Talk by Marco Bizzantino: In my talk I will demonstrate how monitoring works with the DevOps approach. Within an organisation, different people with different roles need to have a complete view over the whole infrastructure. One of the greatest benefits of Icinga is its ability to integrate with various tools and modules to satisfy the company’s requests. An example is OpenShift monitoring. I will point out the most important parts of monitoring OpenShift infrastructure while maintaining it’s complexity. In my approach I will show how we combine Icinga, Prometheus, Grafana and Elasticsearch for an overall OpenShift monitoring solution. Additional examples will show the benefits of using Icinga’s Business Process modelling to add more value to the result.

Security is one of the main components for this new platform and is expected to be self-service and easy to use. But it’s not only technology we are building, it’s a new culture based mainly on DevOps. So, what better opportunity to shift-left and offer developers the tools that they need to easily change their (and security teams) mindsets regarding security? In this talk we will walk you through the strategy that we have adopted to expose security services for enabling secure development but at the same time automating security processes needed by security teams. All this trying to keep it in a low budget (at least for now) by levering on vendors and open-source solutions.

Through standardised definitions of Kafka topics and use of Avro schemas, we can map which topics exist, what data they contain and who has access to them. Microservice Architecture (MSA) is emerging as a popular architecture pattern in today’s agile enterprise. A “you build it, you own it” development process requires tools that developers know and understand. So I’d like to introduce “GitOps”- an agile software lifecycle for modern applications. In this session, I will discuss these industry challenges, including current CICD trends and how they’re converging with operations and monitoring. I’ll also illustrate the GitOps model, identify best practices and tools to use, and explain how you can benefit from adopting this methodology inherited from best practices going back 10-15 years.

OCRE Workshop: Shaping the Earth Observation Services Market for Research. Session 3: Presentations from DIAS and eoMALL. This workshop aims to bring the EO service providers closer to the research community, capture their needs and develop fit for purpose EO services. The event will be the 4th OCRE Requirements Gathering Workshop. Researchers and Earth Observation Service Providers will be asked to provide inputs to help us shape OCRE's tender. The OCRE project aims to provide the first end-to-end instance of organised, large-scale market pull for EO services in Europe. These services will be provided for free to EU researchers through the European Open Science Cloud. To ensure that the services meet the actual needs of the research community we invite both the demand and the supply side, to share their views and engage in a productive dialogue. Our aim is to capture the needs of EU researchers and inform the EO service providers so that they make available services that effectively address them. We will also explain how the OCRE process will work, how the different stakeholders should be involved and how to make the most of the foreseen benefits.

Testimonial by: Egor Pronin and I am a DevOps in Wedos, the largest hosting provider in the Czech Republic. We own two private data centers with more than 10k servers. One of my responsibilities from the very first day in the company was monitoring. Since ‘ancient’ times the company had its own Java-written monitoring system. It tracked only the basic server indicators: CPU, RAM, free space on file systems. The monitoring server periodically pinged targets, which served as an indicator of server availability. This simple and old system collected basic metrics and displayed alerts on the monitor in the office of administrators on duty. It operated on a server-agent model, where an agent was installed on each server to collect data and send it to the server every minute. Besides monitoring servers and applications, the system also controlled engineering infrastructure indicators. With the overall development of infrastructure and modernization of our data centers, there arose a need to display data on temperature, humidity and other indicators in server rooms to our administrators. This system is also used in our new data center with oil cooling. There are already much more sensors and detectors, so the monitoring system is still under development. In addition, this system will be connected to the other engineering systems of the data center: lighting, ventilation, air conditioning, and even blinds and gates. After familiarizing myself with the existing monitoring system and its limitations, I decided to use Zabbix, as at that time it was the most suitable tool for our purposes and tasks. However, we quickly abandoned Zabbix due to the company's transition to Kubernetes. In the new conditions, Zabbix no longer met our growing needs and did not fit into the concept of transitioning to Kubernetes. We began looking for a Kubernetes-native solution and stopped on Prometheus. All initial setup of the new monitoring system, as well as my personal acquaintance with the internals of Kubernetes, was done on it. We added targets, wrote alert rules, and experimented with creating our own exporters. However, with time, it became clear that Prometheus could not handle the rapidly growing server park and application autoscaling, causing Out Of Memory (OOM) errors. That's when I got to know about VictoriaMetrics (VM). The transition was smooth: first, we turned off data collection in Prometheus, leaving it only as a storage, and distributed the data collection and discovery tasks to vmagents. But it was painful to see how long Prometheus took to start, sometimes up to an hour and a half. Why bother with configuration and tuning if everything is readily available in VM? Thus, we fully transitioned to monitoring using the VM ecosystem.

Data access can bottleneck end-to-end machine learning pipelines as training data volume grows and when large model files are more commonly used for serving. For instance, data loading can constitute nearly 80% of the total model training time, resulting in less than 30% GPU utilization. Also, loading large model files for deployment to production can be slow because of slow network or storage read operations. These challenges are prevalent when using popular frameworks like PyTorch, Ray, or HuggingFace, paired with cloud object storage solutions like S3 or GCS, or downloading models from the HuggingFace model hub.
