HERBAL COSMETICS
INTRODUCTION:
 Herbal cosmetics are also known as “natural cosmetics” or “ayurvedic cosmetics”.
 Herbal cosmetics mainly include herbs either in crude form or in the form of extract.
 The basics of cosmetics used in skin care are taken from ancient texts of Rigveda, Yajurveda and
various systems of medicines like Ayurveda, Unani and Homeopathic.
 More and more cosmetics are using plants because they're gentle on skin and not harmful.
 Cosmetics contain both natural and plant-based ingredients.
 Means it can be said to be a blend of nature with modern technology.
 In cosmetics, natural ingredients encompass extracts, oils, and secretions, whereas phytoingredients
consist of pure constituents obtained through diverse processes.
DEFINITION:
 Herbal cosmetics can be defined as products, which possess desirable physiological
activities like healing, enhancement of appearance and conditioning properties due to the
presence of herbal ingredients present in them.
 These cosmetics are made using plant-based ingredients that offer cosmetic benefits.
⁃ Excessive heat exposure in summer can lead to dehydrated skin, causing wrinkles, blemishes,
sunburns, pigmentation issues, and freckles.
⁃ During severe winter conditions, the skin may suffer damage such as cracking, cuts, excessive
softening, and susceptibility to infections.
⁃ Ayurveda utilizes numerous herbs to create cosmetics aimed at enhancing beauty and
safeguarding against external factors.
⁃ Natural phytoconstituents have no harmful side effects on the human body.
⁃ Herbal cosmetics combine different ingredients for a base, adding more for specific cosmetic
benefits. The basic skin care include following requirements:

Skin care:
Clensing agent:-Remove the dust, dirt and
dead cells that help to tighten the skin.
Toners:- Toners tighten the skin and
protect it from exposure to air toxins and
environmental pollutants.
Moisturizer:- The moisturizer keeps the
skin soft and flexible.
⁃ Herbs do not carry any adverse effects.
⁃ Herbs used in skin care are Aloe,
Turmeric, etc.
⁃ They can be categorized into different
types as represented in Fig.

⁃ Hair nourishment and grooming products are now widely popular world wide.
⁃ Hair appearance greatly influences overall body features, with variations in color, length, and
style distinguishing individuals.
⁃ Herbal drugs were used as a juice, latex or in dried powder form.
⁃ In the market, men can find hair creams, liquid and solid brilliantines, pomades,conditioners,
lotions and tonics. Women have access to hair sprays, lotions, wave sets, special rinses,
conditioners and brilliantines.
⁃ Herbal plants utilized in hair care products can be categorized into the following groups:
Hair care:
1)Plants used as hair cleanser:-Acacia concinna (Shikakai), Sapindus muukorrossi (ritha), Cydonia
oblonga (Bihi), Trigonella Foenum-graecum (Methi).
2)Plants used as hair dyeing agent:-Acacia arabica (Kikkar), Eclipta alba (Bhringaraj), Cydonia
oblonga (Bihi), Haematoxylon campechiaum(Patang), Hibiscus rosa sinensis (Gudhal), Lawsonia
inermis (Henna), Juglans regia (Akhrot), Terminalia belerica (Behera).
3)Plants used as antidandruff agents:-Arctinm lappa (Great burdock), Calendula officials (Gule-
abbas), Betula pendula (Birch), Urtica dioica (Stinging nettle).
4)Plants used as hair tonic/hair nourisher:-Annica montana (Arnica), Eclipta alba (Bhringraj),
Morus alba (Shatoot), Nardostachys jatamansi (Jatamansi), Phyllanthus emblica (Amla).
⁃ Oral diseases pose a significant global health challenge, as oral health is crucial for overall well-
being and quality of life.
⁃ Herbs have a long history of being utilized to prevent and manage dental issues over many centuries.
⁃ Herbal products can vary in their potency to manage dental health.
⁃ In dentistry, herbal products serve as antimicrobial, anxiolytic agents, analgesic, astringent, anti-
inflammatory and sedative.
⁃ The commonly used Ayurvedic medications for oral and dental health can be classified based on
their properties as;

