail. Also, as the
romans strike the nail into each hand, the nerve damage causes the thumb to twist inward and under
the palms. A thorough examination of the shroud revealed exactly this. The thumbs were hidden
underneath the palms, just as one would expect. The facial imprint wasn t symmetrical and showed
signs of a beating.
Blood flowing from small cuts that seeped into the material made by the crown of thorns accurately
matched the trail the liquid would follow when the forehead muscles contract in pain. Lacerations
covered the back and a pool of blood was identified in the upper side of the torso, with blood flowing
down from that place. All these injuries were consistent with Jesus described execution. Zugibe stated
that from the Forensic Pathology point of view, it is totally consistent with a crucified individual. I

Antithetical Approach To Marriage In The Duchess Of Malfi
Webster has depicted an antithetical approach to marriage within his Senecan play, The Duchess of
Malfi. The play was written in the Jacobean era which, at the time, was a patriarchal society and so by
creating a dominant female protagonist, who did just about whatever she pleased Webster has
managed to incorporate a semantic field of death and pain to fit alongside his juxtapositions of a
typical Jacobean marriage.
To begin, Webster uses the idea of marriage being equal to ownership and power over another. As a
widow the Duchess has the potential to wield power independently of a husband and sever her
allegiances to other male kin, for instance her misogynistic brothers. The first way she exerts this
power is through her declarative marriage proposal to Antonio a young widow// That claims you for
her husband . Through the use of the transitive verb claims Webster has made the Duchess seem
strong and dominant, asserting her power of high blood over the steward Antonio. This power scares
Antonio, understandably so, as his role in a marriage would usually be the dominating one and
typically the husband owned the wife, specifically through the law of feme covert , so far, we see that
the Duchess tries to draw Antonio up to her level of status thus aligning with feme covert (her legal
identity is being subsumed by him). However, Antonio does fear this You do tremble: Make not your
heart so dead a piece of flesh and is therefore intimidated by the assertive Duchess.

In most cases, atrial fibrillation can end up in a larger left atria and pulmonary veins. Subsequently,
structural and functional changes happens within the heart in terms of size and shape which is called
cardiac remodelling. The initial phase is very important as that is when the the lost stabilities are
restored. Thereafter, if the action still goes on, massive changes happens in heart chambers, cardiac
function gets worse and eventually cardiac failure emerges. IN addition to all the above,
thromboembolism can be simply said as the clot formation in blood vessels which breaks and
obstructs another blood vessel. A thrombus can appear either in veins or in arteries. If it is not treated
properly by anticoagulants, stroke is the end result. Stroke can be categorized into three: ischaemic,
haemorrhagic and TIA or mini stroke. In ischemic stroke, blood circulation to the brain is deteriorated
followed by an obstruction in the blood vessel whereas haemorrhagic stroke is a result of bleeding in
the brain followed by the breakage of blood vessels. Age and cardio vascular disorders especially
hypercoagulable states are the precipitating factors for the former whereas high blood pressure and
aneurysms are the factors for latter. Mostly, TIA occur as a result of narrowing of vessels. If it is not
treated by anticoagulants at the very beginning, there is a high risk of developing stroke by means of
more occlusion in the blood vessel or the rupture. So,

Proteins And Its Effect On Human Body
Proteins are one of the most important biological molecules in the body; they make up more than 50%
of the dry mass in human body cells. Their simple structure can be described as amino acid polymers
as they are made up of many amino acid monomers stringed together in a linear fashion, which then
gives rise to more complex structures, as various bonding and manipulation takes place. The name
protein comes from the Greek word meaning holding first place which supports the fact that they are
essential to life. Proteins, depending on their structure and where they are found, play very different
roles in an organism. One of the main types of proteins are enzymes which act as biological catalysts,
and are fundamental to the chemical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An amino acid is made up of a carbon atom in the centre (known as the  carbon), a carboxyl group,
amino group, a hydrogen atom and an R group (figure 1). The R group is the section of the amino acid
that determines its chemical properties. In glycine, the R group is hydrogen. Some of the amino acids
have R groups that are hydrophobic and some have R groups that are hydrophilic and this often
determines how the protein folds into its tertiary structure and also where they can be found within the
cell. It is the sequence of these amino acids that determines the type of protein that is made. Amino
acids join to form proteins in a process known as protein synthesis where a gene is expressed to
produce a polypeptide chain. After the genetic code has been translated from the DNA in the nucleus,
the resulting mRNA is transcribed into a polypeptide in the cytoplasm of the cell. The mRNA binds to
a ribosome and has 3 base pairs exposed called a codon. The anticodon of a tRNA molecule can then
bind to the codon as it has complementary base pairs, and it carries with it an amino acid. The first
amino acid in the chain is always methionine. When a second tRNA, carrying a different amino acid
arrives and binds, a peptide bond forms between the two amino acids and the resulting product is a
dipeptide molecule two amino acids joined together. This process continues and as more amino acids
are joined together by peptide

