The Hoover Dam and Its Construction Essay
Outside of China, the United States is the most dammed country on the planet. Counting only dams
taller than fifty feet high, the U.S. has some 5,000 dams that range from giant hydroelectric dams such
as the Grand Coulee in Washington State to flood control dams in the southeast and dams that provide
water for irrigation in California. Overall the United States has as many as 2.5 million dams of one
sort or another. The design and construction of many of these dams took place between 1930 and
1975. This 45 years period is known as the golden age of dam building, starting with the construction
of the Hoover Dam beginning in 1931. By the 1970s the golden age of dam construction began to
come to an end with increased concerns ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the dam was located in such a remote location roads and railways had to be built to bring the
workers and materials to the site. Boulder City, a camp was also built to house the thousands of
workers. Before the construction of Hoover Dam even began Six Companies, Inc. had received over
2,400 job applications and more than 12,000 letters of inquiry from job seekers. Many men arrived
with all of their possessions and their families ready to begin a new life in the desert. Many of these
people were forced to wait and live in tent communities and shantytowns around Las Vegas. This
created very poor living conditions where more than 25 workers and family members died of heat
prostration between June and July of 1931. Fortunately the U.S. government anticipated this problem
and had already created plans to build a modern city, known as Boulder City, to house the workers and
their families near the site of Hoover Dam. To the surprise of both the government and Six
Companies, Inc. Boulder City turned into a community. Churches, a school, a newspaper, and a library
were all built in Boulder City making it a model community [iii].
Before construction of the actual dam could take place the Colorado River first had to be diverted, this
was done by tunneling four huge diversion tunnels through the bedrock of Black Canyon. These
tunnels were 56 feet in diameter, 4,000 feet long, and

Observation In High School
Looking out the window, anyone could see from the dark, shady sky, it was going to rain. It was the
end of freshman year, end of spring, early summer, and everyone had formed their study groups to
study for the Algebra final the following week. I, however, wasn t in a group and kept to myself, in my
corner by the window. I had no interest in studying and instead was captivated by the dim, warms, of
the outside world. As a freshman in highschool, I hated school and showed little interest in it. Staring
out the window, I had zoned out, then I was sitting outside under a large tree. The leaves rustling
above me, shaking side to side in a smooth swing. It s pretty bark, composed of multiple layers, dug
into my back. Roots grabbed the earth, its large knots exposed. The old bark felt rough, with its unique
texture, furrowed and scaly. Moss had crawled its way up the majestic trunk, very thin tangles of
green mass that swallowed the roots, jutting from the earth. Just sitting there, I could smell the sweet
fresh air, rain brought; It s safe aroma. It was crisp and clean, mixing ... Show more content on

My clothes fluttered violently against the rough wind. The trees leaves shuffling anxiously, for it knew
of the quickly approaching rain. The dark clouds could not hold in the heavy water anymore and,
softly the rain began to fall upon the tree in soft pattering drops, falling like rivulets among the leaves.
The leaves let the water fall even further until it reach my skin, slowly it rolled to the already wet
ground. More of the warm shower fell on me, soft to the touch, almost like velvet flower petals. The
petals had soon soaked me, clothes clung to my skin, and hair stuck to my face. The petals with the
smooth, light texture, had me floating away like the running stream along the sidewalks, flowing
quietly to where ever they desired. I was disappearing along with the water, fleeing like flower

Charles W. Chesnutt s The Passing Of Grandison
All throughout history humans have always tried to gain power over each other. In America it was the
white people who believed all others were inferior and should be treated as such, thus enslaved these
people. Many slave owners felt that it was their duty to take care of these slaves because they were not
mature enough to take care of themselves. The Passing of Grandison By Charles W. Chesnutt
Grandison is a slave owned by the Owens family. The plantation owner thinks Grandison is dumb and
incapable of being independent from the plantation. Thus Colonel Owens thinks Grandison is a good
choice to send north with Dick. Chesnutt uses limited third person point of view, dramatic irony, and
situational irony to convey the message that people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Dicks plan and not Grandison, the reader starts to believe that Grandison is not intelligent and will

also mentions to Dick to keep your eyes and ears open to find out what the abolitionists are saying and
doing. They re becoming altogether too active for our comfort, and too many ungrateful niggers are
running away. The irony here is that Dick is trying to get whichever slave he takes with him to run
away. His father is telling him to find out what the abolitionists are doing to abolish slavery and bring
the information back to the south. The Colonel is trying to keep his property safe from the north but
has no idea that letting Dick bring a slave up north is exactly the opposite of keeping them safe.
Chesnutt lets the reader in on Dick s secret leaving them to believe that they know all the secrets of
the story but the reader has no idea about grandison. Dick wants to take Tom up north knowing that he
will be easy to free. The Colonel also knows that Tom would escape in a heartbeat up north and
responds to Dick

Myths And Fairy Tales Essay
Myths and fairy tales are universal stories that help connect people from different backgrounds to their
own history and culture. Fairy tales give the reader with adventures, and how good always defeats
evil, while myths present us with heroes going through incredible hardship and at the same time, they
represent the fundamental values of our society. These stories help us develop an understanding of the
cultural values and how the human mind works. Myths and fairy tales continue to change through time
to adapt according to the values and reflections of the current cultural norms we are currently living.
Movies have become a platform to tell myths and fairy tales in a visual way to different age groups

Animals have been associated with magic for a long time. These enchanted pets were commonly used
to diagnose illnesses, to find sources of magic and to find treasures. It was not until the Middle Ages
and the rise of Christianity that these pets were considered evil. They started to be considered as
demons or evil spirits in animal form, sent out by a witch to do their evil bidding. In Harry Potter,
each of the before mentioned pets is associated in mythology in different ways: The Owl has always
been associated with death, sorcery and the dark side of life. The owls would go with witches on their
broomsticks and carry out their evil commands. Cats have always been associated with witches. A
witch was reputed to own a cat as a familiar pet and they were believed to embody demons and used
for spells.
In the wizardry world of Harry Potter, a magic wand had to be obtained to attend Hogwarts School of
Magic. A wand was a thin, handheld stick made of wood, stone or metals. It was a tool used to channel
the energy and magic of the witch. In Egyptian mythology, the magic wand is mentioned and in Greco
Roman mythology, the god Hermes had a special wand called a caduceus. In almost every childhood
story and fairy tale we have read, all the magical beings like the fairy godmother in Cinderella and
Sleeping Beauty, they all use a magic wand

Standard Procedures For Sign Concordance
Standard Procedures for Sign Concordance Study 10.18.2016 Authors: Arielle Crews, Austin Roy,
Alexa Lindauer, Janet Foley, Deana Clifford, Rob Klinger Introduction:
The Amargosa vole, Microtus californicus scirpensis, is a critically endangered rodent, endemic to the
Amargosa Basin near Death Valley, California. This water dependent species persists in a naturally
fragmented wetland ecosystem, that has existed since the end of the Pleistocene (Neuwald 2010).
However, due to California s historic four year drought and anthropogenic changes, the patchy
ecological makeup has been aggravated to extreme limits. The habitat loss and exasperated
fragmentation has drastically altered the wetland community and constricted the riparian habitat to
less than 20km2 (Foley 2013). This regime shift has forced the Amargosa vole to live in small,
isolated populations and has left the species vulnerable to disease (Ott Conn et al. 2014; Hess 1996;
Morshed et al. 2005), and the effects of genetic drift and inbreeding (Neuwald 2010). Consequently,
the altered hydrology has increased the potential of the voles extirpation with the one year extinction
risk as high as 10% (*).
For the successful recovery of an endangered species, accurate monitoring of occupancy and spatial
distribution must be conducted to better understand the factors that limit their occurrence (Brubaker
2013). Thus one objective of the ad hoc Amargosa vole team and the CDFW funded DRIP project
undertaken in 2016