Aloe, beta peppar (Piper betel), black pepper (Piper nigrum), clove (Syzygium
aromaticum), Coriander (Coriandrum sativum),eucalyptus (Eucaleptus
globules), garlic (Allium sativum), etc.
Spinach, pepper, broccoli, black tea, green tea, carrot, tomato, potato, black
berry, strawberry, pineapple, etc.
Capsicum ( Capsicum annum), Chili (Capsicum annum), Ginger (Zingaber
officinale), Clove (Eugenia caryophyllus), Menthal (Mentha piperata),
tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), poppy (Papaver somniferum) etc.
Aloe (Aloe vera), Garlic, Ginger, Onions (Allium cepa), periwingle (Vinca
minor), Neem (Azadirachtia indica) and Turmeric (Curcuma longa).
1) Herbal cosmetics are made from natural ingredients and do not contain any synthetic chemicals
that could harm the skin.
2) Natural cosmetics are safer for use compared to other cosmetic products.
3) Herbal cosmetics are compatible with all skin tones, whether it may be dark or fair.
4) These products are not expensive than synthetic cosmetics and sole for a cheap price during sales.
5) The natural ingredients are used so there is a no chances of any side effects.
6) It is a fastest growing segment of the beauty industry. Its purpose is to enhance both the health and
beauty of the skin by delivering specific outcomes.
7) Animal testing is not required.
ADVANTAGES:
1) Herbal cosmetics require long-term treatment because they have a slow effect in comparison to the
allopathic dosage form.
2) Their taste and odour are difficult to hide.
3) The manufacturing process of this drug is time-consuming and complicated.
4) These drugs are mostly not easily available.
5) In any herbal cosmetics the pharmacopoeia specifies the procedures or ingredients to be used.

HERBAL COSMETICS INTRODUCTION:  Herbal cosmetics are also known as “natural cosmetics” or “ayurvedic cosmetics”.  Herbal cosmetics mainly include herbs either in crude form or in the form of extract.  The basics of cosmetics used in skin care are taken from ancient texts of Rigveda, Yajurveda and various systems of medicines like Ayurveda, Unani and Homeopathic.  More and more cosmetics are using plants because they're gentle on skin and not harmful.  Cosmetics contain both natural and plant-based ingredients.  Means it can be said to be a blend of nature with modern technology.  In cosmetics, natural ingredients encompass extracts, oils, and secretions, whereas phytoingredients consist of pure constituents obtained through diverse processes.

