Atrial Septal Disease
Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are a deficiency in the wall between the right and left atrium of the heart
(5). ASDs account for 10% of all congenital heart defects(19) and 30% of those diagnosed in
adulthood (20). Definitive diagnosis is by transthoracic echocardiography, though signs of an ASD can
be found on physical examination, electrocardiography and chest radiography (21).
There are four types of ASD, classified according to their position in the interatrial septum (Figure 2):
Ostium secundum defects which represent 80% of all ASDs and are located in the region of the fossa
ovalis
Ostium primum defects which are located in the lower portion of the septum, adjacent to the
atrioventricular (AV) valve
Sinus venosus defects which are located at the junction of the superior/inferior caval veins

Exertional dyspnoea and fatigue are the most common symptoms. These are caused by a left to right
shunt, when the connection between the two atria allows blood to pass from the left side of the heart to
the right. This occurs because the pressure in the left side of the heart is naturally higher than the right.
The extra blood from the left atrium overloads the right atrium and the right ventricle, causing right
heart dilation, and subsequent heart failure (5). If left untreated, patients can develop reversal of the
ASD, resulting in a right to left shunt; this is known as Eisenmenger s syndrome. Other complications
include atrial tachyarrhythmias or stroke (21, 22).
A patient is indicated for closure if they experience symptoms, irrespective of age, to reduce
subsequent morbidity and mortality (21). To reduce this risk, closure should be considered in patients
at risk of a paradoxical embolism, such as patients undergoing pacemaker implantation or professional
divers (5,

The True Nature Of Cheerleading Essay
As human beings, it is natural to judge people who are different than ourselves. Most often these
judgements are based off of common beliefs, or stereotypes. Stereotypes apply to every group, from
the slow moving elderly to lively cheerleaders. Usually these beliefs do not describe every person in a
group, but they all receive the same labels. Cheerleaders make up one group that is commonly
stereotyped, but many people don t know the true nature of cheerleading.
Countless stereotypes that I have about cheerleaders have been ingrained into my mind by the media,
and from personal experience. From what I had observed in high school, cheerleaders are the popular
girls with plenty of friends. Not being associated with a cheerleader meant that you weren t on the
map. Promiscuity was also an extremely prominent stereotype in high school, which had always
shocked me since the cheerleaders seemed like a nasty group of girls. Cheerleaders also have a
reputation of being air headed or simply not intelligent. As an outsider, they did not give me the
impression of being book smart, especially at my high school. Another stereotype that I have is that
cheerleaders aren t entirely athletic. Yes, cheerleading is a sport. Yes, it can be dangerous and it does
take work. However, cheering doesn t look like it requires the same level of effort and intensity as
multiple other sports. These are all widespread beliefs about cheerleaders that I have come to expect
from them.

Heat Wave Causes And Effects
Description A heat wave is a period of excessive heat, which last two or more days. Heat Waves lead
to illnesses and could be fatal with prolonged exposure to these extreme conditions. High humidity
can increase the heat even more. Heat is very deadly because it is a silent killer. Heat related illness
and death can occur due to exposure in one day however it has a cumulative effect on the body. It is a
threat to the public health in 1995 between 14 and 20 July 485 Chicago residents died directly from
heat related causes. Over a thousand were admitted to inpatient units in local hospitals due to for heat
related illness like heatstroke, dehydration and heat exhaustion. Heatstroke victims suffered permanent
damaged and loss their independence along with multisystem failure. Thousands of other Chicago
residents were treated at local emergency rooms. When the heat subsided epidemiologist compiled
statistics on the mortality patterns during July. They factored in the deaths of people that had not been
taken to the Medical Examiner s Office. The death count based on medical autopsies determines
between 14 and 20 July 739 more Chicago residents died than in a typical week in July. Heat wave
deaths occur more in cities. The infrastructure of a typical city has brick and mortar buildings, asphalt
streets, and tar roofs. As a result, during the daytime they absorb heat and slowly release it at night.
The temperatures in urban areas are warmer than rural areas by several degrees

Theme Of Birds In Macbeth
In William Shakespeare s Macbeth, Shakespeare often uses a motif of birds in order to foreshadow
future events and relationships. Shakespeare achieves this by likening two influential characters,
Macbeth and Macduff, to an owl and a crow, respectively, as well as using references to other types of
birds in order to set a tone.
The first major mention of birds occurs when Duncan and his entourage arrive at Dunsinane, about
which Banquo remarks that The temple haunting martlet... Hath made his pendant bed and procreant
cradle. / Where they most breed and haunt, I have observed / The air is delicate. (1.6.4 10).
Shakespeare includes this detail in order to illustrate Dunsinane in a time of peace, before it becomes a
beacon of violence and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the Great Metaphysical Chain of Being, the falcon is the supreme bird who rules over all
of the others, with the owl ranking a few notches below it. The death of the falcon at the owl s hand
illustrates that the natural order of things has been disrupted, a situation that bears resemblance to
what has just occurred at Dunsinane, with king Duncan having been murdered by Macbeth, a man
who was beneath him in terms of power. This parallel between the upset in nature and the upset that
occurred at Dunsinane reinforces the idea that the owl symbolizes Macbeth. In the second scene of the
third act, after speaking with the murderers in order to plan Banquo s death, Macbeth pronounces that
night s black agents to their preys do rouse. The phrase night s black agents refers to a predator that
hunts at night, which yet again is the owl, with Banquo likely being the metaphorical prey. This is
probably the most blatant of the hints that the owl symbolizes Macbeth, as Macbeth makes this
comment in full knowledge that Banquo will soon be murdered indirectly by his hand. In that same
scene, the crow is first mentioned when Macbeth remarks upon how light thickens, and the crow
makes wing to the rooky wood (3.2.50 51). This allusion to the crow is significant because it is here
that the parallels between the crow and Macduff begin to form. Just a few scenes prior, in act two
scene four,

Maguire s Rebellion Research Paper
The spark that ignited Maguire s discontent into open rebellion was the appointment and ensuing
depredations of Captain Humphrey Willis. This was the same Willis, who had previously been driven
out of Donegal by Hugh Roe O Donnell in February 1592. He was appointed sheriff in the spring of
1593 and quickly re established his pattern of raiding and spoiling that was familiar to the inhabitants
of Tirconnell the previous year. Willis had no legal reason for spoiling Maguire s lordship, and the
authorities in Dublin offered no justification. Hiram Morgan suggested that it may have been an
attempt to suppress a major client of the Hugh O Neill, second earl of Tyrone at a point when he was
cementing his power in Ulster. Nonetheless, Maguire was initially unable to oppose Willis with the
troops at his immediate disposal, but he was quickly reinforced with 100 shot, pikes and Scots
bowmen led by Tyrone s brother, Cormac Mac Baron, and then 120 shot under the commands of
Donnall and Donough O Hagan. Willis and his men took refuge in a church for six to seven days until

Investigation of Conscience and Man s Psych in To Build A Fire The underlying themes of morality
and importance of conscience in a time of desperation and trouble are intertwined in Jack London s
work To Build A Fire. The idea of instinct over intellect plays a huge role in this naturalistic story, but
perhaps the greater influence in the story is the power of morality in the final breaths of life. Through
the parallelism of existentialism and humanism, the battle with religious sin that makes us human, the
unveiling of the American dream in context to man s wants, and man s final judgment, London weaves
a story of survival that explores the persona of man in the midst of ... Show more content on

American freedom and individuality have often been expressed in, and celebrated by stories of
exploration, adventure, enterprise, and the pursuit of gain: the conquest of the prairie, the settling of
the West, the taming of the wilderness, the gold rush, and the mastery of nature through science,
industry, and technology (Bjorkland 3). Jack London s story offers us a picture of one such fortune
hunting, rugged individual. London took part in the Klondike gold rush, and though he failed as a
miner, he struck gold with stories drawing on the places and people he encountered during those hope
filled and brutal times in the Northwest Territory. In To Build A Fire, the man s passion to explore and
make a better life for himself was destroyed by the ultimate fate of nature. Jim Cullen explores the
meaning of the American Dream, or rather the several American Dreams that have both reflected and
shaped American identity from the Pilgrims to the present in his book, The American Dream. Cullen
notes that the United States, unlike most other nations, defines itself not on the facts of blood, religion,
language, geography, or shared history, but on a set of ideals expressed in the Declaration of
Independence and consolidated in the Constitution (Cullen 19). At the core of these ideals lies the
ambiguous concept of the American Dream, a concept that for better or worse has proven to

Cloned Meat
Cloned meat has been founded on December 28 2006, the United States Food Drug Administration
(FDA) gave preliminary approval for meat and dairy products from cloned animals to be sold as food
for human consumption. They also stated that labeling of cloned food would not be required because
of the approval of the FDA. When they stated that cloned meat didn t require labeling for their food
products, which automatically brought up a red flag because people should have the right to know
whether or not they re eating cloned offspring or home grown meat. How would that make you feel;
what would your reaction be? Well let me tell you; you might feel disgusted, clueless, or confused,