Causes And Effects Of Solar Storms
A solar storm with that classification can produce long lasting radiation storms which can damage
satellites and even damage influence airline passengers that fly near the polls. The small radiation
doses produced as well by X class flares also hold the potential to create global transmission problems
and worldwide blackouts. When solar flares are produced from the sun, radiation is emitted across the
entire electromagnetic spectrum, starting at radio waves at the long end of the spectrum to x ray and
gamma rays at the short wavelength end. The beta and gamma radiation produced from the solar flare
influence the semiconductors present in most electronic systems in today s technology. When the
radiation passes through the semiconductor is can have two major effects: one is to make electron hole
pairs which may create soft errors and, if the radiation is produced in a sufficient amount permanent
damage can be caused by creating large numbers of charges with sufficient energy injected into silicon
dioxide regions and change the characteristics of the transistor. Not only can solar radiation damage
small components but can damage a large part of the power grid. When a geomagnetic storm hits the
earth the produced electromagnetic energy from the solar wind causes geomagnetically induced
currents. This is similar to the process of when an electrical generator produces electricity, the currents
produced by the solar storm are a geo electric field but have a magnetic field the same

Cache And Various Mapping Technique
Abstract This paper begins with the discussion about cache and various mapping technique. Then we
shift our focus on compressed caching which is the technique that tries to decrease paging request
from secondary storage. We know that there is a big performance gap in accessing the primary
memory (RAM) and secondary storage (Disk). The Compressed caching technique intercepts the
pages to be swapped out, compresses them and stores them in pool allocated in RAM. Hence it tries to
fill the performance gap by adding new level to virtual memory hierarchy. This paper analyze the
performance of virtual memory compression. Further to avoid various categories of cache misses we
discuss different types of cache technique to achieve higher performance. Lastly we discuss few open
and challenging issues faced in various cache optimization techniques.

I. INTRODUCTION
Basically, cache is the smallest and fastest memory component in the hierarchy. It is aimed to bridge
the gap between the fastest processor to the slowest memory components at a reasonable cost. It
maintains the locality of information and support the reduction of average access time. The address
mapping converts physical address to the cache address. But when it comes to virtual memory
systems, swapping turns out to be the greatest factor for reduce in performance. Disk latency is around
four times to that of accessing the

Ella Fitzgerald s Influences
Ella Fitzgerald is known as the First Lady of Song, and for good reason. Throughout her career,
Fitzgerald took jazz singing to new heights of fame and popularity, influencing the style of jazz and
future generations of musicians. Today, her music remains well known and loved, and her long and
prolific career reflects her impeccable skill and style. Her influence is still strong today, with singers
such as Adele, Mica Paris, Lady Gaga, and Lana Del Rey (BBC) citing Fitzgerald as a major influence
on their style and their love of music. Fitzgerald is often referred to as one of the greatest jazz
vocalists, along with Billie Holiday. However, Fitzgerald s style was not dominated by the typical
approach to jazz singing, instead being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Webb and his wife were extremely influential at this point in Fitzgerald s career, telling her to relax,
not to rush, and go with the beat, which would define eventually Fitzgerald s style.. When Webb
passed away, Fitzgerald took over the band, renaming it Ella Fitzgerald and Her Famous Orchestra .
They performed together until 1941, when the wartime draft dissolved the group.
Fitzgerald s career took off after World War II, when she joined Norman Granz s Jazz at the
Philharmonic (JATP) concerts and toured internationally with jazz instrumentalists. While performing
on the JATP tours, she was still under contract with Decca, not with Granz s label, Verve. While under
contract with Decca, her recordings mainly consisted of material that was beneath her capabilities and
that contrasted strongly with the work she was doing with JATP. . It wasn t until Granz bought out her
Decca contract in 1955 that her talent was truly shined in the recordings. Under Verve recordings,
Fitzgerald prospered and frequently performed, demonstrating her passion and talent while delighting
audiences around the world. Despite her obvious talent, Fitzgerald was known for her self doubt and
frequently about how others viewed her singing. In contrast to her energetic performances, she led a
rather quiet personal life. Her marriage to Bernie Kornegay in 1941 was annulled in 1943, and then in
1948 she married jazz bassist Ray Brown. In 1951, the couple adopted a baby whom

Photography and The Gothic
The photographs taken by Terry Evans in the collection Heartland show a range of perspectives of the
Midwest prairie. Heartland displays characteristics of the traditional Gothic through the combination
of wide landscapes and dilapidated factories. Photos from three collections portray the transition of the
untouched landscape to an overgrown and gothic scene. The first photos of the gothic transition come
from the Prairie Images of Ground and Sky collection. The collection shows untouched nature that
gives a feeling of the sublime. It shows wide green expanses, bathed in warm light, that shows a raw
beauty and goodness created by nature. This feeling of the sublime is a major aspect of the gothic due
to its ability to provide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This feeling is better reflected in the Matfield Green collection that depicts the green expanse that is
similar to the Prairie Images of Ground and Sky collection but also includes things such as railroads
and power lines that show that the area is populated. This collection adds an aspect of the isolated
landscape and fear of isolation because there is a sparse dotting of humans across the large expanse
that gives the viewer the knowledge that there are inhabitants around, but not seen or directly noticed.
The element of isolation in nature is demonstrated in The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Turn of the
Screw by Udolpho and the House at Bly through their setting in isolated landscapes with weak tethers
to the rest of civilization. The idea of overcoming this isolation is also present in the novels. Emily in
The Mysteries of Udolpho escapes the isolation to safety. The Governess in The Turn of the Screw
hopes to do the same by connection with the Man from Harley Street but is not as lucky. The effect of
the isolated landscape with an unknown element causes the reader and viewer to become suspicious of
their surroundings and uneasy with the sublime landscape due to the possibility that something evil is
residing within it and give a more traditional gothic feel. The third collection that completes a gothic
picture of the Midwest shows the ruins of the prairie. Steel Work

The Identificity Of Technology, Communication, And Digital...
How closely are you connected with those around you? How much do you rely on your phone not just
for communication but also for finding answers to questions or even keeping a schedule? Have you
consulted artificial intelligence about your dating questions? We as a society have moved into this
dependence on everything technology, artificial, and social media. We would much rather message or
post a question about a certain topic than actually ask somebody in person. And it s not just for
convenience, as we become more and more dependent on social media, texting, posting, and
technology in general, we subconsciously continue to wear down our ability to communicate and trust
one another on a physical level. A simple conversation with another person can go a lot further than an
email or text message. But why do we forfeit the physical interaction with someone for a digital
communication that simply does not have the lasting impression that a physical interaction has? As
stated by Sherry Turkle, in her article Flight From Conversation. We ve become accustomed to a new
way of being alone together. Technology enabled, we are able to be with one another, and also
elsewhere, connected to wherever we want to be. We want to customize our lives . (Turkle 49) Simply
put we are becoming more self important and more content socializing by ourselves. We like to have
things our way and we like to have it on our time. Turkle then continues on to say that A high school

Analysis Of Getting Back To The Wrong Nature By William...
Tai Beiserman
Professor Nachumi
ENGL 1100

Blake s use of nature through Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience
William Bill Cronon, an environmental historian and vice Chair of The Wilderness Society, believes
that because society differ its self from the nature, it makes the nature to be seen as wild, remote, and
inaccessible. In his essay The Trouble with Wilderness; or, Getting Back to the Wrong Nature ,
published in 1995 by the New York Times and in Uncommon Ground: Toward Reinventing Nature,
Cronon traced the idea of wilderness throughout American history. Cronon presents the potential
danger in society s traditional concept of wilderness. He points out how society detached itself from
nature simply by idealizing it and thinking of it as something distant and remote. Approaching the
concept of nature in this way leads to an ultimate separation of us, as members of society, from what
we could consider to be our true home. As a result of that, the nature is seen as wild, remote and
inaccessible. Although Cronon might be right to some extent, that is not always the case. Songs of
Innocence and Songs of Experience were written by William Blake and published together in 1798. In
Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience the nature is a key feature; in some poems the nature
seems to be close, and sometimes it is more remote. The distance of nature from society does not play
a role in Blake s poems; although in Songs of Innocence the adjacent nature is

