Updated Nov 2019 Many of our school libraries still look like they did fifty years ago, yet they are no longer quiet, dusty book repositories. Librarians are leading the way in technology use and modern pedagogy in our schools - now we need to update our spaces to match. In this session, we'll discuss strategies for redesigning and rethinking the physical space of libraries, including practical and budget-friendly changes that can be implemented right away. We'll look at examples of a variety of library spaces that went through makeovers and discuss creating interactive environments including makerspaces.

Many of our school libraries still look like they did fifty years ago, yet they are no longer serve solely as quiet book repositories. Librarians are leading the way in technology use and modern pedagogy in our schools - now we need to update our spaces to match. We'll discuss how to redesign and rethink the physical space of our libraries, including practical and budget-friendly changes that we can implement right away. As schools are moving back into in-person learning, we have an excellent opportunity to reimagine our library spaces. This session will look at how our spaces can help with social emotional learning, community-building, accessibility and inclusion. We'll discuss creative and innovative solutions for our spaces, including interactive environments like makerspaces and spaces for students to de-stress. This session will look at ways that we can bring diversity, equity and inclusion into our library spaces, including focusing on book purchases with a diverse range of authors, characters and experiences. We'll discuss Universal Design for Learning and accessibility and how these can apply to making our library spaces more student friendly. No matter where you're at, you'll get ideas and inspiration from this session.

Challenge Based Learning in Makerspaces

Design challenges have the power to encourage creativity in your students - by providing limitations and guidelines, students can actually become more creative. Learn strategies for creating design prompts, running challenges and incorporating the design process into projects with your students. We’ll discuss how to create open-ended challenges and material-specific challenges in a way that will maximize your students’ creativity, as well as how to create passive design challenges that require minimal supervision. We’ll talk about some of the problems that educators face when running challenges, how to help your students focus, and balancing guided projects, design challenges and open-ended exploration. Whether you’ve had a makerspace up and running for years or are just getting started with the Maker Movement, you will leave this session feeling equipped to lead your students through design challenges that will spark their creative genius.

Creating Engaging Middle School Maker Days In Your Library Makerspace

Finding ways to get our middle schoolers into our library makerspace can sometimes be challenging – especially in a pandemic. Last year, we expanded our existing makerspace programming into afterschool Maker Days twice a week and it’s been a huge success. This year we’re continuing to grow by incorporating maker activities into the 6th grade science curriculum. Makerspaces 201: I've got cardboard. Now what?

Updated version 6-18 The Maker Movement is taking the education world by storm and many teachers and librarians have been excited to create makerspaces in their schools. But once you’ve got the supplies and the space, it can be difficult to figure out how to keep the momentum going. In this session, you will learn about how the makerspace program at one middle school started with just three bins of K’nex and a vision. After three years, the makerspace transformed the library into the STEAM hub of the school. I’ll share my experiences from what I’ve learned in my own makerspaces and from visiting makerspaces across the country. You’ll learn strategies for setting up your MakerSpace, building a Maker culture in your school, involving your community, connecting with other schools, optimizing storage space for supplies and projects, and other useful tips and tricks to take your makerspace to the next level.

It's often difficult to get students into makerspaces for in-depth projects during the school day, so starting an after-school club can be a great way to jump-start your program and get your students engaged. Learn strategies for how to get started, including tips on advocating for an after-school club with your administration. Learn about setting norms and procedures for your students, balancing design challenges with free exploration and creating a reflection and sharing piece for students. I'll share about my experiences with our Stewart Makers Club over the last two years. Our Library Leadership Team, also known as the Library Vibe Squad, is made up of a group of students in middle school and high school who meet twice a month to help plan programs, displays, outreach events and just generally work to make the library more awesome. In this session, I'll share about the process of getting started, forming a team, planning meetings, divvying up responsibilities and allowing space for more student voice. We'll talk about strategies for forming a leadership team at your school, what road bumps you might run into, and how to give your students the leadership reigns. I'll also share about future ideas for our library leadership program and talk about the work my students have done since we started. We'll also get the student perspective with testimonials from my students on their experiences in library leadership. The world is changing at a breakneck pace. We're preparing our students for jobs that don't even exist yet. In this rapidly evolving world, it is vital that we equip our students with the skills they will need to thrive, such as critical thinking, communication, creativity and collaboration. Intergrating STEM through hands-on learning in our classrooms will help to develop these skills in our students. We'll look at examples of how project-based learning and the Maker Movement have transformed learning at Stewart Middle Magnet.

Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg, The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation. This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability. Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots. The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee. • The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act. • The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X. • The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction. This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