While reviewing this website, I ve come to understand that cloning meat is and has been treacherous
to us for providing harm to our farm animals by giving them high doses of different chemicals,
making them live with birth defects and making statements to deceive the public by saying it s a
harmless process that enhances and multiply the breed of animals when it really does not. The scariest
part to this issue is our animals suffer and so do we if we re meat consumers. (Dan Kedmey) Then
studies have proven that bacteriological meat contamination in the US, for the first time was enacted
in 1906 when the Pure Food and Drug Act was signed by laws in regards of banning infected and
mislabeled products from the interstate commerce. Observations about those risks were associated
with bacteriological meat contamination, and about how it should be regulated, has changed
significantly since then. This article focuses particularly on changes that have occurred in
bacteriological meat contamination standards in the US since the early 1980s when E. coli was for the
first time identified as a new foodborne pathogen associated with the consumption of undercooked
meat. The idea of cloning farm animals is to produce replicas of the animals with the highest
economic value, for example the fastest growing pigs or the highest yielding dairy cows to make a
profit off of. However the process of cloning itself causes our animals suffering. Animals with the
highest economic value are prone to developing severe health problems, pushed to their physical
limits; they are destined to a lifetime of suffering. The Cloning equals Cruelty campaign highlighted
intrinsic animal welfare issues for selective breeding in animals for food, meat and dairy. Research
also shows that many cloned farm animals are born with deformed organs and live short and miserable

The Medicines Of Medieval Medicine And The Black Death
Medieval Medicine
Medieval Medicine was basic in an era when terrible illnesses such as the Black Death were killing
nearly one third of the population. No one had any idea what caused illnesses and diseases, such as the
Black Death. There were no antibiotics or vaccines thus it was almost impossible to cure illness and
diseases.
Bloodletting was a popular method of restoring a patient s health and humors . Early surgery, often
done by barbers, occurred without anaesthesia.
Often medicines were made from herbs, spices and resins. The medicine was applied in drinks, pills,
washes, baths, rubs, poultices, purges and ointments. Which sometimes themselves contained fatal
ingredients.
Medicine used to treat some specific illnesses
Medieval Medicine to treat the Black Death
The Black Death held a mortality rate of between 30 and 40 per cent. Victims had no idea what had
caused the disease. And neither did the doctors in Medieval Times. The Black Death was treated by
lancing the buboes and applying a warm poultice of butter, onion and garlic. Various other remedies
were tried including tobacco, arsenic, lily root and even dried toad.
Medieval Medicine to treat Headache and Aching joints
Head pains were treated with sweet smelling herbs such as rose, lavender, sage, and bay. A mixture of
henbane and hemlock were applied to aching joints. Coriander was used to reduce a fever. Medieval

Recollection In Meno
In Meno, Plato introduces the theory that knowledge comes by recollection. Through the character of
Socrates, he presents this idea, and his argument deserves some clarification and explanation.
Plato draws a sharp distinction between knowledge, which is certain, and mere opinion, which is not
certain. Opinions derive from the shifting world of sensation; knowledge derives from the world of
timeless forms, or essences. The Platonic doctrine of recollection is the idea that we are born
possessing all knowledge and our realisation of that knowledge is contingent on our discovery of it.
Whether the doctrine should be taken literally or not is a subject of continuous debate. The doctrine
implies that nothing is ever learned from scratch rather, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the idea that knowledge requires experiencing something for yourself. For example, Plato
thinks that in order to know the way to Larissa it is necessary to have travelled the route yourself.
Similarly, he thinks, in order to know a philosophical truth you must have worked through the issue
yourself, so that you can grasp how this truth connects with other things that you believe. This notion
implies that knowledge is not something that we can absorb, unthinkingly, from people around us;
from a certain point of view, it is not incorrect.
Furthermore, Socrates sees knowledge to be better than true opinion, because true opinion can escape
the mind and thus isn t worth much at least until one ties it down by giving an account of the reason
why it matters or why it is true. Therefore, justified true belief is knowledge, because it arises out of
recollection. As such, it can be said that Plato believes that knowledge is prized more than correct
opinion, and that knowledge differs from correct opinion in being tied down.
As well as that, Meno proposes an idea that goodness could be taught if it was knowledge as long as
there are teachers to do so. There are none and therefore, virtue cannot be taught and it cannot be
knowledge yet it is a good thing. In conclusion, the dispute between Meno and Socrates boils down to
the agreement that correct guidance is a result of knowledge and true belief, and is as such both useful

Personal Note On Instant Messaging
I. Related Work Instant messaging (IM) is a type of online chat which offers real time text
transmission over the Internet. Most popular network IM system: AOL Instant Messenger (AIM),
Yahoo! Messenger (YMSG),and Microsoft Messenger(MSN).are discussed. A. AOL Instant
Messenger AIM defines different types of servers. Some of them are login, BOS icon, chat room
setup, user search and chat room hosting. AIM uses client server architecture for normal operations
but uses a peer to peer approach for voice chat sessions. B. Yahoo! Messenger (YMSG) YMSG takes
the symmetric approach. YMSG also uses client server architecture for normal operations as well as
voice chat service. YMSG voice traffic is routed by a centralized voice chat server. Clients need only
one type of server and then route all kinds of activities though that particular server. While each has
been designed and implemented separately, the total group exhibits same characteristics with respect
to network and system architecture. C. Microsoft Messenger (MSN) MSN defines three types:
dispatch, notification, and switch board. MSN also uses a client server architecture for normal
operations and peer to peer for voice chat communication. Most IM systems have mechanisms for
maintaining lists of friends. These are typically called buddy lists, allow lists, and block lists. Most IM
systems use centralized clusters to provide presence services. Jennings et al. [5] presented Taxonomy

Low Velocity Impact and Impact after Compression in Cork Based Composite material
ABSTRACT:
Experiments are carried out in the investigation to find out the role of cork as an ideal core material,
which is used as a shield plate in the front of land military vehicles to verify the energy absorption and
damage tolerance. Composite materials are used in various industries these days due to its high
strength to weight ratio putting them into light weight applications. Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion
Method is chosen to manufacture the laminate. Specimens are cut according to American Society for
Testing and Materials Standards are used. Low velocity impact is carried out on the specimens to
observe the energy absorption capabilities of the specimens with two different testing variables i.e.,
energy level and amount of the viscoelastic material. Afterwards, Compression after Impact test is
carried out to study the Damage tolerance of the impacted specimen. The study of all the results from
the above tests shows us the energy absorption and damage tolerance with the presence of cork as a
core material. Further studies can be done in different energy levels, different viscoelastic materials
and also different fibres and resins. INTRODUCTION:
Recent years, high modulus and high strength was the main concern of the development of advance
performance of the composite materials. High strength is not only the objective but also the
performance of the material along with ability

3 main topics to describe the theme of this book. The first main point is the fact that Bilbo Baggins,
who is the main character of the book, is sheltered until Gandalf, a wizard, and his dwarf friends invite
Bilbo on an adventure. The second point, is when Bilbo starts to find his true braveness. He does some
things that bring out and show off how he can be brave and he s not just a cowardly Hobbit. Finally,
the last main point is how Bilbo is wise and trusted among his fellow wizard, and dwarves. In the

Further along the story the Dwarves go into a cave where Bilbo finds a ring. This ring happens to
belong to Gollum who likes to eat anything he sees. Then Gollum and Bilbo run into each other and
they have a riddle contest. Bilbo ends up accidently beating Gollum in the contest(71)You can start to
tell from Bilbo s actions that he is getting more and more brave. He does not start to freak out like he
used to when something went wrong but he calms down and breaks down the situation. His excelling
bravery is in turn moving the story due to him being able to adventure just like a dwarf.Bilbo is
getting used to doing some daring things. He pick pocketed a big, scary, hungry troll even though it
could have easily killed him.Bilbo is starting to gain a good reputation among his friends due to his
bravery. Because Bilbo has shown that he can do things other Hobbits can not, he has gained trust and
wisdom from his friendsA example of this wisdom coming into play was when Bilbo and Gollum
were having a riddle battle, and Bilbo ended up tricking Gollum on this on riddle, what have I got in
my pocket! Bilbo ended up winning this battle and did not get eaten(71). Also, Bilbo ends up getting