Gay Parenting And Adoption
Gay parenting and adoption LGBT couples have existed for a very long time, and they have been
raising children for years and years, but discrimination has led these people to hide from society
(which in its majority is heterosexual.) However, on recent years there has been a decrease in
discrimination and prejudice against lesbians and gay men, leading to more people Coming out and
accepting their sexual preferences; which has led more LGBT people to freely perform normal
activities as couples, e.g., encouraging themselves to adopt children, and do things that seem as
normal to heterosexual couples.
This raises a question, why is LGBT adoption such a controversial topic? To answer this question we
need to go deep into politics and religion, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By 2000, census data showed that number had risen to one in five for male couples and one in three
for female couples. Based on these estimates, at least 250,000 children nationwide are being raised by
same sex couples. Census analysts note that these numbers may be significantly underestimated,
because many gays and lesbians do not self report their sexual orientation to the government. (Further,
census data indicate that lesbian and gay households can be found in 99 percent of all U.S. counties.)
However, the census reveals close to nothing without detailed information of the [private] lives of the
individuals. Which would be considered unconstitutional, and is would never be done inside the US.
But what exactly happens when homosexual couples are allowed to be foster parents? We have yet to
know the answer to this question. Elsewhere , including New York, a same sex marriage law took
effect July 24, and since same sex adoption was legal before that, this does not change the conclusion
regarding how gay couples have an effect on their adopted children, if they have an effect at

Thematic Comparison Of Literature Of Smart Cities
Thematic Comparison Of Literature
The recent years have seen a growing trend towards concentration in each country in major urban
centres. This fact constantly evolves and would place all of city infrastructure. Parallel to this
situation, there are problems in the various fields that determine the standard of living of a society
such as health, transport, and environment and caused concerns about their solution. Growing
urbanization and the serious economic and environmental challenges guide the creation of smart cities
as how to offer technological solutions. This option is designed to bridge the gap between supply and

The creation of a framework that can be used to characterize the way in which developed a smart city
and design initiatives that promote this growth opposes the view of some of the smart cities. The
researchers simply see it as smart urban centres which make better use of information and
communication technologies. Instead, the effort should focus on a broad and comprehensive approach
to improve the efficiency of city operations, citizens quality of life and the economy. The axes which
move the development framework and improving the smart city are the economy, people, governance,
mobility, environment and living.
The development of smart city requires managing a complex system of factors in the line of the above
axes. This is because everyone s dimensions give the actual value that is required to achieve the target.
The smart city is defined as a superset systems aimed at optimization of public and private city
systems. The processes leading to the improvement of urban business is

The Appalachian Region Of New York
Introduction
The Appalachian Region stretches from the northern part of New York, through Pennsylvanyia, all of
West Virginia, the West side of Kentucky, Mississippi, and the southern parts of Maryland, S.Carolina,
N. Carolina, and Alabama. The immigrants who settled in the Appalachian Region were made up of
three main ethinic backgrounds; Scot Irish, English, and German. Appalachian people are considered a
separate culture, made up of many unique backgrounds Native Americans, Irish, English and Scotch,
and then a third descendants of German and Polish immigrants all blended together across the region (
Appalachian Culture , 2015). The immigrants came to the Appalachian Region either in search of land
at cheaper prices or to get away from the Quacker Leaders. The Appalachian Region has proven to
create a hard way of life for those who settled the region. The people who settled in the Appalachian
region were known as hearty people who lived in an often difficult environment ( What is Unique ,
2015). Those who live in the Appalachian Region today may not face the same challenges as his or her
ancestors who settled the region, but there is no doubt the Appalachians still brings a set of challenges.
However, no matter the challenges there is one thing those who live in Appalachia share, tradition. It
is these traditions that assisted the first settlers, our ancestors, in living life and are still getting present

Short Essays in The Great Cat Massacre by Darnton
The Great Cat Massacre
Although the title of this book strikes the reader as unusual it begins to make complete sense once it is
read. This book is a series of short essays by Darnton. The second section, which is titled Workers
Revolt: The great Cat Massacre of the Rue Saint Sérverin brings the reader directly into the views of
the working class during the 1700s in France. This style of writing allows situations to be viewed
through the lens of those who are experiencing it, making for a more interesting read. The context of
this portion of the book truly gives an in depth account of the emotions and conditions that peasants
would meet with while being treated as inferior to even the animals by the masters. It can be said that
Darnton included this portion of the book to show the customs of the French during this time as well
as to be able to see the way that the working class lived. From the reading the working class was the
base of society, doing the work for the noblemen and everyday citizens. In this section it involves a
particular situation with two men that are apprentices in a noble house. Apprentices would learn their
way into a position of a trade and gain their success this way. Unfortunately, the apprenticeship
program was not the most enjoyable experience. These men were not allowed to sit at a table for
meals, they had to sleep in freezing rooms that were dirty and horrid, and were forced to eat the food
scraps that even the cats rejected. These men

Finally, recognizing multiple motives for norm conformity offers opportunities for research precluded

that in many contexts people s motives for norm conformity may not be in agreement. By considering

Hip Hop Is Dead Essay
Hip hop music contains more than just empty meanings; it can educate, motivate and encourage. In
addition, it possesses the power to inform one about current technology and urban life. Nevertheless,
since the start of the 21st century, hip hop has lost its originality by focusing on topics such as sex,
money, and drugs, rather than its original roots which educated on meaningful issues such as racism,
police brutality, and segregation. A good example of this would be Tupac Shakur s song Changes.

There Is Currently A Critical Global Shortage Of Nurses
There is currently a critical global shortage of nurses and it is projected to grow logistically in the
prospective years. The reasons for the nurse shortage is multifactorial but one of the more prominent
reasons is that nurses are at an increased risk for work related stress particularly in specialty areas such
as mental health nursing. Psychiatric nurses are frequent victims of burn out and workplace violence
because of the nature of patients they serve, the demands of the institution, and the shortage of trained
staff. According to Qi et al. (2014), Nurses working in mental health hospitals have been found to
suffer from higher levels of work related stress, as they are frequently exposed to violent behavior by
mental health patients ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Itzhaki et al. (2015), interventions such as training staff to deal with violence directed at
them contributed to the fact that even when nurses are working with mental health patients, it
promoted work safety as well as less stress. In addition, routine nursing staff training structured
around coping with aggression in mental health facilities are vital for preventing violence, dealing
with aggression, establishing trust and rapport with the patient, maintaining the security and the well
being of both staff and patients. Lastly, contrary to psychosocial and educational interventions is lack
of interventions provided to support the staff to cope with work place violence and job related stress
and burnout. Due to the lack of support, nurses tend to experience more burnout and less life
satisfaction. According to Itzhaki et al. (2015) a possible explanation could be that mental health
nurses often believe that patients violence towards them is to be expected and is considered part of the
job...Experiencing abuse could lead to ambiguity; nurses must take care of patients who abuse them.
This situation might evoke stress and reduce their life satisfaction. Therefore, it is essential as a
psychiatric mental health nurse to participate in trained programs such as Satori Alternatives to
Manage Aggression (SAMA) and psychosocial interventions such as group therapy to learn more
about work place violence and methods to reduce the effects of it along with stress

tool kits for foraging ants, suggesting our family tree may have possessed wooden tools since the
ancestors of humans and chimps diverged some 4 million years ago.
The dawn of stone tools dates back some 2.6 million years to Gona in Ethiopia. Known as the
Oldowan, these include not just fist sized hunks of rock for pounding, but also the first known
manufacture of stone tools sharp flakes created by knapping, or striking a hard stone against quartz,
obsidian, flint or any other rock whose flakes can hold an edge. At this time are also the oldest known
butchered animal bones. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was the extent of the technology for nearly a million years. It was probably very ad hoc when
you needed a stone tool and you didn t have one, just made one, then dropped it, said
paleoanthropologist Thomas Wynn at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
Such technology is just slightly past the range of what apes generally do, Wynn added. Indeed,
chimpanzees in the wild can use stones as simple tools for hammering, and the chimpanzee like
bonobo ape can even be taught how to flake stone to make cutting tools. These don t seem to represent
any great intellectual leap, he

