BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHINESE EMERGENCE IN THE PHILIPPINES
 Direct contact of China and the Philippines existed from at least the
Sung period (960-1279)
 Around the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the junk trading system
emerge which gave several points in the Philippines regular
commercial and cultural contacts with the Chinese.
 In 1594, the Spanish Governor Luiz Perez Dasmariñas created
Binondo as a permanent settlement for Chinese mestizos who
converted to Catholicism. Chinese merchants and traders were free
to do their business.
 Chinese mestizo communities aside from Binondo, emerged in
other parts of the archipelago.
- Manila: Sta. Cruz and Tondo
- Iloilo, Pampanga and Cebu
- Northern Luzon: Pangasinan, Benguet, Mountain Province

weddings.

 The number 12 symbolizes the

Filipinos have adapted the ability for haggling
whenever they go to flea markets, bargain shops and
sale items
Joyous occasions are celebrated with fireworks displays
During birthdays, pancit is always present as part of the
main course
The wearing of brightly colored clothes can be seen
during celebrations of Christmas, Valentines and
birthdays
 There is always this pressure
for Chinese to marry into
prominent mestizo families to
protect their business interests.
 The wedding ceremony
contains elements of ancestor
worship, elder reverence, the
lookout for omens, the use of
professional matchmakers , the
ornate gift-giving rituals and
patrilineal kinship.

hinterland went hand in hand
with the transformation of the
insular economy.
 Some became inquilinos.
 Most of them set themselves
up as small retailers and
moneylenders.
 Gained a central position in the
cash-crop economy on the
provincial and local levels.
Concept of political
marriage
Values the education
of their children
 As the export economy grew
and foreign contact increased,
the Chinese mestizos and other
members of the Filipino elites,
obtained higher education
abroad and entered
professions such as law and
medicine.
The traditional Chinese
marriage is called a hunyin
which is a ceremonial ritual
within Chinese societies
that involves not only a
union between spouses,
but also a union between
two families of a man and
woman.