The Impact Of The Colorado Gold Rush In Colorado
If you had the opportunity to get rich from gold, would you? Would you be willing to leave everything
you have behind to move thousands of miles across the country just for gold? In 1859, the answer for
many people was yes. Word of gold found throughout Colorado spread across the country and
launched the Pike s Peak Gold Rush or today known as the Colorado Gold Rush. There are several
significant events in Colorado history that have had a huge impact on the state we know today. The
Colorado Gold Rush, in 1859, was the most significant event in Colorado History for several reasons;
the rush attracted thousands of people to our state, initiated the mining of other resources, succored
farming and ranching throughout the state and helped to boost the economy of the towns here in
Colorado. The gold rush had a massive impact on several aspects of Colorado during the time and
these aspects continue to be apart of Colorado still today. Because of the Colorado Gold Rush, people
swarmed into the state in hopes of becoming rich. Even though many of these people were go backers
, the people that did stay helped with the development of mining towns all throughout the state. A Pike
s Peak journalist described the flocking of people claiming thousands from the farther East swarmed
into the Missouri valley towns, and enough hardy souls crossed the Plains in the fall of 1858 to give
the newly founded towns of Auraria and Denver at the mouth of Cherry creek on the South Platte

Myers-Briggs Assessment
After taking a Myers Briggs assessment my mind has been changed. The very first time I took any
kind of personal assessment was my second year of college. I had taken my general education classes
and it was time to pick a major. The thing is, what 19 year old know what they want to do for the rest
of their lives? None I tell you! So I went to an advisor and was given the test. Many seemingly
random questions the results were in; you can be a doctor or lawyer or astronaut they said! The least
helpful 45 minutes of my life I gave to that advisor. Taking the Myers Briggs seemed no different. A
long test with seemingly unsystematic questions about nothing specific. This time, for the first time, I
got it. After I read the results I understood. This test didn t try to tell me what career I should select, or
what degree to pick. It simply gave me results about me. My result gave me a type ISTP, where each
letter stands for personality traits. Introversion, Sensing, Thinking, and Perception. To me that didn t

Panama Canal Analysis
Major events leading to the construction of the Panama Canal:
The French impose an effort on the construction of the canal but end in a dejected failure.
Within the 1900s, John Hay and Julian Pauncefote come to an agreement that allows the United States
to control the construction and administration of the canal without fortifying it (Hay Pauncefote
Treaty).
Theodore Roosevelt then becomes president establishing great significance towards the idea that the
United States should behold total management over the canal.
The second treaty accomplishes the goal that allows the United States fortification of the canal.
Due to the lower demands introduced to the senate along with the natural disaster of what Mt.
Momotombo could cause, congress favors Panama.
Hay then offers negotiations towards Colombia, but the agreement is rejected.
The superiorities in Washington then exposed the idea that Panama could resolve the Colombian
conflict if they established and won independence as a whole.
A Panamanian group then plans to initiate a revolution with over 500 rebels.
United States Naval ships stop Colombian troops from interfering with Panamanian rebels.
In one day with the help of the U.S. and its naval ships, Panama is granted independence from
Colombia.
A new treaty is established that explains and distinguishes the rights for building the canal while also
protecting Panama.
The canal is then built and finalized after seven years of Roosevelt s passing.

The Contemporary Code Of Chivalry In Marie De France
Marie de France wrote a collection of poems during the high middle ages that reflect the
contemporary code of chivalry. Her poetry was classified as courtly love because it mostly involved
knights in adulterous relationships with noble ladies. Her collection of twelve poems have themes of
love, loyalty, etc. and how they relate to the codes of chivalry that serves as a guide for how a knight
should act in order to be honorable. The code of chivalry was created to make warfare among
European knights more pleasant. They would give each other time to prepare for fights and treated
knights they captured as guests that had to pay a ransom rather than prisoners. Following these rules
gave knights more honor, which they held in very high esteem. This code included different values
that should characterize a honorable knight. Another way to achieve this honor was by dedicating
themselves to a noble lady who they would serve with faithful adoration. This concept was the subject
of Marie de France s courtly love poetry. De France uses characters to highlight the values of chivalry
in her poems. For example, in the poem Lanval the knight by the same name demonstrates generosity
and hospitality as well as loyalty to his lord king Arthur. Arthur however is envious of him and does
not grant him the land or wealth he has earned. Here, Marie is painting the hero of the story Lanval, as
a chivalrous character while depicting king Arthur as failing to properly serve his subject and thus is

The Reality Of Reality Tv Essay
It is a given that the culture we consume shapes who we are, more specifically what we view on
television shapes the content of our minds. It is also generally known that children can be easily
influenced by what they see on television. Reality TV is no exception to this rule. It may appear that
reality TV is a benign phenomenon but it is in fact a virus that has quickly diseased our society. More
specifically, it attracts girls most mercilessly by affecting them negatively as to how they perceive
themselves. Indeed, girls who watch reality TV learn that deceit and meanness is normal behaviour in
order to achieve success, begin to self objectify more and have a higher expectation of more drama
and conflict in their lives as well. The reality of reality TV is that it negatively portrays females. Is
there no end to the onslaught on the female gender by television?
According to Melissa Henson, director of communications and public education for the Parents
Television Council, Because girls are seeing people behaving in a negative way on reality programs,
they tend to accept that that s normative behaviour. (Semigram, 1) That may be fine when the
behaviour is positive but what of the behaviour viewed on reality TV? Watching a heavy diet of
meanness and lying in order for females to get ahead has a horrible impact on girls. Does reality TV
really portray meanness and deceit? Yes, it unquestionably does! In fact, an extensive survey done by

These article took similar view points in terms of how the given data was presented. Both authors used
a data rich lens to look at both the positive and negative outcomes of using palm oil. The first article
was interesting because it presented a series of facts supported by numerous amounts of data to
support these facts. Because the article was written in 2007, it seemed like the data was outdated and
the numbers today would be even more staggering. This addition of current data to the article as a
follow up would only add to the persuasiveness of the article because as a society we have only made
the amount of pollution, overexploitation, and land degradation worse in the last ten years. The second
article presented their data both in terms of ecological and economic impact. They claim that the
production of palm oil is the leading cause of climate change today. I disagree with this statement.

Sully Combines Eastwood
Sully Combines Eastwood, Hanks, and Heroism into a Superb Experience For his dramatization of
The Miracle on the Hudson , director Clint Eastwood casts Tom Hanks as the eponymous captain
Chesley Sully Sullenberger, and it is a potent combination. The film, simply titled Sully, collects
powerful performances around a singular event and explores the immediate aftermath of Sully s
decision to land a plane on the Hudson river. Remarkably, Sully isn t a simple disaster movie or ballad
of heroism, but instead a considered look at the weight of decision, the ascent of an everyman to high
public esteem, and the importance of training and expertise. Though the film pushes a broad pseudo
villain on the audience and suffers from a poor performance in some spots, the overall structure of the
narrative, weight of the themes, and power of the performances merge into a satisfying experience.
The essential plot of Sully is fairly straightforward, but there is more to the narrative than a simple
plane crash. Though the crash I obviously central to the story, most of the ... Show more content on

Sully s wife Lorraine, played by Laura Linney. Generally, Linney is a fine actor, but there is
something off about her performance here. It may be that she only ever interacts with Sully over the

Contributive Causes Of The American Revolution
Without the American Revolution, the United States would not exist.
Before the American Revolution, the nation was a collection of 13 British colonies that were united by
the British monarchy. During this time it was ruled by British Parliament which was 3500 miles away
and a journey by ship that was 27 days long in the ideal situation but could be up to 6 8 weeks. All of
the colonies with the exception of Georgia were formed by people trying to escape some form of
persecution. One of the main contributive factors to the American Revolution was the Intolerable Acts
(or otherwise known in Great Britian as the Coercive Acts); which included the Boston Port Act, the
Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, and the Quartering Act.
The Boston Port Act was passed by parliament on March 31, 1774. This Act was designed to punish
the inhabitants of Boston, Massachusetts for the incident that would later become known as the
Boston Tea Party. The British Parliament demanded that the city s residents pay for the nearly $1
million worth (in today s money) of tea dumped in to Boston Harbor during the Boston Tea Party. This
act closed the port of Boston so tightly that the colonists could not even bring hay in from
Charlestown to give to their starving horses. Only food and firewood were permitted into the port. The
events leading up to this act included the Boston Massacre which occurred on December 16, 1773.
This Act was the first, and the easiest to enforce of

Execution and Results in a Crisis Situation
1. In the Kirkpatrick and Shane article, several leaders are mentioned including President George W.
Bush, Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff, and FEMA Director Michael D. Brown. Briefly
evaluate each of these leaders on their overall effectiveness at Managing Execution and Driving for
Results.