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
CS was first described by Dr. David G Cogan in 1945 as a non syphilitic interstitial keratitis with
vestibuloauditory symptoms (1). CS is rare, with fewer than 250 reported cases in the literature, and is
mostly described in young adult Caucasian patients of both sexes (2). CS is an extremely rare disorder
in Arabic and Middle Eastern countries(3). The novelty of this study is represented by being the first
case reported within Jordanian population that is 7 million people.
The classical form of ocular involvement in CS is characterized by the interstitial keratitis, but also,
iritis or uveitis, scleritis or episcleritis, and conjunctivitis have been also described, and the atypical
CS exists in the absence of interstitial keratitis (2). Some systemic manifestations have been reported
in association with CS, including vasculitis of the aorta leading to aortic aneurysm and/or aortic valve
regurgitation, fever, arthralgia (or arthritis), lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, skin rash, and peripheral
or central nervous system involvement (2, 4).
The ocular involvement in CS usually gives a good response to topical corticosteroids therapy, while,
systemic corticosteroids are reserved for unresponsive cases or those with posterior uveitis, it was
reported that poor long term ophthalmologic outcomes due to CS are unusual in contrast to
vestibuloauditory affection(4).
Deafness is the most common serious outcome of CS and systemic corticosteroid therapy is warranted

Facial Recognition Research Paper
Facial recognition has been proven to advance in areas where DNA and fingerprint have both fallen
short. The complications that DNA and fingerprint possess is these two identification tools will not
always be present in a scene, also other errors such as, cross contamination may occur and false
evidence may be presented, as an ill attempt to cover up a mistake or taint evidence. From this
information, it can be inferred that the error rate of DNA compared to facial recognition is high. In
addition, unique identification techniques such as facial aging and facial marks assist facial
recognition to cover bases that DNA and fingerprint are unable to. The recognition tool can identify
people even with facial aging. If a 10 year old child

Axon Brain Case Study
An arriving action potential depolarizes the axon terminal of a presynaptic neuron. Calcium ions enter
the cytosol of the axon terminal, which results in acetylcholine release from the synaptic vesicles by
exocytosis. Ach diffuses across the synaptic cleft and binds to receptors on the postsynaptic
membrane. Sodium channels open, which produce a graded depolarization. Ach is broken down into
acetate and choline by AChE, which causes depolarization to end. The axon terminal reabsorbs
choline form the synaptic cleft and uses it to resynthesize ACh. B. Differentiate between the absolute
and relative refractory period of an action potential. Be sure to include ion gates in your discussion.

Traditional Vs. Online Education
Compare and Contrast Traditional vs. Online As this world s technology is progressing so is the way
we teach and learn. Ever since school started hundreds of years ago it s always been a teacher in a live
classroom with many students. Everything is shifting, however; and now we have transitioned into
online classes as well. I have had both, and I can tell you there are many comparisons and contrasts
between the two. 77% of educators believe that online learning is just as good as traditional learning,
if not better, nearly 70% of all students claim online instruction to be as good as or better than a
traditional classroom setting, and 26% of online students claim to learn better online than in a
classroom. So clearly people aren t too against this new form of learning. Online enrollment rates are
expanding at much faster rates than traditional classroom enrollment growth; specifically, in higher
education, online enrollments have grown 21%, whereas growth for traditional classroom instruction
registers only 2% since 2002. Traditional and Online classes have a lot of similarities and differences
especially in areas like flexibility, comprehension of the course material, and discipline. Traditional is
what I had my entire life up until I entered high school. It is what I prefer out of both choices. I learn
from one on one interaction, and that is something that online doesn t have. In traditional there is not
very much flexibility because of several reasons. Classes are

Chapter 15
Chapter Title: The Forager
1. In this section of the book the author discusses with the audience that the hunter gather food chain
is no longer to support us humans. After coming to an epiphany that he doesn t know to hunt and that
he only knows a little about gathering certain foods, Pollan begins to do some research on how to
properly hunt. The growing part was the only part I knew I could handle. I ve been a gardener most of
my life, and have made countless meals from my garden (p. 277).With the help of his mom with
natural things she took part in , as a child Pollan indeed had experience as a gatherer. With the
ingredients and things that he gathered from nature he wanted to cook his first home cooked meal. His

Blindness In Sophocles Oedipus The King
Oedipus Rex Essay
They say that there is no real definition of what it is to see something. We have all become
accustomed to seeing things that are right in front of us that we sometimes forget what we are truly
seeing. We tend to forget about the beauty behind certain things and we forget how lucky we are to be
able to see them. On the other hand, sometimes we try to close our eyes to the things we hate. During
a scary movie or horrific event, people may cover there eyes and choose to not see the truth and what s
really in front of them. Oedipus Rex wasn t able to see the truth, and yet Teiresias, a blind man saw it
plainly. Oedipus is known for his intelligence but chooses to be ignorant and therefore blind to the
truth about himself and his past. In Oedipus the King, Sophocles uses the blindness motif effectively
by making Oedipus blind throughout the story by his refusal to see that the prophecy has come true,
while Tiresias physical blindness allows him to see the truth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Reasons Of The Cuba Embargo Against Cuba
Cuba embargo has failed. During the last 50 years, the United States government has maintained the
trade embargo against Cuba. The Cuba embargo was put in place as executive order by Kennedy in
1962 because Fidel Castro confiscated many America businesses in Cuba. The Embargo did not get
the result for it was indented. Furthermore, the embargo has been failed policy and it should be lifted
immediately for three strong reasons. First, the embargo helps Castro to stay the power. Second it is
bad for American economy. Finally it is political incorrect.
The first reason to lift the America embargo against Cuba is because the embargo helps Fidel Castro to
preserve the power. According to Griswold (2005) the embargo actually enhances Castro s standing ...

has been able to reduce the percentage of sales devoted to selling, general and administrative costs
from 19.08% to 18.94%. This was a driver that led to a bottom line growth from $15.7B USD to
$17.0B USD ( Wal mart Stores Inc., 2013).
WALMART s IMPLEMENTATION OF RFID TAGS 5
Another important fact is supplier involvement with RFID implementation. Walmart s top 300
suppliers are required to put the tags on products, if they want to conduct business at Walmart. The
average cost per tag is less than 20 cents. Supplier s using the tag s benefit by communicating
immediate information to the retailer and product manufactures giving Walmart the competitive
leverage in retail industry by inventory control. RFID implementation benefits the entire logistics
operation and supply chain management.
Walmart IT Infrastructure

The Nanking Massacre
In this book, Iris Chang brings to light the atrocities that occurred during the Nanking massacre by
focusing on the initial Japanese attacks on the city, the work of the international community to protect
the Chinese, and the subsequent cover up of the massacre. Chang s primary argument is that the events
surrounding the Rape of Nanking have been downplayed by western and Japanese scholars, and need
to be discussed. A key element of the book is to counter a revisionist approach to the events of
Nanking which, in her estimation, pervade Japanese schools and have subsequently misled westerners
into believing that the Japanese military was not as vicious as they were. Her work does indeed

