In an interview with The Guardian (2009) Wole Soyinka explained that the motivation behind writing
Death and the King s Horseman was a bust of colonialist, Winston Churchill. To Soyinka, Churchill
signified the breaking of the Yoruba culture and traditions. The idea for the play came from an
instance during the colonial period in Nigeria, when the British intervened in the traditional suicide of
a king s horseman.
The title itself already makes reference to a Nigerian ritual in which the horseman of a king must kill
himself after the death of the king (McNulty, 2011:2). The biggest event of cultural misunderstanding
is evident in Act II when the British Officer, Pilkings, orders that Elesin Oba (the horseman) be
arrested. Joseph (the stableboy) tells the Pilkingses how it is tradition for the king to be burried a
month after his death but, before he can be burried, his dog, his steed and his horseman must die to be
able to accompany him to heaven. For long this tradition is questioned and contested by the Pilkingses
because how can something like that make sense to anybody? It is only once Olunde shows up in Act
IV that the playwright changes the context. Olunde compares the suicide of the horseman to the mass
killing of soldiers. He judges the Western customs of war in the same way the Westerners criticized his
traditions and people. And when Simon manages to stop Elesin from killing himself, Olunde turns his
back on his father at first, after which all the people from the market insults Elesin. His failure in the
task is seen as a weak will.

and Amusa shows up. Amusa refuses to speak to Pilkings because of his costume, a uniform the

Scientists have been using stem cells since their discovery to improve research and treatments. One
type of organ improvement stem cells have played an important part in recently is the heart. There can

For example, scientists at the Texas Heart Institute extracted stem cells and anti inflammitory from fat
tissue from a patient that had had a myocardial infarction. Scientists then injected the stem cells into
the damaged area of the heart. They then studied patients with stem cell injections and without stem
cell injections. From baseline to six months, they noticed patients without stem cells damage area
increased by 5.1%, and patients with stem cells damage area decreased by 3% (Texas Heart). This
study had positive affects, as did a similar one. Other scientists induced rats to have myocardial
infarctions. They then extracted cardiac stem cells from the rats themselves and injected them back
into the damaged area of the heart. Mortality rates decreased, and scientists noticed the aortic and
myocardial walls became thicker to protect themselves from future problems (Beltrami, Barlucchi,
Torella). From the use of stem cells, cardiovascular repair can greatly decrease mortality rates and
increase quality of life for survivors. After patients have gone through heart disease, like any other
injury, therapeutic steps must be taken. Therapy and rehabilitation of damaged hearts has been

Surprisingly that just simply is not the case. Most of the men that joined, volunteered as free men from
the North. Most of these men have been dealing with stereotypes and slavery all their lives, and now
because of Abraham Lincoln, these men believe they have a something to fight for. The reason many
men volunteered was because of Lincoln s words and actions, it rallied the men in such a way that
motivated others to contribute to the cause of ending the war, white or black. Throughout the whole
movie, the men kept having doubts about their orders. They had to burn a village down to the ground,
watch one of their fellow men be flogged in front of them, and other things that did not help keep up
morale. Like I described earlier, the Civil War era was something Americans have not experienced, it
was total war. Regardless the regiment stuck together and kept training until their first battle. Up unto
this point, they have not had the chance to fight, they ve mainly been working on labor and building
