ACRN needs to expose and pass through platform hidden PCIe devices to the Service OS (SOS) in order to properly support device access and power management. Currently some devices are hidden by the BIOS and cannot be discovered through normal enumeration. This causes issues when the SOS tries to access or configure these hidden devices. ACRN will add support to discover hidden PCIe devices and assign them to the SOS similar to normal devices, addressing the access and power management problems.
QEMU Disk IO Which performs Better: Native or threads?
Pradeep Kumar Surisetty from Red Hat presented a comparison of native and threaded I/O performance in QEMU disk I/O. He outlined KVM I/O architecture, storage transport options in KVM including virtio-blk configurations, and benchmark tools used. Performance testing was done with various disk types, file systems, images and configurations. Native generally outperformed threads for random I/O workloads, while threads sometimes showed better performance for sequential reads, especially with multiple VMs.
XPDS16: AMD's virtualization memory encryption technology - Brijesh Singh, A...
AMD presented on their memory encryption technologies for virtualized environments. Their hardware-based AMD Secure Memory Encryption and AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization features provide encryption of memory to enhance security and isolation between VMs and the hypervisor. The encryption is performed inline by the memory controller with minimal performance impact. Key management is handled by the AMD Secure Processor to isolate encryption keys. Integration with Xen would involve calling APIs to manage keys and ASIDs for guests to provide encryption using these technologies.
kdump: usage and_internals
Kdump is a long existing method for acquiring dump of crashed kernel, however very few literatures are available to understand it's usage and internals. We receive a lot of queries on kexec mailing list about different issues related to the kexec/kdump environment.
In this presentation, we talk about basics of kdump usage and some internals about kdump/kexec kernel implementation. It includes end to end flow from kdump kernel configuration to crash analysis. We discuss some of the problem which is frequently faced by kdump users. It also includes related information about ELF structure, so that one can debug if vmcore itself gets corrupted because of any architecture related issue.
XPDS16: libvirt and Tools: What's New and What's Next - James Fehlig, SUSE
A year has passed since the last Xen Developer Summit and it is time to announce the quiet progress made on the libvirt libxl driver and related tooling. New features include memory, cpu, block device, and network interface statistics reporting, support for pvUSB, support for migration stream V2, peer-to-peer migration, UEFI for HVM guests via OVMF, and domain capabilities reporting to name a few. There are also many noteworthy improvements such as better conversion of xl.cfg to/from libvirt domXML, allowing users to easily switch between the xl+libxl and libvirt+libxl toolstacks.
The summit also provides an opportunity to discuss new proposals such as better control of domain placement on NUMA systems, exposing Xen's cpu pool feature in libvirt, supporting non-volatile memory for UEFI variables, and improved capabilities reporting.
Much of libvirt's value for Xen is in the tools built upon it: virt-manager, virt-viewer, virt-install, virt-builder, kimchi, OpenStack nova, etc. These tools also deserve a quick status update as they relate to Xen.
The audience is encouraged to participate, e.g. by requesting a sorely missing feature, warning of an upcoming Xen change that may affect libvirt, or simply suggesting a change that makes virtualization management life a bit easier.