A dependence grows between employee and leader in which the employee has grown accustomed to
the leader giving orders and directions, and makes every effort to follow such guidance to the letter.
This dependence does not bode well in situations of high stress and shortened reaction times. As
General Honoré stated, the first part of the leader s job is to set people on the right path ( A Military
General s Leadership Lessons, 2009). This happens when the leader gives the initial order. In this
case, it was to evacuate the people out of harms way. The plan was then laid out for the authorities to
execute.
What happened, was that the dependance the authorities placed on the plan of execution did not allow
themselves to modify the plan of execution when the situation changed. The leaders were bossing the
authorities around in such a manner that the right path and desired end result were forgotten. When
this occurs, and the execution loses all forward motion because the initial plan is not being followed to
the letter, the leaders who were barking orders have to devide their time up between coming up with a
new plan and then desiminating it to the proper authorities. A leader who motivates the execution,
works WITH the execution. In order to motivate, a leader needs to be involved with those he or she

Can the Subaltern Speak Summary
Can the Subaltern Speak? Summary Gayatri Spivak Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak is an unsettling voice
in literary theory and especially, postcolonial studies. She has describes herself as a practical
deconstructionist feminist Marxist and as a gadfly . She uses deconstruction to examine how truth is
constructed and to deploy the assertions of one intellectual and political position (such as Marxism) to
interrupt or bring into crisis another (feminism, for example). In her work, she combines passionate
denunciations of the harm done to women, non Europeans, and the poor by the privileged West with a
persistent questioning of the grounds on which radical critique takes its stand. Her continual
interrogation of assumptions can make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As poststructuralism would have it, human consciousness is constructed discursively. Our subjectivity
is constructed by the shifting discourses of power which endlessly speak through us, situating us here
and there in particular positions and relations. In these terms we are not the authors of ourselves. We
do not construct our identities, we have it written for us; the subject cannot be sovereign over the
construction of selfhood. Instead the subject is decentered, in that its consciousness is always being
constructed from positions outside of itself. It follows then that the individual is not a transparent
representation of the self but an effect of discourse. Spivak argues that surprisingly for these figures,
when Foucault and Deleuze talks about oppressed groups such as the working classes they fall back
into precisely these uncritical notions of sovereign subjects by restoring to them a fully centred
consciousness. In addition they also assume that the writing of intellectuals such as themselves can
serve as a transparent medium through which the voices of the oppressed can be represented. The
intellectual is cast as a reliable mediator for the voices of the oppressed, a mothpiece through which
the oppressed can clearly speak. Spivak articulates her reasons for her worries in the first part of the
essay, applying MICHEL FOUCAULT s understanding of epistemic violence to the remotely
orchestrated, far flung, and heterogeneous project to

African American Power In The 18th Century
From the 15th century to about the 18th century there was a struggle between European powers for
control over the American continents. These struggles were faced by the French, English, Portuguese,
and the Spanish Empire. The European powers forced cultural and religious ethics into the Native and
African societies. By decimating native population with famine and war, while forcing western
Africans into immigration. The Jesuits, French missionaries, unlike other European powers they first
tried to understand the ways of the Natives before they forced their customs on them. British settlers

Natives. In the 14th century, a few Portuguese ships ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

as mentioned in the primary source Gottlieb Mittelberger On the Misfortune indentured Servants,
When they have come to an agreement, it happens that adult persons bind themselves in writing to
serve 3, 4, 5 or 6 years for the amount due by them, according to their age and strength. Usually, the
debt that they acquired was for the ship ride from their land to the Americas. It was better to be an
indentured servant versus what was to come which was slavery and cheap labor for little to nothing in
return. In the primary source document Virginia slave laws it mentions how slavery began, Historians
now know that small numbers of Africans lived in Virginia before 1619, the year a Dutch ship sold
some twenty blacks (probably from the West Indies) to the colonists. With the introduction of slavery

common and normal for The English and other European powers to own slaves. Such as the Spanish,
the famous conquistador Hernan Cortes who created the encomienda system. This was a grant of
Native American labor and he received about 1000,000 to work on his estate. This lead to the creation
of haciendas which were large plots of land that provided food for the colony and they were worked
by Natives. The slaves were as well transported overseas usually from West Central Africa and
Nigeria they as well as some of the indentured servants had to endure the poor living conditions on the
ship. Slavery was the biggest form of a cheap labor system which benefited the European powers

Plaintiff 2: Berkson argues that an arbitration provision was not present in September 2012 when
plaintiff Berkson signed up for GoGo s Wi Fi. Such a provision was first inserted into the company s
terms of use in December 2012. Berkson claims that his credit card was charged for GoGo s services
from September 2012 until December 2012. Berkson first contacted GoGo to notify them of the time
period in which he was charged for the service but did not use it. He requested a refund but GoGo
denied the request. Berkson s credit card company, American Express, later refunded him.
Like Welsh, Berkson also claims that he never received any form of communication from GoGo
notifying him of the automatic renewal subscription for in flight Wi Fi. The layout of GoGo s
webpage slightly changed from August of 2011. When Berkson subscribed to the services, there was a

The Yama Glass Five-Cuppa
Have you heard many stories about the fuss taken to make a perfect cup of coffee using a siphon

Glass break easily, either from a knock, a fall or a sudden change in temperature. So you ve got to
make sure the Yama goes through none of that. This means handling, washing, drying and storing it
very carefully.
Let s talk about washing up. Coffee grounds that stick to the funnel and filter have to be scraped out
(use your hand for efficiency) and the cloth filter needs to be rinsed thoroughly to make sure all of the
coffee grounds are washed away any residue left will turn bad and this will affect the taste and quality
of your next pot.
While using this very manual, very time consuming coffee brewer, you should avoid adding too much
water and only apply low to medium heat. For it to work properly, make sure the upper funnel is fitted
snugly to the bottom chamber to properly form a vacuum seal you can also try to wet the rubber seal
to help attach both parts together.
Even though I would not use the Yama Glass Coffee Siphon on a busy morning, the taste of the coffee
is worth all the trouble to use it on a lazy weekend, and it s certainly worth the trouble for the theatrics
and amazed looks on the faces of dinner guests (make sure you ve gotten the method and brew right
first). Click here to find out more about: Yama Glass Coffee

Shel Silverstein Influences
Shel Silverstein is a popular American cartoonist, singer, songwriter, playwright and author. He is
mostly known for his children books including the popular, The Giving Tree and Where the Sidewalk

sappy endings of happy children stories. However, he was eventually convinced by a friend to
transform stereotypical children s book and he able to become successful in creating clever and
humorous poems and books.

he began writing music and poems for different magazines. When Silverstein first began his career in

Before this he viewed children literature as too sweet and condescending with nothing but happy

he did not like. And that is just what he did; he reversed the idiotic stories into more realistic

that he just didn t like that children literature that was out there and wanted to see

Colin Singleton Character Analysis
Author s purpose John Green s main purpose in writing this novel was to say it s okay to not know
who you are. Colin Singleton was seventeen and panicking because he doesn t know who he is. He
just got dumped his nineteenth Katherine and has fallen into a depression, Colin Singleton is nothing
but a brain without a Katherine by his side. Colin finds out that just because he s a former child
prodigy, that doesn t mean he s going to be a genius in his adult years to come. He has trouble
accepting that because he wants to be remembered as someone important.
Major Characters To begin, at the start of the novel Colin Singleton has dated nineteen girls named
Katherine, because girls named Katherine were his type . He has also been dumped by all of these
Katherine s, except number three. Then, at the end of the novel he s dating a girl named Lindsey , not
Katherine. Which is probably his eureka moment that he s been looking for ever since he was a little
boy. That s probably the biggest character change in this book.
Major Theme The overall theme of the book is finding yourself and who you are. There are several
small themes that are seen throughout the book, one of those is love and another is being remembered.
Colin makes it a priority to have a Katherine because without one, he doesn t know how to function
correctly. Without a Katherine he doesn t even know who he is. He starts having trouble finding
himself after he gets dumped by Katherine number nineteen.

