Recent research projects have deepened our understanding of the complex links between the mental and physical health of individuals and the current levels of community and global health. There is, however, still a dearth of courses that not only teach individuals sustainable living skills, but that also enable them to understand the physio-emotional, psychosocial and ecological causes of their struggles with sustainable living. The 'Learning for Sustainable Living and Emotional Well-being' seminar series described in this PowerPoint presentation is an initiative designed to address this shortcoming. Context matters in the practice of interpreting but too often the complexities and implications of context are not adequately defined in interpreter training. Instead, learning about the many and varied contexts that interpreters are called into is left to on-the-job experience.
Over the last twenty years, Robyn Dean and Robert Pollard have offered practitioners, educators, and trainers ways to identify and talk about the interpreting context and how to more effectively prepare interpreters for working in those contexts. Much of that work has been devoted to the contexts of medical and mental health.
This presentation explains how medical interpreting educators can help to not only define context but teach it and assess practitioners’ ability to understand and apply it in professional practice. As medical education has worked to improve the clinical skills of providers so too should medical interpreter education. This can happen by bringing interpreter practitioners incrementally closer to the medical contexts, that is to improve and assess their clinical skills.Recomendados

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. Border towns and spaces of (in)visibility.pdf
This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

- 4. Questions you! • Most important step toward NAP implementation? • Top piece of advice for other countries? • What is one barrier or solution on the strategic role that the NAP process can play in scaling up adaptation?

Knowledge clinic you! » An opportunity to get advice from peers and from facilitators on a specific challenge that you are facing. » During the session a “patient” will describe their challenge while a set “doctors” listen and provide advice. » The objective is to promote peer to peer support while helping participants come up with new approaches to tackle real-world problems.
- 6. Knowledge clinic: instructions you! » The “patient” has up to 3 minutes to provide a detailed description of the MEL problem or challenge they face. They should be as specific as possible to get specific feedback in response. » The “doctors” have 3 minutes to ask follow- up questions that are for clarification only. » There is then 14 minutes for doctors to provide feedback on their recommendations.