Sutton argues that the high reputation of the German advisors in China is overstated by historians, but
the advisors did provide high quality service to the modernization of the Chinese military. The author
attempts to dispel the myths surrounding the German advisory group, and demonstrate how the Nazi s
implementation of their military tactics altered the political landscape leading to the eventual break
from the Nationalists, and alignment with the Japanese. While Sutton limits his article on the
implications of the German s training style, he does well to provide an alternative to the traditional
conception of this group by reasonably making the point that not only has their reputation been
somewhat exaggerated, but their impact may have prepared the Nationalists for the wrong style of war
and not taken into account Chinese

Biography of Samuel F.B. Morse Essay
Samuel F. B. Morse was one of the greatest inventors of the 19th century; he was the invention of the
singled wire telegraph machine that influenced the Industrial Revolution in America and the Morse
code led way to many future innovations. Samuel Morse was not just an inventor; he was also a
painter that did works such as The Chapel of the Virgin at Subiaco and The Gallery of the Louvre
1831 1833 to portraits of famous politicians such as John Adams. Samuel F. B. Morse was born in
Charleston, Massachusetts on April 17, 1791. He was the son of a geographer and pastor Jedidiah

Samuel Morse ran into problems during the development of the telegraph machine, the telegraph
machine could only transmit information for a little bit more than a few hundred yards due to the loss
of current over long distances. Not until Professor Leonard Gale, of New York University, that helped
improved Morse s design that used superior batteries and electromagnets that enabled it to transfer
currents over great distances. After the help of Gale, Samuel Morse had perfected his telegraph; it was
able to send signals over great distances. Although his Journey wasn t over, he now had to send his
work to Washington where he awaited to be approved by Congress. He attended both sessions of
Congress, from 1837 to 1838 and another one in 1842 to 1843. During the last day of the session,
which was March 3, 1843, he spent the whole day and part of the evening in the Senate chamber,
anxiously watching the progress of the passing of the various bills (Morse) to watch the bill get
passed, he was awarded $30,000 to set up the very first telegraph machine from Washington to
Baltimore. His first telegraph machine was made from household instruments that consisted of an old
picture or canvas frame fastened to a table; the wheels of an old wooden clock [...] and a short circuit
of a wire, embracing the helices of the electro magnet connected with the positive and negative poles
of the battery and terminating the mercury cups (Morse). His apparatus was so crude

What Are The Consequences Of The Crusades
Before the Crusades began, in the 11th century, Western Europe had emerged with great power, while
Mediterranean civilizations were being invaded by Seljuk Turks. After years of war, the general
Alexius Comnenus took the throne of Byzantine in 1081 and consolidated control over the remaining
empire as known as Alexius I ( Crusades. ). By 1905, Alexius sent word to Pope Urban II asking for
troops from the West to help face the Turkish threat. Alexius request came at a time when the relations
between Christians from the east and west were improving. By November 1905, the pope had called
on Western Christians to take up arms so they could aid the Byzantines and recapture the Holy Land
from Muslim control ( Crusades ). The response was enormous, people from levels of the military, as
well as ordinary citizens, joined the pilgrimage to take back the Holy Land. Now that the Byzantines

Jerusalem was now weakly protected and the recruits were lacking in number. This caused internal
turmoil for the Crusaders and allowed for Saladin, the ruler of Cairo in 1169, to form a campaign

destroyed them at the battle of Hattin and taking the Holy Land as his own. These defeats over the
years and terrible outcomes is what brought on the Third Crusade. This round of fighting was led by
three rulers, Emperor Fredrick Barbarossa, King Phillip II of France, and King Richard I of England
also known as Richard the Lionheart. The only true battle held in this crusade was the Battle of Arsuf
where Richard s men defeated the people of Saladin and reestablished Christian control. A year later,
September 1192, Richard and Saladin signed a treaty where Muslims would stay in control over
Jerusalem but unarmed Christians could enter the city.

The Anti Roadway Carnage Bill
Dear Citizen, My gripe is with texting and driving. This is one of the most serious public health issues
of our time. I cannot for the life of me believe this practice has not yet been outlawed. Last year in the
United States, driver distraction was the cause of 16% of all fatal crashes, killing 5800 people. A
further 515,000 people were wounded as the result of distracted driving. The worst part is that up to
50% of teenagers the least experienced drivers on the road report texting and driving. We are teaching
the next generation to drive without teaching them about responsibility. Other states have already
passed laws, but our politicians are on record as saying they cannot ban something they do
themselves. How irresponsible! Thankfully, Senator Jim Duncan is proposing a bill that would outlaw
texting and driving. Please click here to sign a petition supporting Prop 733T, the Anti Roadway
Carnage Bill, and help keep our streets safe. Sincerely, Concerned Activist This persuasive memo is
designed to sell an idea, that texting and driving should be banned. The design put forth by Bowman
(2002) is the basis of the letter. The pacing of the letter is quick, with short sentences and simple ideas.
The reason for this is to generate an emotional response to help motivate the reader. The core of the
argument comes in the first two lines, so there is little time to for the reader to tune out. Bowman also
prescribes blending ideas, including blending truth and

A Comparison Of The American Dream And All My Sons
Alrighty, I am going to kind of mash together question one and two. I wanted to discuss the American
Dream and All My Sons, but I also think that topic really, nicely goes into the relevance it has today.
The American Dream can be worded and defined in different ways. But as stated in Question 1, The
American Dream can be defined as the idea that in the US anyone can become successful through hard
work and an entrepreneurial spirit. I think that is a definition that everyone can agree on, more or less.
The Cambridge Dictionary also defines the American Dream, the belief that everyone in the US has
the chance to be successful and happy if they work hard. Also as stated in Question 1, All My Sons is
often described as a negative critique of the American Dream.
I m sure we can all immediately recognize and understand what Joe Keller did is wrong and goes
against what you would think the American Dream is. He kept information from authorities about the
cylinders so he could get out of jail. Deever was kept in jail because of Keller s lies. Not only that, but
21 pilots died too. There is a huge moral and ethical responsibility to tell the truth and do the right
thing. However, Keller lied and kept information so that he could make money and get out of
jail..again, leaving Deever to sit in prison. Keller never thought about Deever, only himself and his
company. During the time of the incident (1947) stress was high and they had to make quick
decisions. All of the companies

U.s. Auto Parts Industry
 Despite recent growth, the U.S. motor vehicle sector is still behind. Total U.S. motor vehicle sector
sales in 2011 were 48.1 percent below sales in 2000 because of declining overall demand and

The U.S. trade deficit in auto parts increased from $9.5 billion in 2000 to $31.2 billion in 2010.
Exports support U.S. jobs, but imports displace production that would support domestic employment;
thus, on balance, trade deficits tend to increase unemployment (holding everything else in the

Why Is Eyewitness Testimony Unreliable
Eyewitness testimony is unreliable In older times eye witnessing was the only way to prove that a
criminal was guilty and put to jail. Now a day catching criminals is more fast and reliable with the
technology we have in our hands. Technology doesn t only help us capturing or prove the right person
at fault, it also helps us protect people. When it comes to eyewitnesses in court only reliable persons
are brought on by the lawyers, same with victims. The journal Does Eyewitness Memory Research
Have Probative Value for the Courts? explains that eyewitnesses have been giving testimony in
English speaking courts since the late 16th century. Expert testimony on eyewitness memory,
however, is relatively recent and still an infrequent event. One of the main reasons why courts ... Show