Aristotle s Use Of Ethos Pathos Logos
Throughout my studies at Seton Hall, particularly in Journey of Transformation and Christianity
Culture and Dialogue we covered the works of Aristotle. It is interesting to learn how the Greeks were
among the first to use persuasion. Aristotle defined rhetoric as the faculty of observing in any given
case, the available means of persuasion (17). Aristotle believed that persuasion consist of artistic and
inartistic proofs. When giving a persuasive speech we are able to control certain aspects of it such as
the delivery, evidence and word usage which are the artistic proofs. The persuader has the ability to

Then we have Pathos which uses an emotional appeal in order to get an emotional response. Recently,
Texas suffered a suffered a severe catastrophe because of Hurricane Harvey. This led to many homes,
buildings and families torn apart. Recent Commercial Ads are depicting these images in order for the
public to feel sorrow and donate funds for the cause. Many individuals do not want to live with the
guilt of not helping out and so they decide to donate for a good cause, thus eliminating that regret.
Finally, we have this idea of logos which is the idea of using logical or rational appeals (17). Lagos
uses things such as polls, facts or statistics to appeal to the audience. A recent example of Lagos would
be the campaign promises that President Donald Trump made to the American people. One of them
was the he promised a 4% GDP growth during his tenure. For investors or the ordinary person, this

The Cold War Era During World War II
The Cold War Era that followed the end of World War II was unlike any Americans had seen before.
After defeating Germany and its allies in the war, the United States faced a change on the home front:
young Americans rushed into marriage and parenthood in unprecedented numbers. In Homeward
Bound: American Families in the Cold War Era, Elaine Tyler May describes these changes from the
end of the war through the early 1960s. The author makes a compelling range of arguments about the
changes that affected Americans during this period. Mainly, May argues that the domestic containment
that arose after World War II promoted the new dynamic of a suburban lifestyle, in part because of the
increasing fright of looming communism during the Cold War Era. May coins the term domestic
containment as the center of her argument in her book Homeward Bound. Domestic containment
refers to the happy American suburban lifestyle home that was reinforced by popular culture because
of the scare of communism. All of May s other arguments in the book hinge on her larger focus on
domestic containment being Americans overriding ideology during the early Cold War. May states,
The self contained home held out the promise of security in insecure world. It also offered a vision of
abundance and fulfillment. As the cold war began, young postwar Americans were homeward bound.
It had become evident to Americans that the world outside the natural boundaries of the country was

Irony in Hamlet Essay
Many literary critics point to the considerable irony that exists in Shakespeare s Hamlet. This paper

Howard Felperin comments on Hamlet s ironic consciousness of the fact that he is unable to quickly

present essay. He imagines Shakespeare grappling with his archaic sources in the attempt to
naturalize, rationalize, and psychologize generally speaking, to streamline and neoclassisize them and

The play begins with the changing of the sentinels on a guard platform of the castle of Elsinore in
Denmark. Recently the spectral likeness of dead King Hamlet has appeared to the sentinels. Tonight
the ghost appears again to Barnardo, Marcellus and Horatio, a very close friend of Hamlet. Horatio
and Marcellus exit the ramparts of Elsinore intending to enlist the aid of Hamlet, who is home from
school, dejected by the o erhasty marriage of his mother to his uncle less than two months after the
funeral of Hamlet s father (Gordon 128). There is a post coronation social gathering of the court,
where Claudius pays tribute to the memory of his deceased brother, the former king, and then, along
with Queen Gertrude, conducts some items of business, for example dispatching Cornelius and
Voltemand to Norway to settle the Fortinbras affair, addressing Polonius and Laertes on the subject of
the latter s return to school abroad. Right at the outset of the drama, there is irony exhibited in the
manner in which Shakespeare characterizes King Claudius he is simply stupendous and yet, shortly
hereafter, he is revealed as a truly evil, thoroughly diabolical sort. George Lyman Kittredge, in his
book, Five Plays of Shakespeare, describes the Bard s excellent characterization of Claudius:

Adolf Hitler And Stalin Research Paper
Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin both killed innocent people. Each leader had different motives that
their background can help us comprehend. Hitler was born in Branau Am Inn, Austria, on April 20,
1889. He was one of six children and considered smart for his young age. His family moved from
Austria to Germany while he was young. His father, Alois, and he did not see eye to eye. He began to
resent his father which led to him being alone. Adolf went to a Jewish colony which was called Linz,
for four years before dropping out to be a painter. He was rejected not once but twice from Viennese
Academy of Fine Arts. Adolfs mother then passed away in December of 1908 to cancer which was
another disappointment to young Hitler. Without a home for a few

Gallstones
Cholecystitis
Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder. Inflammation usually forms when a gallstone blocks
the cystic duct that transports bile. Cholecystitis is the most common problem resulting from
gallbladder stones (90% of the cases). Cholecystitis affects women more often than men and is more
likely to occur after age 40. People who have a history of gallstones are at increased risk for
cholecystitis. Cholecystitis has an increased prevalence among people of Scandinavian descent, Pima
Indians, and Hispanic populations. It affected 20 million people with a mortality record of 1,092
deaths in 2004. Hospitalizations total up 622,000 in the same year and over 700,000 have undergone
cholecystectomies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pain can last anywhere between several minutes to several hours. Warning signs are abdominal pain so
intense that you can t sit still or find a comfortable position, yellowing of your skin and the whites of
your eyes, clay colored stool and high fever with chills. Complications that can occur from gallstones
if left untreated are inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), blockage of pancreatic duct
(gallstone pancreatitis), rupturing of the gallbladder, peritonitis, liver damage, cirrhosis and
gallbladder cancer.
When gallstones are suspected to be the cause of symptoms, the doctor is likely to do an ultrasound
exam or CT Scan, the most sensitive and specific test for gallstones. Other exams that may be
performed are a Cholescintigraphy a.k.a. HIDA (hepatobiliary iminodiactec acid) Scan, ERCP
(endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography), and blood tests. Treatments include Surgery and
medications to dissolve the gallstones. Nearly all cholecystectomies are performed with laparoscopy.
If tests show the gallbladder has severe inflammation, infection, or scarring from other operations, the
surgeon may perform open surgery to remove the gallbladder. In some cases, open surgery is planned;
however, sometimes these problems are discovered during the laparoscopy and the surgeon must make
a larger incision. If gallstones

Importance of Performance Appraisal
A major challenge for every business owner or manager is to have employees who are passionate
about what they do and constantly strives to perform at their best. Many managers take the integrated
approach known as Performance Management, to manage the performance, consisting of setting goals,
training employees and then appraising and rewarding them (hrm). It can be explained as a process
that consolidates goal setting, performance appraisal and development into single, common system,
the aim of which is to ensure that the employee s performance is supporting the strategic aims. (hrm

Ultimately, goal of Brett and Simone, when conducting performance appraisals should be to impart a
true appraisal of the employee s performance (including behavior and attitude) from management s
perspective.
:
Employees typically are anxious at the prospect of receiving negative comments on their work, and
managers may be uncomfortable offering that criticism. When done correctly, however, appraisals can
be positive experiences that motivate staff members to reach their potential and achieve their
professional goals.
In addition to assessing past performance, appraisal meetings provide an ideal opportunity to look at
future objectives. Encourage employees to stretch their abilities, yet make sure goals are realistic.
Performance evaluations allow employer to reinforce expectations and communicate with your staff
one on one about their career objectives and simultaneously provides an overview to establish the
standards of remunerating employees.
An increasingly large number of corporations have explored how rewards, particularly money, could

Reflection Of Leadership And Leadership In The Honors College
Throughout this semester, I learned so much and gained so much confidence in my ability to lead. I
had never led through the Honors College before this semester nor had I ever felt so involved and
included within the Honors College. Being an Honors Year One mentor has allowed me to grow in
ways that I would have never grown if it was not for this experience. Through my experience, I have
made friends, realized what all the Honors College has to offer and connect freshmen with others. I
learned how I lead best, how to not always be the leader, what my strengths are and how to use them
to their full potential, and what needs to happen differently next semester in hopes to improve the
experience for the freshmen.
I thought our mentor class was absolutely phenomenal. Tiffany continuously led us well and reigned
us in well when we needed to get down to business. Her leadership, council, and example made a
difference for me when leading my freshmen. She was also very encouraging, which was much
needed. At the beginning, I was intimidated by Rebecca being in our class each week. However, the
intimidation faded, and I quickly learned to appreciate her. She had many great suggestions as well as
a great insight. I may be an extrovert, but on the first day of our mentor class, I was very intimidated
and nervous. I had no earthly idea what to expect. However, as it is now the end of the semester, I am
honestly sad the class had to come to an end. I learned so much from the other

Creating Opportunities For Students Proficiency ...
I understand the need to create opportunities for my students to show their proficiency in directing
their own learning and have done so within my classroom environment. I am aware that as the
Learning Manager this requires me to have a clear understanding of each student s strengths, needs,
and interests. This is needed in order to create a diverse and relevant classroom experience that
revolves around the curriculum. Please see my examples of such opportunities below:
EXAMPLE 1
During diagnostic testing of a particular year 8 class the reading and spelling levels of certain students
were well below average. These results were amplified when it was obvious that the attendance within
the class was sporadic and behaviour unruly. These combined, led to a poor attitude towards
classroom participation and assessment tasks. The action displayed below was created after my EPL 3
placement when it became evident that the classroom needed consistent routine and positive
reinforcement in order to encourage student participation.
The required action manifested in the form of motivating student interest, learning and differentiation
in the classroom. The Year 8 students needed a form of routine within the class and a point of interest
which would be renewed systematically throughout the term. Thus, the rules and expectations chart
was created in tandem with the students, in order for the students to take ownership of their behavior
and attitudes within the classroom.

