As someone who identifies as a multi racial woman, I have found that my racial location in
society has been different based on who I am around. I am of lighter skin, and I have
acknowledged I am more privileged than a woman who is darker than me. As a multi racial
woman, I at times have had to make sure I fit in based on who I was surrounded by. I am aware
that in ways I do benefit from white privilege, but in a lot of ways I am still put into the
subordinate group by the dominate racial groups. I fully became aware of my racial identity as a

When I read through the poem at first I did not understand why the Mariner suddenly deserved
to be set free. The audio recording aided me in realizing exactly where the spell begins to break
and why. When the Mariner is asking for forgiveness he pleas but or ever a prayer had gusht
(244) explaining how sorry he is for what he has done. Yet, that stanza ends with my heart as dry
as dust (246) showing how he hasn t quite learned his lesson yet and he is still deeply affected by
the tragedy of the consequences. Although these words rhyme, the reader chooses not to
highlight that, rather she chooses to highlight the differences in the two words. When the reader
pronounces the word gushed she drags out the sh sound making it sound like a wave. This
reminds the listener of the importance of the water imagery throughout the poem. If the Mariner
s heart gushed like a wave then his sorrow is washing over his body and he is begging to be
forgiven and ready for the burdon of the curse to be washed away. Yet, the Mariners heart is still
dry as dust so this cannot happen quite yet. The word dust is soft, short, and is not emphasized