One example mentioned was that on movies or tv shows people are more focused on the big picture
and forget the little details that are in front of them. Another example that was given was when
watching a movie for the first time our brains only recollects the important information, but if one
watches with detail they can see that in the same scene objects and people stay the same or change.
This is called change blindness, not many people can see or find the change difference until someone
lets them know what changed. There are lots of reports that lack recognition of strangers changing
identity, but people can t seem to notice the blind change. People were showed a video of a robbery
and in the middle of the clip the robber was changed into a whole different person and only certain
people noticed the change, while the rest said nothing and pointed to picture of the first robber when
they were told to identify the individual. Which led to the eyewitnesses being unreliable when it came

Childhood Development And Child Development Essay
My topic is Early Childhood Development and this is the finding to know if attending pre school or
head start would help the child s development and have the child more prepared for kindergarten. This
topic is based on the social learning theory and how each family teaches their child differently.
I have chosen to do my topic on Early Childhood Development because of my practicum being a
developmental center (Inspire), also because I have a passion in working with families and children.
This appeals to me because I know that if the families enroll their child in the pre school program, the
child will benefit from it and will be more prepared for kindergarten. Usually agencies like this prefer
low income parents and if you meet the requirements, there is a good possibility that the child will
attend. I have met families that would like their child to attend because they know that it is a better
outcome for them, but in their household, they have a high income. Some research says that the
children that attended early head start programs were more development ready for kindergarten.
Inspire has a Region Head Start (RHS) which is for 3 5 year old children and this program helps the
children socialize with others, solve problems and have other experiences, which will help them
become more self confident (Inspire, 2016).
The theory I will focus on is the Social Learning Theory. Albert Bandura theory explains that people
learn from one another, either from modeling, imitation

