The Innovative Agriculture for Smallholder Resilience (iNASHR) project (Egypt) was implemented over 3 years during which there was the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to instability in farm prices and uncertainties in water availability. Despite this, 18 teams of Entrepreneurs for Rural Access (ERAs) serving as digital extension service providers were able to reach more than 60,000 people in rural communities between 2021 and 2023. Three specially commissioned “farmer-to-farmer” style training videos were produced (see at the bottom of this blog post), and 60 other relevant Access Agriculture videos were translated into Arabic and shown to farmers. These active service providers, half of whom are women, used a solar-powered smart projector to reach communities where access to power supply, internet connection and mobile phone signal can be challenging.

The presentations made by Rhoda Mahava and Samson Oguntoye focused on the summary of the activities they have done together with ACAI in 2018, positive experiences, key challenges, going forward in 2019, and expectations for the meeting. The highlight of 2018 activities for development partners was the onset of the validation activities for the ACAI decision support tools. Development partner participated in the Training of Trainers and then facilitated the step down trainings at state level for project anchors in their respective states. Following the trainings, partners established validation trials within their locales reaching a combined total of 741 new trials in 2018. In Nigeria the partners have collaborated with ACAI team on the evaluation of the different formats of the DSTs. Partners across the two countries are set for the dissemination phase of the ACAI DSTs from 2019 by intensifying field activities and integrating learnings from ACAI into their work plan.

This presentation was made by Pieter Pypers and it highlighted the following: Project outcomes include a target number of extension agents trained on the use of the tools (1,259 extension agents), of which today 758 EAs (60%) have been involved in ACAI activities. Reaching a sufficient number of EAs is essential to have impact. Project outcomes focus on number of HHs benefiting from the tools (120,000) and the value generated through the use of these tools. Different activities under the WS4 include (i) a second round of validation exercises, (ii) grassroot events, (iii) tool demonstration, (iv) training events, (v) production of training materials, (vi) production of farmer-friendly videos, (vii) promotion events, (viii) awareness campaigns, and (ix) cluster meetings. The importance of ME&L was emphasized, and the process underlying impact evaluation: the project aims at tracking farmers who were reached, gained insights, continued using the tools, changed their practices and finally benefited. Most important: the project aims to understand what works and what doesn’t. Timeline of activities: the project aims to conduct a number of sprints to advance the tools in preparation of the use of the tools in Nigeria, starting in April 2020.

Insurers should be aware of these risks and the potential impact on their business. A 2019 global survey [With Climate Impacts Growing, Insurance Companies Face Big Challenges] found that 72 percent of insurance companies believe climate change will affect their business, but 80 percent of them have not taken significant steps to lessen climate risks. Moreover, insurance companies invest the money from the premiums they collect in the financial markets. They have $582 billion invested in fossil fuels investments that could be devalued as climate risks increase. As natural disasters become more frequent and more costly, insurance companies are facing big challenges. If insurers are to weather the storms ahead, they’ll need to make some changes. The insurance industry needs to make substantial changes to deal with its own climate risks. Some of these changes could also enable insurance companies to help speed the transition to a net-zero society. Speakers Diana Castro (picture) is part of UNEP. As the Programme Supervisor of the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) initiative, Diana oversees the largest collaboration between the United Nations and the insurance industry, which has over 250 members worldwide committed to integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance risks into their decision-making. Lesley Ndlovu (picture) is currently the Chief Executive Officer of African Risk Capacity “ARC” Ltd, based in Nairobi, Kenya. Kelvin Massingham is Director of Risk and Resilience at FSD Africa, where he is responsible for driving financial market innovation in Africa to increase resilience and create pathways for green finance to flow towards a net-zero and nature-positive future.

16 May 2023. This webinar discussed how climate-related risks threaten the functioning of banking institutions as well as the stability of the financial system. Climate change and climate policy affect the balance sheets and business models of banks in different ways. African banks are vulnerable to the increasing frequency and severity of climate change shocks. They are also increasingly aware of the importance of adopting green financing principles, seeking to address risks and more importantly, to grasp new opportunities. However, only 17% of banks have so far introduced specific green financing products, and these are estimated to account for only 2-20% of their portfolio . The webinar discussed how climate-related risks threaten the functioning of banking institutions as well as the stability of the financial system. Mr. Nyong has about 30 years of experience in environmental and natural resources management, renewable energy and green growth. He was a Coordinating Lead Author for the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report and a member of the IPCC Task Group on Data and Scenario Support for Impact and Climate Analysis. David ASHIAGBOR is the Chief Financial Sector Strategy Officer in the Financial Sector Development Department of the African Development Bank. He is currently leading the design and development of the Bank’s new Financial Sector Development Strategy, in addition to supporting the Director on policy and strategy issues. Marina FINKEN is the Partnership Coordinator for Making Finance Work For Africa (MFW4A). Today, I had the opportunity to review Professor Sylvester Monye's latest book, "The Concession of Asaba International Airport: Balancing Politics and Policy Execution.” The review was attended by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GGFR, Governor Sheriff F. Oborevwori of Delta State, former Senate President, H.E Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki CON, former SGF Boss Mustapha, CFR, and former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, who chaired the event. The book offers a master class in policy management in a complex political environment and sheds light on the challenges and intricacies involved in such a monumental project. It was a privilege to gain insight into the experiences and perspectives shared in the book, and I believe it offers valuable lessons for future policymakers and governments undertaking similar endeavours. Congratulations to Professor Monye on this insightful and thought-provoking work.

User research literature widely assumes that researchers should build empathy for their users, and that this will enable companies to design better experiences. Businesses point to UX research as the empathy in their company ethos. But when we talk about empathy in a business context, what do we really mean? Is it reasonable to expect researchers to empathize with every person they interview? Is it even productive? In this presentation, I will discuss why empathy is not what drives business and makes researchers good advocates for our users. We will first look at the literal and theoretical definitions of empathy in user experience research, then draw from that definition what businesses are ultimately in search of—rightly or wrongly—when they bring UX research into the process. We will talk about how it may not only be impossible to achieve true empathy, but also that “being empathetic” may not make researchers better advocates for the user. I will argue that we should reframe our goal as compassion, an action-driven, thoughtful, and achievable north star that leverages core researcher talents and better communicates user needs.
