As we architect our systems for greater demands, scale, uptime, and performance, the hardest thing to control becomes the environment in which we deploy and the subtle but crucial interactions between complicated systems. And microservices obviously are the way to go forward with those complicated systems. But what makes it so hard to build them? And why should you embrace failure instead of doing what we can do best: Preventing failure. This talk introduces you to the problem domain of a distributed system which consists of a couple of microservices. It shows how to build, deploy and orchestrate the chaos and introduces you to a couple of patterns to prevent and compensate failure.
Over-Engineering: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
If your are using Cloud Foundry, you are most obviously into the microservices architecture and cloud-native app development approach. These are definitely best practices in modern application development, but too much of a good thing is good for nothing. Overuse of these principles may lead to over-engineering, when an application is split into too much microservices and, as such, gets hard to maintain and support. This presentation highlights how far overuse of the microservices concept can go, what issues exist, and how these issues can be avoided.

Sironta is a distributed peer-to-peer collaboration platform that allows users to securely collaborate, share files, and communicate across organizational boundaries. It uses open-source technologies like OpenOffice, XMPP protocol, and GIT's delta encoding to provide an affordable alternative to centralized collaboration solutions. While still in development, Sironta aims to grow through viral and social media marketing of its free basic features. It hopes to one day compete with large collaboration platforms but keep operating costs 80% lower through its distributed architecture and business model focused on paid advanced features for a small percentage of users.

Abstract: Zero Trust eliminated the notion that users, devices, or service could be inherently trusted within your company's network. Yet for some reason we default to trusting the dozens to even thousands of dependencies we import into our applications. These dependencies adopt the same privileges and access as the parent application and are prime targets for attackers. Malicious actors repeatedly seek and take over popular dependencies to gain a foothold into companies. This is not fear mongering, this is happening today. Millions of people – including our speaker – have unknowingly downloaded and run malicious code as part of their normal developer activities.
This is a difficult problem without obvious solutions. WebAssembly gives us a new way of thinking about it. In this talk, Jarrod Overson illustrates how WebAssembly changes the game and can make our applications more secure while improving performance, reusability, and maintainability both on and off the browser.

This is a workshop about communication and collaboration. We will experience how we can analyze the reasons for resistance to change (exercise 1) and practice how to improve our conversation style and be more in control and effective in the way we communicate (exercise 2).
This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
Abstract:
Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.
We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.