  • 2. The Hoover Dam and Its Construction Essay Outside of China, the United States is the most dammed country on the planet. Counting only dams taller than fifty feet high, the U.S. has some 5,000 dams that range from giant hydroelectric dams such as the Grand Coulee in Washington State to flood control dams in the southeast and dams that provide water for irrigation in California. Overall the United States has as many as 2.5 million dams of one sort or another. The design and construction of many of these dams took place between 1930 and 1975. This 45 years period is known as the golden age of dam building, starting with the construction of the Hoover Dam beginning in 1931. By the 1970s the golden age of dam construction began to come to an end with increased concerns ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the dam was located in such a remote location roads and railways had to be built to bring the workers and materials to the site. Boulder City, a camp was also built to house the thousands of workers. Before the construction of Hoover Dam even began Six Companies, Inc. had received over 2,400 job applications and more than 12,000 letters of inquiry from job seekers. Many men arrived with all of their possessions and their families ready to begin a new life in the desert. Many of these people were forced to wait and live in tent communities and shantytowns around Las Vegas. This created very poor living conditions where more than 25 workers and family members died of heat prostration between June and July of 1931. Fortunately the U.S. government anticipated this problem and had already created plans to build a modern city, known as Boulder City, to house the workers and their families near the site of Hoover Dam. To the surprise of both the government and Six Companies, Inc. Boulder City turned into a community. Churches, a school, a newspaper, and a library were all built in Boulder City making it a model community [iii]. Before construction of the actual dam could take place the Colorado River first had to be diverted, this was done by tunneling four huge diversion tunnels through the bedrock of Black Canyon. These tunnels were 56 feet in diameter, 4,000 feet long, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Observation In High School Looking out the window, anyone could see from the dark, shady sky, it was going to rain. It was the end of freshman year, end of spring, early summer, and everyone had formed their study groups to study for the Algebra final the following week. I, however, wasn t in a group and kept to myself, in my corner by the window. I had no interest in studying and instead was captivated by the dim, warms, of the outside world. As a freshman in highschool, I hated school and showed little interest in it. Staring out the window, I had zoned out, then I was sitting outside under a large tree. The leaves rustling above me, shaking side to side in a smooth swing. It s pretty bark, composed of multiple layers, dug into my back. Roots grabbed the earth, its large knots exposed. The old bark felt rough, with its unique texture, furrowed and scaly. Moss had crawled its way up the majestic trunk, very thin tangles of green mass that swallowed the roots, jutting from the earth. Just sitting there, I could smell the sweet fresh air, rain brought; It s safe aroma. It was crisp and clean, mixing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My clothes fluttered violently against the rough wind. The trees leaves shuffling anxiously, for it knew of the quickly approaching rain. The dark clouds could not hold in the heavy water anymore and, softly the rain began to fall upon the tree in soft pattering drops, falling like rivulets among the leaves. The leaves let the water fall even further until it reach my skin, slowly it rolled to the already wet ground. More of the warm shower fell on me, soft to the touch, almost like velvet flower petals. The petals had soon soaked me, clothes clung to my skin, and hair stuck to my face. The petals with the smooth, light texture, had me floating away like the running stream along the sidewalks, flowing quietly to where ever they desired. I was disappearing along with the water, fleeing like flower ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Charles W. Chesnutt s The Passing Of Grandison All throughout history humans have always tried to gain power over each other. In America it was the white people who believed all others were inferior and should be treated as such, thus enslaved these people. Many slave owners felt that it was their duty to take care of these slaves because they were not mature enough to take care of themselves. The Passing of Grandison By Charles W. Chesnutt Grandison is a slave owned by the Owens family. The plantation owner thinks Grandison is dumb and incapable of being independent from the plantation. Thus Colonel Owens thinks Grandison is a good choice to send north with Dick. Chesnutt uses limited third person point of view, dramatic irony, and situational irony to convey the message that people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even if the reader does not believe that slaves are subhuman and not intelligent by only knowing Dicks plan and not Grandison, the reader starts to believe that Grandison is not intelligent and will always be a slave, because the way the story is written. When the Colonel tells Dick to go north he also mentions to Dick to keep your eyes and ears open to find out what the abolitionists are saying and doing. They re becoming altogether too active for our comfort, and too many ungrateful niggers are running away. The irony here is that Dick is trying to get whichever slave he takes with him to run away. His father is telling him to find out what the abolitionists are doing to abolish slavery and bring the information back to the south. The Colonel is trying to keep his property safe from the north but has no idea that letting Dick bring a slave up north is exactly the opposite of keeping them safe. Chesnutt lets the reader in on Dick s secret leaving them to believe that they know all the secrets of the story but the reader has no idea about grandison. Dick wants to take Tom up north knowing that he will be easy to free. The Colonel also knows that Tom would escape in a heartbeat up north and responds to Dick ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fairy tales give the reader with adventures, and how good always defeats evil, while myths present us with heroes going through incredible hardship and at the same time, they represent the fundamental values of our society. These stories help us develop an understanding of the cultural values and how the human mind works. Myths and fairy tales continue to change through time to adapt according to the values and reflections of the current cultural norms we are currently living. Animals have been associated with magic for a long time. These enchanted pets were commonly used to diagnose illnesses, to find sources of magic and to find treasures. It was not until the Middle Ages and the rise of Christianity that these pets were considered evil. They started to be considered as demons or evil spirits in animal form, sent out by a witch to do their evil bidding. In Harry Potter, each of the before mentioned pets is associated in mythology in different ways: The Owl has always been associated with death, sorcery and the dark side of life. The owls would go with witches on their broomsticks and carry out their evil commands. Cats have always been associated with witches. A witch was reputed to own a cat as a familiar pet and they were believed to embody demons and used for spells. In the wizardry world of Harry Potter, a magic wand had to be obtained to attend Hogwarts School of Magic. A wand was a thin, handheld stick made of wood, stone or metals. It was a tool used to channel the energy and magic of the witch. In Egyptian mythology, the magic wand is mentioned and in Greco Roman mythology, the god Hermes had a special wand called a caduceus. • 6. Standard Procedures For Sign Concordance Standard Procedures for Sign Concordance Study 10.18.2016 Authors: Arielle Crews, Austin Roy, Alexa Lindauer, Janet Foley, Deana Clifford, Rob Klinger Introduction: The Amargosa vole, Microtus californicus scirpensis, is a critically endangered rodent, endemic to the Amargosa Basin near Death Valley, California. This water dependent species persists in a naturally fragmented wetland ecosystem, that has existed since the end of the Pleistocene (Neuwald 2010). However, due to California s historic four year drought and anthropogenic changes, the patchy ecological makeup has been aggravated to extreme limits. The habitat loss and exasperated fragmentation has drastically altered the wetland community and constricted the riparian habitat to less than 20km2 (Foley 2013). This regime shift has forced the Amargosa vole to live in small, isolated populations and has left the species vulnerable to disease (Ott Conn et al. 2014; Hess 1996; Morshed et al. 2005), and the effects of genetic drift and inbreeding (Neuwald 2010). Consequently, the altered hydrology has increased the potential of the voles extirpation with the one year extinction risk as high as 10% (*). For the successful recovery of an endangered species, accurate monitoring of occupancy and spatial distribution must be conducted to better understand the factors that limit their occurrence (Brubaker 2013). Thus one objective of the ad hoc Amargosa vole team and the CDFW funded DRIP project undertaken in 2016 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Causes And Effects Of Solar Storms A solar storm with that classification can produce long lasting radiation storms which can damage satellites and even damage influence airline passengers that fly near the polls. The small radiation doses produced as well by X class flares also hold the potential to create global transmission problems and worldwide blackouts. When solar flares are produced from the sun, radiation is emitted across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, starting at radio waves at the long end of the spectrum to x ray and gamma rays at the short wavelength end. The beta and gamma radiation produced from the solar flare influence the semiconductors present in most electronic systems in today s technology. When the radiation passes through the semiconductor is can have two major effects: one is to make electron hole pairs which may create soft errors and, if the radiation is produced in a sufficient amount permanent damage can be caused by creating large numbers of charges with sufficient energy injected into silicon dioxide regions and change the characteristics of the transistor. Not only can solar radiation damage small components but can damage a large part of the power grid. When a geomagnetic storm hits the earth the produced electromagnetic energy from the solar wind causes geomagnetically induced currents. This is similar to the process of when an electrical generator produces electricity, the currents produced by the solar storm are a geo electric field but have a magnetic field the same ... • 8. Cache And Various Mapping Technique Abstract This paper begins with the discussion about cache and various mapping technique. Then we shift our focus on compressed caching which is the technique that tries to decrease paging request from secondary storage. We know that there is a big performance gap in accessing the primary memory (RAM) and secondary storage (Disk). The Compressed caching technique intercepts the pages to be swapped out, compresses them and stores them in pool allocated in RAM. Hence it tries to fill the performance gap by adding new level to virtual memory hierarchy. This paper analyze the performance of virtual memory compression. Further to avoid various categories of cache misses we discuss different types of cache technique to achieve higher performance. Lastly we discuss few open and challenging issues faced in various cache optimization techniques. Keywords Cache mapping technique, Cache optimization, Virtual Memory, Zswap, Zbud , LZO, Frontwrap I. INTRODUCTION Basically, cache is the smallest and fastest memory component in the hierarchy. It is aimed to bridge the gap between the fastest processor to the slowest memory components at a reasonable cost. It maintains the locality of information and support the reduction of average access time. The address mapping converts physical address to the cache address. But when it comes to virtual memory systems, swapping turns out to be the greatest factor for reduce in performance. Disk latency is around four times to that of accessing the ... • 9. Ella Fitzgerald s Influences Ella Fitzgerald is known as the First Lady of Song, and for good reason. Throughout her career, Fitzgerald took jazz singing to new heights of fame and popularity, influencing the style of jazz and future generations of musicians. Today, her music remains well known and loved, and her long and prolific career reflects her impeccable skill and style. Her influence is still strong today, with singers such as Adele, Mica Paris, Lady Gaga, and Lana Del Rey (BBC) citing Fitzgerald as a major influence on their style and their love of music. Fitzgerald is often referred to as one of the greatest jazz vocalists, along with Billie Holiday. Webb and his wife were extremely influential at this point in Fitzgerald s career, telling her to relax, not to rush, and go with the beat, which would define eventually Fitzgerald s style.. When Webb passed away, Fitzgerald took over the band, renaming it Ella Fitzgerald and Her Famous Orchestra . They performed together until 1941, when the wartime draft dissolved the group. Fitzgerald s career took off after World War II, when she joined Norman Granz s Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP) concerts and toured internationally with jazz instrumentalists. While performing on the JATP tours, she was still under contract with Decca, not with Granz s label, Verve. While under contract with Decca, her recordings mainly consisted of material that was beneath her capabilities and that contrasted strongly with the work she was doing with JATP. . It wasn t until Granz bought out her Decca