  • 2. Atrial Septal Disease Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are a deficiency in the wall between the right and left atrium of the heart (5). ASDs account for 10% of all congenital heart defects(19) and 30% of those diagnosed in adulthood (20). Definitive diagnosis is by transthoracic echocardiography, though signs of an ASD can be found on physical examination, electrocardiography and chest radiography (21). There are four types of ASD, classified according to their position in the interatrial septum (Figure 2): Ostium secundum defects which represent 80% of all ASDs and are located in the region of the fossa ovalis Ostium primum defects which are located in the lower portion of the septum, adjacent to the atrioventricular (AV) valve Sinus venosus defects which are located at the junction of the superior/inferior caval veins Coronary sinus defects. While coronary sinuses are not true defects in the atrial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Exertional dyspnoea and fatigue are the most common symptoms. These are caused by a left to right shunt, when the connection between the two atria allows blood to pass from the left side of the heart to the right. This occurs because the pressure in the left side of the heart is naturally higher than the right. The extra blood from the left atrium overloads the right atrium and the right ventricle, causing right heart dilation, and subsequent heart failure (5). If left untreated, patients can develop reversal of the ASD, resulting in a right to left shunt; this is known as Eisenmenger s syndrome. Other complications include atrial tachyarrhythmias or stroke (21, 22). A patient is indicated for closure if they experience symptoms, irrespective of age, to reduce subsequent morbidity and mortality (21). To reduce this risk, closure should be considered in patients at risk of a paradoxical embolism, such as patients undergoing pacemaker implantation or professional divers (5, ... • 3. The True Nature Of Cheerleading Essay As human beings, it is natural to judge people who are different than ourselves. Most often these judgements are based off of common beliefs, or stereotypes. Stereotypes apply to every group, from the slow moving elderly to lively cheerleaders. Usually these beliefs do not describe every person in a group, but they all receive the same labels. Cheerleaders make up one group that is commonly stereotyped, but many people don t know the true nature of cheerleading. Countless stereotypes that I have about cheerleaders have been ingrained into my mind by the media, and from personal experience. From what I had observed in high school, cheerleaders are the popular girls with plenty of friends. Not being associated with a cheerleader meant that you weren t on the map. Promiscuity was also an extremely prominent stereotype in high school, which had always shocked me since the cheerleaders seemed like a nasty group of girls. Cheerleaders also have a reputation of being air headed or simply not intelligent. As an outsider, they did not give me the impression of being book smart, especially at my high school. Another stereotype that I have is that cheerleaders aren t entirely athletic. Yes, cheerleading is a sport. Yes, it can be dangerous and it does take work. However, cheering doesn t look like it requires the same level of effort and intensity as multiple other sports. These are all widespread beliefs about cheerleaders that I have come to expect from them. Along with some of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Heat Waves lead to illnesses and could be fatal with prolonged exposure to these extreme conditions. High humidity can increase the heat even more. Heat is very deadly because it is a silent killer. Heat related illness and death can occur due to exposure in one day however it has a cumulative effect on the body. It is a threat to the public health in 1995 between 14 and 20 July 485 Chicago residents died directly from heat related causes. Over a thousand were admitted to inpatient units in local hospitals due to for heat related illness like heatstroke, dehydration and heat exhaustion. Heatstroke victims suffered permanent damaged and loss their independence along with multisystem failure. Thousands of other Chicago residents were treated at local emergency rooms. When the heat subsided epidemiologist compiled statistics on the mortality patterns during July. They factored in the deaths of people that had not been taken to the Medical Examiner s Office. The death count based on medical autopsies determines between 14 and 20 July 739 more Chicago residents died than in a typical week in July. Heat wave deaths occur more in cities. The infrastructure of a typical city has brick and mortar buildings, asphalt streets, and tar roofs. As a result, during the daytime they absorb heat and slowly release it at night. • 5. Theme Of Birds In Macbeth In William Shakespeare s Macbeth, Shakespeare often uses a motif of birds in order to foreshadow future events and relationships. Shakespeare achieves this by likening two influential characters, Macbeth and Macduff, to an owl and a crow, respectively, as well as using references to other types of birds in order to set a tone. The first major mention of birds occurs when Duncan and his entourage arrive at Dunsinane, about which Banquo remarks that The temple haunting martlet... Hath made his pendant bed and procreant cradle. / Where they most breed and haunt, I have observed / The air is delicate. (1.6.4 10). Shakespeare includes this detail in order to illustrate Dunsinane in a time of peace, before it becomes a beacon of violence and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the Great Metaphysical Chain of Being, the falcon is the supreme bird who rules over all of the others, with the owl ranking a few notches below it. The death of the falcon at the owl s hand illustrates that the natural order of things has been disrupted, a situation that bears resemblance to what has just occurred at Dunsinane, with king Duncan having been murdered by Macbeth, a man who was beneath him in terms of power. This parallel between the upset in nature and the upset that occurred at Dunsinane reinforces the idea that the owl symbolizes Macbeth. In the second scene of the third act, after speaking with the murderers in order to plan Banquo s death, Macbeth pronounces that night s black agents to their preys do rouse. The phrase night s black agents refers to a predator that hunts at night, which yet again is the owl, with Banquo likely being the metaphorical prey. This is probably the most blatant of the hints that the owl symbolizes Macbeth, as Macbeth makes this comment in full knowledge that Banquo will soon be murdered indirectly by his hand. In that same scene, the crow is first mentioned when Macbeth remarks upon how light thickens, and the crow makes wing to the rooky wood (3.2.50 51). This allusion to the crow is significant because it is here that the parallels between the crow and Macduff begin to form. Just a few scenes prior, in act two scene four, ... • 6. Maguire s Rebellion Research Paper The spark that ignited Maguire s discontent into open rebellion was the appointment and ensuing depredations of Captain Humphrey Willis. This was the same Willis, who had previously been driven out of Donegal by Hugh Roe O Donnell in February 1592. He was appointed sheriff in the spring of 1593 and quickly re established his pattern of raiding and spoiling that was familiar to the inhabitants of Tirconnell the previous year. Willis had no legal reason for spoiling Maguire s lordship, and the authorities in Dublin offered no justification. Hiram Morgan suggested that it may have been an attempt to suppress a major client of the Hugh O Neill, second earl of Tyrone at a point when he was cementing his power in Ulster. Nonetheless, Maguire was initially unable to oppose Willis with the troops at his immediate disposal, but he was quickly reinforced with 100 shot, pikes and Scots bowmen led by Tyrone s brother, Cormac Mac Baron, and then 120 shot under the commands of Donnall and Donough O Hagan. To Build A Fire Conscience Elizabeth Nevins Engl 203 Section 506 Dr. Cooper May/5/2015 Investigation of Conscience and Man s Psych in To Build A Fire The underlying themes of morality and importance of conscience in a time of desperation and trouble are intertwined in Jack London s work To Build A Fire. The idea of instinct over intellect plays a huge role in this naturalistic story, but perhaps the greater influence in the story is the power of morality in the final breaths of life. Through the parallelism of existentialism and humanism, the battle with religious sin that makes us human, the unveiling of the American dream in context to man s wants, and man s final judgment, London weaves a story of survival that explores the persona of man in the midst of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... American freedom and individuality have often been expressed in, and celebrated by stories of exploration, adventure, enterprise, and the pursuit of gain: the conquest of the prairie, the settling of the West, the taming of the wilderness, the gold rush, and the mastery of nature through science, industry, and technology (Bjorkland 3). Jack London s story offers us a picture of one such fortune hunting, rugged individual. London took part in the Klondike gold rush, and though he failed as a miner, he struck gold with stories drawing on the places and people he encountered during those hope filled and brutal times in the Northwest Territory. In To Build A Fire, the man s passion to explore and make a better life for himself was destroyed by the ultimate fate of nature. Jim Cullen explores the meaning of the American Dream, or rather the several American Dreams that have both reflected and shaped American identity from the Pilgrims to the present in his book, The American Dream. Cullen notes that the United States, unlike most other nations, defines itself not on the facts of blood, religion, language, geography, or shared history, but on a set of ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence and consolidated in the Constitution (Cullen 19). At the core of these ideals lies the ambiguous concept of the American Dream, a concept that for better or worse has proven to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Cloned Meat Cloned meat has been founded on December 28 2006, the United States Food Drug Administration (FDA) gave preliminary approval for meat and dairy products from cloned animals to be sold as food for human consumption. They also stated that labeling of cloned food would not be required because of the approval of the FDA. When they stated that cloned meat didn t require labeling for their food products, which automatically brought up a red flag because people should have the right to know whether or not they re eating cloned offspring or home grown meat. While reviewing this website, I ve come to understand that cloning meat is and has been treacherous to us for providing harm to our farm animals by giving them high doses of different chemicals, making them live with birth defects and making statements to deceive the public by saying it s a harmless process that enhances and multiply the breed of animals when it really does not. The scariest part to this issue is our animals suffer and so do we if we re meat consumers. (Dan Kedmey) Then studies have proven that bacteriological meat contamination in the US, for the first time was enacted in 1906 when the Pure Food and Drug Act was signed by laws in regards of