DEFINITION:  Herbal cosmetics can be defined as products, which possess desirable physiological activities like healing, enhancement of appearance and conditioning properties due to the presence of herbal ingredients present in them.  These cosmetics are made using plant-based ingredients that offer cosmetic benefits.
  • 5. ⁃ Excessive heat exposure in summer can lead to dehydrated skin, causing wrinkles, blemishes, sunburns, pigmentation issues, and freckles. ⁃ During severe winter conditions, the skin may suffer damage such as cracking, cuts, excessive softening, and susceptibility to infections. ⁃ Ayurveda utilizes numerous herbs to create cosmetics aimed at enhancing beauty and safeguarding against external factors. ⁃ Natural phytoconstituents have no harmful side effects on the human body. ⁃ Herbal cosmetics combine different ingredients for a base, adding more for specific cosmetic benefits.   • 6. Clensing agent:-Remove the dust, dirt and dead cells that help to tighten the skin. Toners:- Toners tighten the skin and protect it from exposure to air toxins and environmental pollutants. Moisturizer:- The moisturizer keeps the skin soft and flexible. ⁃ Herbs do not carry any adverse effects. ⁃ Herbs used in skin care are Aloe, Turmeric, etc. ⁃ They can be categorized into different types as represented in Fig. Fig. Herbs properties in derma care
  • 7. ⁃ Hair nourishment and grooming products are now widely popular world wide. ⁃ Hair appearance greatly influences overall body features, with variations in color, length, and style distinguishing individuals. ⁃ Herbal drugs were used as a juice, latex or in dried powder form. ⁃ In the market, men can find hair creams, liquid and solid brilliantines, pomades,conditioners, lotions and tonics. Women have access to hair sprays, lotions, wave sets, special rinses, conditioners and brilliantines. ⁃ Herbal plants utilized in hair care products can be categorized into the following groups: Hair care:
  • 8. 1)Plants used as hair cleanser:-Acacia concinna (Shikakai), Sapindus muukorrossi (ritha), Cydonia oblonga (Bihi), Trigonella Foenum-graecum (Methi). 2)Plants used as hair dyeing agent:-Acacia arabica (Kikkar), Eclipta alba (Bhringaraj), Cydonia oblonga (Bihi), Haematoxylon campechiaum(Patang), Hibiscus rosa sinensis (Gudhal), Lawsonia inermis (Henna), Juglans regia (Akhrot), Terminalia belerica (Behera). 3)Plants used as antidandruff agents:-Arctinm lappa (Great burdock), Calendula officials (Gule- abbas), Betula pendula (Birch), Urtica dioica (Stinging nettle). 4)Plants used as hair tonic/hair nourisher:-Annica montana (Arnica), Eclipta alba (Bhringraj), Morus alba (Shatoot), Nardostachys jatamansi (Jatamansi), Phyllanthus emblica (Amla).
  • 9. ⁃ Oral diseases pose a significant global health challenge, as oral health is crucial for overall well- being and quality of life. ⁃ Herbs have a long history of being utilized to prevent and manage dental issues over many centuries. ⁃ Herbal products can vary in their potency to manage dental health. ⁃ In dentistry, herbal products serve as antimicrobial, anxiolytic agents, analgesic, astringent, anti- inflammatory and sedative. ⁃ The commonly used Ayurvedic medications for oral and dental health can be classified based on their properties as; Oral care:

Plant with Antimicrobial property: Plant with Antioxidant property: Plant with Analgesic property: Plant with Anti- inflametory property: Aloe, beta peppar (Piper betel), black pepper (Piper nigrum), clove (Syzygium aromaticum), Coriander (Coriandrum sativum),eucalyptus (Eucaleptus globules), garlic (Allium sativum), etc. Spinach, pepper, broccoli, black tea, green tea, carrot, tomato, potato, black berry, strawberry, pineapple, etc. Capsicum ( Capsicum annum), Chili (Capsicum annum), Ginger (Zingaber officinale), Clove (Eugenia caryophyllus), Menthal (Mentha piperata), tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), poppy (Papaver somniferum) etc. Aloe (Aloe vera), Garlic, Ginger, Onions (Allium cepa), periwingle (Vinca minor), Neem (Azadirachtia indica) and Turmeric (Curcuma longa).
  • 11. 1) Herbal cosmetics are made from natural ingredients and do not contain any synthetic chemicals that could harm the skin. 2) Natural cosmetics are safer for use compared to other cosmetic products. 3) Herbal cosmetics are compatible with all skin tones, whether it may be dark or fair. 4) These products are not expensive than synthetic cosmetics and sole for a cheap price during sales. 5) The natural ingredients are used so there is a no chances of any side effects. 6) It is a fastest growing segment of the beauty industry. Its purpose is to enhance both the health and beauty of the skin by delivering specific outcomes. 7) Animal testing is not required. ADVANTAGES:
  • 12. 1) Herbal cosmetics require long-term treatment because they have a slow effect in comparison to the allopathic dosage form. 2) Their taste and odour are difficult to hide. 3) The manufacturing process of this drug is time-consuming and complicated. 4) These drugs are mostly not easily available. 5) In any herbal cosmetics the pharmacopoeia specifies the procedures or ingredients to be used.