Freedom of Humanity Depends on the Connection with Nature
The Bear is a book written in 1942 by William Faulkner that deals with the life of an ancient bear
named Old Ben. Old Ben affects the lives of most hunters that know him, and most importantly it he
has a great influence on Ike and the wilderness. The Bear is not only about the life of Old Ben, but it is
also about the wilderness, racism, possession of land, and the meaning of humanity. The interpretation
of wilderness Faulkner present in his book is that the forest represents an essential connection among
liberty and humanity (Radloff). Through allusion, William Faulkner uses imagery and symbolism to
connect liberty and humanity with the wilderness. William Faulkner, with the successful use of
imagery, explains that the only way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On this occasion, Old Ben [does] not emerge, appear: it [is] just there, immobile, fixed in the green

chooses to have the posture of a man (LaBudde 227). Even though Ike is scared of the bear (Faulkner
200), because of the bond that he shares with Old Ben, he is not afraid to go into the wilderness
[without] the gun by his own [free] will (Faulkner 200). The importance of Ike s connection with the

William Faulkner with the use of symbolism of land successfully explains that humans cannot truly

vicious cycle of abuse of land (Vickery 210). This means that [God] created man to be his overseer on
the earth (Faulkner 247). He did not create humans to become owners of land. During Ike s lifetime,
the sin that was originally present during the generation of [Ike s] grandfather and then his father
(Faulkner 251) tries to claim possession of the lands that do not officially belong to it. Since Ike has a
better understanding of nature, he feels in his heart that the possession of nature is simply impossible
by man (Breaden 273).

After Knee Replacement Surgery
How Home Health Care Helps You After Knee Replacement Surgery
If you re going to have knee replacement surgery, you should expect to have trouble getting around
well enough to take care of yourself for several days after the procedure. While you ll be in the
hospital a few days, once you ve recovered from the actual surgery, you will be discharged to recover
in a nursing facility or at home. If you don t have family to help you, hiring home health care will
allow you to return home to your familiar surroundings to recuperate. Here why a home health care
service is beneficial.
Supervise Medications
You ll be in pain after your knee surgery, and you ll probably be sent home on pain medications to
keep you comfortable. If the medications make you groggy, you may develop irregular sleeping
patterns that interfere with taking other medications on schedule. If you need to take antibiotics or
medications for a condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, you need to take the drugs on
time. A home health nurse or aide will make sure you take your medications on time. He or she can

driver licenses or other transportation methods and consequently have to go with an adult only when
the adults have free time. Furthermore, students can buy things in seconds in special online programs
such as Amazon s 1 Click Checkout and get it shipped before they need to use it for school. They do
not have to look for class material in the bookstore when it is crowded in the beginning of the school
year and have to wait for a long line. The last reason that teens tend to shop online instead of shopping
in stores even if they favor to do the second is because of their purchasing power. As suggested by
POPAI, while the tweens drive demand, parents are the real buyers (Smith 5). There are many things
that teens want, but since many teenagers do not have jobs, the most reasonable source of their

Chili Con Carne Research Paper
Chili con carne or Texas Red chili has been declared the official state dish of Texas. Texans are well
known for their strong opposition to chili made with beans. While some regional varieties of chili
include and even focus on beans, Texas chili is made from stewed meat and chili peppers, giving the
dish its Spanish name, chili con carne (literally: chili peppers with meat).
Chili con carne is said to have been created by immigrants from the Canary Islands as far back as
1723. They incorporated the native peppers, onions, garlic, and spices like oregano to create a dish
similar to one from their homeland, where a similar chili pepper grew. The dish evolved when cattle
drivers began to add fresh meat they hunted along the way, which was anything

manner, they aren t connected or linked with one another but looking at the bigger picture, you realize
that they are connected in a much less considerable way. Except the further I go into both of their
readings, the larger the effort I put into struggling with their problems, the more I distinguish the weak
trail of a connection here, a minor commonality there; the more I break the ideas and become aware of
the nearly unnoticeable thread of a relation connecting these two apparently unequal ideas. Ultimately,
this doesn t denote that I can plainly write anything or declare any relation among both of them. It still
requires rationalizing my creativity as well as my vision, spot the verifications and evidence to
completely shore up my hypothesis. In the end, if I am adequately troubled and engaged, a case can
perhaps be ready for several kinds of comparative analysis between Heidegger and ... Show more