banning infected and mislabeled products from the interstate commerce. Observations about those risks were associated with bacteriological meat contamination, and about how it should be regulated, has changed significantly since then. This article focuses particularly on changes that have occurred in bacteriological meat contamination standards in the US since the early 1980s when E. coli was for the first time identified as a new foodborne pathogen associated with the consumption of undercooked meat. The idea of cloning farm animals is to produce replicas of the animals with the highest economic value, for example the fastest growing pigs or the highest yielding dairy cows to make a profit off of. However the process of cloning itself causes our animals suffering. Animals with the highest economic value are prone to developing severe health problems, pushed to their physical limits; they are destined to a lifetime of suffering. The Cloning equals Cruelty campaign highlighted intrinsic animal welfare issues for selective breeding in animals for food, meat and dairy. Research also shows that many cloned farm animals are born with deformed organs and live short and miserable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Medicines Of Medieval Medicine And The Black Death Medieval Medicine Medieval Medicine was basic in an era when terrible illnesses such as the Black Death were killing nearly one third of the population. No one had any idea what caused illnesses and diseases, such as the Black Death. There were no antibiotics or vaccines thus it was almost impossible to cure illness and diseases. Bloodletting was a popular method of restoring a patient s health and humors . Early surgery, often done by barbers, occurred without anaesthesia. Often medicines were made from herbs, spices and resins. The medicine was applied in drinks, pills, washes, baths, rubs, poultices, purges and ointments. Which sometimes themselves contained fatal ingredients. Medicine used to treat some specific illnesses Medieval Medicine to treat the Black Death The Black Death held a mortality rate of between 30 and 40 per cent. Victims had no idea what had caused the disease. And neither did the doctors in Medieval Times. The Black Death was treated by lancing the buboes and applying a warm poultice of butter, onion and garlic. Various other remedies were tried including tobacco, arsenic, lily root and even dried toad. Medieval Medicine to treat Headache and Aching joints Head pains were treated with sweet smelling herbs such as rose, lavender, sage, and bay. • 12. Recollection In Meno In Meno, Plato introduces the theory that knowledge comes by recollection. Through the character of Socrates, he presents this idea, and his argument deserves some clarification and explanation. Plato draws a sharp distinction between knowledge, which is certain, and mere opinion, which is not certain. Opinions derive from the shifting world of sensation; knowledge derives from the world of timeless forms, or essences. The Platonic doctrine of recollection is the idea that we are born possessing all knowledge and our realisation of that knowledge is contingent on our discovery of it. Whether the doctrine should be taken literally or not is a subject of continuous debate. The doctrine implies that nothing is ever learned from scratch rather, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the idea that knowledge requires experiencing something for yourself. For example, Plato thinks that in order to know the way to Larissa it is necessary to have travelled the route yourself. Similarly, he thinks, in order to know a philosophical truth you must have worked through the issue yourself, so that you can grasp how this truth connects with other things that you believe. This notion implies that knowledge is not something that we can absorb, unthinkingly, from people around us; from a certain point of view, it is not incorrect. Furthermore, Socrates sees knowledge to be better than true opinion, because true opinion can escape the mind and thus isn t worth much at least until one ties it down by giving an account of the reason why it matters or why it is true. Therefore, justified true belief is knowledge, because it arises out of recollection. As such, it can be said that Plato believes that knowledge is prized more than correct opinion, and that knowledge differs from correct opinion in being tied down. As well as that, Meno proposes an idea that goodness could be taught if it was knowledge as long as there are teachers to do so. There are none and therefore, virtue cannot be taught and it cannot be knowledge yet it is a good thing. In conclusion, the dispute between Meno and Socrates boils down to the agreement that correct guidance is a result of knowledge and true belief, and is as such both useful and ... Most popular network IM system: AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Yahoo! Messenger (YMSG),and Microsoft Messenger(MSN).are discussed. A. AOL Instant Messenger AIM defines different types of servers. Some of them are login, BOS icon, chat room setup, user search and chat room hosting. AIM uses client server architecture for normal operations but uses a peer to peer approach for voice chat sessions. B. Yahoo! Messenger (YMSG) YMSG takes the symmetric approach. YMSG also uses client server architecture for normal operations as well as voice chat service. YMSG voice traffic is routed by a centralized voice chat server. Clients need only one type of server and then route all kinds of activities though that particular server. While each has been designed and implemented separately, the total group exhibits same characteristics with respect to network and system architecture. C. Microsoft Messenger (MSN) MSN defines three types: dispatch, notification, and switch board. MSN also uses a client server architecture for normal operations and peer to peer for voice chat communication. Most IM systems have mechanisms for maintaining lists of friends. • 14. Low Velocity Impact And Impact After Compression Of Cork... Low Velocity Impact and Impact after Compression in Cork Based Composite material ABSTRACT: Experiments are carried out in the investigation to find out the role of cork as an ideal core material, which is used as a shield plate in the front of land military vehicles to verify the energy absorption and damage tolerance. Composite materials are used in various industries these days due to its high strength to weight ratio putting them into light weight applications. Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion Method is chosen to manufacture the laminate. Specimens are cut according to American Society for Testing and Materials Standards are used. Low velocity impact is carried out on the specimens to observe the energy absorption capabilities of the specimens with two different testing variables i.e., energy level and amount of the viscoelastic material. Afterwards, Compression after Impact test is carried out to study the Damage tolerance of the impacted specimen. The study of all the results from the above tests shows us the energy absorption and damage tolerance with the presence of cork as a core material. Further studies can be done in different energy levels, different viscoelastic materials and also different fibres and resins. INTRODUCTION: Recent years, high modulus and high strength was the main concern of the development of advance performance of the composite materials. High strength is not only the objective but also the performance of the material along with ability ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Impact Of The Colorado Gold Rush In Colorado If you had the opportunity to get rich from gold, would you? Would you be willing to leave everything you have behind to move thousands of miles across the country just for gold? In 1859, the answer for many people was yes. Word of gold found throughout Colorado spread across the country and launched the Pike s Peak Gold Rush or today known as the Colorado Gold Rush. There are several significant events in Colorado history that have had a huge impact on the state we know today. The Colorado Gold Rush, in 1859, was the most significant event in Colorado History for several reasons; the rush attracted thousands of people to our state, initiated the mining of other resources, succored farming and ranching throughout the state and helped to boost the economy of the towns here in Colorado. The gold rush had a massive impact on several aspects of Colorado during the time and these aspects continue to be apart of Colorado still today. Because of the Colorado Gold Rush, people swarmed into the state in hopes of becoming rich. Even though many of these people were go backers , the people that did stay helped with the development of mining towns all throughout the state. A Pike s Peak journalist described the flocking of people claiming thousands from the farther East swarmed into the Missouri valley towns, and enough hardy souls crossed the Plains in the fall of 1858 to give the newly founded towns of Auraria and Denver at the mouth of Cherry creek on the South Platte about 125 ... Within the 1900s, John Hay and Julian Pauncefote come to an agreement that allows the United States to control the construction and administration of the canal without fortifying it (Hay Pauncefote Treaty). Theodore Roosevelt then becomes president establishing great significance towards the idea that the United States should behold total management over the canal. The superiorities in Washington then exposed the idea that Panama could resolve the Colombian conflict if they established and won independence as a whole. A Panamanian group then plans to initiate a revolution with over 500 rebels. United States Naval ships stop Colombian troops from interfering with Panamanian rebels. In one day with the help of the U.S. and its naval ships, Panama is granted independence from Colombia. A new treaty is established that explains and distinguishes the rights for building the canal while also protecting Panama. The canal is then built and finalized after seven years of Roosevelt s passing. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. The Contemporary Code Of Chivalry In Marie De France Marie de France wrote a collection of poems during the high middle ages that reflect the contemporary code of chivalry. Her poetry was classified as courtly love because it mostly involved knights in adulterous relationships with noble ladies. Her collection of twelve poems have themes of love, loyalty, etc. and how they relate to the codes of chivalry that serves as a guide for how a knight should act in order to be honorable. The code of chivalry was created to make warfare among European knights more pleasant. They would give each other time to prepare for fights and treated knights they captured as guests that had to pay a ransom rather than prisoners. Following these rules gave knights more honor, which they held in very high esteem. This code included different values that should characterize a honorable knight. Another way to achieve this honor was by dedicating themselves to a noble lady who they would serve with faithful adoration. This concept was the subject of Marie de France s courtly love poetry. De France uses characters to highlight the values of chivalry in her poems. For example, in the poem Lanval the knight by the same name demonstrates generosity and hospitality as well as loyalty to his lord king Arthur. Arthur however is envious of him and does not grant him the land or wealth he has earned. Here, Marie is painting the hero of the story Lanval, as a chivalrous character while depicting king Arthur as failing to properly serve his subject and thus is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. The Reality Of Reality Tv Essay It is a given that the culture we consume shapes who we are, more specifically what we view on television shapes the content of our minds. It is also generally known that children can be easily influenced by what they see on television. Reality TV is no exception to this rule. It may appear that reality TV is a benign phenomenon but it is in fact a virus that has quickly diseased our society. More specifically, it attracts girls most mercilessly by affecting them negatively as to how they perceive themselves. Indeed, girls who watch reality TV learn that deceit and meanness is normal behaviour in order to achieve success, begin to self objectify more and have a higher expectation of more drama and conflict in their lives as well. The reality of reality TV is that it negatively portrays females. Is there no end to the onslaught on the female gender by television? According to Melissa Henson, director of communications and public education for the Parents Television Council, Because girls are seeing people behaving in a negative way on reality programs, they tend to accept that that s normative behaviour. (Semigram, 1) That may be fine when the behaviour is positive but what of the behaviour viewed on reality TV? Watching a heavy diet of meanness and lying in order for females to get ahead has a horrible impact on girls. Does reality TV really portray meanness and deceit? Yes, it unquestionably does! Sully Combines Eastwood Sully Combines Eastwood, Hanks, and Heroism into a Superb Experience For his dramatization of The Miracle on the Hudson , director Clint Eastwood casts Tom Hanks as the eponymous captain Chesley Sully Sullenberger, and it is a potent combination. The film, simply titled Sully, collects powerful performances around a singular event and explores the immediate aftermath of Sully s decision to land a plane on the Hudson river. Remarkably, Sully isn t a simple disaster movie or ballad of heroism, but instead a considered look at the weight of decision, the ascent of an everyman to high public esteem, and the importance of training and expertise. Before the American Revolution, the nation was a collection of 13 British colonies that were united by the British monarchy. During this time it was ruled by British Parliament which was 3500 miles away and a journey by ship that was 27 days long in the ideal situation but could be up to 6 8 weeks. All of the colonies with the exception of Georgia were formed by people trying to escape some form of persecution. One of the main contributive factors to the American Revolution was the Intolerable Acts (or otherwise known in Great Britian as the Coercive Acts); which included the Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, and the Quartering Act. The Boston Port Act was passed by parliament on March 31, 1774. This Act was designed to punish the inhabitants of Boston, Massachusetts for the incident that would later become known as the Boston Tea Party. The British Parliament demanded that the city s residents pay for the nearly $1 million worth (in today s money) of tea dumped in to Boston Harbor during the Boston Tea Party. This act closed the port of Boston so tightly that the colonists could not even bring hay in from Charlestown to give to their starving horses. Only food and firewood were permitted into the port. In this case, it was to evacuate the people out of harms way. The plan was then laid out for the authorities to execute. What happened, was that the dependance the authorities placed on the plan of execution did not allow themselves to modify the plan of execution when the situation changed. The leaders were bossing the authorities around in such a manner that the right path and desired end result were forgotten. When this occurs, and the execution loses all forward motion because the initial plan is not being followed to the letter, the leaders who were barking orders have to devide their time up between coming up with a new plan and then desiminating it to the proper authorities. She has describes herself as a practical deconstructionist feminist Marxist and as a gadfly . She uses deconstruction to examine how truth is constructed and to deploy the assertions of one intellectual and political position (such as Marxism) to interrupt or bring into crisis another (feminism, for example). Our subjectivity is constructed by the shifting discourses of power which endlessly speak through us, situating us here and there in particular positions and relations. In these terms we are not the authors of ourselves. We do not construct our identities, we have it written for us; the subject cannot be sovereign over the construction of selfhood. Instead the subject is decentered, in that its consciousness is always being constructed from positions outside of itself. It follows then that the individual is not a transparent representation of the self but an effect of discourse. Spivak argues that surprisingly for these figures, when Foucault and Deleuze talks about oppressed groups such as the working classes they fall back into precisely these uncritical notions of sovereign subjects by restoring to them a fully centred consciousness. In addition they also assume that the writing of intellectuals such as themselves can serve as a transparent medium through which the voices of the oppressed can be represented. The intellectual is cast as a reliable mediator for the voices of the oppressed, a mothpiece through which the oppressed can clearly speak. In Homeward Bound: American Families in the Cold War Era, Elaine Tyler May describes these changes from the end of the war through the early 1960s. The author makes a compelling range of arguments about the changes that affected Americans during this period. Mainly, May argues that the domestic containment that arose after World War II promoted the new dynamic of a suburban lifestyle, in part because of the increasing fright of looming communism during the Cold War Era. May coins the term domestic containment as the center of her argument in her book Homeward Bound. Domestic containment refers to the happy American suburban lifestyle home that was reinforced by popular culture because of the scare of communism. All of May s other arguments in the book hinge on her larger focus on domestic containment being Americans overriding ideology during the early Cold War. May states, The self contained home held out the promise of security in insecure world. It also offered a vision of abundance and fulfillment. • 42. Irony in Hamlet Essay Many literary critics point to the considerable irony that exists in Shakespeare s Hamlet. This paper examines the play for instances of irony and surveys their interpretation by critics. Howard Felperin comments on Hamlet s ironic consciousness of the fact that he is unable to quickly execute the command of the ghost: Eliot s unhappy judgments are worth considering here, if only because they are based on an intuition of Shakespeare s creative process that is so near to and yet so far from the one presupposed in the present essay. He imagines Shakespeare grappling with his archaic sources in the attempt to naturalize, rationalize, and psychologize generally speaking, to streamline and neoclassisize them and ... Recently the spectral likeness of dead King Hamlet has appeared to the sentinels. Tonight the ghost appears again to Barnardo, Marcellus and Horatio, a very close friend of Hamlet. Horatio and Marcellus exit the ramparts of Elsinore intending to enlist the aid of Hamlet, who is home from school, dejected by the o erhasty marriage of his mother to his uncle less than two months after the funeral of Hamlet s father (Gordon 128). There is a post coronation social gathering of the court, where Claudius pays tribute to the memory of his deceased brother, the former king, and then, along with Queen Gertrude, conducts some items of business, for example dispatching Cornelius and Voltemand to Norway to settle the Fortinbras affair, addressing Polonius and Laertes on the subject of the latter s return to school abroad. Right at the outset of the drama, there is irony exhibited in the manner in which Shakespeare characterizes King Claudius he is simply stupendous and yet, shortly hereafter, he is revealed as a truly evil, thoroughly diabolical sort. • 48. Reflection Of Leadership And Leadership In The Honors College Throughout this semester, I learned so much and gained so much confidence in my ability to lead. I had never led through the Honors College before this semester nor had I ever felt so involved and included within the Honors College. Being an Honors Year One mentor has allowed me to grow in ways that I would have never grown if it was not for this experience. Through my experience, I have made friends, realized what all the Honors College has to offer and connect freshmen with others. I learned how I lead best, how to not always be the leader, what my strengths are and how to use them to their full potential, and what needs to happen differently next semester in hopes to improve the experience for the freshmen. I thought our mentor class was absolutely phenomenal. Tiffany continuously led us well and reigned us in well when we needed to get down to business. Her leadership, council, and example made a difference for me when leading my freshmen. She was also very encouraging, which was much needed. At the beginning, I was intimidated by Rebecca being in our class each week. However, the intimidation faded, and I quickly learned to appreciate her. She had many great suggestions as well as a great insight. I may be an extrovert, but on the first day of our mentor class, I was very intimidated and nervous. I had no earthly idea what to expect. However, as it is now the end of the semester, I am honestly sad the class had to come to an end. I learned so much from the other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Creating Opportunities For Students Proficiency ... I understand the need to create opportunities for my students to show their proficiency in directing their own learning and have done so within my classroom environment. I am aware that as the Learning Manager this requires me to have a clear understanding of each student s strengths, needs, and interests. This is needed in order to create a diverse and relevant classroom experience that revolves around the curriculum. Please see my examples of such opportunities below: EXAMPLE 1 During diagnostic testing of a particular year 8 class the reading and spelling levels of certain students were well below average. These results were amplified when it was obvious that the attendance within the class was sporadic and behaviour unruly. These combined, led to a poor attitude towards classroom participation and assessment tasks. The action displayed below was created after my EPL 3 placement when it became evident that the classroom needed consistent routine and positive reinforcement in order to encourage student participation. The required action manifested in the form of motivating student interest, learning and differentiation in the classroom. The Year 8 students needed a form of routine within the class and a point of interest which would be renewed systematically throughout the term. Thus, the rules and expectations chart was created in tandem with the students, in order for the students to take ownership of their behavior and attitudes within the classroom. In ...
