BookNet Canada’s representative in the BISG Subject Code Committee, Lauren Stewart, updates us on the recent additions and changes made to the BISAC list in the 2023 update, which are particularly important to publishers of Indigenous content.
Link to video recording and transcript: https://bnctechforum.ca/sessions/standardsgoals-for-2024-whats-new-for-bisac/
Presented by BookNet Canada on April 25, 2024, with support from the Department of Canadian Heritage.
6. What’s new in Bibliographic Standards?
● ONIX 3.1 released
● 5 new ONIX codelists (61-65)
● BookNet endorsement of BISG’s Statement on Misuse of the title
and subtitle fields
● 2023 BISAC Subject Codes released
6
7. ● Book Industry Standards and Communication
● North American-administered standard to describe the content of
a book
○ Committee steered by the Book Industry Study Group (BISG)
○ Also used in parts of Central and South America
● Three “flavours” of BISAC
○ BISAC Subject Headings
○ BISAC Merchandising Themes
○ BISAC Regional Themes
7
BISAC: Quick Round-Up
8. BISAC Merchandising Themes
● Merchandising themes can be used in addition to subject codes to
denote:
○ An audience to which a work may be of particular appeal
○ A time of year or event for which a work may be especially
appropriate
○ A frequently requested topic
○ Note that this is optional, separate from the subject
● Can help further describe fictional works
● More information & codelist:
bisg.org/bisac-merchandising-themes-version-27
8
9. BISAC Regional Themes
● Highlight regional opportunities for:
○ Appropriate sales representatives
○ Regional purchase by booksellers and chain buyers
○ Cataloging considerations and regional librarians
○ Promotions and media
9
10. BISAC Subject Codes
● Alpha-numeric codes with English-language headings
● 52 major sections with detailed subtopics
● Over 5,500 distinct terms in the 2023 edition
● New list released every year
● More information and codelist:
bisg.org/complete-bisac-subject-headings-list
10
11. BISAC Subject Code: Subject Codes Committee
● BISG members’ volunteers
● BookNet is the designated Canadian market representative,
though other Canadians sit on the Committee
● Creating, revising, and amending the list of codes and subject
headings
● Soliciting and reviewing requests for updates from the publishing
community and committee members
11
12. BISAC Subject Codes: The process
● Annual list release schedule:
○ North American Subject Codes Committee meets once per
month, every month September-Summer
○ Final list of committee-selected proposals approved by BISG’s
Board of Directors in Fall
○ November / December release
○ Adoption by industry systems follows
12
15. Indigeneity in BISAC Subject Headings: Why
● Requests from publishers & supply chain participants to address:
○ Gaps in representation and missing Indigenous worldviews
■ Missing codes reflecting large swaths of products
■ Desire for improved granularity
○ Conscious & unconscious bias evident in the subject headings
○ Persistent catch-22 of publishers of Indigenous content:
1. Select a subject code that does not represent Indigeneity
authentically to respond to market opportunities, or
2. Choose to honour Indigenous worldviews and limit BISAC
engagement and subsequent opportunities 15
16. Indigeneity in BISAC Subject Headings: Why
● Strong response following the limited changes requested & made
in 2022:
○ Engagement from Indigenous-owned and -operated presses
○ Desire to see expanded availability of codes beyond the
Juvenile and Young Adult subject areas
16
17. A Short History of Terminology Changes in BISAC
● 2019: “Aboriginal” to “Native American”, as applicable
● 2019: “Native Canadian” to “Canada / Indigenous”, or similar
● 2020: “Native American” to “Indigenous Peoples of the Americas”, as
applicable
● 2022: “of the Americas” to “in the Americas”
● 2022: “Canada / Indigenous” (or similar) to “Indigenous Peoples of
Turtle Island”
17
18. Indigeneity in BISAC Subject Headings: Why
● Market performance:
○ Sales growth of “Indigenous” subjects tracked by BookNet’s
SalesData service (service akin to BookScan in the US)
18
19. ● Call for participants & involvement in late summer & fall of 2022
● Started meeting in December 2022 with 13 meetings to-date
● Cross-function and title-agnostic engagement with firms
19
Our Working Group
20. Our Working Group
● Chickasaw Press / Independent Book Publishers Association
● HarperCollins Canada/Harlequin
● Penguin Random House Canada
● Goodminds
● Gooselane
● Groundwood Books
● House of Anansi
● Library & Archives Canada
20
● Lone Pine Publishing
● Medicine Wheel Education
● NeWest Press
● Orca Book Publishers
● Stratford Public Library
21. ● Pre-2023 list, 30 codes exist across all 5,200+ subject headings
● Leaving major gaps for a number of our publisher participants and
those who supplied feedback
21
Major theme: Need for more codes, full stop
23. Major theme: Need for more codes, full stop
● Example book: Anompilbashsha' Asilhha' Holisso: Chickasaw Prayer
Book from Chickasaw Press
● Current available subject headings are insufficient:
○ FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDY / Indigenous Languages of the
Americas
○ RELIGION / Prayer
23
25. Major theme: Need for more codes that reflect an
Indigenous worldview
● Example book: Mother Earth Plants for Health & Beauty: Indigenous
Plants, Traditions, and Recipes by Carrie Armstrong
● Current subject headings are insufficient:
○ BODY, MIND & SPIRIT / Healing / General
○ CRAFTS & HOBBIES / Candle Making
○ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Indigenous Studies
25
26. Major theme: Need for distinction between market
participants (“Canadian”, “US”, international)
● In the Canadian market, differentiating & identifying “Canadian” is
essential
○ Federal, provincial & local government programs to fund
Canadian authors, publishers & retailers
○ National marketing programs of Canadian authors &
publishers
○ National bestseller lists of Canadian authors & publishers:
newspapers of records include dedicated Canadian lists
26
27. ● Note: differentiating Indigenous groups (and, therefore, content)
according to Canadian / US statehood is not straightforward:
○ Indigenous worldview sees no border between the United
States and Canada
○ Before settlers arrived on the land known as “North America,”
Indigenous groups would settle, travel, and roam the lands,
crossing what we now refer to as borders
○ The creation of the border between Canada and United States
separated communities, language groups, and families
27
Major theme: Need for distinction between market
participants (“Canadian”, “US”, international)
28. ● Observation that some existing codes are third level and not easily
located by subject coders in-house, nor located by buyers
● Known challenge: the “tree”-type structure of BISAC and the
supremacies and associations that are suggested because of a
hierarchical system
28
Major theme: Need for codes to be more “visible” and
discoverable by data providers and data recipients
29. ● Examining the use of the word “ethnic” where it appears in existing
codes and suggesting alternative language:
○ Term is applied selectively by dominant groups to
equity-seeking communities (often those of colour)
○ Term applies a fictional dichotomy between white people and
communities of colour
○ Term also suggests that white people do not have an ethnicity
● Examining where some groups of people are sub-classified in
subheadings and others are not
○ ex. codes in “Biography & Autobiography”
29
Additional Considerations of the Working Group
30. Results: Coding Methodology
● Our approach: “three branch” methodology
● Following existing approach in the Young Adult categories
● Three branch methodology:
○ “Indigenous”
○ “Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island”
○ “Native American”
● Only the “Indigenous” branch to collect subheadings (if present)
30
31. Results: Coding Methodology
MAIN SUBJECT CODE HEADING / Indigenous; OR
MAIN SUBJECT CODE HEADING / Indigenous / General
MAIN SUBJECT CODE HEADING / Indigenous / Subheading 1
MAIN SUBJECT CODE HEADING / Indigenous / Subheading 2
AND
MAIN SUBJECT CODE HEADING / Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island
AND
MAIN SUBJECT CODE HEADING / Native American
31
32. ● When one of the MAIN SUBJECT CODE HEADING / Indigenous
codes are selected to describe the book's content, the publisher
could also select either:
Code Connotes content relevant to
buyers and/or readers interested
in…
MAIN SUBJECT CODE
HEADING / Indigenous Peoples
of Turtle Island
“Canadian” content
MAIN SUBJECT CODE
HEADING / Native American
"US" content
32
Coding Methodology: Guidelines
33. ● This restrained proposal (akin to “double coding” approaches used
elsewhere in the list) has benefits:
○ Enriches meaning/understanding of the MAIN SUBJECT CODE
HEADING / Indigenous
○ Offers opportunities for market differentiation
○ Opens up opportunities in the future to add additional, more
precise groups (such as First Nations, Inuit & Métis)
● Both non-branches could be used independently, if there was not
an appropriate MAIN SUBJECT CODE HEADING / Indigenous code
to select:
○ MAIN SUBJECT CODE HEADING / Indigenous Peoples of Turtle
Island or MAIN SUBJECT CODE HEADING / Native American
33
Coding Methodology: Guidelines
34. ● Finally, for additional granularity, a publisher may choose to use
BISAC Merchandising Themes to add granularity. The following are all
scheduled to be added in the 2023 list:
○ CULTURAL HERITAGE / First Nations
○ CULTURAL HERITAGE / Métis
○ CULTURAL HERITAGE / Inuit
○ CULTURAL HERITAGE / Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island
○ EVENT / Powwow
○ EVENT / National Indigenous History Month
○ HOLIDAY / National Indigenous Peoples Day
○ HOLIDAY / Indigenous Peoples' Day (US; formerly Columbus Day)
○ HOLIDAY / National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt
Day) 34
Coding Methodology: Guidelines
35. 35