Wittgenstein states: Philosophy must not interfere in any way with the actual use of language, so it can
in the end only describe it. For it cannot justify it either. It leaves everything as it is (Philosophical
Investigations §124). The same goes for Heidegger when he states this about what philosophy is; To
let what shows itself to be seen from itself, just as it shows itself from itself (Being and Time p.58) It
is essential to argue Heidegger s concepts of everydayness and worldliness, and Wittgenstein s notion
of phenomenological representation and language, which is most plainly demonstrated in his
separation between description and explanation. Undoubtedly, there is not a full similarity, there is no
direct correspondence, but the connections that do appear to be there are to some extent exciting and

  • 2. Studying Apologetics It has been such a pleasure taking your class and getting to know you this year. Your sense of sarcasm and easy going nature always made class so enjoyable and fun! My faith has never been seriously questioned so studying apologetics this year really changed my point of view concerning atheists and why they believe there is no god. Thanks to you, I feel like I can more adequately defend my faith in my next step in life. I feel like the most appropriate way to write this essay is to highlight a few arguments and ideas that have stuck with me the most. Before this however, I would like to define apologetics and why we study it. Apologetics is the intellectual argument for a belief such as the existence of God. We are studying apologetics not to make others believe in God, but to be able to defend our own belief in Him so that others arguments against his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of the arguments that the authors deal with are arguments because of a lack of clear research about the facts. One of these is the claim that the Jews were very hellenized due to astrological texts which were forbidden by Jewish texts or zodiac symbols found in synagogues. While these things might have been found, it does not mean that first century Palestinian Jews participated with these things. In my opinion, there is no question that the Jesus story is historically accurate because all evidence presented against this view is lacking. Living in my Christian bubble, personally, I have had no one question my faith, but I m sure that will change once I go to college. I feel like apologetics has helped me become more confident in why I am a Christian. Before, my Christian faith was purely faith based. Now I can definitively say that I can look at in detail the difficult texts in the Bible, and not just accept it because it is in the Bible, but because I know the background and the reasons for what is ... • 3. Examples Of The Transcendentalism Movement Introduction The transcendentalism movement is a prominent example that resulted in change and revolution in human history. A literary, religious, political and philosophical movement, transcendentalism started in the mid 1830s and challenged the traditional views of society, particularly those related to the established churches. The origins of transcendentalism date back to sixteenth and seventeenth century New England, when Puritanism first emerged as a call for furthering perfection of the Protestant Reform (Bremer and Webster 13). Unitarians, successors of Puritans, also initiated the transcendental movement and were conceived as mentors of many rising transcendentalists (Grodzins 1). Eventually, these rising transcendentalists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Origins of Transcendentalism The emergence of transcendentalism is largely attributed to the religious reform movement of Puritanism that began in the late sixteenth century in New England. The foundational beliefs of Puritanism paralleled with those of Calvinism, and strongly contrasts with those of the transcendentalists. For example, the Puritans emphasized theocracy based on the bible, as well as salvation, material wealth, and man s dominance over nature. Contrastingly, the transcendentalists believed in democracy based on intuition, the simplification of every day life, and man being one with nature. Unitarianism also gave rise to transcendentalism, as the Unitarian church took more of an anti Calvinist approach which appealed to the transcendentalists. The founders of transcendentalism were Unitarian intellectuals of the middle and upper classes of eastern Massachusetts, who took a strong interest in moral reform. Initially, they looked to Unitarians as teachers, however, they eventually challenged the important principles of the Unitarian church. These transcendentalists not only challenged the Unitarian doctrines that were taught at Harvard Divinity School, but they protested against the general aspects of society and intellectualism. Rather than through logic and the doctrines of established religions, the transcendentalists believed that the spiritual state can only be accomplished through one s ... • 4. Character Of My Last Duchess The situation seems ludicrous to the reader, because smiling at people does not seem a good enough reason to be killed. This is a clear indication to the reader that the narrator is mad, and thus unreliable. The portrayal of the duchess in the duke s words is also an important part of the poem, but the main goal of My Last Duchess is the exploration of the mind of the speaker. The description of the duchess makes clear that the duke is obviously not in his right mind. He does not gain any self knowledge by the end of the poem: he blames others for their mistakes to disguise his own. The duke avoids self examination and refuses to look at his faults, or even admit that he has faults. The painting of the duchess portrays her as a sweet and innocent young woman, which