This talk presents a new client virtualization platform that allows Xen to be used on mobile phones and tablets. These embedded devices require special consideration, particularly in the context of client virtualization. We will outline the technical challenges of virtualizing common tablet devices, including the touchscreen, audio, webcam, accelerometer, Wi-Fi, cellular, and display devices. TrustZone implications will also be discussed.
We will present the current project status and what it took (or will take) to get NVIDIA's Jetson TX1 development board and Google's Pixel C tablet running multiple Android instances. ACRN needs to expose and pass through platform hidden PCIe devices to the Service OS (SOS) in order to properly support device access and power management. Currently some devices are hidden by the BIOS and cannot be discovered through normal enumeration. This causes issues when the SOS tries to access or configure these hidden devices. ACRN will add support to discover hidden PCIe devices and assign them to the SOS similar to normal devices, addressing the access and power management problems.
QEMU Disk IO Which performs Better: Native or threads?
Pradeep Kumar Surisetty from Red Hat presented a comparison of native and threaded I/O performance in QEMU disk I/O. He outlined KVM I/O architecture, storage transport options in KVM including virtio-blk configurations, and benchmark tools used. Performance testing was done with various disk types, file systems, images and configurations. Native generally outperformed threads for random I/O workloads, while threads sometimes showed better performance for sequential reads, especially with multiple VMs.
XPDS16: AMD's virtualization memory encryption technology - Brijesh Singh, A...
AMD presented on their memory encryption technologies for virtualized environments. Their hardware-based AMD Secure Memory Encryption and AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization features provide encryption of memory to enhance security and isolation between VMs and the hypervisor. The encryption is performed inline by the memory controller with minimal performance impact. Key management is handled by the AMD Secure Processor to isolate encryption keys. Integration with Xen would involve calling APIs to manage keys and ASIDs for guests to provide encryption using these technologies.
kdump: usage and_internals
Kdump is a long existing method for acquiring dump of crashed kernel, however very few literatures are available to understand it's usage and internals. We receive a lot of queries on kexec mailing list about different issues related to the kexec/kdump environment.
In this presentation, we talk about basics of kdump usage and some internals about kdump/kexec kernel implementation. It includes end to end flow from kdump kernel configuration to crash analysis. We discuss some of the problem which is frequently faced by kdump users. It also includes related information about ELF structure, so that one can debug if vmcore itself gets corrupted because of any architecture related issue.
XPDS16: libvirt and Tools: What's New and What's Next - James Fehlig, SUSE
A year has passed since the last Xen Developer Summit and it is time to announce the quiet progress made on the libvirt libxl driver and related tooling. New features include memory, cpu, block device, and network interface statistics reporting, support for pvUSB, support for migration stream V2, peer-to-peer migration, UEFI for HVM guests via OVMF, and domain capabilities reporting to name a few. There are also many noteworthy improvements such as better conversion of xl.cfg to/from libvirt domXML, allowing users to easily switch between the xl+libxl and libvirt+libxl toolstacks.
The summit also provides an opportunity to discuss new proposals such as better control of domain placement on NUMA systems, exposing Xen's cpu pool feature in libvirt, supporting non-volatile memory for UEFI variables, and improved capabilities reporting.
Much of libvirt's value for Xen is in the tools built upon it: virt-manager, virt-viewer, virt-install, virt-builder, kimchi, OpenStack nova, etc. These tools also deserve a quick status update as they relate to Xen.
The audience is encouraged to participate, e.g. by requesting a sorely missing feature, warning of an upcoming Xen change that may affect libvirt, or simply suggesting a change that makes virtualization management life a bit easier.
XPDS16: Xenbedded: Xen-based client virtualization for phones and tablets - ...
This talk presents a new client virtualization platform that allows Xen to be used on mobile phones and tablets. These embedded devices require special consideration, particularly in the context of client virtualization. We will outline the technical challenges of virtualizing common tablet devices, including the touchscreen, audio, webcam, accelerometer, Wi-Fi, cellular, and display devices. TrustZone implications will also be discussed.
We will present the current project status and what it took (or will take) to get NVIDIA's Jetson TX1 development board and Google's Pixel C tablet running multiple Android instances. We will provide an overview of the platform’s build toolchain and source trees. Finally, we will open up discussions on the future of the platform and the challenges associated with improving Xen adoption on mobile ARM devices.

Lightweight virtualization", also called "OS-level virtualization", is not new. On Linux it evolved from VServer to OpenVZ, and, more recently, to Linux Containers (LXC). It is not Linux-specific; on FreeBSD it's called "Jails", while on Solaris it’s "Zones". Some of those have been available for a decade and are widely used to provide VPS (Virtual Private Servers), cheaper alternatives to virtual machines or physical servers. But containers have other purposes and are increasingly popular as the core components of public and private Platform-as-a-Service (PAAS), among others.
Just like a virtual machine, a Linux Container can run (almost) anywhere. But containers have many advantages over VMs: they are lightweight and easier to manage. After operating a large-scale PAAS for a few years, dotCloud realized that with those advantages, containers could become the perfect format for software delivery, since that is how dotCloud delivers from their build system to their hosts. To make it happen everywhere, dotCloud open-sourced Docker, the next generation of the containers engine powering its PAAS. Docker has been extremely successful so far, being adopted by many projects in various fields: PAAS, of course, but also continuous integration, testing, and more.

Running Applications on the NetBSD Rump Kernel by Justin Cormack
Abstract
The NetBSD rump kernel has been developed for some years now, allowing NetBSD kernel drivers to be used unmodified in many environments, for example as userspace code. However it is only since last year that it has become possible to easily run unmodified applications on the rump kernel, initially with the rump kernel on Xen port, and then with the rumprun tools to run them in userspace on Linux, FreeBSD and NetBSD. This talk will look at how this is achieved, and look at use cases, including kernel driver development, and lightweight process virtualization.

Justin Cormack has been a Unix user, developer and sysadmin since the early 1990s. He is based in London and works on open source cloud applications, Lua, and the NetBSD rump kernel project. He has been a NetBSD developer since early 2014.