37. People & Places
● The distinction and segregation of Peoples into a separate heading
implies an “othering” where their identities are not the presumed
to be of the “norm” / “dominant” / “majority” identity group
○ This mindset is harmful and marginalizing to both the creators
and publishers of works classified under these terms as well as
to the potential consumers of such content
37
38. People & Places
● These branches appear in the following locations:
○ JUVENILE FICTION / People & Places
○ JUVENILE NONFICTION / People & Places

● These branches contain both regions and countries, as well as
people

47. Legends, Myths & Fables: Indigenous Worldview
● Reports to BookNet Canada asserted that Indigenous owned and/or
operated firms avoid this code as they feel it is disrespectful to their
Peoples:
○ In respect to many Indigenous cultures, their stories, teachings and
values make up their worldview, that of a living culture, and the
connotation of being grouped with legacy (historical) or fictional cultures
is harmful
○ Moreover, grouping into an omnibus code that includes all three
components (Legends, Myths & Fables) has the negative association that
their stories (incl. sacred) are untrue
○ Perpetuates colonial and Eurocentric ways of thinking that Indigenous
worldviews do not deserve to be upheld in the same way as others’. After
all, BISAC codes do not consider Christian worldviews as “Legends, Myths
and Fables”, as that would be disrespectful to the beliefs of that
community 47