contrasts with the personality of her husband. The duke likes to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It turns the duchess into an object; she becomes something which he can dominate completely and which will not embarrass or upset him. His life is care free with only the painting in his life, but still he needs a wife. The duke seeks happiness in the ideal marriage, but it does not go as planned. What Browning is doing in My Last Duchess is making a case for an immoral position. The dramatic monologue is the perfect instrument for this, because of the tension between sympathy and moral judgment. Those immoral positions are an act of free will of the characters. The fact that there is a split between moral judgment and sympathy allows the reader to read the poem from the point of view of the speaker, and even sympathies with him or her, but the reader does not have to adopt that point of view or to agree with it. • 5. How I Remember Squatting In The Dust Analysis The narrator starts the story lamenting on her past. She mentions the miserable state she has always lived in, bringing up what is assumed to be the Great Depression. Our narrator has childhood memories set during the Great Depression, an event lasting a decade from the late 1920s to late 1930s. She states that she was fourteen approaching fifteen years old. The real variable is how long after her anecdote does this story take place? She clearly expresses her dislike for the conditions in which she grew up. She makes several comments on how herself and the black workers of rural Maryland would be treated today. Probably written about and studied like a new species, when their state of poverty and suffering was nothing new. The almost cynical voice used gives the impression ... He supports his claim by first going to the president and letting him know that for their country they should take in consideration the war that s coming, his personal belief is not to lay back, there is no backup with no time to waste, while questioning freedom and slavery, him being a natural man he believes that illusion of hope is false, finally not being dishonest with themselves and fight. The incapability of institutions to solidify, which contributes the the lack of political stability, occurred from quick successions of government and constant reforms within the political structure (Weeks, 2015). But regardless of Peru s record of political instability, steps have been taken in the recent years to consolidate its democracy and reach for economic policies that are market friendly. Although Peru is a developing country, it has a high human development index that has been strengthening over the years. According to the Human Development Reports from the United Nations Development Programme, Peru s Human Development Index (HDI) ranking has increased from approximately .6 in 1990 to .734 in 2014, and has retained this ranking the following year (UNDP, 2015). (30 marks) There were many factors that contributed to the survival of the Bolshevik Government, ranging from Trotsky s leadership of the Red Army to the failings of the Bolsheviks rivals for power. This essay shows that the main reason for the Bolsheviks continued survival through the period was not Trotsky s great leadership of the Red Army, but the opposition s mistakes and failings. This will be demonstrated by analysing the key factors leading to the survival of the Bolshevik Government: Trotsky s leadership; Lenin s leadership; The Bolsheviks geographical advantage; and finally the Bolsheviks enemies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Much of the strategy employed by Trotsky and his generals was designed to weaken the enemies transport system so that they could not effectively organise and coordinate troop movements. Therefore many battles took place near sections of train track and stations, which crippled many enemy attacks and allowed the Bolsheviks to crush each attack and then move on, rather than fighting on several fronts. This great strategy employed by Trotsky helped the Bolshevik Government survive, and without Trotsky and his control of the Red Army, the Bolshevik Government would most likely not have survived. A further factor that contributed to the survival of the Bolshevik Government was Lenin s great leadership of the whole Bolshevik party. At first glance, it appears as though Lenin played only a small role during the Civil War because he remained in Moscow throughout, however, when looked at more closely it can be seen that Lenin was a key decision maker. Lenin forced through the Treaty of Brest Litovsk when many opposed it; he did this because he had promised peace to the public and he needed their support to have any chance of winning the Civil War, and therefore helping the Bolshevik Government survive. Summary Of Great Expectations Notes Joseph Slovick Mr. Alsedek 535 02 1 February 2016 Great Expectations Notes Chapters 1 3: The narrator introduces himself as Philip Pirrip, or Pip for short; the man in question effectively gave himself this name when he could not pronounce his real name as an infant, managing only Pip. Pip portrays himself as an impressionable child by telling the story of his encounter with an escaped convict as a young boy. The shackled convict makes demands of young Pip then lets him go, leaving Pip the option of seeking help from police or family, but Pip follows through on the demands the convict gave. Perhaps if not impressionable, Pip is too compassionate for his own good. In addition to himself and the convict, Pip also introduces his older sister and her husband, Mrs. Joe and Joe, respectively. His sister is quite commanding, but her household, with Joe adding some compassion and gentleness, pales in comparison to the surrounding marshes apparently overpopulated with recently escaped