contract in 1955 that her talent was truly shined in the recordings. Under Verve recordings, Fitzgerald prospered and frequently performed, demonstrating her passion and talent while delighting audiences around the world. Despite her obvious talent, Fitzgerald was known for her self doubt and frequently about how others viewed her singing. In contrast to her energetic performances, she led a rather quiet personal life. Her marriage to Bernie Kornegay in 1941 was annulled in 1943, and then in 1948 she married jazz bassist Ray Brown. Heartland displays characteristics of the traditional Gothic through the combination of wide landscapes and dilapidated factories. Photos from three collections portray the transition of the untouched landscape to an overgrown and gothic scene. The first photos of the gothic transition come from the Prairie Images of Ground and Sky collection. The collection shows untouched nature that gives a feeling of the sublime. This feeling is better reflected in the Matfield Green collection that depicts the green expanse that is similar to the Prairie Images of Ground and Sky collection but also includes things such as railroads and power lines that show that the area is populated. This collection adds an aspect of the isolated landscape and fear of isolation because there is a sparse dotting of humans across the large expanse that gives the viewer the knowledge that there are inhabitants around, but not seen or directly noticed. The element of isolation in nature is demonstrated in The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Turn of the Screw by Udolpho and the House at Bly through their setting in isolated landscapes with weak tethers to the rest of civilization. The idea of overcoming this isolation is also present in the novels. Emily in The Mysteries of Udolpho escapes the isolation to safety. The Governess in The Turn of the Screw hopes to do the same by connection with the Man from Harley Street but is not as lucky. The effect of the isolated landscape with an unknown element causes the reader and viewer to become suspicious of their surroundings and uneasy with the sublime landscape due to the possibility that something evil is residing within it and give a more traditional gothic feel. • 12. Analysis Of Getting Back To The Wrong Nature By William... Tai Beiserman Professor Nachumi ENGL 1100 26 April 2015 Blake s use of nature through Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience William Bill Cronon, an environmental historian and vice Chair of The Wilderness Society, believes that because society differ its self from the nature, it makes the nature to be seen as wild, remote, and inaccessible. In his essay The Trouble with Wilderness; or, Getting Back to the Wrong Nature , published in 1995 by the New York Times and in Uncommon Ground: Toward Reinventing Nature, Cronon traced the idea of wilderness throughout American history. Cronon presents the potential danger in society s traditional concept of wilderness. He points out how society detached itself from nature simply by idealizing it and thinking of it as something distant and remote. Approaching the concept of nature in this way leads to an ultimate separation of us, as members of society, from what we could consider to be our true home. As a result of that, the nature is seen as wild, remote and inaccessible. Although Cronon might be right to some extent, that is not always the case. Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience were written by William Blake and published together in 1798. In Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience the nature is a key feature; in some poems the nature seems to be close, and sometimes it is more remote. The distance of nature from society does not play a role in Blake s poems; although in Songs of Innocence the adjacent nature is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This book is a series of short essays by Darnton. The second section, which is titled Workers Revolt: The great Cat Massacre of the Rue Saint Sérverin brings the reader directly into the views of the working class during the 1700s in France. This style of writing allows situations to be viewed through the lens of those who are experiencing it, making for a more interesting read. The context of this portion of the book truly gives an in depth account of the emotions and conditions that peasants would meet with while being treated as inferior to even the animals by the masters. It can be said that Darnton included this portion of the book to show the customs of the French during this time as well as to be able to see the way that the working class lived. This caused internal turmoil for the Crusaders and allowed for Saladin, the ruler of Cairo in 1169, to form a campaign against the Crusader s Kingdom in Jerusalem. Saladin and his troops set out for the crusaders and destroyed them at the battle of Hattin and taking the Holy Land as his own. These defeats over the years and terrible outcomes is what brought on the Third Crusade. This round of fighting was led by three rulers, Emperor Fredrick Barbarossa, King Phillip II of France, and King Richard I of England also known as Richard the Lionheart. The only true battle held in this crusade was the Battle of Arsuf where Richard s men defeated the people of Saladin and reestablished Christian control. A year later, September 1192, Richard and Saladin signed a treaty where Muslims would stay in control over Jerusalem but unarmed Christians could enter the city. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Anti Roadway Carnage Bill Dear Citizen, My gripe is with texting and driving. This is one of the most serious public health issues of our time. I cannot for the life of me believe this practice has not yet been outlawed. Last year in the United States, driver distraction was the cause of 16% of all fatal crashes, killing 5800 people. A further 515,000 people were wounded as the result of distracted driving. The worst part is that up to 50% of teenagers the least experienced drivers on the road report texting and driving. We are teaching the next generation to drive without teaching them about responsibility. Other states have already passed laws, but our politicians are on record as saying they cannot ban something they do themselves. How irresponsible! Thankfully, Senator Jim Duncan is proposing a bill that would outlaw texting and driving. Please click here to sign a petition supporting Prop 733T, the Anti Roadway Carnage Bill, and help keep our streets safe. Sincerely, Concerned Activist This persuasive memo is designed to sell an idea, that texting and driving should be banned. The design put forth by Bowman (2002) is the basis of the letter. The pacing of the letter is quick, with short sentences and simple ideas. The reason for this is to generate an emotional response to help motivate the reader. The core of the argument comes in the first two lines, so there is little time to for the reader to tune out. Bowman also prescribes blending ideas, including blending truth and ... • 34. A Comparison Of The American Dream And All My Sons Alrighty, I am going to kind of mash together question one and two. I wanted to discuss the American Dream and All My Sons, but I also think that topic really, nicely goes into the relevance it has today. The American Dream can be worded and defined in different ways. But as stated in Question 1, The American Dream can be defined as the idea that in the US anyone can become successful through hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit. I think that is a definition that everyone can agree on, more or less. The Cambridge Dictionary also defines the American Dream, the belief that everyone in the US has the chance to be successful and happy if they work hard. Also as stated in Question 1, All My Sons is often described as a negative critique of the American Dream. I m sure we can all immediately recognize and understand what Joe Keller did is wrong and goes against what you would think the American Dream is. He kept information from authorities about the cylinders so he could get out of jail. Deever was kept in jail because of Keller s lies. Not only that, but 21 pilots died too. There is a huge moral and ethical responsibility to tell the truth and do the right thing. However, Keller lied and kept information so that he could make money and get out of jail..again, leaving Deever to sit in prison. Keller never thought about Deever, only himself and his company. During the time of the incident (1947) stress was high and they had to make quick decisions. All of the companies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. U.s. Auto Parts Industry  Despite recent growth, the U.S. motor vehicle sector is still behind. Total U.S. motor vehicle sector sales in 2011 were 48.1 percent below sales in 2000 because of declining overall demand and significant long term loss of market share.  The U.S. auto parts industry is particularly vulnerable. The U.S. trade deficit in auto parts increased from $9.5 billion in 2000 to $31.2 billion in 2010. Exports support U.S. jobs, but imports displace production that would support domestic employment; thus, on balance, trade deficits tend to increase unemployment (holding everything else in the economy constant).  The U.S. auto parts industry is threatened by Chinese practices. Heavily subsidized auto parts from China caused the U.S. auto parts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...  For some states, auto parts jobs are a significant share of overall employment. The 10 most vulnerable states as measured by auto parts employment as a share of total state employment in 2009 are Michigan (6.5 percent of total state employment), Indiana (4.8 percent), Ohio (3.7 percent), Kentucky (3.3 percent), Tennessee (3.0 percent), Alabama (2.2 percent), South Carolina (1.9 percent), Illinois (1.7 percent), Wisconsin (1.6 percent), and North Carolina (1.4 percent). Objective The purpose of proposal is to evaluate the correlation of the automobile industry, and the financial (and unemployment) crisis in the United States. Literature Review Employment in the U.S. Auto Parts Industry The extent of employment in the U.S. auto manufacturing business is motivated by demand for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts to equip car manufacturing factories in the U.S. Due to the relative influence of the entire motor vehicle division on the auto parts industry (Office of Transportation and Machinery 2011, 9), direct employment in the U.S. auto supply business has dramatically decreased in the past few years, downturning 419,600 jobs (45.8 percent) from November 2000 to November 2011 (Figure A). • 36. Why Is Eyewitness Testimony Unreliable Eyewitness testimony is unreliable In older times eye witnessing was the only way to prove that a criminal was guilty and put to jail. Now a day catching criminals is more fast and reliable with the technology we have in our hands. Technology doesn t only help us capturing or prove the right person at fault, it also helps us protect people. When it comes to eyewitnesses in court only reliable persons are brought on by the lawyers, same with victims. The journal Does Eyewitness Memory Research Have Probative Value for the Courts? explains that eyewitnesses have been giving testimony in English speaking courts since the late 16th century. Expert testimony on eyewitness memory, however, is relatively recent and still an infrequent event. One of the main reasons why courts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example mentioned was that on movies or tv shows people are more focused on the big picture and forget the little details that are in front of them. Another example that was given was when watching a movie for the first time our brains only recollects the important information, but if one watches with detail they can see that in the same scene objects and people stay the same or change. This is called change blindness, not many people can see or find the change difference until someone lets them know what changed. There are lots of reports that lack recognition of strangers changing identity, but people can t seem to notice the blind change. People were showed a video of a robbery and in the middle of the clip the robber was changed into a whole different person and only certain people noticed the change, while the rest said nothing and pointed to picture of the first robber when they were told to identify the individual. Which led to the eyewitnesses being unreliable when it came to the robber, making errors identifying them (Davies, Hine, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Childhood Development And Child Development Essay My topic is Early Childhood Development and this is the finding to know if attending pre school or head start would help the child s development and have the child more prepared for kindergarten. This topic is based on the social learning theory and how each family teaches their child differently. I have chosen to do my topic on Early Childhood Development because of my practicum being a developmental center (Inspire), also because I have a passion in working with families and children. This appeals to me because I know that if the families enroll their child in the pre school program, the child will benefit from it and will be more prepared for kindergarten. Usually agencies like this prefer low income parents and if you meet the requirements, there is a good possibility that the child will attend. I have met families that would like their child to attend because they know that it is a better outcome for them, but in their household, they have a high income. Some research says that the children that attended early head start programs were more development ready for kindergarten. Inspire has a Region Head Start (RHS) which is for 3 5 year old children and this program helps the children socialize with others, solve problems and have other experiences, which will help them become more self confident (Inspire, 2016). The theory I will focus on is the Social Learning Theory. Albert Bandura theory explains that people learn from one another, either from modeling, imitation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