convicts. Chapters 4 7: Pip furthers his portrayal as an impressionable, compassionate individual by showing fear for both himself and his convict when a few police officers barge into his home during dinner, though he calms down when they just ask Joe, a blacksmith, to repair their handcuffs. His fret over being arrested himself can be excused as a normal human reaction, but fearing for the convict he found hiding in the swamp shows a level or either undying compassion or complete stupidity, and ... • 11. The Ethics Of Athletes Are Purely Physical When you think of an athlete, who do you think of, Archie Griffin? Do you think about Olympians such as Lindsey Vonn? The media makes us think that whenever we think of athletics, we imagine large sport complexes and people running about and playing games we call sports. But, where do we get this definition? Why do we think this way, who has set the precedent that athletes are purely physical? Is this just a stereotype that needs to be broken? Webster s American Dictionary defines an Athlete as a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina. The word originates from Middle English, from the Latin word athleta, which further is from Greek athlētēs from athlein to contend for a prize, from Athlon prize, contest. So basically, the word originates as someone who competes for a prize, but the word has evolved to generally mean someone who does it in activities requiring physical strength. However, why is this the way it is? Why is someone who trains and competes in a math tournament, commonly referred to as a mathlete , not a true athlete, by definition? A good way to approach this issue is to talk about what an athlete is not, before redefining what exactly one is. Athletes, often times instead of gaining pleasure from logic puzzles or brain bending activities (math or science), gain it from physical outlets such as sports. Traditionally, they play sports such as football, basketball, soccer, baseball, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The amount of amazing memories I have in just one place is unbelievable. From relaxing outside and watching the sunset to tubing on the back of the wave runners. It was truly amazing. The house was bought in tribute to my grandmother that passed away on new years eve in 2003. My uncle had her ashes placed in a memorial and placed in the ocean behind the house. The memorial was situated behind the home to the west, so the sun always set over her. The memorial was tied to a purple buoy with a wreath. One of the interesting aspects of Branden s work is that he walks us through situations we would encounter in our everyday lives and then has the reader ask themselves questions like How can we be more conscious in this area? and How can we tell we are doing right? This helps the reader feel more connected with his writing. They may be able to envision how they can live more conscious and their life and become more aware of how to living this way. Waldie discussed the rise of the suburbs in Southern California, the creation of tract housing and shopping centers, and the 1950s illusion that everyone could be middle class (Waldie, 4 85). The Empire resembles a colonialist regime that views itself as both superior to and in opposition with the neighboring barbarians. The Magistrate treats the line between truth and falsehood as clear and absolute, something that can be thoroughly investigated and uncovered. That is how you get the truth (6). While the Magistrate initially believes in Joll s work, it quickly becomes apparent that Colonel Joll is interested in a specific version of the truth. He treats the barbarian subjects as objects and uses them as a means to an end, with the belief that truth is reached through the application of the greatest possible pain. After extreme torture, the barbarians become willing to admit to Joll whatever he designates as the truth and reaffirm his hypotheses. • 27. Free Will vs. Determinism Essay Picture yourself in line in the cafeteria, you have two main dishes to choose from: pizza or a plate of fierce looking meatloaf, so you decide to go with pizza. So was your decision based off of free will or was this decision predetermined? To fully understand whether your actions resulted from free will or determinism, we must first define each. Determinism is the idea that everything happens due to a cause or a determinant, which is something that can be observed or measured. To put it simply, determinism does not mean that the future can be predicted. Rather, it is a prediction of the possible outcomes that may occur. To help predict outcomes we use facts, knowledge, and previous experiences (Ott, par. 4). Free will, on the other hand, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We believe the choices we make can be made randomly if we so choose. People who believe in free will don t understand which of our actions are free and which actions are simply illusions. This gap in our perception, of what is free and what is just an illusion, is free will. Free will is deceiving because we have no free will at all except in one thing, but besides that one thing, all that we do is dictated by inner and outer nature. My purpose in writing this paper is to persuade individuals to stop placating their egotism by believing in pseudo philosophical ideas. In order to discover where our freedom really lies we need to look at a level of life below ours to understand the factors that are employed. The first factor is our ancestral information, the information already embedded within us from birth. To understand what this concept means, picture a seed of wheat. In your mind, take that seed of wheat and bury it into the soil. As days go by it will slowly decompose. The body of the seed will disappear, but the information on the qualities that are going to develop does not die. What happens is, the old form transforms into a new form but the new form will still retain all the original information. That information is the leading cause for everything that follows. Likewise, a drop of semen contains the abstract information from our ancestors. We come into the world with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Something as small as calling someone gay because they identify themselves as homosexual, could emotionally traumatize them. Examples of these issues are LGBTQ+ working in a labour intensive employment, and is treated as weak or unfit for the position, thus being looked down upon. For centuries, people follow the stereotype that people of a different gender or sexual identity are looked down upon and considered outliers of the society. Our group will go in depth and demonstrate examples of discrimination against LGBTQ+ in the workforce, by first analyzing the root of this problem. A few questions that we will evaluating are: if people dislike LGBTQ+ in the workforce because they are homosexuals, or because they are lacking in skill, education, experience etc. Second question that ties with the root of the issue is to find out why majority of people discriminate individuals that identify as LGBTQ+ homosexuals. Lastly, our group will be explaining different point of views of this issue. We will be using a variety of frameworks that we have learned in class such as viewing the social problem with a Neoliberal, Neoconservative and transformative outlook to analyze the social problem. Topics that we can analyze using these frameworks, include who is at fault or who is to blame within the social problem, how each framework would try to resolve the social problem, and what are some things that each framework can do ... The thumbs were hidden underneath the palms, just as one would expect. The facial imprint wasn t symmetrical and showed signs of a beating. • 33. Antithetical Approach To Marriage In The Duchess Of Malfi Webster has depicted an antithetical approach to marriage within his Senecan play, The Duchess of Malfi. The play was written in the Jacobean era which, at the time, was a patriarchal society and so by creating a dominant female protagonist, who did just about whatever she pleased Webster has managed to incorporate a semantic field of death and pain to fit alongside his juxtapositions of a typical Jacobean marriage. To begin, Webster uses the idea of marriage being equal to ownership and power over another. As a widow the Duchess has the potential to wield power independently of a husband and sever her allegiances to other male kin, for instance her misogynistic brothers. The first way she exerts this power is through her declarative marriage proposal to Antonio a young widow// That claims you for her husband . Through the use of the transitive verb claims Webster has made the Duchess seem strong and dominant, asserting her power of high blood over the steward Antonio. This power scares Antonio, understandably so, as his role in a marriage would usually be the dominating one and typically the husband owned the wife, specifically through the law of feme covert , so far, we see that the Duchess tries to draw Antonio up to her level of status thus aligning with feme covert (her legal identity is being subsumed by him). However, Antonio does fear this You do tremble: Make not your heart so dead a piece of flesh and is therefore intimidated by the assertive Duchess. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Proteins And Its Effect On Human Body Proteins are one of the most important biological molecules in the body; they make up more than 50% of the dry mass in human body cells. Their simple structure can be described as amino acid polymers as they are made up of many amino acid monomers stringed together in a linear fashion, which then gives rise to more complex structures, as various bonding and manipulation takes place. The name protein comes from the Greek word meaning holding first place which supports the fact that they are essential to life. Proteins, depending on their structure and where they are found, play very different roles in an organism. One of the main types of proteins are enzymes which act as biological catalysts, and are fundamental to the chemical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An amino acid is made up of a carbon atom in the centre (known as the  carbon), a carboxyl group, amino group, a hydrogen atom and an R group (figure 1). The R group is the section of the amino acid that determines its chemical properties. In glycine, the R group is hydrogen. Some of the amino acids have R groups that are hydrophobic and some have R groups that are hydrophilic and this often determines how the protein folds into its tertiary structure and also where they can be found within the cell. It is the sequence of these amino acids that determines the type of protein that is made. Amino acids join to form proteins in a process known as protein synthesis where a gene is expressed to produce a polypeptide chain. After the genetic code has been translated from the DNA in the nucleus, the resulting mRNA is transcribed into a polypeptide in the cytoplasm of the cell. The mRNA binds to a ribosome and has 3 base pairs exposed called a codon. The anticodon of a tRNA molecule can then bind to the codon as it has complementary base pairs, and it carries with it an amino acid. The first amino acid in the chain is always methionine. When a second tRNA, carrying a different amino acid arrives and binds, a peptide bond forms between the two amino acids and the resulting product is a dipeptide molecule two amino acids joined together. This process continues and as more amino acids are joined together by peptide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
